I was unsubscribed for several days so I hope I'm not repeating anything
here. Every now and again Guitar Player magazine reviews acoustic guitars
on the lower end of the price range. The Seagull they reviewed a year or
so ago was priced near or under $400 and they raved about it. Don't know
what they think of acoustics on the upper end of the price range.

Subject: NN: thanks for the suggestions, etc.
From: "Eric Hay" (ehay@gateway.net>
Hey all,
I hope you are all having a happy holiday season! Thanks to suggestions
from this list, Santa was clever enough to bring me four fantastic CD's --
"Cry Cry Cry," Lucinda's "Car Wheels," and Lyle's two-disk "Step Inside This
House." I haven't been as active on the list lately as I was in a former
life, but these wonderful suggestions are evidence of the great forum the
nancinet can be.
On a semi-related note, I saw "Stepmom" last night. In one scene, a
hospitalized young boy asks his stepmother Isabelle (Julia Roberts) to sing
him a song. She obligingly sings a few bars of Townes Van Zandt's "If I
Needed You," which happens to be on ex-hubby Lyle's aforementioned CD. It's
really great to see Townes get more of the credit he deserves. The
fast-approaching New-Years holiday will mark the second anniversary of this
musical giant's passing. Had it not been for Nanci, I might never have known
Townes's work -- and I had the privilege of experiencing one of his last
shows in Austin with several friends from this group.
Best of luck to you all in the coming year.

From: "Thomas, Tasha" (TThomas@vilcom.com>
Hello All,
I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the Red, Hot + Country video
(on which I'm told Nanci sings a lovely version of "If These Old Walls Could
Speak"). I've been told the tape has been discontinued, and I can't find a
store that still has any copies in-house. Anyone out there have any
suggestions, or better yet, a copy of the tape that they'd be willing to
dub?
Tasha, this may be a long shot, Thomas

I didn't record "Red Hot, + Country" on my VCR or see the video in the stores,
so I can't help you get a copy. However, I did watch the TV show, and I
thought Nanci stole it!
Aside from her usual great singing, I remember she was dressed in a really
interesting outfit, and acted out the part in the song brilliantly. I've long
felt part of her appeal in live performances is her stage presence and ability
to act out the emotional scenarios of her songs.
I'd like to get a copy of the video myself (more than the CD, which I HAVE
seen in stores).
Good luck and have a good new year!

There's a record store in my town that is usually really
good about having stuff that's hard to get. You may want to give them a
try.

Subject: NN: Nanci's grandmother's age
From: "Hans Janssen" (hjanssen@mail.dotcom.fr>
Hi all,
Yesterday evening I listened to Nanci live at the Babrbican from November
and in the introduction of "It's a hard life" Nanci tells that her
grandmother is 101 years old, but later that same evening I listened to the
recording of her concert from last year and in the same introduction the
grandmother is *only* 98 years old. It must be the same grandmother, because
she is the one, who said that Nanci had paid attention to her stories.
All the best for 1999.

For anyone in the neighborhood of Galveston, TX or Nashville, TN this
weekend, there are two Townes Memorials. The first is Saturday night at
The Old Quarter in Galvestion. The second is Sunday afternoon to early
evening at Windows on the Cumberland in Nashville, TN.
Vince and I will be there Sunday (yeah, okay, Vince is playing at 6pm)
if there are any list members there...come say hello.
Be safe this weekend everyone, please. Bring in the new year with joy
and love and music.

Subject: NN: re:silvertone
From: Bob Riegner (rg48@yahoo.com>
Greetings!
This is my first message on the nanci-net. Back in 1969 at the ripe old age
of 19 I taught myself to play guitar on a Silvertone acoustic. It was my
half-brother's guitar which I kind of permenantly borrowed.
I'm not sure whrer he bought it, but I think it was Sears. In December of 1971
I bought myself a new Martin D-18 (I know it was kind of like someone who
could barely drive buying a Rolls Royce)but I did get reasonably good enough
to play in a country-rock band from 1978-1982.
June of '97 I had an abcess form on my spine causing me to lose movement in my
legs and hands--so my guitar playing days are over. Anyway, does anyone out
there have any idea what a 1971 Martin D-18 would be worth today? I would
never sell it--but I'd like to know its value.
Thanks.

So glad to hear from you Bob...and glad you found your way to the list.
I don't have the information bookmarked but I know there are some sites
where you can buy/sell guitars...you could browse them until you got a
feel for what people are asking.
Another way to go about it is call a really good guitar store. Fudge a
little bit and say you are thinking about selling it. Say something
along the lines of, "Well, I know you can't give me a firm price until
you check the condition, etc. but what might the range be?" I live in
Nashville at the store to call here would be Gruhn Guitars
615/256-2033. In Houston try Sand Mountain Music Company (anyone
remember the old Sand Mountain club in Houston???)
Anyway, glad to read from you and look forward to more.

Hi Bob,
Sounds like you have a good guitar and I bet it's become an old friend
by now. Whew, if old guitars could speak! It's monetary value depends
on features and condition. If it's dinged, worn, or modified, don't
expect much more than the intiial list price. I think prices for
standard D18s from that period now run from $1500 to $2500.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Subject: NN: Lucinda Williams, and then some
From: JRodriguez@arrowheadgrp.com
Just wanted to let all the Lucinda fans in the San Diego
area know that she's coming to the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach on
February 26th.
The Belly Up is a great venue - it would actually be a
pretty incredible place to see Nanci. I am hoping one day I'll drive by and
see her name on the marquis....
I also wanted to add that I got a copy of the Barbican show
(cd) from Norbert and it's great - thanks again for sharing!!! It's always
great to hear Nanci live - it takes me back to the shows we've been to.
Happy New Years everyone - 1999 will be the best one yet!!

Subject: NN: lost in AZ
From: LISA CHEROW (lcherow@home.com>
Hi all, I'm new to nanci.net and jumped on after I found myself moving
from Boston (which is rich with Nanci news) to Phoenix, AZ, where I
don't know if anybody's heard of her. It's not the hotbead of music,
let alone folk. Just heard about her illness, after a Vermont friend
called to tell me, and was so sad. I assume, by her schedule, that
she's up to playing and I was so happy to learn that she's got a lot of
things in the works.
Anyway, nanci.net has done a great job of keeping me informed on what's
going on with Nanci. I'm sure there's no chance she'll ever play here,
and with one baby and another on the way, I doubt I'd be able to travel
to a show. But, her cd's are my lifeline, listened to her while giving
bith and struggling through the first few months of babyhood. She's my
lifeline and I appreciate all the others out there who agree.

Subject: Re: NN: *NOT* so lost in Arizona
From: Poetmuse@aol.com
Actually Lisa.... Nanci has been here twice recently (I caught her both times
and they were kick #$$ shows) and Phoenix may be a bit slow sometimes, but we
get concerts, we actually truly honestly do. Red River Opry and Union Hall are
two prime examples of excellent places to hear folk artists. I suggest keeping
an eye out for shows- get the NewTimes or The Rep (available at Circle K's-
gas stations, pretty much anywhere)-
our only unfortunate set back is a lack of a decent folk radio station, but
the Nanci net keeps me informed of enough musical happenings for that.

Hi all,
If you want to choose your 10 favorite singers send an e-mail to Peer
Bataille peer.bataille@wxs.nl and give him the names of your up to ten
favorite singers, we all know which one will be on number one. Write some
lines with the reason the person is on your list.
You can see the page where it is listed at:
http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/ayers/299/voice/index.html
It is still in Dutch, but they are working on an English version too.
On the page you find the list the English magazine MOJO made. Add in your
mail who is missing and why and what was the "Greatest vocal moment"from
this singer(up to 250 words).
Give these guys a lot of work in the New Year!
Hans Janssen.

Subject: NN: CD Recording
From: Andy Gaskell (agaskell@kopite.demon.co.uk>
Hi y'all
While we're on the subject of CD recording, you may be interested to
know there is a way to get all of Nanci's albums onto *ONE* CD.
Before you all shout "RUBBISH" I can tell you it's true - I did it
myself about a year or so ago.
The technology involved is quite simple. It involves a compression
technique called MPEG Layer 3. To find out more, take a look at
www.mp3.com. It's amazing - you can usually get about 12:1 compression
without any significant loss in audio quality.
Basically the simple process involved would be to use a CD-extraction
program such as WinDAC32 to extract the audio tracks from Nanci's CDs
into WAV files on your hard drive. You then compress these WAV files
into MP3 files using one of the various shareware compression programs
available. These MP3 files can then be played using a MP3-playback
program. The most popular one on the PC is called WinAmp.
These MP3 files can then be written to a CD-R. I did my CD just before
BRFTM was released but I also included the bootleg 'Sound Of Loneliness'
CD and another CD I'd made (Live at the Warwick Arts Centre) on my MP3
CD. Without these last two, BRFTM and OV2 could be accommodated quite
comfortably enabling you to have your whole Nanci collection on one CD
which is great when you use WinAmp in shuffleplay mode.
These CD's obviously cannot be read in a normal audio CD player as they
are not audio CDs, but any CD-ROM drive connected to a computer will
read them just fine!
If anyone wants to know more about this or needs any advice, just let me
know.
Andy
PS There is another compression algorythm available called VQF. This
is supposed to be slightly better quality and also has a higher
compression ratio than MP3, but I can't vouch for it as I haven't
tried it for myself yet!

Subject: Re: NN: CD Recording
From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>
Andy,
Thanks for bringing up the merits of MP3. It is a great idea for those
using their computers for playback. The sound quality is amazing especially
when you consider the amount of compression the files undergo. But just so
folks understand.... a regular audio CDR made to the standard audio format
will play on any CD player... of course you are limited to 74 mins of stereo
16 bit recording like regular CDs. Now that blanks are less than $2 a piece
it is a high quality alternative to audio cassettes. However, a few folks
have had problems with data loss with some combinations of CDR burners and
brands of blanks. This doesn't seem to be as much of a problem with newer
generation units. Still some of the technicalities seem strange... the
Hewlett Packard 7200i produces better results in 2x (double speed) record
mode than 1x (single speed) mode. You would think that the slower transfer
of information would produce more reliable results, but tests show that the
2x speed produces a lower error rate. HP confirms this! I haven't had any
experience with the newer 4x and 6x recorders to know how the error rates
are effected by such high write speeds but I would expect that the
technology will just keep on improving. Hope we're not getting to technical
here and are providing some useful information to the list! Enjoyed your
post.
Mike

Subject: NN: Blue Moon
From: Gilliatt@aol.com
Maybe someone has already mentioned this. I haven't read the list for a
while. A rare succession of Blue Moon's(Two full moons in the same month)
will occur starting next month. January will have a Blue Moon, none in
February, and then March will also. That last occurred in 1915, according to
the U.S. Naval Observatory. The moon's cycle varies from 29.2 days to 29.9
days, averaging 29.53.
Here is a website that lets you type in a year past or present, and it then
gives the you exact date and time of each full moon for that year:
