Gordon's take on the line in "Desparados Waitin' For a Train" reminded
me of a joke I heard recently. Little Jimmie Dickens relates that he
was once scheduled to play a show but ticket sales had not been good.
Still, he was surprised to walk out on the stage and see only one fellow
sitting in the audience. Undaunted, he walked up to the microphone and
declared, "Sir, it looks like it's only you and me here tonight, but I
said I'd do a show and by golly, I'm gonna do a show." The fellow
looked a bit disgruntled, twisted uncomfortably in his seat and shot
back, "Well hurry up shorty, I'm the janitor and I've gotta clean this
place up sometime tonight."

   From: Norbert.Killich@t-online.de (Norbert Killich)

Hi everyone,

I have also made a recording of the Barbican show and can make copies. I
recorded it from satellite radio not from aerial radio so the sound quality
might be marginally reduced, but the good news is that I recorded it directly
to
CD and can make CD copies so that there will be no further loss in quality.
Anyone interested let me know. I would have offered it earlier but only just
worked out how to make CD copies on my computer.

   From: BCConj@aol.com

Hi All ~

I'm de-lurking for the purposes of casting my net far and wide for some Nanci
goodies!

I'm looking for tapes (audio or video) of any Nanci concerts which have been
broadcast. So far, I have audio tapes of the recent Barbican concert; Nanci's
1992 and 1994 tours; and One Fair Summer Evening. I also have a video of
Nanci in concert around the time of Last of the True Believers/Once in a Very
Blue Moon (i think)....

I'd be particularly interested in concerts from the eras of Little Love
Affairs, Storms, and Blue Roses for the Moons....

I await a full mailbox with anticipation! Thanks in advance...

Subject: NN: Holiday Traditions
   From: Paul Larsen (paul@davisnet.net>

Hey, all. As I was doing the traditional holiday baking this year for
family and friends, I got to wondering if there is a site on the 'net that
has info with recipes and traditions that people in our Nanci "family" do
at this time of year. I love seeing how others celebrate the holidays. If
there is no such site, I would be interested in compiling such information
and making it available to anyone else who would like it - Kind of a
recipe/ritual handbook, if you will. Please respond privately (unless you
are going to tell me about the massive web site I overlooked that already
has that info on it. At that point, you may publicly humiliate and/or
censure me...)

Merry Christmas, and a Prosperous New Year!

Subject: NN: Nanci Anthology
   From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>

I wanted to warn folks that there is an anthology bootleg of Nanci's music
selling for an outrageous amount. I contacted the seller who says the item
he has was found in a secondhand CD shop. Folks need to be aware that this
2 CD set is really not a CD pressing but a CDR (dye layer recording). If
this was a "one off" collection that somebody made for their personal
listening, I don't have a problem with it but if someone is cashing in on
this by distributing massive numbers it's upsetting. Let me add that I
don't think the seller is to blame and that he actually found the disc as he
stated. Please don't write to ask me details regarding this disc or who to
contact I don't want to get anyone into any trouble. I just wanted anyone
who came across this set to be aware of what they were getting. As someone
who has bought many a bootleg record over the years and traded items with
other fans I can hardly be a fair judge of the ethics here. The 40 songs
are all studio recordings (all dubbed from legitimate releases) most Nanci
collections will already have the tunes. Let the buyer beware!!

I thought Silvertone was a record player. Now being middle aged I may
have a better memory of that time than some of ye', so if any of you
other middle aged folks agree with me, I'd appreciate some validation of
this trivia knowledge.
I was also pleased to hear Jean Redpath mentioned. She does a song about
Mary, Queen of Scots that is quite beautiful. I have it on tape recorded
off the radio--if anyone knows what CD this song is on, I would be so
happy if they would share.
I am on my way to drive eight and a half hours with my dearest dear
(guess we'll be two for the road) for my grandson's briss (ouch!). My
first grandchild--it will be my first look at him. Sigh . . . . ain't
life grand?
Happy new year to you all, you wonderful Nancinerds. May this coming
year bring you countless blessings and many lovely tunes. Nancy

"Record player." I haven't heard that term in ages. Boy, does that take me
back to my youth. Anyway, Silvertone was a brand name Sears put on a lot of
their electronic-entertainment products, much like today Kenmore is a brand
name they put on all their major appliances. So Silvertone was the name of a
(ahh!!) record player, an electric guitar, a radio, and a lot of other
comparatively inexpensive items of that nature.

I kind of remember Silvertone record players too, at least I **think** they
were called Silvertone (this was quite a while back). I took a portable one
off to college with me. It looked like a suitcase, and when you opened it the
turntable was on the bottom and there were two itty-bitty detachable speakers
in the top. You couldn't put more than one record on at a time, but it played
33-1/3 rpm, 78 rpm, and, if you pulled up a little doojigger in the middle, 45
rpm. If you listened carefully to the speakers, you could sometimes tell if
you were playing stereo.

Uh, I'm not going to admit to a day over thirty-something, but you are correct
that Silvertone was a record player. I'm not even sure how I know this, but
Sears used the brand name on radios, tape decks, record players and several
musical instruments including brass like trombones and trumpets, even
clarinets. Some of those old Silvertone acoustic guitars have become very
valuable, especially the ones with themes of Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger,
etc. And you'll also find quite a few collectors in the market for those
Danelectro hollow-body electric guitars. (But I'm quite certain Sister's was
an acoustic folk model!) BTW, the Silvertone line has been recenly
re-introduced.

And whew, Debbie, I know how you feel about all the sappy holiday stories. I
know they mean well, but I'm going to disembowel the next person who sends me
that "envelope on the Christmas tree" story!!

Duh, should have read solid-body. And be careful not to get the old
Danelectros confused with the new line that just started. Not the same thing.

Really? I have a beautiful blonde-wood one with f-holes and a Buxby

my Buddy Holly stage. We're all young once.

I was actually searching for greetings in various languages but came
across the following site which may be of interest to you.

It provides links to pages created by schools/chrildren describing how
people celebrate Christmas in different countries.

Posted publicly not to humiliate or censure (not this time :)) but
'cos I thought other NNs might be interested too.

Hoping you all have a happy Christmas however you celebrate.

Subject: NN: Silvertone - Blues Christmas
   From: "Shawn Kimbro" (skimbro@bhset.org>

Hey folks,

Since it's kind of slow, I'll tell another guitar story. The most interesting
Silvertone I've ever seen belongs to a busker in Nashville. I know some of
you have seen this fellow, he's usually on 2nd avenue between the Wildhorse
and Hard Rock Cafe--a large black man in his early 60s, he always wears a hat
and dark glasses and can play any blues tune you care to name. The last time
I was there, I couldn't resist asking him about his unusual guitar and
discussing his story. He says he's been offered thousands for that old black
Silvertone on which he has painted folky designs and sayings like "Jesus Is
Coming." There are also bottle caps, a few semi-precious stones, some beads, a
decoupaged picture or two, and more strings, rubber bands, and tinsel than in
the finest robin nests. At his feet he has rigged a tambourine and I think a
coconut shell to provide percussion. If you ever find yourself in downtown
Music City, do yourself a favor and stop for a song or two.
And if you really want a treat, ask him to play "Cross Road Blues." But I bet
you can't talk him out of that old Silvertone.

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

There is a new compilation coming up in January called Sounds of Wood &
Steel 2. I haven't noticed any discussion of it here.

It is a tribute album of sorts to Taylor guitars, I think. It has a
Nanci track on it called "Year Down In New Orleans", played on a Nanci
Griffith signature model guitar. A lullaby for Tennessee Williams, "in
loving memory of his characters".

Yes, awful quiet out here - everyone busy with the last minute preparations no
doubt.

Well, let me just explain the political ramifications of "crass Christmas
commercialism" from perspective deep inside this insidious, wretched city of
Washington, and how it relates to Nanci's world view -

just kidding

heh, heh funny guy, ay?

well, I just wanted to chime in with my holiday wish, and send a special
holiday thanks to a couple of NN'ers in particular:

*Mike Chesman - for his UPO2 project, to which daughter Kelsey and I
contributed. Thanks for your patience (I think I was the last to get mine in)
and thanks for the endeavour. I'll spare you the goopy mush and just say that
it provided for a very warm experience for the two of us and a few others.
Excellent way to kick off the holiday season!

*Bill Peete - for putting together the Holiday Tape Exchange, and to Joe
Werfelman, for the outstanding tape he put together for me. I listened to it
twice through on Sunday as I readied my household for the big day, and man,
Joe's compilation complemented the tree, the candles, the lights just
perfectly to get me feeling more Christmasy than I have in a while.

*Christina Myers - for becoming my cyber pal of late, and turning me on to a
great writers' list, thus rekindling my dreams of actually becoming a
professional writer when I grow up. And talk about a charitable Christmas
spirit, she actually writes me to tell me she LIKES my writing, and wants me
to send MORE. True Christian sacrifice!!

*of course Bill Page, and of course Mark Ferguson, for steering the ship,
making all this possible, and putting up with my rants, sometimes even helping
me to get them out!

*NN'ers who have written and expressed interest in a get-together. The idea
is alive, but now that we've been tipped off that there might be a tour next
year, I'm thinking it might be wise to monitor that news as it breaks, and try
to coordinate our party-date with a Nanci show, as has been done before (how's
that for sensibility, Bill?).

*Robert Pugsley - for the Barbican offer. My tape is on its way, I swear!!!!

And, Debora Avery is right - stay out of the malls!!! That's not Christmas.
I think we should all undertake learning "Going Back to Georgia" every year
during November, and on Christmas Day, when all eyes turn to us to see what
offerings we've brought for the merrymakers, we each stand up, say this is
what I have for you, and proceed to belt it out:

"Well the city snow makes your brown eyes shine, ya gotta look real hard to
find a reason to cry."

If you're married NN'ers, or have offspring (as I do), siblings, or cousins
who share in the NG experience, you could even manage the harmonies. Wouldn't
that be love? Wouldn't that be roses? Wouldn't that be fine?

Merry Christmas all - even those who don't celebrate it - I hope that some of
the magic it's supposed to be about still touches you!!

Thanks gang!!
