For anyone who missed 'em the first time around:
On January 31st, the "Sessions at West 54th" with Nanci Griffith and Billy
Bragg will be re-run. This is the whole wompin' half hour segment.
Then, on February 21st, the Richard Thompson segment with Nanci doing
background vocals on "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" will be re-run. This
is amazing!
Pretty neat - the entire "Sessions" series is going to be re-run beginning
on January 10. DON'T MISS: Emmylou Harris & Daniel Lanois (1/10), Bobby
McFerrin (1/24), Sonic Youth (2/14), Shawn Colvin (2/28), Beck & Ben Folds
Five (5/16), and Gillian Welch (6/6). I love this show!!

(and, of course, don't miss Nanci or Richard!!!! : - ) )

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've added the promo section of my
Blue Roses Page. If anyone wants to take a look the address is...

This group is amazing, I inquired about an unknown recording (Shine On) and
several folks on Nancinet helped me discover the artist and title. The next
thing you know, I'm getting an e-mail directly from the artist (Gove Scrivenor)

Hi --
Want to urge everyone to check out the 1970 Nanci
photo that Bruce A. was kind enough to make available.
I was a senior in high school that year, and the photo is
so similar to the way I looked (except without glasses).
Makes me smile and feel nostalgic.

I guess as a Texan I'm always baffled by questions raised about Miss N.'s LBJ
button. Obviously she wears it to honor a president who did more for civil
rights and education (and was like her a teacher) than any in recent memory.
Equating the man with only one thing is a major mistake of omission.

It is great to be receiving daily postings regarding my favorite
singer-songwriter thanks to Mark Ferguson. A while back I read in the
archives about a mystery writer who uses Nanci 's songs as well as a
character named Nanci. I thought I would remember the author's name and
did not write it down. Of course, I immediately forgot the name. Is
anyone able to help me on this? Thank you kindly.

Has anyone realized that the name "Grove Scrivenor" should be familiar?
Check the liner notes on "True Believers". He played auto harp on
"Goin' Gone". I knew the name was somewhere in my head, but it took a
little while to find it. I'm new here. What is this about a live tape
from 1980?

I just thought i'd add a little information about the movie "Other Voices,
Other Rooms."
it is obviously based on the Truman Capote novel that Nanci holds so dear,
and it is a brand new movie. i don't know much about it (director, etc.)
but it was released very limited in New York and L.A. in december, i
believe. it's most likely making its way to major cities as we speak, but
i'm sorry to report that i have not seen it or heard hardly anything about
it at all!
but ... it is brand new.

Hi All,
Although it doesn't seem to have arrived here in Minneapolis yet, the film
"Other Voices, Other Rooms" has been showing in NY and LA, according to
reviews I just found on www. The LA Times reviewer, Kevin Thomas, calls it "a
beguiling mood piece--dripping in Southern decadence that verges on parody,
but so chilling that it's no wonder that the story has been described as
Southern Gothic." The NYC "Citysearch" reviewer says that the film "is as
reserved and tasteful as anything on the Lifetime channel, but a thread of
not-so-polite angst and anger runs through it."
The novel is, of course, by Truman Capote and this review says it was his
first published novel. The story is set in 1938. I think I will read the
novel and then wait for the film to arrive here.
The screenwriter who adapted the novel is Sara Flanigan; director is David
Rocksavage. The cast is David Speck, Lothaire Bluteau, Anna Thomson, and
April Turner.
Has anyone seen this film?
Oh, the reviews I found were at:
http://new york.citysearch.com/E/M/NYCNY/0010/041/41
and
http://newsfeed.hollywood.com/latimes/calendar/971219/971219-art20.html
And for some Nanci content, let me share that I finally bought myself a copy
of "One Fair Summer Evening" the video! I had not realized that it is the
same concert video that I had viewed on tv at one time several years ago, but
it is still wonderful to have my own copy.
Thanks for the link to see Nanci's high school photo. That was fun, though
she probably would be a bit embarrassed to know that we are all taking a look
at her yearbook photo. I know I would be!

Isn't Joni Mitchell a piano player? (I'm probably betraying my age,

Dear Nancy,
Joni is a guitar player primarily, and of course she did lots of dulcimer
playing on her albums like "Blue" (my favorite of all time). But you know,
there are music books of her songs that are written out for piano and voice,
so the NanciNetter who wrote wanting some ideas for his piano-playing, folkie-
inspired daughter might just want to get her some Joni Mitchell CD's and the
piano arrangements, too.
I don't think you are showing your age at all! Joni is timeless!

I may have missed the beginning of this thread somehow but as far as piano-
playing folksingers goes -- has anyone mentioned Iris DeMent? She accompanies
herself on the piano on about 1/3rd of her songs. It's usually these songs I
enjoy the most although I don't think Iris could do a BAD song. Someone
mentioned at one time getting together an Iris DeMent mailing list. Was that
someone on this list? If so, does anyone know what's become of it?

Hi guys:
Seeing as how it's kind of slow here, I thought I'd share a little Nanci
reference I just found in _Hostels USA_, "the only unofficial, opinionated
guide." Actually, there are a couple of references to her in the rave
review of the Austin International Hostel. Here's an excerpt:

I can see why Ferg and Shelly moved to Austin. I wish *I* were going
on down the road, kicking East Texas dust, to Austin. (sigh>

Dear all,
Could this be Kathleen Taylor who has (I think) three books available at presen
'Funeral Food',' The Hotel South Dakota' and 'Sex & Salmonella'? The last in t
e list was
sent to me a kind NNer and does indeed contain references to NG, but only in pa
sing.
I haven't seen the others, but I enjoyed "S & S". The heroine is a 40+ waitres
called
Tory Bauer which is a bit of originality it itself...
Any other ideas?
