Hi everyone,
I just came back from seeing someone I have been a big fan of for a long
time but had never seen live, Mary Black. What a great show. I saw her in
Santa Rosa, Ca and she is going to be in Berkeley tomorrow night and I
think I will go see her there also. She is now on a U.S. tour and if you
get a chance to see her go! If you are interested in getting a album of
hers to check her out I recommend No Frontiers to start. It is a very good
album. She did five songs off it tonight. She also had an incredible band
with her and she allowed them to really stretch out a few times. Anyway
what an amazing show and singer. She would be my vote of someone I would
like to see cover a Nanci song. She did do Going Gone on one album but I
don't know if that is considered a Nanci song as she did not write it. Well
time to quit babbling and go to bed. Take care all,
Jim Notman

This is not meant to be a downer. Mom passed away yesterday morning in her
sleep at home amongst her family as she had wished. It was a little over two
years ago that mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. She did remarkably well
for a woman who was only given 3 months to live. Her wishes at this time
are for everyone to go down the the riverboat and have a great time!
I'd like to thank all my friends for their comfort and prayers these past

peeps,
i was just re-watching my tape of 'the transatlantic sessions' i posted
on last week. (the one with maura and nanci singing 'trouble in the
fields'....?) and i hadn't noticed before, that the camera cuts straight
from the end of an eddi reader song to a scottish loch to the room in
the hotel where it's all being filmed. you see some of the musicians
gathered with their instruments and as the owner of the hotel begins to
talk to the camera, what you see is nanci sitting ,guitar in lap,
telling a story with everyone in the room watching her. the camera cuts
to the owner's face and the poor guy tries to talk about how much he
loves opening his hotel to do this and all that can be heard, over him,
is nanci's voice telling a story , roars of laughter and then really
loud chords from the beginning of 'who knows where the time goes'.
the reson i posted on this??? it just seems very relevant for some
reason. let me think more on why......no, actually, don't.

Hi Everyone,
What about this for an idea guys. Instead of worrying about the copyright on
Nanci's songs why don't we make a tape of original songs by Nancinetters and
present it to Nanci. Perhaps some of the incredible talent we have lurking
around here might find one of their songs on the next Nanci album. I have
heard one or two things by a couple of people on the list and they were
fabulous. What we should do is have all the aspiring songwriters write a song
that they think would suit Nanci, record it and we will put it on the tape. I
would be happy to correlate this, I have a 24 track digital recording studio
in my basement here just outside Washington dc (3 adats/mackie 24.8/lots of
processing/good mikes and good vibes) and would be more than willing to make
it available to anyone to record their stuff free of charge (within reason,
don't take advantage etc. etc.). I also can accept DAT tapes and regular
cassettes and maybe we could get it pressed up into a cd. Whaddya think???
Gordon (riding the wall of death again)
ps. I already have my song mixed, mastered and ready to go!!!!!

Hello Nancinetters,
After two years or so of daily lurking, this is my first submission. I am
a singer/performer and have probably introduced Nanci's music to more people
in southern Ontario than anyone. I've played her music for the past 10
years in clubs and concerts and if I don't introduce the song as a Nanci
Griffith tune, someone always comes up and asks me if I wrote that tune...
Her music really touches people , (as you all know).
So this little "basement tapes" project of Mike's sounds like fun and I will
definitely be compiling a tape of some of my live and studio versions of
Nanci songs. Hopefully one (or more???) will make the final cut.
I am also about to go into the hospital very soon for open heart surgery and
plan to take a discman with about 10 of my favourite (and most healing)
CD's. Among them for sure will be:
Last of the true b..
Other voices 1
New Emmylou- Spyboy
Dr. John - Back to New Orleans
New Lyle Lovett (I call it "Other Voices III")
Shawn Colvin - Steady On
Flim & The BB's - This is a recording
and several others...
Mike, the tape's in the mail.

I like that idea. Chuck Pyle, whom I studied songwriting with at a guitar
camp several years ago, heard a song of mine once that he liked, and
offered to take to Nanci, if he knew he were going to run into her soon. I
was too shy to accept his offer.... I have a few in that vein; definitely
a strong NG influence in those days of writing. :-)
Also Mike's idea.... Looks like two projects going here. Great!

"get" Nanci...all of my heathen friends ( :) ) have no appreciation for
such an original, heartfelt voice...so i'm looking forward to taking

pain of attempting to contribute to the "Plastic Too" tape...as mine is
a truly awful voice :)...i'm a Nanci fan of a few years now, with a
particular liking for her earlier work...favorites being Daddy Said,
SOARBF, One of These Days, You Can't Go Home Again and Working in
Corners (amongst others)..
as i'm writing from London, i was wondering if there's a NNet gathering
planned for the Mon 30th concert (which i'm greatly looking forward
to...it being my first Nanci gig)...also, are any Londoners planning a
mini road trip up the Stoke-on-Trent gig?...being the sad muppet i am i
have no car, but i would be happy to share driving duties in exchange
for a ride to and from the gig...
by the way, my vote for singers to cover Nanci songs would have to be
Lucinda Williams or Karen Carpenter (if she were still of this earthly
dimension)..

Your e-mail brings up a point that I've been wrestling with. At this point
I don't know how to answer you. With everyone's concern about copyright I
think it would be best to stick with the artist's own compositions. I know
that eliminates a lot of everyone's favorite Nanci performances but we're
making an assumption that Nanci would approve of our tape idea and if we
include other song writers we would have to extend that assumption further.
I'm not sure that that would be wise to do.
I'm going to post your letter and my response to the list and see how others
feel. But for the time being I'd say send a tape of anything you want but
be sure to include at least one song that Nanci wrote.

Okay, the only problem with this idea is, I don't write songs. I don't play an
instrument (besides the clarinet, anyone want the jazz version of Southbound
Train, didn't think so) and I really want to contribute. So what are the less
musical of us supposed to do? All a capella songs????! Not fair. I mean, I
guess I can "read" a poem into a tape, but that's no fun. I don't think we
should make a tape that doesn't let everyone who may or may not be a closet
singer etc contribute. Just my two cents.

Hey, what are you guys talking about?
I think we can completely forget about the copyright issue. Anyone can
make a tape of themselves strumming another person's song on a Saturday
afternoon and send copies to all their friends and family, just for the fun
of it. And anyone can sing someone else's song anytime they please, just
for the fun of it. We all do this stuff all the time. What you can't do
without paying royalties is sell that tape to someone else, or accept money
for performing someone else's song. This "Unnecessary Objects Too" project
is a private, just-for-fun-among-friends sort of thing, without a single
penny changing hands. Right? So copyright laws don't apply.
However, it may be that you guys will still want to ask Nanci whether she
minds that her fans are going completely whack-o on her! She must be
fairly accustomed to this sort of thing already. Might even be flattering.
My guess is she long since realized that she hasn't got much control over
the crazy things her fans will do (like driving 22 hours to see her sign a
few books, or making basement tapes of her songs!). She signed up for this
life some years ago when she decided to be a musician, and now her music
has taken on a life of it own! It must warm her heart to think that people
get such joy out of her songs all over the world.
So tell the neighbors to pipe down, and fire up your tape decks!

Hey y'all! Man, all this talk about an Unnecessary Plastic Object
brings back memories of yore. The original UPO tape was put together
by Beth Thibodeau (not sure if she's still on the list), who compiled
NNers' tapes of themselves performing one or more tunes. It featured
lovely renditions of Nanci-penned classics such as "Gulf Coast Highway"
and "Ford Econoline" as well as Nanci-covers like "Across the Great
Divide" (I think we had three of those) and even "Things We Said Today"
(a Beatles tune Nanci performed in concert). Oh, and some wacko put
a punk-rock version of "It's a Hard Life" on there! The tape had a
dazzling liner card, courtesy of Mike Cogliandro.
We didn't seek any approval from anyone for this project; Nanci was
aware of the tape and at least one was sent to James Hooker. No money
changed hands. It was simply a fun thing for a group of friends to do.
Over on the Dar Williams list (ah, more memories), they recently put
together a similar tribute collection, and even had CDs made up. For
that one, a donation to Dar's environmental foundation was requested
in exchange for a copy of the CD. I would suggest to Mike or Gordon
that they get in touch with the Dar-list crew (http://www.darwilliams.com)
for tips about how best to handle this kind of thing.

nanci songs everywhere. literally. i'm constantly being told to shut up
and stop singing (because my voice is ,let's say, not. very.good. tho, i
was told that i should sing professionally at the weekend.
explanation:he'd had one too many.) people usually ask me what i'm
singing because it's unusual compared to what they're used to, so i tell
them. i'm well known around here for my 'weird' taste in music and
'jenny's strange songs'
i would really, really love to participate with this collection of the
songs that mean the most to all of us, but i only just picked up my
guitar at the weekend, for the first time in four years or so, i sound
not unlike a frozen dead frog. i play the violin and would love so much
to get my hands on the string arrangement for Gulf coast highway. i urge
the rest of you to get on with it though, the more people who hear nanci
and find something they can relate to in her music, even if through
another voice, the better.
luv jenny 'tonight in the shower i will be singing 'who knows where the
time goes' by sandy denny, brought to my attention through the music of
ms. nanci griffith' jones
p.s
i also have a question, where can i get the
guitar chords to "more than a whisper" (my favouritest ever
makes-me-cry-every-time-i-hear-it song ) ??? anyone know? i got really
good chords for "you can't go home again" and i can't find the page they
came from. i remember seeing a table with song titles in it and
absolutely hundreds of nanci songs listed. the nice person that owned
the page also put a note at the bottom on Dsus7. jogging any memories?
wasting space and time on the list of the ever-s0-lovely 'still

The easiest way to play this song is... with a capo! It's in the key of C,
but if you capo up to the 5th fret, then you can play it in G and the
chords work really nicely.
Without going to the length of typing all the lyrics out, here are the
chords. Each line represents one line of the verse (or chorus):
verse:
G
G/C (a combination of two chords: hold the bottom and top string of the G
chord down, and add the B
string and D string fretted notes of the C chord)
F , C
G
G
G/C
F , C
G
chorus:
C
F
C , D
G
C
F
C , D
G
Hope this helps anyone who attempts it!
all good things,
