The legality issue has been raised. I am not a lawyer and am not
representing myself as such, as giving legal advice without
credentials is in itself a crime.
But.....isn't it different when money doesn't change hands?
(OK, and when Mike Chesman and his billions are only to be found in the
old Dutch East Indies, the laugh will be on me.)
Two.....if Nanci gave her permission, it'd make no difference in
the world legally. Even Nanci doesn't own her songs--they're owned by
publishing companies. Now, she may own the publishing companies but
still, wouldn't it be the company's permission required?

I'll let someone else who has been with the list longer than me answer
this
(or perhaps our new list manager might care to offer guidance). I know
the
cut and dry legal answer here but I also know this list has had an
annual
tape exchange from folk's music collections and have shared some rare
live
performances, etc with each other. All of these have been accepted on
Nancinet... Seems like singing the songs ourselves is a lot more in
keeping
with a folk tradition of sharing the music. What do you think Bill???

Umm, this makes feel like a real old timer, but am I the only one that
remembers the Uneccesary Plastic Object? It was a cassette tape that
was
passed from person to person, each one adding their own
"interpretations"
(and believe me, some could only be called interpretations) of Nanci
songs.
DOn't get me wrong, I enjoyed each and every one of them, but they
weren't
all what you would call "traditional". Someone even took the time to
make
and copy a nice cassette liner with titles and everything. Maybe they
would like to start on Volume II "More Plastic for the Landfill".
I don't beleive there are any legal ramifications if it is not sold for
profit but just passed among friends. Besides, do you really think
Nanci
would sue the "nicest folks on the net"?
I'm going to bed, just got home from a star party where I stood beside a

You don't need anyone's permission to sing their song. If you record it
you must pay royalties but they can't stop you from singing or recording
anything.

Didn't we already make a tape of Nanci netters "interpretation" of her
songs
awhile back?? I believe it was " Uneccessary Plastic Objects".... Anyone
else
remember this or am I crazy?
Although it would be cool to do an Uneccessary TOO....get some fresh

I know I am way in the minority here (*nothin wrong with that, though)
but I
would love REM and Nance to either work together or have them cover each
other's songs. Now this gets complicated...because the song I would love
to
hear Nanci sing is "Arms of Love" which is actually a Robyn Hitchcock
song
that REM covered, but I think Nanci could do it justice fairly well. I
would
love to hear REM do Time of Inconvience (bonus points question:who
produced
Time on Flyer for Nanci??) To those of you who doubt the fab
four...oops, fab
three, could do it, I point in the direction of their song Don't go Back
to
Rockville, which is as country as country does.
If the woman can work with HOOTIE she can damn well work with one of the
best
bands of the decade. Amen.

Reid,
Thanks for the tape offer.... I must tell you there are a few
others
who have made claim to be the "worst singer" so you could be in for some
stiff competition for that title. I'm hoping that we get so many
entries
that we'll have to pick, say the 20 best to put on a tape. That way, if
somebody really does embarrass themselves (I'm thinking me here), it
might
get bumped from the final tape (then again there could always be the
"deluxe" boxed set with all takes and alternate versions) ;-)
Reid, I'm going to post this response to the list because it will help
get
things rolling...
1. I'm not concerned with studio quality recordings but just some
heartfelt
singing and playing.
2. Only one selection per "artist" can make the final tape, however
submit
as many songs as you like so there is some room for variety on the final
tape.
3. I will not be able to return your tape so make sure it is a copy you
can
part with.
4. I would prefer that all tapes be in the cassette format (please no
dat
or cds... but I can accept non dolby, dolby b or dolby c tapes just be
sure
to indicate this on your tape).
5. In fact, make sure you PUT YOUR NAME on the tape.... Imagine the
shock
if Ken Lippert ended up on the finished tape with Kelly Sanderson's
voice.
Hey, I might not know that someone wasn't trying a high falsetto vocal!
Consider this the Nancinet basement tapes! Everyone's a contender...
My address is Mike Chesman, 605 Rambling Rd., KIngsport, TN 37663
A good deadline would be to send your tape before Thanksgiving that
would
give me the time to assemble a tape tree for getting them out in
December.
Thanks to all who are expressing interest!!!

Yup...the same thing happened to me. And when I called the publisher for
a
THIRD time, I got the word that the original publicity person on the

left, but the new one promised to get me a copy...it must be the

Greetings all!
In response to Reid who wrote in about a song called "Nobody's Child", I
have a self-titled album by Maria McKee (she was in a band called Lone
Justice in the late 1980's) which has a song with the above title.
According to the liner notes, she wrote the music, and co-wrote the
lyrics with Robbie Robertson. The album is one of my all-time
favorites; I haven't liked any other albums of hers which I've heard,
but this particular one might be something that other NNetters might be
interested in. She alternates between ballads (such as Nobody's Child)
and some pretty rockin' tunes. It was put out in 1989, so I'm not sure
of it's current availability. All I know is when my tape bites the
dust, I'll be pretty darn bummed out!

Subject: NN: Ann Arbor Book Signing
Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998
From: GGrif1978@aol.com
Hello all! It was an unseasonably warm late October day in the
Ann Arbor area today, probably because we wanted to make Nanci
welcome and maybe think she was back in her native Texas. There
was quite a line already at Border's when I got there at about
12:30 or a little later. I browsed the store for awhile then got
in line a few minutes after Nanci sat down to start signing her book
. . . and just about anything else (I saw quite a few CD covers winding
their way to the front of the line). The folks at Border's were nice
enough to hand out album size color flats from OVToo for everyone in
line and a few posters as well. Nanci was signing away with a ready
smile for everyone, posing for a few pictures with fans and chatting
a little. When I got to the head of the line at about 2 p.m. I was
initially a little tongue tied (an unusual experience for a lawyer),
but then it was like seeing an old friend again. Nanci was gracious
enough to sign for me one of the OVToo album flats, the Lone Star State
of Mind album (as in vinyl) cover and CD booklets for OVToo and There's
a Light Beyond These Woods. We chatted very briefly about the San Diego
show at Humphrey's this past summer, and she said this was her first
book
signing and she seemed to be enjoying the attention. Nanci also told me
that her first novel will be published by Random House around next fall.
Hmmm, another book signing then perhaps? Then maybe I can bring along
a few more of the CD covers from my collection (currently 13 CDs strong
until, dare we hope?, the next release) :)
Oh yes, one more thing. When I met her I gave her my card and said
if she ever needs a lawyer with a last name she can trust, call me.

Wow, just got home from a quick, unexpected trip to Ann Arbor. And you
guessed it, this Northern Michigan girl's dream was accomplished: I got
to see Nanci, hear Nanci and get books signed!!
It started with a nice vacation with some car trouble which I won't
trouble you with but we decided to spend a couple of nights in Ann Arbor
before heading home. We found out about the Odetta concert at the Ark
and then decided to go to Borders to find out if they had Nanci's book
and saw these tiny posters advertising a book signing on Sunday.
Well, that was quickly put on our agenda. Then I thought to myself:
bet she shows up at the Ark. So we decided to eat out at an Indian
restaurant across the street from the Ark and as my poor husband was
trying to order his curry in walked Nanci!! I almost died. She was
trying to sort of slide on through and I just let her have her peace.
I don't know if anyone else recognized her but it made my night.
So she did sing with Odetta even though she didn't remember all the
words for Amazing Grace she redeemed herself with I've Got a Hammer!
I have never seen her live and I will tell you if she does do a benefit
for the Ark I will be there somehow!
For the book signing she made everything she signed special and was so
sweet and gracious and let people take pictures of her with her fans!
I, of course was nearly speechless, but told her we love her new CD and
listen to it as we travel.
I am sure you will hear from the others who attended. It was a lovely
crowd both places. And that Odetta is a powerful performer no matter
how old she must be! She is an inspiration in so many ways.

From: ingaqotr@CTC.Net (Amy C. McKibbin)
Hi all,
If you don't want to read another boring account about somebody finally
getting to meet Nanci after trying for seven years, hit the delete key.
It's Wednesday night, rather warm for this time of year in NC, and I'm
checking my e-mail. Up pops a message from Steve (Halesbop@aol.com)
which
mentions a book signing in Ann Arbor, MI. "Neat," I say out loud.
"What's
neat?" my husband asks. "Oh, Nanci's doing a book signing in Michigan
this
weekend," I mumble. "Well," he says, "why don't we go?" "Quit being
sarcastic," I snapped.
Saturday morning our bags were packed and we were in the car heading to
Michigan. I purchased a ticket to the Odetta concert at The Ark the
night
before and said, "Carpe diem!" Some things are worth the trying.
After driving 11 hours, I got to The Ark and found one of the few
remaining
empty seats, met Steve in person (really nice guy, y'all), and sat down
to
enjoy a marvelous show by Odetta. I'd never seen or heard her before,
so
you can imagine the pleasant surprise. We sang along to traditional
folk
songs and laughed at her graceful wit and stage presence.
Nanci came out at the very end and sang "Amazing Grace," "This Land Is
Your
Land," and "If I Had a Hammer" with Odetta. They walked out slowly with
their arms around each other and left the audience singing "Amazing
Grace"...what a profound exit.
After the show, we found the dressing room exit and joined the group of
about 15 people waiting to meet Odetta. She came out shortly after to
sign
programs and CD covers but Nanci, seeing the crowd, was shy and did not.
Nineyear (also a really nice guy) stood by and watched. Long story
short:
we managed to get Nanci out there. She came out while I was about to
ask
Odetta to sign my program. When she saw my hand shaking with the pen
and
saw the tears that had suddenly (and embarrassingly) sprang to my eyes,
Odetta put her arm around me and walked me over to Nanci and said,
"There's
somebody I want you to meet." What a marvelous lady. I must admit I
got
Gibbering Idiot Syndrome (GIS) at this point and, wiping a tear away and
sniffing, blurted out, "I just drove 11 hours hoping to get a chance to
meet
you this weekend, and I'm really glad to meet you!" She just put out
her
hand and said, "Nice to meet you," and then saw my NN button and
exclaimed,
"Oh, you're a Nanci-Netter!" and grinned. Several of us stood around
chatting with her for about 5 minutes...she's excited about taking
Odetta
with her to Ireland (you guys are in for a treat over there) and about
the
release of her next book. She seemed to feel quite well considering her
health. I got to give her a big hug before leaving. I think I floated
back
to my car.
Finally, my childhood dream has come true. :) :) :)

Hi Susan... I'm a little puzzled. Weren't the Girl Scouts sued by ASCAP
a
few years ago for singing songs around the campfile? And don't venues
like
bars and coffee houses have to pay an annual license to allow the
singing
of ASCAP (and BMI, etc) songs? So there has to be rights beyond just the
recording rights...
