// Nanci on new & old compilation CDs, and another Top Ten. - MF

Hi folks,

Apologies if this has been mentioned here before; if it was, I must have
missed it. The latest newsletter from my favourite mail order store tells
me there's a new record by Ramblin' Jack Elliott due out in March called
"Friends of Mine", including "such friends as Emmylou Harris, Nanci
Griffith, John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker". Any Brits wanting to rush
order a copy, ring Country Music Store on 01580-763936. (Usual disclaimer -
my only connection is as a very satisfied customer.)

There's also a new(?) disc from Carrie Newcomer called "My True Name" which
will please the person who, quite rightly IMO, praised her here the other day.

The newsletter also had a track listing of Kimmie Rhodes latest, which
disposed of my concern that it might just be a rehash of "West Texas
Heaven" - so I'll buy that. What's wrong with the music scene over there -
why is Kimmie not recognized as being the second finest female singer in
the whole history of the world? (Okay, Bruce, maybe the third). Why are
Freakwater not known as the most interesting country group around?

And can anyone tell me anything of a singer called Kat Eggleston? She was
recommended to me recently and I just picked up a few WAV files off the Web
which sound quite interesting.

That's all from a bright but chilly London Town,
TonyB.

I can't remember anyone mentioning this, but has Nanci released Buddy
Holly's 'Well, Alright' on an album?

I just heard her version (studio, not live version) on BBC Radio 2 this
morning. EXCELLENT.

Thanks,

Paul

Yes; the album is called 'Not fade away' - subtitle - Remembering Buddy Holly.
BBC Radio 2 has placed Nanci's contribution a couple of times, together with
some of the other tracks. The Mavericks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Suzy Bogguss,
Mark Knopfler, Marty Stuart, Steve Earle, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many
others sing Holly.

Personally, I was disappointed with the album. With that stellar line-up it
should be superb but somehow I feel it slightly misses. Not sure exactly why.
I'm not that keen on Nanci's rendition of 'Well... all right' (with the
Crickets, by the way) either. It feels a bit lacking in emotion. That's
entirely a individual opinion, of course ;-)

Hello all,

I was just checking CDNow for the Nanci/Budddy compilation and
they came up with 24 compilations featuring NG. Anyone got all
of these? There must be some rarities on these but I just don't have the
time to check them all out. Anyone with a spare hour to spend browsing
through the CDNow catalogue and come up with a list of Nanci On
Compilations would be a very great friend indeed, just so I can see what I'm
missing!

Happy New Year to all our Chinese readers (?)

I want to welcome Gove to NanciNet! I haven't seen Gove perform since
back in the 70's when he was touring with Doc Watson. Mention of his
name had me going through my vinyl to find his old Flying Fish albums.
Great stuff! I hope they'll be issued on CD soon. When are you coming
up to NYC to play?

Hello Everyone,

I received my monthly newsletter from WUMB, a Boston-based radio station
that plays folk music Monday through Friday, 5:00AM to 8:00PM. The week
ends include various folk-oriented music such as E-TOWN, OFF THE TRACKS,
TRADITIONAL FOLK, CELTIC TWILIGHT and ACOUSTIC SUNRISE. The DJs are
extremely knowledgeable and often times, provide a lot of background or
incidental information that I find extremely enjoyable.

Every year they have their members vote on the Top Ten Folk Albums of the
Year along with their staff. (I'm not sure if we all get weighted equally
though.) I have not seen this posted here before so I wanted to share it
with you all. I apologize if this is redundant. At any rate, the Top Ten
list is as follows:

1. Richard Shindell - "Reunion Hill"
2. Chris Smither - "Small Revelations"
3. Dar Williams - "End of the Summer"
4. Alison Krauss - "So Long, So Wrong"
5. Bob Franke - "Long Roads, Short Visits"
6. Janis Ian - "Hunger"
7. Tie between
     Mindy Jostyn - "Cedar Lane"
     Patty Larkin - "Perishable Fruit"
8. Maura O'Connell - "Wandering Home"
9. The Burns Sisters - "In the World"
10. Nanci Griffith - "Blue Roses from the Moon"

They also have a Top Ten List for "smooth jazz and urban contemporary
ballads". If any of you are interested, please mail me privately and I
would be happy to send that along to you as well.

Subject: Re: Richard & Linda Thompson

I'm a big Richard Thompson fan...I have to say that the Shoot Out the Lights
CD is his greatest collaboration with Linda. It's extremely intense, esp.
when you take into account that their marriage was disintigrating as they
recorded. They divorced soon after. Linda tried to get a solo career going,
but it never got off the ground.

Good solo albums from Richard Thompson: Across a Crowded Room, where he
reflects on the divorce (with tracks like "When the Spell is Broken", "She
Twists the Knife Again", and "Love in a Faithless Country"), Rumor and Sigh
(RT at his most cheerfully demented), and the recent You? Me? Us?, a 2-cd set
(CD 1 is electric, CD 2 is acoustic). There's also a 3-CD retrospective
called Watching the Dark, with live tracks and alternative recordings of
familiar songs from various points in his career. And there's Beat the
Retreat, a tribute CD with his songs being performed by such various artists
as R.E.M., Bonnie Raitt, June Tabor, David Byrne, Beausoleil, Shawn Colvin,
Loudon Wainwright, and Maddy Prior.

I MUST say that it's been a longtime dream of mine to hear Nanci and Richard
do a duet....when OVORII comes out I can die happy.

Hello all,
I found a CD I had never seen before in the used bin. It's
called "3 From Flyer" and has "Goin' back to Georgia",
"This Heart", and "Time of Inconvience"on it. Nice picture
of a long-haired Nanci, on the cover.
I don't know if this is available elsewhere, or not, but I'm
willing to send it to the first completist that emails me.
It's $2.99 plus tax and postage, by the way.

Does anyone out there have the lyrics in test format they can send me
for Nanci's song "More Than A Whisper"? I LOVE that song, but did nt
want to have to transcribe the lyrics by hand unless I had to....

I have just picked up a copy of a disc called "Rounder Essentials - A
Baker's Dozen". It contains 13 songs by various artists. The disc was
released in 1997 and Nanci is represented with the cut "Last Of the True
Believers" of off Philo 1109. The disc comes in a gatefold cardboard
sleeve, no photos of the artists, other than thumbnail size images of the
album covers of the original discs the songs were taken from. I'm trying to
find out if this is a sampler disc that anyone could buy, or a promo disc
that was sent to stores or radio stations? Any help would be appreciated.
The disc is Rounder 3719.

Kat and her S.O., Andrew Calhoun, are well-known folk singers from the
Chicago area. Andrew apparently runs Waterbug Records. We've gone to Andrew's
concerts for years now and just heard him & Kat about a week ago in Elgin.
They mentioned returning from a European tour. Kat joined him several years
ago. We like them both.

Andrew's music tends to be what I call "quirky," with some fascinating
and off-the-wall lyrics. Both are fine guitar players & singers. Kat plays
a mean hammered dulcimer. -- They have a web site. I "think" it is
www.waterbug.com. I'll try to check it out tomorrow (I have a sampler cd at
work.)
