All this talk of other performers w/nanci got me wondering. Was anyone on
this list at the show at Symphony Space in NYC that featured NG along with
Mary Chapin-Carpenter (right before she hit it big) and Matraca Berg. Even
though the seats were partially obstructed the show was quite magical.

I was at that show - what an incredible evening. I'd love to have a tape
of that if it's out there in boot land. Magic. Nanci told lots of stories
about Late Night Grande Hotel (which was new at the time) - there was one
about a guitar lick which was accental and perfect - do you remember the
details?
I also attended a show soon after that without Nanci but pretty amazing -
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Joe Ely & Rodney Crowell. That
was at Radio City Music Hall.

"Just Another Morning Here" from LNGH (perhaps I don't have the title

Someone may have already mentioned this, and maybe she's already covered it,

Hi Folks,
I'm not exactly sure how I got myself into this, but I promised Mr. Roy
Rede that I would post clips of his Nanci Remix Project if he was brave
enough to send them to me. Mr. Rede was true to his word and provided
two CDs containing clips of his remixes. The clips include 15-30 second
samples of - Gomi, the Japanese DJ's dance mix of "Late Night Grand
Hotel," a bassoon and piano mix of the same song, a baroque rendition of
"Gulf Coast Highway," and a dance version of "St. Teresa." This project
is the sole responsibility of Mr. Rede, who once told us that Nanci had
blessed this effort. Please direct any comments to him:

I've gotta admit, when I first bought Storms and heard "I Don't Wanna Talk
About Love Now", THAT sounded like MUZAK to me compared to what I was
accustomed to hearing from Nanci. Of course I grew to love the record. "Just
Another Morning" is really quite similar in that regard; sorry but I don't
think a MUZAK interpretation of it is all that inappropriate. This is not
meant to disparage the song. I really like LNGH and thought it was a very good
tour, too. Let's face it, some great songs have been adapted to MUZAK. It's a
compliment to Nanci, really.
While I'm at it, I think it would be neat if Vonda Shepard (not sure I've got

No flames here. I really didn't like the disco version of St. Teresa, but
who knows, if these come out, maybe Nanci will reach an audience who would
never otherwise hear her. I don't know if anyone else remembers this one
since it may have only been played locally, but back in the 60's a Memphis
band, The Counts, recorded a rock n roll remix of "Stormy Weather". My

I'll jump into the frying pan with you, Mike. I liked the samples too. I am
not a big fan of disco, but when I envision being in a nightclub full of folks
dancing up a storm to Nanci Griffith (and I can envision this to the Gomi
sample), it brings a very big smile to my face. This joyful sounding clip puts
an entirely new slant on LNGH, placing the accent on the hopeful instead of
the melancholy. I'd like to be able to get up and dance around my living room
to this one.
The bassoon/piano LNGH sample sounded interesting. The bassoon is a rather
mournful sounding instrument, and I believe this remix might be closer to
Nanci's own vision of LNGH, with the bassoon providing an appropriately
melancholy accompaniment to Nanci's voice, and the simple and sparse
bassoon/piano arrangement emphasizing the sense of aloneness the lyric evokes.
I'm sorry, folks, but the GCH sample sounded as if this remix might just turn
out to be downright beautiful. I can just imagine that choir of voices rising
behind her as Nanci sings "and when they die, they say they'll catch some
blackbird's wing." Gives me chills (the good kind) just to think about it.
As far as the St. T. sample goes, frankly, I was amazed that anyone would have
the creativity to even conceive of putting such a rhythm/riff behind the
melody. I am not a big fan of alternative or techno-pop music, but I could
honestly imagine hearing this version of St.T.on MTV (if I watched MTV (g>).
To me, Nanci's voice floating ethereally over the riff in the remix has a
haunting sound to it, and so, for me, the remix "works," even in the context
of the song.
I am basing what I have said on a few seconds of samples, and reserve the
right to change my mind or make a final decision when I have heard the final,
finished product. I am looking forward to hearing such a product, and hope I
get the chance.

Another dream cover of a Nanci song is James Taylor singing "Working in
Corners."
Reciprocally, I'd love to hear Nanci singing James' "Only a Dream in Rio" and
his song about the Magi, "Home by Another Way."
It can be tricky singing a song by a member of the opposite sex. Suzy Bogguss
says she occasionally sings "androgynous" songs written by male singers.
I like to sing, and sing songs in private by both male and female singers,
being careful to change where appropriate the lyrics of songs like Nanci's
"Nobody's Angel," Matraca Berg's "Back When We Were Beautiful," the Dixie
Chicks' "There's Your Trouble," and Suzy's "Just Like the Weather" (not that
all these have to be changed much).
I don't have that problem when I sing songs by James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett,
Tracy Byrd, Collin Raye, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, or Roger
Miller.
For this reason I've been hesitant to join in the "unnecessary plastic
objects" project.

I remember when "Blue Roses" came out I commented on Nancinet that I thought
GCH would have been very cool if they had carried through with a string
quartet arrangement ala "McCartney's Yesterday". The little GCH remix
snippet seems to have captured that idea. The choir voices I'll have to
wait and hear more of. I used to think Phil Spector ruined "The Long and
Winding Road" with overproduction after hearing the George Martin version
sans orchestra and choir. But today I like both versions. I think I might
feel the same way about these Nanci remixes.

My thanks to Shawn Kimbro for posting the remix clips on his web page
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/2893/remix.html). So far, response
has been 3 to 1 on the positive side. To all of you sending me hate mail,
remember that these mixes are designed to turn on a new generation of Nanci
fans, not to appease the old guard. Someone observed that these mixes did have
isolated master vocals and must have come from the original recordings. True.
The remix project is in cooperation with Nanci, we did not "overdub disco
beats" on her beloved music. You must also bear in mind that you are only
hearing a few seconds out of mixes that go on for 5-8 minutes. These tracks
were created with a beginning, middle and end in mind. The St. Theresa mix is
a beautiful tapestry of percussive sounds and emotions. The GCH Baroque mix
was arranged and recorded with a 36 piece string orchestra and a 54 voice
choir joyfully singing out Nanci's lyrics in Latin (The full version is truly
magnificent!). I ask that y'all listen down to the full versions when they are
released. Trust me, we'll get Nanci some major radio play whether you like it
or not! :-)
