NanciNet Digest 10-24-98

// So this is it! My first digest! This one is a little long,
// because y'all were talkative and I don't know what I'm doing,
// yet! Anyway, in this digest we hand over the reins of the
// NanciNet, get more infomation about Nanci's book signing in
// Ann Arbor on Sunday, and look at the idea of other folks
// covering Nanci's songs, with one very scary suggestion.

Morning, NNetters: OK, any of you lucky to see NG play on Saturday
(assuming she does) make sure we get the details...

BTW, all this rain we've had in Texas reminds me of a tourist asking a
San Antonion if we get a lot of rain around here: "Well," replied the
Texan, "we get 30 inches of rain a year, and if you're lucky, you'll be
here the day we get it."

Good weekend to all...

I've confrimed through a reliable source that Nanci Griffith and Maura
O'Connell, along with Mary Chapin Carpenter, WILL be doing a benefit
concert for the Ark sometime in the near future. Don't know when or where. MCC
is playing in town soon with Catie Curtis so I'm sure they won't want to
announce anything until after that show. I believe the Ark board will be meeting
soon and would imagine details will be forthcoming. I have no idea if this
will be before or after Nanci goes overseas. I do not think it has anything to
do with the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, the annual Ark fundraiser to be held
1/30/99.

Here's another example of a squandered opportunity by Nanci's book
publisher: I am the managing editor of a major inflight magazine and have requested a review copy of her book in writing TWICE and by phone TWICE--first
request back in June. I had planned to do a short write up (probably with a
photo of her and/or the book) about it in a column we run each month that
spotlights people, places and things that we find worthy, including books and CDs. I cannot understand whey they didn't send a book (we sure receive a ton
each day unsolicited) or at least responded to my query.

Hey, NanciNuts,

As Mark noted in the last digest, we are completing the shift from his
regime to mine. For the time being the FAQ will remain in Mark's website
(mainly 'cause I don't have one!), but I'm handling bounces,
subscriptions, the digest, etc.

For now, I plan to continue to moderate the digest, to keep the noise
level to a minimum for the 1000 or so of you who are on that list. The
regular list will continue to be unmoderated, within the spam filters
that are set in the system.

As some of you know, I'm a bit of a maillist junkie. I am subscribed to
over a dozen lists (most of them digests, thank heavens), but the
NanciNet was my first list, and remains one of my favorites. We have
long said that the NanciNet was the home of the nicest people on the
'Net, and that hasn't changed.

So let's keep it going for another few years, and then someone else can
take over.

Talk among yourselves. I'll suggest a topic: Other than Nanci, who would
you most like to hear cover Nanci's songs?

Looks like you're doing a real good thing, Bill. Thank yew!

As for the new voices, I'd like to hear Hal Ketchum and Todd Snider sing
a
few of Nanci's songs.

As Bill mentioned, the NN FAQ file will remain at my website. However,
my website has a new home these days.so if you have links or bookmarks
you probably ought to update them. The new location of the FAQ file is:

Thank yew, folks! And happy birthday to NanciNet -- four years old

I talked to Borders again today. This time I was told that Nanci's book
signing Sunday will be from 1-2:30 in the afternoon, as has been advertised in
the local papers. Sorry for any confusion that may have arisen from my
previous posts.

Hm. I think it would be really neat to hear Greg Brown do a Nanci
Griffith
song, and also, to hear Nanci do a Greg song.

I love this. A great question for an obsessive with so many personality
disorders I have to use my toes to count on my fingers.

How about a duet of the two greatest living singers--Aretha Franklin and
Ray Charles on "Gulf Coast Highway"?

Pop Staples and the Staple Singers singing "Time of Inconvience."

"Anyone Can Be Somebody's Fool"--Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

Ry Cooder and David Lindley--"This Heart"

"LAte Night Grande Hotel"--Irma Thomas

"Looking for the Time"--Lou Ann Barton

"Drive In Movies and Dashboard Lights" OR "Banks of the
Pontrachatrain"==Marcia Ball.

"Spin on a Red Brick Floor"--Fats Domino OR Buckwheat Zydeco

"Waltzing with the Angels" Dwight Yoakem

"Still got the Radio"--Carlene Carter

"Going Back to Georgia"--duet--Rickie Lee Jones, Leon Redbone

In fact, when is this album comiong out.

Hi,

This afternoon I was in the CD-shop and another customer asked about
Ella
Jackson and the store keeper didn't know her and couldn't find anything
in
the computer, so he asked me if I hears of her but she is unknown to me
too.
So I said I look at home at the net...nothing.

Anybody heard of Ella Jackson?

Should be country or folk.

met vriendelijke groeten,

Hans Janssen.

I want to hear some tapes of Nancinetters performing Nanci's songs. I
think
it would make a fun tape tree (might be embarassing to a few folks
also!)
If anyone's brave enough to send me a cassette with one or more songs...
I'll see how many show up and maybe we can assemble a "best of
Nancinetters"
tape for the holiday season. Contact me by e-mail if your interested!

Subject: NN: ABSOULTELY NO NANCI CONTENT: The song "Nobody's Child"
   Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998
   From: o41@erols.com

I have a recording of the Travellin' Wilburys performing "Nobody's
Child" for the Romanian Angel Appeal." I'm not familar with the song
from other sources--I know that Hank Snow recorded a song of that name
and I would guess that's the same; ELO (whom I know nothing about except
I never did like them) also recorded a song of that name which should be
the same song as Jeff Lynn is in both groups. Can anybody tell me
anything about this song? It's not by Jimmie Rodgers but sounds as if
it could be.

I know somebody out there will have the answer to this.

I got the guitar/vocal music to Flyer from Chappell music, not sure
which branch though.

I was in Hammicks looking for the OVToo book and it doesn't seem to be
available over here yet. It certainly isn't available via their
ordering system. When they searched for Nanci Griffith it did bring
up the Flyer music book and the ISBN for this is 0-89724-462-1. Any
of the big book stores Waterstones, WHSmiths, Dillons, Foyles etc
should be able to get you a copy from this number.

For Tab/Chords on the Web Search Yahoo for "Nanci Griffith Guitar
Chords".

Bright eyed and bushy tailed,

   From: HOTASJAP@aol.com

hi, been awhile since i wrote, but i was lookin in the folk music
section at
circuit city last weekend, and ran across a double cd, and just had to
buy it,
cuz it had one cut from nanci, and knowing how knowledgeable most of you
are,
you probably already know about it, but thought i would mention it.
there are
many good people on it, its supposedly the best of contemporary singers-
songwriters. its from back in 1994, called "shelter". has 28 songs, 14
each
cd. a few names i recognized are shawn colvin, mary chapin carpenter,
dar
williams, john gorka, sarah mclachlan, or course, nanci, kristen hall.
its
very, very, good. some kind-of folksy, a little countryish on some, and
anyway, i loved it. i just thought i would pass this info on, maybe you
all
already know, but if not, and if you can find it, get it. it was nearly
$20,
but with all this good music, i think its worth it. the song that nanci
does
on here is called spin on a red brick floor, and its good. all i have to
add
for now, hope all are doin well. hey, if you have this cd, tell me what
you
think of it. later...

Subject: NN: Dream covers of Nanci songs
   Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998
   From: BMiller224@aol.com

Our new list manager Bill asked what singers we would like to see cover
Nanci's songs.

Emmylou Harris has recorded a couple already, "It's a Hard Life" and
"Gulf
Coast Highway," the latter with Willie Nelson. In both cases, I prefer
Emmy's
cover to Nanci's version. I think Emmy's voice and style are wonderful
matches for Nanci's songs. She and Nanci are friends, and it seems to
me that
she has been a great influence on Nanci, both in song styles and in
encouraging Nanci's appreciation for popular musical traditions.

Lucinda Williams sings lead on "Wings of a Dove" on "Other Voices, Too"
with
Nanci and Lee Satterfield singing harmony. The song suggests there is a
strong compatibility between their styles. I'd love to hear Lucinda
belting
out a song like "Ford Econoline" or "Listen to the Radio."

Kate Campbell would be a good candidate for a killer version of
"Drive-In
Movies and Dashboard Lights."

Arlo Guthrie, who sang beautifully with Nanci on "Tecumseh Valley,"
seems to
be a good candidate for a cover of "Love Wore a Halo (Back Before the
War)."

Since Buck Owens was doing Harlan Howard songs since about the time
Nanci was
born, "Never Mind" would be a great selection for him.

One of my favorite CDs from 1997 was "Lee Ann Womack," which I believe
was
this country singer's debut album. I personally prefer her to Leann
Rimes,
who even Nanci praises as having such a wonderful voice. I would really
enjoy
hearing Lee Ann Womack do some of the tunes from Nanci's "country"
period,
like "Sing One for Sister" and "Lone Star State of Mind."

I don't know whether Pat Boone is still in his heavy mtal phase. But if
he
really wants to get radical and do something Catholic, "St. Teresa of
Avila"
might be a good choice. Otherwise, an easy-listening-heavy-metal Boone
version of "Love at the Five and Dime" would be a kick.

If Nanci continues to pursue an interest in classical music, I look
forward to
hearing Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony perform one
of
her future symphonic pieces. Hopefully on a program with selections
from Bach
and Aaron Copeland.

And if Elvis ever comes out of hiding, a duet by Nanci and the King on
"Wooden
Heart" would be just great. I vote for an extended version, including
the
full German lyrics of "Muss i denn," which is the Swabian folk tune used
in
the song.

Bruce "I still think Nanci is country" Miller

Uhhh.. count me out. For me to perform one of Nanci's songs would
be sacrilege. I had a beautiful alto voice when I was much younger,
and was much sought after by church choirs and the like. Shortly
after I turned thirteen, my singing career ended abruptly. Now people
actually tell me to shut up during the national anthem. They once
accused me of throwing the piano off key. The nicest thing anyone
has ever said about my current voice is that, "Even though Ed's voice
range is limited to slightly less than one-half octave, he certainly
has a hard time controlling it."
