NanciNet Digest 10-22-98
// Another UK radio appearance, a book signing (and possible other
// fun things) in Michigan, and Maura O'Connell.
//
// This will likely be the last digest edited by yours truly. Look
// for future editions from the new NanciNet manger, Bill Page (BP?)
// -- he informs me that he'll continue the edited format. By the
// way, the NN is four years old tomorrow. Happy NanciNetting,
// everybody!
//
// It's been fun to bring you NNs and the messages thereof
// To keep you all informed about the artist that you love
// To steer you clear of music that might make your ears go deaf
// and point you to the good things. Your humble serf, - MF

Subject: Nanci At Borders (time change)
I just called the Borders store in Ann Arbor. The woman I spoke with
confirmed Nanci's appearance, and said that it will be a signing only. She
told me it would be from 12:00-1:30, not 1:00 as stated in the Metro Times.
Borders opens at 10am.

Subject: the book and another recommendation
Dear all,
Finally got my copy of the book and I think it pretty much fulfils
it's purpose which is (for me) to make me want to hear the tracks
all over again...which is exactly what I did. My son has bent the
cover already (well he is only 1 and trying to get over a really bad
cold, so i forgive him) but it still looks very nice indeed.
But two things, firstly Bela Fleck is a man! I knew I should have listened
more closely...secondly did I miss something or has Steve Earle put on
a little weight. Don't get me wrong- i'm built for comfort pretty much
the same-but what happened to the guitar town man? I'm living in the
past I know.
Lastly, just picked up an album which I know would have past many of
you by. It's by Pullman and it's called - darn it I've forgotten what it's
called - something like Turnstiles and Junkpiles - anyway it's their only
abum - very mellow guitar instrumentals (and some mandolin and banjo)
hardly what i'd call alt.country but had a definite folkie feel to it. I
heavily recommend it.
OK, gotta go and dish out the medicine...
Thanks for listenin'

Subject: Lyle's "Other Voices", Emmy, Allison,Kimmie
Wow. Lyle Lovett has really done it. His 2-CD compilation of Texas
songwriters on "Step Inside This House" is great. Covers include Guy
Clark, Steve Fromholz, Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Eric Taylor, Walter
Hyatt, Townes Van Zandt (4 from Townes,"Lungs","Flyin' Shoes", "Highway
Kind", "If I Needed You") and others. Alison Krauss provides harmony on
many. Really sweet. Get relaxed and just enjoy. Nanci has really
started a movement of other voices!
btw, Emmylou's "Spyboy" is getting my spin constantly. Looking forward
to receiving Dar's "Cry, Cry, Cry" and the Allison Moorer's "Alabama
Song". Any reviews out there for these two?
For you Houston Kimmie Rhodes fans (I'm a fanatic), she'll be back at
the Duck on November 19th. Should be great, right Eddie?

This is how rumors get started :-), but a friend told me today that
Maura and Nanci will be doing a benefit in Ann Arbor together sometime
soon...that's all I know. Check with The Ark.
I also want to second Mike's recommendation. I was fortunate enough to
hear Maura do some absolutely incredible harmonies on this, ah,
well...gee, ah, CD that's being recorded (that actually is finished and
was mastered today) and she is TREmendous...what a voice. And as nice a
person as she is talented.
Traveling for a few days, so everyone have a great weekend, set your
clocks back, and I hope everyone is Texas is safe...Mike Cogliandro?

Subject: Odetta at the Ark
Odetta is entering her 50th year of performing, according to an article
in the Ann Arbor News Thursday. She'll be playing the Ark on Saturday night.
I've heard it's very possible she may have a special guest at this show.
