Subject: NN: Five years as Nanci's fan
   From: Susan Klemme (klemme.susan@mcleodusa.net>

Happy New Year to All!

Before this year slips away, I want to take a moment to celebrate 5
wonderful years of being a fan of Nanci and her music. These were the
first lyrics I heard the angel sing:

"I've been walkin' in my sleep
Countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep
Where the years went I can't say
I just turned around and they've gone away."

It was the summer of '93 and I was doing a long solo drive from Ames,
Iowa to Yellowstone National Park. It had been my tradition to pack a
few brand new CDs for lengthy trips and the "Other Voices, Other Rooms"
CD at the music store had grabbed my attention for some unknown reason.
I was just starting to develop some interest in folk music and had never
even heard of Nanci Griffith. I guess we'll just chalk up that purchase
long ago to a case of serendipity. I can look back in my travel diary
from that trip and see these words scratched in--"In the truck while
listening to my new folk album this song "Across the Great Divide" hit
me. This album by N. Griffith has me."

Well friends, five years later and Nanci still has me! I joined Nancinet
this past April. I would like to thank all of you for your posts to
this list-- for your enthusiasm, humor, caring, bantering, bickering,
applauding and good old fun on Nancinet. I was able to see her once in
concert in Des Moines, January 1997. I was stunned that evening, taken
so much by her powerful presence, sincerity and warmth. Iowa is not
exactly Texas, Nashville, California or eastern shoreboard, so we don't
see much of Nanci in this area. I do hope to see her at the Buddy Holly
Festival in Clear Lake, IA in February, though. If anyone would like
tickets to this winter dance party I might be able to help. She is
performing with the Crickets. Anyway, you all do an awesome job of
keeping me up with the latest, telling of her concerts and projects. I
have been saddened to hear of her recent battles with breast and thyroid
cancer and pray for her continued ability to fight these diseases with
"dust bowl grit." Nanci, in her own way, has helped me get through tough
times, including my father's death from cancer in '95. In conquering
feelings of intense grief, I found Kate Wolf's lyrics to be so
true--"The finest hour that I have seen is the one that comes between
the edge of night and the break of day. It's when the darkness rolls
away." Thanks Nanci for reviving Kate's song and so many other songs
deserving of your gorgous touch. My best to Nanci and my best to all
here on the net.
Susan

Subject: NN: Silvertone/Levon
   From: Reid Mitchell (o416@erols.com>

Silvertone buffs:
If you want this stuff, particularly the Dan Electro kind, there's a
great guitar store with a web site that I would recommend for all sort
of used and ancient instruments. I'm reluctant to drop a commercial
recommendation on you all, so let me add I have no interest in this
store, except the amount of money they've gotten out of me recently.
Anyway, for all your guitar needs, try SUBWAY GUITARS (Berkeley
California.) A Yahoo search will turn up the http.

My biggest thrill this Christmas was meeting Levon Helm at the new
club he's opened up in New Orleans. If you don't know who Levon is,
well, most of the people at the club opening night didn't either, sad to
say. One of the co-owners walked up to me and demanded to know if I
knew who Levon was, and I said, "Sure. Ronnie Hawkins's drummer."
Which tickled him enough that he introduced me to Levon himself. I
began 1998 by meeting Nanci in January and ended up meeting Levon. Now
if I had only learned to play guitar in the interval....

Oh yeah, not only did I meet Nanci but Nanci introduced me to
Arlo Guthrie. ANd bought me drinks, which if you knew me, you'd
recognize as a serious proposition.

Subject: NN: Two years ago...
   From: Bill Page (bpage@scctel.com>

Hey. y'all...

Long-time nanuits will recall that 2 years ago tonight Dawn-Marie Heckleman
and I put the finish on a whirlwind six month courtship that began with
exchanging emails through this very list. Three other NanciNettters were in
the crowd that night in Spencerport NY when we merged our lives and our CD
collections.

We celebrated the anniversary tonight by seeing the new movie, "You've Got
Mail." I must admit to a certain amount of "been there, did that!"

I'm still thankful for this list, which literally changed my life...

Hope your upcoming new year is fruitful and enjoyable.

Subject: NN: Wood and Steel 2 news
   From: Bill Lavery (bill@villagerecords.com>

Just got the advance on the Wood and Steel 2. Nanci's track is the
first one. As posted earlier it is "Year Down In New Orleans". A new
instrumental version. In fact the whole album is instrumental. Makes
sense with the title, eh? In any case, it showcases Nanci's playing
ability quite well.

A beautiful CD overall and, believe it or not, another standout is a
version of "Caroline No" by Elliott Easton. I hesitate to tell you that
he is from the Cars but trust me, it is great. Imagine a guitar
singing.

BTW, we do now have it up for advance orders now under "upcoming
release", various. Shipping January 11th, available in stores January
12th.

Subject: NN: Cheap Flyer (UK only)
   From: "Matthew Bloomfield" (mailm@tthewb.u-net.com>

Hi all,

Wandering around Virgin Records today I found Flyer in their sale for
UKP 4.99 (four ninetynine). Only one copy in Watford but I was told
that this is a national sale, i.e. prices are set nationally rather
than each store choosing what it wants to put in the sale.

I also recommend Mary Chapin Carpenters Home Town Girl which is in the
sale for UKP 3.99 (three ninetynine).

I had both CDs already but I did pick up Suzy Bogguss's Moment of
Truth for UKP 6.99 which saved me a tenner.

Though not in the sale I also got Jerry Jeff Walker's Driftin' Way of
Life which has Morning Song to Sally on it (no Mr Bojangles though)
which according to the OV book should be on there.

Happy bargain hunting,

Matt "Digging through record bins, but spending a darn sight more
than 69 cents" Bloomfield

// what's that in $US...about $7 for Flyer? I'd buy it even if I
// already had one, at that price...[BP] (OK, so we have 2 already)

Subject: NN: A Nanci compilation CD
   From: Ed Maier (eddie@flash.net>

I know that this isn't exactly a technical forum, but I had so much
fun doing it I've got to share it with you. Santa got me a CD rom
rewriter for Christmas, and I created a Nanci compilation CD. The
beauty of it is that the quality of the copy is as good as the
original. The copy process is straight digital to digital with no
analog middleman to loose fidelity. The installation* was fairly
simple with no surprises, and I had a blast doing it. Anyhow, here's
the playlist:

01. Gulf Coast Highway
02. I Knew Love
03. Darcy Farrow
04. Fields Of Summer
05. Going Back To Georgia
06. The Flyer
07. Tecumseh Valley
08. Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness
09. St. Teresa Of Avila
10. Brave Companion Of The Road
11. Leaving The Harbor
12. Radio Fragile
13. Love At The Five And Dime

I'm sure I'm not the first one to have done this, but I don't remember
anyone else mentioning it. I made an earlier one of all Non-Nanci folk
for the tape exchange. It's on it's way to Europe. Now if I could just
get my $@%&# rudder pedals to work on my flight simulator, everything
would be hunky-dory.

Ed Maier

*Warning: Technical mumbo-jumbo
The rewriter installs in any 5-1/4 bay in the normal way. Move the
existing CD rom to the secondary EIDE as the master, and install the
rewriter as the slave. Boot up and check the installation in "My
Computer". Then install the Adaptec software and reboot. The minimum
equipment requirements are 133 cpu speed, 16 meg ram, and Windows 95.

   From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>

Hi Ed,

I see you agree that CDR recording is the coolest thing since sliced
bread. I'm waiting for the price to drop below $200 later this year to buy
my own but I have access to one through work. I made myself a compliation
of Nanci's songs that were scattered over many discs. Stuff like Tiny
Dreamer, Well All Right, Wooden Heart, No Expectations, If These Old Walls,
etc. There's enough stuff for Nanci to fill up a disc of "misplaced"
material for her fans. And all these tunes feature Nanci on lead vocals not
as a backing singer. I hope she'll get around to releasing a compilation
like this soon, 'cause it would make a helluva good listen, plus I'm sure
she's got a few songs sitting around that we've never heard.

Subject: NN: Spade Cooley
   From: GORDON1717@aol.com

(( I can never find any of Spade's albums or CDs anywhere. Does
anyone know if they are still available? >>

Roman,
I have a number of Spade Cooley albums that I got several years ago when I was
on a serious Tex Williams kick. He was the guy who popularized "Smoke smoke
smoke that cigarette" the Merle Travis song that Commander Cody stole so
wonderfully in the early seventies. Tex Williams was Spade Cooley's lead
singer in the forties. All the Spade Cooley albums I have were listed in the
catalog as Tex Williams recordings so you might search under his name and see
what you can find. They are great early texas swing/big band albums. If I had
time I would go and dig under the stairs to find them but I am supposed to be
fixing the house up to move and if my wife found me digging under there
instead of working I'd be dead meat. Back to the grind......................

Subject: NN: nanci concert recordings
   From: Midnitcafe@aol.com

I would love to get a copy of those Nanci shows. I don't have any of her
stuff, but I've got about a hundred hours worth of other peoples shows. Most
of my stuff is Grateful Dead and Dead related material, but I also have some
great David Grisman shows which a Nanci lover should dig. Or maybe you'd be
willing to give them for blanks and postage.

Let me know and thanks,
mat
