// Another report from Lenox, and a few notes about the upcoming

Hi folks...
Doesn't look like anyone's posted an "official" review of the Lenox show,
so here's my attempt. :) First off, Rob, pls. be sure and tell Kirsty that
Nanci missed her at the show...at least, she asked about her, and dedicated
"Everything's Coming Up Roses" to her, after a cute anecdote re:
mondegreens. Apparently, an anonymous poster submitted a mondegreen from
said song, citing "I cannot help but ponder just what relevance that lends"
as "I cannot help but ponder just where Linda Ronstadt went." ;) And, lo,
that anonymous poster was Nanci herself! (Must've been when I was
uns*bscr*bed) I really must say, she *does* really take that word
"relevance" and turn it into something quite indecipherable...I had to
check the liners, myself. Anyway. ;)
The concert was really spectacular, if mellow. Funny, the last two Nanci
shows I've been to this year have been surprisingly mellow...I could swear
that Nanci wants us to rock out, but the audience just sits there. I'd have
liked a little more thigh-slappin' and foot-tappin', myself. But Nanci
looked fabulous, the sound was *fantastic*, and she was really on, bright
and energetic and having a good time. Frank Christian was wonderful as an
opener, and came out to do "Three Flights Up" with Nanci. She also gave the
floor to Lee at one point, singing harmony for one of Lee's songs.
Set list:
- Across the Great Divide
- Talk To Me While I'm Listening
- The Flyer (w/"god bless our flyers")
- Who Knows Where The Time Goes (by Sandy Denny (sp?) of Fairport Convention)
- Are You Tired Of Me ("it took two of them...")
- These Days in an Open Book
- Two For the Road (for mgr. Nineyear Woodridge)
- Outbound Plane
- Not My Way Home (which, Nanci says, is her favorite of her songs. Oh, I
have to disagree. The only thing I like about this song is the chorus: "my
feet have tread upon that road you're on...", and that really isn't enough
for me. But, to each her own. I'm a "Working in Corners" girl myself...)
- Speed of the Sound...
- LEE: I Will Not Forget You
- Everything's Coming Up Roses (for Kirsten!)
- I Still Need Someone (Rory & Johnny Cash)
- Time of Inconvenience
- Boots of Spanish Leather
- Three Flights Up
- It's a Hard Life...
- Well, All Right
ENCORES:
- Darcy Farrow (a capella w/Pat on congos, John Denver song)
- This Heart
***
So, really, all in all, a comprehensive set, and a great show. Nice to hear
some old songs (why is it that "Outbound Plane" and "It's a Hard Life" are
the only pre-OVOR songs Nanci tours with?) and nice to hear some advance
pieces for OVToo. And maybe the best surprise was "Well, All Right," from
the Buddy Holly Tribute...it was weird to hear this w/o the Crickets; when
I saw Nanci w/the Crickets this past fall, she didn't perform this.
But I did miss James Hooker. It's just NOT the same without him. The Wall
of Women, as it were, does not a keyboardist make...and James is one of my
favorite things to watch on stage at Nanci's shows. It was the first time
I'd seen her without him...and I hope the last! Anyone know why he (and
Fran, etc) wasn't at the show?
Okay. That's all I've got in me for tonight.
Maybe I'll actually start participating actively in this list again.
And -- HI MARK!! ;) I'll be in Austin in about a month...can I see you?
Emily

Subject: upcoming tour
I'm not suprised to see Nanci on the road, she's much to young to make life
long decisions about something like playing live when that's what she's done
her whole life. I for one am very glad to see it, and was wondering if anyone
knew the band lineup for the tour or if it's solo.
I was also wondering what the point of a remix is? If your going
to take the time ,just keep giving us new music(which I'm sure will
happen, again too young to make these kind of life breaks) You folks are so
smart
I know you'll awnser all these questions. And please no comments about the
screen name it's a long story. thankyou, Gary

Subject: Three Flights Up
I would like to agree entirely with the person who gave Three Flights Up
a favourable mention.
It's really the song that won me over as a fan of Nanci.
Before I was a fan, I often heard From A Distance on the radio but, as I
don't particularly care much for that song, I never really paid much
attention to Nanci(!).
I also heard Late Night Grande Hotel quite a few times, and I did quite
like that.
One day, I heard Three Flights Up and was finally impressed enough to go
out and buy a CD.
Like a lot of you, I now have all of her albums, but Three Flights Up
still remains a favourite of mine.
I think it's the combination of Frank Christian's fluent guitar work
and Nanci's gentle vocals that makes it so appealing to me.
And no, I still don't like From A Distance.

>> Does anyone know who the special guests lined up for Nanci in London are?
No, but I recently saw a set list on the Jackson Browne unofficial
home page of a benefit concert Nanci Griffith did w/ Jackson and
Graham Nash, and speaking of "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", Nanci
did a version of that song in concert. The song IS a classic and next
to "Golden Thread", it's my favorite song Judy interprets. Anyways,
I would love to hear Nanci Griffith do that Sandy Denny classic!
Kate Wolf did it also! Anyways, will Nanci include her own version
of WKWTTG's on her upcoming tribute album in the fall that will
have "The Hammer Song" on it?
Thanks,
Michael

Yes, Nanci will include "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" on "Other Voices
Too", available in October, I think. I'm really looking forward to it.

Subject: BNC (No Nanci!)
I recall some months ago there was discussion about Beth Nielsen Chapman,
and particularly her latest album, Sand & Water.
I've just come across her personal web-page, and it's really great, so I though
I'd post the URL for all you other BNC fans:
Beth contributes regularly to the page.
Enjoy,
tom.
