The interview in the Scotsman has the following item of great interest:
She'll be recording an album with the LSO in April. "For me, it's the
opportunity to do my music to its fullest extent and push that envelope as
far as I can with the music, and have everything there that I ever wanted
as a writer, composer and musician," she says.

Subject: NN: Best of year lists.
From: John Edward Graveling (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
It certainly is that time of year. One of the quality broadsheet
newspapers here in old blighty, "The Independent", has today published
its top 50 cds of the year. It covers all musical genres, from rock to
jazz to opera to classical.
Well Lyle is at No.3 and the comment is," this is the most ambitious of
all Lovett's elegantly lackadaisical works, in which he surveys the songs
of his favourite Lonestar songsmiths over the length of 2 cd's, to the
mellow rippling of Texan guitars. Indeed, Texas never sounded more like a
place where real people live, and less, like a place you'd want to die.
Terribly, bleakly moving in parts. Terribly, parochially funny in others".
At No.26 is Lucinda, "if, by some biological freak, Sheryl Crow was able
to keep making records for the next century, she might, just might, be
able to come up with something that compares to this. Simply put, Ms.
Williams IS THE BEST female songwriter America has to offer right now.
Slightly more rustic than Crow, this fifth album in two decades shows her
at her best. There's no standout track because all thirteen are of the
highest calibre. A crossover classic that will surely bring mainstream
rewards".
Bob Dylan's "Live 1966" is lsited at No. 31, and Lambchop are at No. 36.
Later in the music section is the following preview of Lucinda's gig in
London tomorrow night (yes I'll be there and I'll post a review). " With
this year's "Car Wheels", Lucinda Williams has, 20 years into her career,
come up with the album to make the transition from musician's musician
and acclaimed songwriter (Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty and Mary Chapin
Carpenter are among those to cover her sonds) to a somewhat reluctant
star in her own right. With a voice that seems to have been fed on
bourbon, nicotine and honey, her wistful brand of roots rock comes over
even better live and this sole UK appearance ranks as one of the gigs of
the year for those with any interest in country and rock".
And I'll have been lucky enough to see her live twice this year (Rock on
Lisa and Shawn, I'll be reminiscing tomorrow night!!).
Nanci next Sunday to look forward to. London is rocking late in November.

Yep. Lee told me all about this last summer. It almost certainly won't
be something I like; just can't imagine Woody Guthrie riding the rods
with a celloist and an oboe player...or even that old phony Pete Seegar.
By the way, on the subject of songs we'd like Nanci to record, with or
without oboes, how about Joni Mitchell's "You Turn Me On (I'm a Radio)"
or Bob Dylan's "She Belongs to Me." The latter would have a touch of
irony, but irony, music, and odd pronunciations are three things we
southerners do best.

From: SpunkiGirl (spunkigirl@yahoo.com>
i'm just wondering if any of you austin-area nanci-netters know where
i can get a not-exorbitantly-priced ticket to any of the upcoming lyle
lovett shows. i tried and tried to order on the day they went on sale
but, being new to austin, i wasn't aware that evil ticket brokers
snatch up all the $20 tickets only to try to sell them for $100 plus.
there's no way i can afford more than $25 for anyone--even lyle.
no woolworth's, no lyle, no luck,

I agree. While I'm all for a get-together of some kind, I believe Nanci
is very sensitive about her privacy and wouldn't look too kindly on
folks meeting up in Franklin. And I wouldn't count at all on her
attending any sort of reunion. If you're really serious about something
like that though, why not go through her management, rent a club and
chip in for a private performance? One-hundred people at fifty-bucks a
ticket would probably do it.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

And y'all thought the *remixes* were scary!! :)
Wow! This has the potential to be really nicely done, or bombastically cheesy.
I don't see a lot of middle ground here.
I'm somewhat frightened...

Hello,
A local Dutch singing pop group did something like this, this summer at a
festival with "Het Zeeuwse Orkest" a symphony orchestra, live in a circus
tent.
I don't like the music of the group, Blof(there should be a / through the o,
but I can't fix that), but in this way it sounds nice, the orchestra makes
the music from the band more powerful, timpani is something else as a drum
and string section sounds nicer as a synth.
In interviews on the radio I heard they both, band and orchestra, liked it
and there will be follow ups.

Does anybody have any hunch about who might be arranging Nanci's music
for classic instruments and directing the orchestra in this project? I
believe that LSO stands for Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra?
It just happens that a well known Finnish director, E-P. Salonen has
been working with LSO for a few years already, and I also know he has
succesfully fulfilled before this kind of pop & classic mixing
performances. Swedish Eva Dahlgren's concerts & album a few years ago
might be the best known examples.
Although Nanci's music in common is of quite different kind, and may
need a special touch-up art from arranger to sound good with big
strings, I suppose some slower ballads might make it quite nicely. And
anyhow, IMHO, Grande Hotel style studio arrangements are not so
difficult to imagine transformed for a big live accompany.

I remember vividly the first time I heard this song--sitting in a club
listening to and watching Shake Russell and the late great John Vandiver. Then
it appeared on their album so many, many years ago. What an incredible song
that is. I have only seen David perform once, but I heartily encourage anyone
with the opportunity to see and hear this remarkable songwriter and person.

Yes, sorry, of course. Should have checked some web-sites before opening
my mouth. =) The orchestra I was thinking about is the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, anyway.
Guess I after that blunder owe you all the url of London Symphony
Orchestra, which is:
http://www.lso.co.uk/
although I couldn't find any mention yet about the Nanci-project there.

Just to be absolutely clear, that statement was not meant to be critical
of Mark, but support for Bill. I've said before how much I appreciate
Mark for all he's done here.

But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserved to be flamed for this!!
(grin> I think it's been one of the best years ever for my tastes. I'm
having a heck of a time narrowing my favorites down to ten. I'd still
be interested in hearing more about the ones you liked though Mark.
And (sigh>, this LSO album may be the last straw for me, I'm trying real
hard to be a loyal Nanci fan, but she's marching to a different drummer
and I prefer a slapping bass to mark the time.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn
