Subject: NN: That remix controversy
   From: Bill Page (bpage@scctel.com>

Hey folks, I gotta tell you...I really like the Gulf Coast Highway setting.
Don't know who's doing the male solo, but it is very nice. I don't care much for
the rest of the samples, but the GCH mix is just great.

As much as we may always want to hear Nanci's music "pure," (shoot, we don't
even like it when she does her OWN remixes!), fact is different folks like
different kind of music. 'Swhy Baskin-Robbins makes so many flavors...

The marvelous male voice on "Gulf Coast Highway Baroque" is Arnold McCuller.
Arnold is probably best known as James Taylors back-up guy. He's a powerhouse
of a singer and the coolest and sweetest man you'll ever have the honor of
meeting. We were blessed that he could do the record with us in between his
gigs with James on the road.

Perhaps a fandangled sky Ed? A great album cover to my favorite Emmylou
album. I have it on vinyl and couldn't resist giving it a spin after
your post then getting the ol' Sigma out to play the title track. Gosh,
that song brings back some memories. Thanks.

   From: "Robert Pugsley" (RMP6@leicester.ac.uk>

Dear All,

I don't know who RoyRede is (or what his motives are for remixing
NG) but I do know that he's a fan of NG's just the same as the rest of
us, and so I'd just like to add my voice to Marks (while disagreeing
about hating the remixes!) and say that these (as good natured as
they might be) threats are a little over the top...I'm sure no-one's
seriously suggesting anything untoward should happen to him, he seems
to me like a genuine, warm hearted fellow, but the tone of a couple
of posts seems to be slipping towards open insults...

We're supposed to be the nicest people on the Web (we ARE the nicest
people on the Web!), let's show it...

best wishes to you all (but especially to RoyRede),

Just to clarify, because I believe my comment was taken a little too
literally- my post to pull Mr. Rede from his bed in the night was meant to
be sarcastic. I am sorry that my attempt to be cute failed.

I will be more exact here- I don't think Mr. Rede needs to answer to any one
of us what his intentions were or explain his background. He put the music
out there and let it speak for itself. (Not to say there is nothing then
wrong with expressing your opinion of whether you like it or not- taste is
not at issue). In my mind it boils down to Entitlement- Are we entitled to
like every project Nanci puts the stamp of approval on? Are we entitled to
have Nanci sing (or pronounce her words) a certain way? How about to attend
what we consider to be a stellar performance as opposed to a lukewarm one.

Artists change and evolve. Nanci is certainly not the same person she was
when she made PIW - nor is she probably the same person she was when she
made OVOR. We don't have the right to expect her not to evolve and do
something new just as we don't have the right to judge Mr. Rede's art. (And
I do think it is an art... for example, I dislike rap music, but I can't
discount its importance in our time!!)

I've got to stop these early morning ramblings...

Subject: NN: Comments too bizarre
   From: Poetmuse@aol.com

hilo.

Okay... you know what I detest the most about the remix's? The way they've
brought out the "stupid" in all of us. Can we agree to disagree? If I see one
more post telling me to "wake-up", "have an open mind" "do we have to like
everything Nanci blesses" I will get violently ill.

I don't see how not liking the remixes means we need an open mind. It's just
not our cup of tea. Amen. Some people are accusing others of flaming and going
overboard. If you didn't get the joke- don't laugh. Mr. Rede put himself out
there, did he not? Which is not to say I condone threats, bad jokes etc in his
name. Since we are getting so lofty about artists and their creative
"artistry" we should also comment that things people create and put forth into
the world are, well..to say the least...fair game. You take the slings and
arrows. You also take the praise and well wishes (which have also been
published on this list).

I also don't appreciate the comments that those of us who don't like the
remixes are suffering from over adulation of Nanci and her work. Nanci means a
lot to me. That has been chronicled in these very pages- she has saved my
heart- my life- more than a few times- so yes- her works, particularly those
remixed, mean mountains to me. But that does not cloud my judgement so much so
that I have turned into a misty eyed gimp who can't appreciate something
different from the original. If these remixes spoke to me in any way, I would be
howling their praises. But they don't. AND I am content to let the mystery be-
and get on with life as we know it. I just don't understand how disagreements
turn into "flames" and not difference of opinion- putting everyone who even
begins to disagree (or agree for that matter) on the defensive. I also don't
understand how loving Nanci is being turned into something derogatory- something
to not "overdo".
I don't think anyone on this list is a demented pyscho...plastering Nanci
posters on their wall and singing "It's a Hard Life" 24/7. I think those of us
who speak passionately about things get a bad rap because emotion is not an
acceptable thing in most cases. But we're humans and emotions somehow- always-
turn up.
I guess it just makes me angry a bit to think of someone even insinuating that
my ability to make a open-minded, "awake" decision, is clouded by my
appreciation and fondness for a woman who's craft has touched my life. I can
still think for myself. Thank you. Just like you can still think for yourself.
You love the remixes? Great! You tolerated them? Great! You're reserving
judgement? Fabulous! You hated them with a passion? Great. But let's not
reduce this list into an arena of one group versus the other. It degrades us
and Nanci's body of work.

(( For those of you who'd like to hear the entire clips as Roy sent them,

As a closet wirehead, Shawn, I am mightily impressed with your Internet
technoid skills in loading the clips on your first try and your generosity in
doing so. My RA player had expired and just having to reload IT was more than
I could think about last night. Thanks again for your efforts...

Trying my best to be high-minded, I decided to give it one more go, since the
RA clips were longer, even though I did have to reload the RA player...

Roy--release the cat, at least! Having been one of the more vociferous post-
preview critics of the whole remix project (although duly admiring your march
to your own drummer), I must say that the RA clip of GCH baroque is exquisite
and the casting of Arnold McCuller quite brilliant. What a voice!! Like
Aaron Neville without the Neville, if y'all know what I mean. This piece is
quite worthy, in my opinion, probably because it is more true to the NG I
treasure. It also seems (of the four) to be the technically superior clip in
that it doesn't sound like random tracks thrown into a blender. That's just
part of the problem with the others--the Nanci part just doesn't GO with the
other parts.

Unfortunately, the third time wasn't the charm for the others...I can't
imagine what RR was thinking in selecting St. Teresa for this treatment--it's
still awful, and I just can't even go to the thought of people dancing to it.
See Jimmy Buffet's "Morris' Nightmare" for a reiteration of "No, no, -- no
disco!" The other baroque number might not be awful if it was better
technically, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's my
computer speakers.

I guess my next question would be, "Is this all there is?" Are there more?
If there are more, are they awful like St. Teresa and Gomi, or exquisite like
GCH? As it stands, it's 3-1 in favor of Roy ordering more tequila...

   From: Andrew Layden (andrew.layden@strath.ac.uk>

Just got some things here that I forgot to say.

First of all, I'm not anti-disco or anti-remix. I'm just not sure why Roy
Rede would want to single out Nanci's music for his purposes. I wouldn't
buy a Nanci-remix album, but if people out there really want one, then Roy
is providing a service for that market. That's OK with me.

I'm somewhat dubious about some of Mr Rede's claims.

He claims that Nanci gave her blessing for the St. Teresa remix. I just can't
believe this, as this is really a very personal song. More personal than
Nanci's normal mode of songwriting.

I can't remember the exact context, but a while back, somebody mentioned a
story about when Nanci was recording the "Flyer" album. She found it
very hard to record some of the tracks. Apparently she was in tears at times.

Would this same person "bless" a dance-remix of a song of this nature?

Mr Rede also claims that "we'll get Nanci some major radio play".
Roy will not tell us about his previous projects, so we do not know whether
this task is within his capabilities. What makes him so sure that he can
achieve this, when Nanci and her record companies have failed to do this
over the years? This is despite Nanci's diverse range of music styles on
her albums. Or is it just "dance"-music that sells records these days?

Well Andrew, I didn't believe it either. I immediately got on the
phone to Gold Mountain Entertainment (previously Vector, I think),
Nanci's management company and they confirmed the story. They even
added, and I quote, "Nanci loves it". Don't believe me? Call them
yourself. You can reach Nashville info at 615-555-1212 and get the
     number there.

On a comletely unrelated note, I recently picked up LLs "Step Inside
This House". Of course it is excellent as everyone has said. But
something I haven't seen mentioned is how wonderful the pictures are
in the CD booklet - each a compact study and story in itself.
Venturing myself now into my middle years, with the resulting change
in conception of what beauty really is ( more appreciation of the
spiritual as opposed to the physical), I can emphatically say that
these are some damn beautiful men. Just look at that picture of Lyle
and Eric Taylor. Volumes are spoken there. It caused me to rush out
and get both of Eric's CDs (also great).

Okay, Andrew, that's enough.
We've moved from questioning the wisdom of a Nanci remix, and expressing our
opinions about it, to attacking the personal integrity of a fellow NanciNetter.
That ain't gonna keep happening.

Folks, this is a list that is designed to discuss Nanci's music and related

Hi everyone! This is the first time I have emerged from the murky depths of
lurkdom, but this question really got me thinking...

Few people know the things I would do to hear Tori Amos do Once in a Very Blue
Moon.

As far as Alanis goes, that should not be contemplated any time of day...
Nanci working with REM would produce beautiful results, I think. What an
excellent idea. Also U2 might be novel. Jann Arden could cover Nanci & do
her justice. Bob Geldof also has a very interesting storytelling style. They
could
probably have a lot of fun with each other.

How about Jackson Browne? Two of the most beautiful, smoothest voices I know
together...
Just a thought...

Subject: NN: Remix fever
   From: Michael Wilt (mwilt@smp.org>

Griffsters,

Well, I finally got to listen to the snippets of the Nanci remixes
today, and, needless to say, I survived. I must say that once I heard
them I was surprised by the high levels of emotion, on both sides, seen
on the NanciNet in the last few days. I don't have strong memories of
the 1970s disco years; never saw Saturday Night Fever, after all, cuz I
was too busy listening to Arlo Guthrie and Steve Goodman and Linda
Ronstadt and the McGarrigles and going to movies like Bound for Glory
(contrary to some people's perceptions, there was so much going on that
it was possible to get through the 70s without encountering disco). So I
know nothing of the lineage of these remixes.

When it comes to art and performance and all that, though, I'm not
likely to ask, as some have, "Why would you do this to that music?" The
only real answer to that question is "Why not?" Should Duke Ellington
have never touched Tchaikovsky? Should Shakespeare have never been done
in modern dress? Should George Gershwin have never written opera? I have
a hard time understanding why genres and eras should be expected to
avoid one another and somehow stay "pure."

Anyway, the GCH mix is real nice--it's hardly a radical departure, in a
way, since the song really lends itself to that kind of treatment. The
Gomi mix of LNGH is also interesting, and after a few listens it started
to grow on me. Where the original begins to swell ("It's not the way you
hold me. . ."), the remix starts to throb and, for me, the emotional
effect was quite similar. I could see dancing to it, and I don't think
the song's integrity is violated. Saint Teresa doesn't quite work for
me, though, but not because it's a song about suicide and all that;
hell, there are lots of ways to respond to suicide--grief, rage, denial,
confusion, whatever. I think it'd be more effective if the vocal track
was cut and spliced more radically, more repetitiously, making the
reaction to the suicide more laden with confusion and anger.

I don't know that I'd run out and buy the album of these remixes, but I
certainly have to respect what Roy Rede and Co. have tried to do, as
well as the fact that they went through the proper legal channels to get
permission to use the work; plus, you gotta admire Roy for making this
stuff available first to the NanciNet, knowing that even the nicest
people on the Net can sometimes have a bad day.

On my way back to lurkerland,

I have my tape machine all set up to record a contribution
to the "Plastic Objects Too" project. Playing Nanci's stuff
through one time to reacquaint myself with some of the
trickier parts, I realized that this stuff (at least, the
stuff I want to play) is all from a woman's point of view
lyrically and sounds stilted with my deep croaking singing
voice. What a surprise, right? I need help.
So I ask my wife, who has a wonderful voice, but she gets
shy in front of a mike, and refuses. My Mom's voice is a
deeper croak than mine. I absolutely refuse to alter Nanci's
words in any way. I guess I'll have to stick to Nanci's
covers of male artists.
Oh yea, the remix. (I LIED!)
It's a hoax. This guy we never heard of comes out of
