Subject: NN: Holiday Greetings to all
From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>
I'm working from memory here and I'm sure I left out a lot of the verses and
meter from the original Clement Moore poem. But anyway, with apologies to
Mr. Moore here's...
A VISIT FROM ST. CAROLINE
'Twas the Night before Christmas and on Nancinet
Not a person was stirring they gave it a rest
And I by my keyboard and others at home
Decided they'd leave ole Bill Page alone
Not Shawn, or Christina, or Margaret, or Mike
Not Robert, or Lisa, or Blake and such like
Could manage a post on this special night
Then outside the house I heard a loud clatter
I peeped out the door and said "what's the matter!"
But what to my wondering eyes did I see
but a big green tractor coming at me.
A blue Moon shown on the fields all aglow
Gave a pale lighted glisten to the hay rack in tow
With a driver, so darn lovely and slick
I knew in a flash that it must be Miss Griff
She called to her team as they drove into view
Now James, Now Lee, Now Pat, Doug and Ron
On Frank, on Emmy, on Fran, Guy and John
To the front of their yards! Now get out that ladder
Set up that stage and get on with this matter
We've got fans to visit this holiday night!
We must visit each one to make things alright!
Her eyes how they winked, her dimples so cheery
Her smile as she spoke made them hurry, not tarry
They spoke very little, then went straight to their work
tuning guitars and singing for folk
They played on for hours and when it was done
They loaded up just as fast as they'd come.
But I heard her yell out, as she roared outta sight
Thank yew all, thank yew kindly, now that's all for this night!
p.s. It Could Happen!!!!

Hi,
I am new to the Nanci list even though I have been a fan for over 10 years.
I am looking to build a collection of live tapes and I was wondering if
anyone would be prepared to spin me some tapes in exchange for blanks and
postage.
Thanks,
Paul Leadbeater

Subject: NN: WUMB Top 100
From: Scott_Johnsen@restrac.com
Hello Everyone,
One of the Folk radio stations in Boston (WUMB) recently published a Top
100 Folk CD list. The list was derived by having subscribers to the
station as well as some of the station employees vote for their Top 10 folk
CDs of all time. They then tallied all of the votes and ranked them from
one to one hundred. Nanci had two top 100 CDs.
Rank Artist Title
49 Nanci Griffith One Fair Summer Evening
4 Nanci Griffith Other Voices Other Rooms
If any of you are interested in seeing the entire list, please let me know.
I would be happy to send it out.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday!
- Scott

Subject: NN: Silvertones & funny old guitars, Cry Cry Cry...
From: "Steve Goldberger"
Season's greetings to all.
I have particularly enjoyed the Silvertone discussion of late. IMHO Shawn
has provided the most accurate info about these neat old funky guitars.
This is what I know:
Original Silvertone/Danelectro electrics sometimes came as a set with a
guitar case that had a built in amp and speaker. I've seen these around in
the used and vintage stores. For collectors the only the original guitar
will do, but as a fun, inexpensive guitar goes, Danelectro has re-released a
Korean-made reproduction and they are great! (Santa, are you listening).
Jerry Jones Guitars (out of California?) also makes a line of Danelectro
copies. They are quite expensive compared to the Korean models but they are
essentially hand made and most likely a better instrument.
The "Dano" basses are true classics. The six-string (basically a guitar
tuned an octave lower) and the "Longhorn" 4-string were actually studio
staples in the early days of electric bass. For many country and early rock
and roll recordings the Dano was used to double the acoustic upright bass
parts. Played with a pick, this created the signature "tick-tack" bass
sound, and also helped the acoustic bass project on live performances. (For
any aspiring bass players out there, you can recreate this sound on any
electric by muting the strings at the bridge with the palm of your right
hand while picking the strings with your fingers or pick). bla, bla, bla.
Early christmas gifts this year from my lovely wife, which are now playing
(along with Dar Williams, Lucinda & Delbert) included - Cry,Cry,Cry and
Etta James new CD: Life love and the blues. Wow, thanks to the NN for
letting us know about Dar, Lucy and Robert.
As everyone is getting mushy at this time of year, a very hearty merry
Christmas and new year's wishes to all of our new NN friends that we made
this year.

Okay, okay, okay,
sob, sob, sob,
sniffle, sniffle, snif,
I know, I know, I know,
made a mistake about
Cry, Cry, Cry
it's Richard, Richard, Richard.
Also I forgot to mention that a guy I work with here named James Brown ( no,
not "that" JB), has an old Dano that he plays in the bars. It is so funky
that he's refinished the body with old newspapers laminated to it and
there's even a beer bottle opener screwed into the face of the guitar for
quick action.

Subject: NN: Thankful for NanciNet
From: "Greg Hill" (gfhill@freshbaked.com>
Everyone:
OK, I can't stand it anymore. I know its not Thanksgiving, and its
probably uncalled for, and even tedious and boring. But, I was sitting at work
reading the latest digest and smiling, and I just though that it brought me as
much entertainment and pure happiness as anything I could think of this past
year (except my wife and the dogs, of course). Especially when I compare it to
the other email I usually get.
My first guitar was a Silvertone f-hole; its just amazing what I see
in NanciNet that strikes a chord within me.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks and convey my warmest wishes to
all you for the Holidays!

Subject: NN: Year Down In New Orleans
From: "Shawn Kimbro" (skimbro@bhset.org>
Bill Lavery writes:
>>>It is a tribute album of sorts to Taylor guitars, I think. It has a
Nanci track on it called "Year Down In New Orleans", played on a Nanci
Griffith signature model guitar. A lullaby for Tennessee Williams, "in
loving memory of his characters".(((
Does anyone have the first "Sounds of Wood and Steel?" I
think it's on Windham Hill. Are they new songs? The reason
I ask is because I wonder if this will be a new recording of
YDINO, or a recycle of the OIAVBM version?
Off to Stop-n-Go before the fake snow sells out,
-Shawn

The first Wood and Steel consists of cuts recorded especially for the
Windham Hill release. I didn't receive Bill's original post and only saw
Shawn's response but if this is a new release and is scheduled to include
Nanci... I would guess it would be a new version. Let's hope so!

Shawn,
I missed the Bill's reference to the album, if you have it please forward a
copy to me.
I have "A" Sounds of Wood & Steel that I mentioned on NN a couple months
ago. No Nanci, but the liner notes had a thank-you to Nanci by one of the
producers for introducing him to Taylor Guitars.
Here's what Larry Hamby wrote:
"My first encounter with the Talyor Guitar came in 1993 when I traveled to
Berkeley, California with a couple of friends to see Nanci Griffith perform
in a concert. I don't have to tell you it was a great show (even though I
just did).
Being a musician myself and a devotee of acoustic instruments, I was
intrigued with the guitars that Nanci played that night. Not only were
they beautiful to look at, they sounded fantastic."
The list of contributors is long, I'll leave off the names of the songs:
Russ Freeman
Doyle Dykes
Clint Black
Michael Hedges
Vince Gill & Amy Grant
Bill Cooley with Kathy Mattea
Snuffy Walden
Will Ackerman (Mr Windham Hill himself)
Skip Ewing & Billy Joe Walker Jr.
Steve Stevens
Laurence Juber
T.J. Baden
Stuart Smith & Joe Lynn Turner
Leo Kottke
Larry Stewart & Greg Jennings

Here's a message I wrote earlier but mailed it directly to Shawn
instead of NN, by mistake. I have the first volume and enjoy it very much.
Ok, Good news!
I found it on Amazon.com and have already ordered it for delivery after
it's released.
Here's the kicker, It lists 4 artists so far and one is Nanci (of course),
two others are Jim Messina and Kenny Loggins who is my wife & daughter's
favorite! They are friends with Kenny and I enjoyed telling my daughter
about the combo - she never would have thought a pairing of her favorite
and mine would happen in a million years! (She's not tolerant of Nanci -
prefers Back Street Boys - after all, she's 15). My wife enjoys Nanci, but
prefers live shows of hers to CD's.
Bill, Thanks for the heads-up, I would have ordered it from you, but it
wasn't listed in your upcoming releases. I will however come back and
order your SVR/Beck collector's CD after Christmas shock wears off.

Subject: NN: Danelectro guitars
From: "Grissom, Mark" (mgrissom@bechtel.com>
I'd be curious what the difference is with the current Danelectro guitars
vs. the originals. They look pretty darn close to identical to me, lipstick
pickups and all. I thought Danelectro just started making them again just
the way they were...
I own a Jerry Jones Longhorn bass. Jerry Jones makes handmade copies of the
original Danelectros in Nashville. I have had several basses over the years
but this has become my favorite. Jerry does a first class job. Quite a bit
more expensive than the Danelectros, but very well made. I just love mine...
And my band that started in the garage in the 60's was powered by
Silvertone. For years, on into the early 70's, our guitar player had some
reel-to-reel tape deck contraption that he used to overdrive his Silvertone
amp. It sounded great. In 1975, we got a slot at Bill Graham's Winterland
opening for The Tubes. We went on stage, the same stage we all had seen
everyone from Jimi Hendrix to The Cream play on, set up in front of The Tube
massive amps with Dave's Silvertone amp and tape deck. Pretty funny...
Happy Holidays to all you N-Netters!

Just my luck, reading the digest in the airplane, when Robert says "no
mas"! Has anyone discussed making a tree of this tape? Would anyone who is
part of Paul or Roberts' generous offer be willing to make me a copy?
And I was unsure from Paul's post if that was a video, or audio. If video,
I have a great place for converting formats, and would volunteer to start
the ball rolling.
Merry Christmas to all.

Subject: NN: Good News
From: "DeYoung, Andy G." (agdeyoun@utmb.edu>
Just a reminder that as you look through your music collection for Christmas
mood music, don't forget about Kathy Mattea's "Good News". It was after all
a recommendation from y'all that I bought it last year, and it really does
add a wonderful dimension and diversion from the otherwise tradional fare.
Thanks to all for providing me with lots of Christmas CD ideas! To Hans,
thanks for your web site sharing the London experience. Maureen Parr, look
forward to your possible excursion to the other side of the Lake for a tour
of Galveston (maybe we can arrange a Terri Hendrix show in your honor). And
to everyone on the NNet, Happy Holidays from a very cold (by our standards)
southeast Texas!
Andy
// I'll second the nomination for "Good News." It's still one of the best
// Christmas releases of recent years. [BP]

Subject: NN: Ice Storm
From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>
Hi Folks,
It's twenty-five degrees and raining here and the freezing fog is
creating icy halos around all the street lamps. As I've watched the
icicles from the roof top grow steadily longer I've found myself
starting to relax a little from the holiday stress. I should be
scurrying around searching for some last minute presents, but the
weather has prevented that. It's been kind of nice staying in tonight.
I just finished a shadow-box in which I've displayed some of my father's
antique fishing lures. I hope he likes it. There's something very
satisfying about creating individualized holiday gifts. But tomorrow,
I'll be fighting the mall mobs--one of those Christmas Eve traditions I
wish I could break! So while I'm in a relatively Grinch-free mood, I
don't want to miss the opportunity to wish you all a very merry
Christmas and the best of all things for the coming new year. May you
each create memories as enchanting as the colors I see dancing in the
ice prisms on my front porch.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn
