Subject: Passing the Torch

Dear NanciNetters,

When I first put the NanciNet out there four years ago I thought it would
be fun, but I had no idea what it would lead to. This has been the most
rewarding thing I've ever done -- suffice it to say that my life would be
much different now if I hadn't undertaken this little project. It's been
an incredible experience, thanks to all of you.

Now I feel it's time for someone else to have all the fun of running the
show here. Bill Page has graciously volunteered to be the new NanciNet manager, administrator, and sponsor. I have accepted his offer with much gratitude. Bill has been around here since nearly the beginning; you may also know him from the Kate Campbell list he runs. I'm
sure Bill will do a great job with the NN. We're currently in transition
mode; I expect the official passing of the torch will occur within the
next couple of weeks. The NN will continue to work pretty much the same as
it always has -- same posting address, same Majordomo, etc. -- but please
bear with us while we get things rearranged.

I'm hesitant to name a bunch of folks who deserve thanks for their special
contributions to this forum since I know I'll forget somebody important,
but I must mention a few people: Shelly Brisbin; Rob, Patti, Kirsty, and
Meggie Schrull; Shawn Kimbro; Lisa Day; John Alvord; Mike Cogliandro; Deb
Thornton; Bill and Sue Peete; Mike Chesman; Kenn Lippert; Marty Welch; and
everyone who has ever taken time to send in a good posting (if I didn't
name you personally, feel free to flame me!). And I can't forget our
original NNers: Mary Wood Littleton, David Grant, and Victor Hwang (we
were the NN before the NN began). Also thanks to the Austin contingent
for making me feel at home here; and of course Nanci Griffith, James
Hooker, and the rest of the BMO for inspiring all of this.

In case you're wondering what's next for me, I plan to spend more time
concentrating on real life -- Austin is a nice place for that. But I'll
be staying in touch with all my e-friends and lurking around the NN for
the foreseeable future. I'm not sure for how much longer I'll keep my
world.std.com address, but you'll be able to reach me at my new one: ferg@
jump.net. And check out my website which has links to the updated FAQ file and other good Nanci sites.

Well, thank yew kindly folks. Please make welcome our new list manager
and remember the responsibility he has. It's not a trivial job, believe
me. Read the FAQ, follow the posting guidelines, and continue to help
maintain this forum as the best of its kind. Long live NanciNet!

Your friendly ex-list manager,

Mark Ferguson

P.S. If any of y'all are ever in Austin, shoot me an e-mail!

Last week sometime, one late late cool autumn eve while I was travelling up in
NYState I turned on the TV and on QVC, what appeared before my eyes, but
Nanci Griffith. Seems I just caught the tail end of some performance and then
the usual QVC people came on and did their shpeel. They were pushing
Nanci's book. What I want to know is: Did I imagine this or can other Nanci-
netters confirm this sighting?

No, Terry, you weren't dreaming. QVC was taking part in a special fashion
shoe sale and show where the proceeds go for breast cancer research. Many
celebreties, espcially breast cancer surviviors, were there to support the
cause, including Nanci. Her musical interlude at the event was not carried
on QVC (just the last chords of something I should have recognized but
didn't...guess I'll have to listen to all my Nanci CDs again to pick out
which song it was :)), but a nice (though too short) interview with her
was, as well as an opportunity to purchase OVOR through QVC.

Actually, there WAS a short viewing of her on stage earlier in that song
(3 flights up - the song that Frank Christian screwed up in Concord last
month) - poor audio and it lasted about 30 seconds or less.

And, Nope, I didn't watch it - I taped it - so I wouldn't have to sit
through the shoes.

Hallooo folks,

A while back I posted a request. I know not whether Uncle Mark posted it or
not as I was kind of out of town. At any rate, I got no response. Nanci
told us about meeting someone a while back as they were walking their
dogs. If this story rings a bell with anyone, especially if this person be
from a certain place... please get in touch with me, as I have a message
for you!! I tried going about it in a more discreet way, but I guess you
didn't have your ears on...

At any rate, a great big hello to all of you from Patti, Rob, Kirsten and
Meggles!!

Speaking about first encounters with Nanci: I got my first banjo
strings from Pete Seeger when I was 15, and played guitar and 5-string
banjo for around 40 years; but I missed her completely until my son
played me OVOR almost 4 years ago, and I became a fan. Soon thereafer
Nanci was to appear in NY for the Flyer tour--so we went to hear her.
She introduced Frank Christian, appearing as a guest artist, as "the
best acoustic guitarist in NY," with which I agreed. I've been
privileged to be taking lessons from Frank ever since. Lurking about on
nancinet I've been pleased to hear such nice things said about Frank,
when he was playing with Nanci on the Newport Folk Festival tour; we
heard their outstanding performance at Jones Beach--nobody else came
close to Nanci in that tour
which included Joan Baez, an old favorite of mine.

Most of you don't know that Frank gives private lessons in NY. You can
find him in the phone book in Manhattan if your'e interested.

Subject: Stood still

Hello all,

OK, here's something I've been wondering for a while: in "Love's Found A
Shoulder" from TLTB Nanci sings in the chorus that " . . . love never
could stand me still." In "Always Will" from Flyer we hear in the chorus
"Hey, you always stood me still / Hey, you always will." There's also the
first two lines of the third verse--"Love has been my passer by / I stood
too still to catch your eye." Is there any special significance to how
this image is used (apparently differently) in these songs? Is there a
particular connection between the songs? Has NG commented on either one?
Do I need more of a life, given that I'm thinking about this on Saturday
night? (At least this one's footnote-free . . . )

I'm sure we all echo the sentiment expressed by Michael Ross. To me, the
best thing about this list is that Mark is never too proscriptive when
it comes to discussion topics, letting us know only too gently if we get
to the 'uh-huh?' stage.

On a more personal note, I would like to take this chance to publicly
thank Mark for introducing me to Iris DeMent. Thank you, thank you,
thank you Mark for without Iris my musical journey would be so much
poorer. I managed to meet Iris backstage when she was here in Sydney for
two concerts back in April. She's a wonderfully obliging person and
although I find her quite shy on stage, she's very personable when you
meet her up-close. Her husband, Elmer, is a top-shelf bloke too. He
volunteed, without being asked, to snap pictures of Iris with those of
us who went backstage to meet her. When Elmer asked how I first got into
Iris's music, I eagerly said it was through the Nancinet and its
listmaster. Unfortunately, he said he wasn't too au fait with mailing
lists although he did know of a lot of punters who got to know Iris
through the music of Nanci :)

Good on ya Sonya! You also mentioned about the radio programmes 'Country
Club' and 'The Planet' - I'm afraid they are only small drops in an
ocean of Top 40 paralytic pap. Sonya, or any other Aussie Nancinetters
out there, I'm not sure whether you have heard of a programme called
'Live on Stage' or not, but that show has featured people like Iris,
Emmylou, Christy Moore, The Chieftains, Paul Kelly, Archie Roach etc.
Check it out if you have not already - it's on Sunday 4pm on Radio
National and repeated the next day at 11am.

I can't wait for the reviews from all you across the great pond on Nanci's
upcoming shows. Is there any word on if she will be playing full length
concerts or joining a troupe like she did here in the states. Maybe it would
be good for her to stay to a limited schedule on stage if all is not right.
But man am I itching to hear what a full set list would read like, and who's
the backing players? OK I want awnsers so who's got the goods? Gary

On the Iain Matthews page is or was a list of people, who announced as
friends and my tickets says: Nanci Griffith and special guest inventing
America.

URL: http://www.bio.vu.nl/home/vwielink/matthews/matthews.htm and choose
there "news and tourdates" and the list is:

There will be approximately 20 guest performers, including:Emmylou
Harris,Odetta,Dolores Keane, Clive Gregson,Tom Russel, Eric Taylor,Dave Van
Ronk,Carolyn Hester,and more.

But there were rumours that Emmylou was cancelled, but there is more then
enough left over.

Actually, as far as I know from reading the Emmylou mailing list (EOL) and so
on, she isn't going to be singing with Nanci Griffith in Europe at all.

As for there being "more than enough left over," I don't know how you can
*possibly* say that : )

Which reminds me that I have been having another serious listen to *Other
Voices, Too*. Just today, two tracks struck me as being particularly wonderful:
"Darcy Farrow" and "I still miss someone." I think the latter is just beautiful
(duet with Rodney Crowell, isn't it?) and (while those who know me well know
that such statements usually have to be tortured out of me) I prefer it just a
bit to Emmylou Harris' recorded version ...
