Dear Nanci Netters,
My name is Amber Gilbert. I am thirteen years old, but please don't
think that I'm too childish for anything. It is very important that I
write to Nanci Griffith. If any of you happen to know how I might
accomplish this, please let me know. My address is alorien@juno.com
Thank you,
p.s. if you would like to know why, it is because I have a friend that
has just lost her boyfriend in a way that is similar to Nanci's John. I
thought that she could help ease the pain.

Subject: NN: Blue Moon encounter
From: Glen Hatchell (ghgator@ibm.net>
This past weekend was the 4th Wings and Strings Music Festival
held in Polk City, FL (about half-way between Tampa and Orlando).
There was great music all weekend but my highlight came from an
unexpected source.
I hosted one of the stages on Friday afternoon and as I'm standing
off the the side stage, I see this person standing in the side stage
area and the badge says Pat McInerney. As any Nanci fan-atic
would do, I said out loud "Pat McInerney" to which he smiled and
said "Hi, have we met?"
Without going into the details, I saw Pat throughout the weekend
and I got to ask some of those questions I always wanted to ask
It was obvious that Pat loves Nanci as much as we do....if not more
(but how could that be). Pat, btw, was playing drums for the Wings
and Strings host band, Chesapeak.

Subject: NN: Booking Nanci
From: ptpower@juno.com (patrick t power)
I have contacted those who book Nanci via email (Twice!) hoping to find
out the possibility of booking Nanci for the 25th anniversary of our
coffehouse concert series -- to no avail!!
Nanci played our coffeehouse just prior to "making it big" and it has
been suggested that she might headline an evening of performances.
Does anyone have a clue as to how to get a response from Nanci's booking
or management people? We are planning our event for February or March of
2000.
Please respond privately.
Thanks.

Dear Roman (and all),
There's some information about the plane crash at Los Gatos at
http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/parton/2/deportee.html
There have been some superb versions of this song, but no matter
how it's sung or performed it never fails to move me, which I put
down to the lyrics which are some of Woody Guthries best IMHO.

Well, now it depends on the venue....and who exactly would be there.. now say
there was.. I don't know.. a Nanci net convention or something going on :)
I would definitely make every effort to go- as long as I had ample time to
plan and live on crackers for 3 weeks or so.... But I've already paid up to 30
odd dollars to see our Miss Nanci and the 50 dollar stretch isn't that bad-
since I enjoyed both experiences. It just really depends on the where and the
when and how much I can lie to myself in believing that I can afford to go,
and can't afford to miss. ;)

Well, considering the fact that I'm flying to Dublin in less than two
weeks...
I hope all you guys and gals are right in your speculation that Ms. Nanci
will not give up touring forever, but since I've only seen her live once
(which isn't nearly enough), I couldn't take the chance.
I'm new to the list, and have been enjoying the banter immensely. Although I
currently hold only one concert stub, I've been listening to Nanci since
'92.

geez - I ponied up I guess it was $60 for 5th row seats for my daughter and I to
see NG at a certain political fundraiser (whose cause celebre - so to speak -
I'll leave unmentioned) last spring, and at intermission i found out that if you
were to make an additional $95/person contribution, you could MEET Nanci (AND
Graham Nash AND Jackson Browne AND Gloria Steinem AND Rodney Crowell) at a
reception afterwards.
Well, I really didn't have the money even for the tickets in the first place,
but GAWSH, thought I, we'd really get to MEET her!?!?!
I conned the organizers into letting us both in for the $95 check, which they
were happy to do, I mean we were there for my daughter's 9th birthday
fercryinoutloud (or fersinginoutloud, I guess I should say) - what could they
say?!?! Still, I don't think my checking account has quite recovered,
especially after I slammed it for a costly day at Newport Folk in August - oh
well, debt, it's the American way, right?.
But yes, we met her that wonderful Spring night, and she was absolutely
wonderful, so gracious and beautiful, it was absolutely worth, a memory worth a
millions dollars I don't have, but I already gushed about that to y'all last
April, so I'll spare you the re-gush...
But Christina's right, I'm only a year-and-a-half on this list, and have only
met a couple of NN'ers in the flesh-like at that show in April. I'd love to get
the chance to celebrate with this wacky bunch (maybe even get to meet our
beloved Roy) en mass - how DO we get a huge jamboree NN-fest bbq and
fete-phenomonal going?? Y'all've done it before, ay? Maybe if we all
converged upon, I dunno, say some small town in the Appalachians -
here I'm just randomly spinning my finger over a map of the Appalachian states,
got my eyes closed, round and round no peeking now and a-HEEEEEEE-eeeeeeer we
go, THERE! let's see, what does that say there 'neath my finger, "Franklin,
Tennessee" I think it says, can't be too sure, the type is real small - okay,
say we just stampeded upon this little Tennessee hamlet in the hills, called
"Franklin," i THINK it says down there, can't be TOO sure, damned type is so
small, well, anyways, we could get together, cookout, pick, grin and sing, have
a couple of brew-ha-ha's, and who knows, by sheer force of multitudinous
merriment (like the singing Who's of Whoville) maybe we might draw out some, oh
I dunno, some, er, well maybe a well-known musician or someone to come out and
be our guest for a few (or at least the Grinch might bring our roastbeast
back...)
Could happen!

wasn't. (does that sentence contain a double negative? hmm) But I had to share
(and for those less inclined, I am neither bragging nor complaining-hrumpf)
this with the group...
I am on another mailing list- a writing list actually: small stories, poetry
etc. Just a little web area for submitting your daily bread and/or insights
into the human psyche. Bear with me, this does have Nanci content. And for
some reason, the song "Wouldn't it be Fine" has been in my head for the last
week! I just really got into the lyrics lately and have been toying with the
idea of doing something about that (maybe cuz they reflect a bit of what I
have been feeling)...so the other night I sat down and penned my own little
"Wouldn't it be Fine"- posted it along with the original lyrics (and all
apologies to Nanci!) and put it out there...
now I would say my little thing isn't exactly a re-writing, and it isn't
exactly an answer back... it's sort of both. Which makes no sense- but I have
to tell you- I've gotten quite the reply to it! All of them asking who Nanci
was and where they could hear what the song sounds like! Pretty amazing, you
ask me. So there we go... turning people on to Nanci without even using the
actual medium of music to do so.
Maybe I should tell them to ride around in as many elevators as possible and
see if they can catch the Muzak version... D'OH

Hey Christina!
I was thinking your phrase "a heart attack waiting to happen" was a line from
a song (by Nanci)?
Then I thought maybe it was from Brooks and Dunn's "Mexican Minutes" (one of
the few songs from their great "Hard Workin' Man" album that didn't become a
hit single--still a wonderful song). But I checked, and the similar phase in
that song is "every minute has a heart attack in it." (Since we're interested
in recognizing songwriters: Kent M. Robbins and Jim Messina wrote "Mexican
Minutes.")
Can you enlighten me whether or not you were quoting from a song?
Thanks!

As a relatively new digest subscriber, can I ask an extremely dumb question of
"What exactly is 'this'?".
Also, I just wanted to mention a non NNetter who needs a prayer...
A good friend from work got me absolutely hooked on Nanci, and she now has
left this job and is moving to Chicago. Here's to hoping that she does well
and is always happy. I owe her for Nanci, though. I'm still working on
building my collection (CD's are expensive, and I'm a student...), but I have
heard most of her CD's at least once since my friend owned most of them.
My father just had heart surgery. My best wishes to Steve. He has a long
road to recovery ahead of him, and it is not easy. My advice is to get your
exercise after the surgery. Start slowly, but definitely do it. My dad has
made excellent improvements, I think mostly because he has been walking as
much as possible (which, granted was VERY little in the beginning). Good
luck, we'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

Dear "KremCy@aol.com" (and everyone),
As many of you will know "this" is the end-of-year poll whereby someone compiles
a list of everyone elses top ten albums of the year. Most people post them
straight to the list but some post privately (the shy retiring types - we know
you're out there!). Then, with a couple of weeks to go before Christmas,
everyone has a chance to add albums to present lists, buy stuff for other
people, etc.
I suggested that I was willing to do it again this year (we had some rules, but
I can't remember what they were, perhaps soemone can look 'em up in the
archives?) and that we should have a closing date (around the beginning of
December).
Strangely though, I haven't seen any mail about this at all!
Is no-one else interested? That would be a pity, because I, for one find this
type of thing useful. Please let me now what you think.
best wishes

Heck, my Mom finds them useful as I can ask her for the ones I'm missing

Ah, c'mon Robert, it's only our *favorite* thing to do! We'll be
posting them, don't worry about that. But it's just a bit early yet I
think.
C. ONeill asks:

Up to you, but I think it should be discs released in 1998. December of
last year might be okay since we usually post lists around the first two
weeks of the month. If you have a discovery from a previous year, why
not include it in your message, but not among your top ten, or five or
whaterver.
My prediction: Lucinda beats Nanci on her own list. Could it really
happen? We'll see...
Warming things up,

A few albums in the general area of country/folk, which I love and listen to
all the time (I THINK all from the past year) are:
X Suzy Bogguss, "Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt"
X Beth Nielsen Chapman, "Sand and Water"
X Dixie Chicks, "Wide Open Spaces"
X Nanci Griffith, "Other Voices Too"
X Faith Hill, "Faith"
X Collin Raye, "The Walls Came Down"
(I expect a little controversy from my choices, as more than one of the women
singers involved are sometimes considered to be too glamorous to be good
musicians! Personally I can't see that should be a handicap!)

An appearance on Saturday Night Live led to any extended musical

between tours with Taylor, Arnold established himself as a session

Dear all,
Imagine the scene, you are a world renowned country/f**k singer,
enjoying a quiet evening in with a bottle of Ireland's finest and your
packet of smokes, listening to a crackly old vinyl album recording
of Woody Guthrie and strumming along happily to yourself, when
over a nearby hill [editor" check this. They do have hills in TN, right?]
you hear a couple of hundred people, chanting in
unison "and by golly it was a Woolworth store..." and suddenly there's
a knock on the door and those same couple of hundred people are standing
on your porch [editor: check this - she does have a porch, right?] smiling
insanely at you and saying "We've done this tape for you - how
about we build a fire and gather 'round it - and maybe you could lead the
singing?"
The world renowned country/f**k singer looks at the upturned happy faces,
notices that some are wearing t-shirts with a strange guitar motif, while others
are dangling small plastic objects at her, a few have compiled questionnaires
which they are even now starting to read through, some have just plain broken
down and our sobbing quietly into their well-thumbed copy of "Flyer for Guitar
and Piano, a couple are digging up your lawn [editor-check this she does have a
lawn right?], and one and two are playing you their new songs which 'just might'
be suitable for your next album...
The world renowned country/f**k singer, fearing for her personal safety edges
back into house smiling sweetly while reaching for her mobile and dialling

So anyway, anyone come up with some dates yet?

Subject: NN: The Best taped Nanci-show?
From: esa.toivonen@sci.fi (Esa Toivonen)
Hi everyone,
Greetings from Finland.
I am new to this list. After bying OVT some montsh ago, I became more
interested in Nanci's music... AGAIN. I have had all her albums,
actually twice earlier, first on vinyl at the time when Lone Star State
Of Mind was released, and lately in mid 90's as cds. Somehow I didn't
like Blue Roses so much, though.
I have never seen Nanci live but in two tv programs, I have on tape. The
other one contains 2 songs performed in open-air live in Scotland,
probably in 1991 (It's a hard life, From a distance), and the other one
is a part of a US tv-series called The Lonesome Pine Special, and is
according to the end texts copyrighted 1987.
This latter one is a whole acoustic live show (about an hour long) with
a few additional interview parts between some songs. The band is: Nanci:
vocals & guitar; Mark O'Connor: mandolin, fiddle; Bryan Wood: banjo,
guitar; Roy Huskey Jr: acoustic bass. Songs are mostly from True
Believers and Very Blue Moon. Maybe this show is familiar to some of you
too, at least in USA?
As Nanci's commercial videotapes are not available in European
PAL-video-format, perhaps some of you more experienced Nanci fans could
tell how that Lonesome Pine Special -show qualifies among Nanci's taped
live performings. Does it give a reliable picture of her band at that
time? Did she actually make mostly these acoustic shows without any
percussion, drums or electric equipment? On One Fair Summer Evening
-live she had even more simplified line-up backing her.
What might be the best taped Nanci-show ever there is available
commercially or shown in the US tv-channels? (No matter in what format.)
Just recently I saw some short video-clips in Internet of Nanci
performing live a year ago. It was nice to see how she still has that
charming manner of casting long flirting looks & smiles to her audience.
I assume her "thankyoouus" are nowadays as disarming as ever too? :-)

One of my favorites is her performance of about 3 years ago on Public
Broadcasting System's Austin City Limits, promoting her "Flyer" album. Her
sister Mickie joins her and Lee Satterfield on the song "Time of
Inconvenience."
My favorite song both from the album and from the Austin City Limits show
(which I taped) has become "Nobody's Angel." I love the unusual percussion
sounds; the mysterious instrumentation, with the Irish pennywhistle and the
Australian digeridoo; and the intended "mistakes" in the recapitulation (or
return to the opening section section towards the end): the sound of dogs
barking, misplaced rhythms, and keyboard syncopations.
Greetings from Waco, Texas to Finland!
