Subject: NN: Update on UPO2

   From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>

Hello ladies and gentleman,

I thought about addressing this to all you "dudes and chicks" out there,

but after following recent threads on the unmoderated list I figured I'd

better go with a safer greeting.

Wow! The unmoderated list is hitting 30 and 40 posts a day. I wondered

if I might squeeze in a message regarding the infamous "basement tapes"

project I cornered myself into about a month back.

Well, the tapes are in, and although I was hoping for a few more,

there's some interesting stuff here that's going to make some fun listening!

Below I've listed the folks that sent stuff... in no particular order. If

you sent something and I don't list your name below, please get in touch,

your tape is lost in postal limbo.

	Robert Juliano

	Reid Mitchell

	Steve Goldberger

	Hank Van Slyke

	Shawn Kimbro

	Steven Gellman

	Dave Vinsant

	Doris Justis

	David and Kelly Lidz

Some "interesting" events happened as the tapes started rolling in.

First off, the influx of packages got my wife steaming, suspecting that I

was spending more than my usual extravagance on Nanci collectibles and that

wouldn't do... especially so close to Christmas. Later, she wondered why I

was receiving a strange sealed package from a "Sleep Disorders Center"

(Thanks Shawn!).

Auditioning some of the tapes forces me to say that some of you need to

KEEP THAT DAY JOB... although I will add that ALL the tapes are fun to

listen to. I have enjoyed listening to them all... and over and over. They

certainly fulfilled my original request to hear Nancinetters providing their

own heartfelt renditions of Nanci tunes. Several tapes are downright

wonderful! One submission is actually available commercially on CD but I

was given permission to but it on this tape. Most are recorded on average

equipment in the best sounding rooms they could find... which a few

confessed was the acoustics in their tiled bathrooms. A couple nice

multitracked demo quality items also showed up.

Several folks submitted more than one tune and I there will be room to

include some of these. "Gulf Coast Highway" and "It's A Hard Life" were the

two most popular submissions. Below is a list of the songs that were

submitted. Not all of them may make the final tape since a few folks sent

many songs. I'm not going to reveal who did what at this time.

It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go

	More Than A Whisper

	Do Re Mi

	Morning Song For Sally

	Fly By Night

	Ford Econoline

	If Wishes Were Changes

	I Wish It Would Rain

	Love's Found A Shoulder

	Last Of The True Believers

	Workin' Girl

	This Heart

	Gulf Coast Highway

	Goin' Gone

Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness

	The Wing And The Wheel

There's no way I'm going to be able to get this out by Christmas as I had

hoped. I'm planning to make copies for the folks that submitted material by

early January. I just traded our ADAT 8 track at work for a digital

workstation and 4 track minidisc system but the components haven't arrived

yet. By waiting a bit I should be able to give all the branches a better

quality cassette. I'm hoping that a few of those folks will act as branches

for a tape tree. I'll let you know when everyone can request a copy.

By the way, no one ever responded to my request to hear a copy of the

first UPO tape so I have no idea how this new product stacks up!

Mike

p.s. I'm really behind on updating my Nanci web site with some new items.

Hope to get them over the next week or so... keep checking for them!

// Okay, Amy, Kelly -- you two could make him take back the "day job"

// comment -- how come your names aren't on the list?

// And I'd bet a "huh?" that Kimbro did "Morning Song for Sally" [BP]

Hello ~

Can anyone point me in the direction of a web page with Nanci lyrics on it?

I can't seem to find any (Colin Walton's pages are down), and I'd really like

the lyrics for the albums "Last of the True Believers" and "Storms"

Cheers

Brian

   From: "Shawn Kimbro" (skimbro@bhset.org>

10. Finding a great bowl of soup beans, onions, and

cornbread at a restaurant in the shadow of Cold Mountain

where I got a picture with DR. RALPH STANLEY after he

performed songs from "CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY."

9. Clapping along, badly out of time with a group of Down's

Syndrome kids as THE FREIGHT HOPPERS whipped out

hell-for-leather breakdowns from "WAITING FOR THE GRAVY

TRAIN" at a church turned theater near the University of

Tennessee campus.

8. Watching the band members of BLUE HIGHWAY dodge guitar

necks and fiddle bows as they exchanged breaks while tightly

gathered around one microphone to songs from "MIDNIGHT

STORM" at a free concert in downtown Knoxville.

7. Playing guitar along with Steve Earle's incredible "Me

and the Eagle" after only one listen to "THE HORSE WHISPERER

SOUNDTRACK."

6. Hearing the tight vocal harmony of DOYLE LAWSON'S

quartet QUICKSILVER as they performed cuts from "GOSPEL

RADIO GEMS" with only the accompaniment of one guitar at a

little record store near my office.

5. Finding a surprise envelope in my mailbox containing a

NANCI GRIFFITH cd with a cover I'd never seen before and

celebrating when I discovered "THE LOST NANCI ALBUM" to be

one of my favorites of the year.

4. (Tie) Playing songs from VALERIE SMITH's earthy

"PATCHWORK HEART" while sitting near a fireplace in a

quilt-laden 18th century log cabin nestled alongside a

periwinkle-lined lake shore.

4. (Tie) KATE CAMPBELL introducing me to her mother at the

CD release party for her masterful stories in "VISIONS OF

PLENTY."

3. Cruising back from Asheville to Black Mountain, North

Carolina, with the Montero full of NanciNet and Moonpie list

friends as together we listened for the first time to the

organic strains of "JOURNEY HOME" from JONES & LEVA.

2. My nine year old son Jacob caught a watersnake in the

creek beside the stage at Merlefest while GILLIAN WELCH &

DAVID RAWLINGS played songs from the hauntingly beautiful

"HELL AMONG THE YEARLINGS." (The rest of the crowd was not

so amused.)

1. Slow-dancing in sock feet on a hardwood floor to

"Jackson" from LUCINDA WILLIAMS' exquisite "CAR WHEELS ON A

GRAVEL ROAD."

Warm Regards,

-Shawn

Robert Pugsley should give his prize for the top ten list to Shawn

Kimbro. His top ten in memories was not only an original thought, but a

wonderful read. You could almost envision being there with him. Thanks

Shawn for sharing those great moments with us, being a teacher I

particularly liked no.9.

Dear all,

It was a wonderful read, and if I was doing a list it would include opening

a package from Tennessee which contained a Moonpie, a bottle of Shiner Bock

and a bottle of Blue Moon Belgium White. The ever generous Mr Kimbro had

sent them over in response to various postings about "What is a Moonpie?"

(for Europeans in the audience they're like 'Wagon Wheels' incidentally) and

"Just what does Nanci drink when she's at home?" and in a single gesture my

attitude to the US of A was changed for ever ;-)

We Brits are a suspicious bunch when it comes to Johnny Foreigner (it's no

good denying it, we are, look at how we cling to the 1966 world cup victory!)

and the NanciNet has genuinely opened up my eyes to the possibilites of the

world beyond these shores, and the internet, which may sound a little sad but

it's true.

If we can all get along, and we are a pretty mixed bunch let's face it, then

there's

always hope for the future...

There's a light beyond your woods, Robert Pugsley...do you think that you have

gone there and seen what makes it shine?

Seriously, it would only be sad if you weren't open to it...and while I love

reading all the posts on NN, I'm always especially interested in those from

across the pond, because of the cultural breadth (and really nice people, of

course) they represent. Before I came across NN, I never gave any real

serious consideration to the idea that there's anything outside the U.S. (with

the possible exception of Katmandu) worth however many terrifying hours in a

plane it would take me to get there. I know better now.

Thanks Robert,

Folks, what Robert didn't mention is that he returned that

favor by sending to Tennessee some samples of the whiskey in

Scotland. Like nearly everyone I've come in contact with

through this list, he's a heck of a nice person. I'd love to

hear from others here about your favorite music related

memory from the past year. That's what it's all about isn't

it?

Just to say a public thanks to the various webmasters (now that is

a gender specific term - and pretty 'dungeons and dragons sounding

as well - anyone got an alternative?) for offering to host the complete

NNTop Albums of 1998.

Thanks then to Susan, Kenn, Diane, Hans and Virginia.

Susan offered first, so if it's OK with her I'll send her the final

big list...

And you will all be able to check it out at the (very appropriate)

Friends Out In The Madness site at...
