Subject: "Treasures Left Behind" new Kate Wolf tribute album

Hi,

I've been wanting to let everyone know about a project that I'm incredibly
excited about. It's a new Kate Wolf tribute album but together by Nina
Gerber. It is a project that Nina has been working for 2 years and will be
released on Red House Records, probably in August. If you're not familiar
with Kate Wolf and her music, check out www.katewolf.com. Nina premiered a
lot of this material on KRCB-FM a couple months ago (on Cloud Moss's show,
Cloud is the promoter of the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival -
http://www.monitor.net/kate ), and she was guest DJ on our folk show this
past Saturday and played 10 cuts. It is really well done. It's worth the
price of admission just to hear Greg Brown & Ferron doing a totally
countryfied version of "Tequilia & Me"! Actually, Nina told me she didn't
really like that song before their version.

Here are some of the artists and songs on it:

Kathy Mattea Give Yourself To Love
Dave Alvin These Time We're Living In
Nanci Griffith Friend of Mine
Lucinda Williams Here in California
Peter Rowan & the Rowan Brothers with Jim Campalongo & the 10 Gallon Cats
Like a River
Cris Williamsion & Tret Fure Carolina Pines
Utah Phillips See Here, She Said
Rosalie Sorells In China or a Woman's Heart
Greg Brown & Ferron Tequila & Me
Emmylou Harris Love Still Remains
Nina Gerber Backroads (instrumental)

I can't remember any more artists with titles (sorry) but John Gorka is on
it as well as two others that I can't remember......

Nina (with help from Bob Feldman from Red House Records) has done a
tremendous job getting all of these people together and having some of the
finest in the folk world sing Kate's songs.
If you love Kate Wolf's music, you are in for a major treat!!! and if you
don't know Kate's music, you're in for a major treat as well....

A pre-release tidbit about OV Too:

Nanci apparently dropped a verse on Darcy Farrow (Her voice was sweet as the
sugar candy/Her touch was soft as a bed of goose down/Her eyes shone bright
like the pretty lights/That shine in the night out of Yerrington town),
especially ironic because of the inclusion of the song Yarrington Town on
the disc.

Subject: Nanci in concert

I have a comment about Nanci's set list. I think the audience always
expects - or at least hopes - that the performer will play many of her
older songs - I, for one, have wanted to hear "Workin' in Corners" the
three times I have seen Nanci live. But it is the rare artist who
plays more than one or two older songs during a concert. I saw an
interview with Billy Joel on VH-1 where he talked about playing some of
his older stuff - and he's stopped playing some of it - saying that when
he played some songs for the 1,000th time, he had started thinking about
the room service menu, the Yankees, his daughter - anything but the
performance. So, rather than "cheat" the audience with a performance
that was on auto-pilot, he stopped playing a few of his older songs.
This is probably true of Nanci, too. As much as we might love a lot of
her older stuff, she probably has played some of these songs so many
times that they are old hat to her, and to keep her performances fresh,
she probably prefers to play the newer songs she hasn't performed 1,000
times.
Disappointing for the audience, perhaps, but maybe overall it makes the
performances better.

Subject: town park at Telluride

This is for the Pettes and any other nanci-nutters going to Telluride.
I have camped in Town Park for the last four years, but won't be
this year because I called Planet Bluegrass on the fourth day that
tickets were on sale and by that time they had already been sold out.
So this year I'll be back at Mill Creek were I was in 1993, the
first year I went to Telluride.

First, general info about Telluride. For all that are going, bring the
following:
        (1) a tarp to put down;
        (2) an alarm clock to get one person up early for
the land rush when you put your tarp down.
Be ready to get in line about 6 am or earlier.
Your compadres for the land rush can sleep until
about 7-7:30. They pass out tickets around 8
now to prevent late sleepers from getting in line
when they start letting people in at 9 or so.
        (3) it gets cold at night (40 or lower0, so bring a
winter coat, warm hat, gloves, and warm socks),
                plus make sure your sleeping bag is warm;
        (4) it gets hot during the day (75-80), so bring shorts
                and lots of sunscreen;
        (5) at some time during the festival it'll rain and it could
last for days, so bring very good raingear. The kind
with both a jacket and pants is best.

Second, camping in Town Park is great-you people can't even begin to
imagine how depressed I was when I got shut out of a spot-it is very
convient to the festival since it is right next to it and the people
you meet are great-I ahve friends that I've gotten to know and am not
pleased that I won't get to see them this year every day-my own fault
though, I knew when tickets went on sale and should have called the
first day (I won't make that mistake again). But be prepared to get there
early. The best spots will be gone by late Sunday. If you can't make it
by then, but you know someone who is going, buy them a tarp and have them
save a spot for you. This is one way that Nanci-nutters can really help
one another out.

As for Susan's specific question, yes there are showers (two each for the men
and women). The cost is $1.25 or $1.50 for 5 minutes of sometimes hot
water. Besides the great people in the campgrounds, one of the advantages
of Town Park is the showers.

See you in Telluride and if someone has an extra Twon Park pass, please

contact me.

Subject: Nanci on Tour

Hi folks: Maybe I am just lucky, but every time I see Nanci she just
gets better. When I first saw her in Cohassett, Massachussets in 95, I
became an absolute fanatic. I even liked her short set with the
Chieftains the year after. Last year at Harborlights in Boston, Nanci
was absolutely magnificent. There is no one like her. One feels as if
she is giving you her entire soul. No one sings with such passion or
tenderness and has that much poetic talent. You could see that she
loves what she is doing and the audience responds with equal
enthusiasm. I recall her coming out in Boston when the taped music was
still being played and she began dancing to it. Boston always seems to
love her and the review in the Boston Globe had the caption: "Glorious
Griffith Closes Harborlights." I have read that she had been ill
during her tour abroad and that may have hindered her performance. What
astonished the Boston reviewer was that Nanci was suffering from a cold
and he indicated that it was not at all detectable during the concert.
Amongst the many things I so admire about Nanci is her modesty. The
reviewer pointed out how she came out first in the concert so that the
Crickets would not be treated as an opening act. She then sang with
them, gave them their spotlight, and came out to give us a rousing
finale. Nanci gave us three concerts in one. I am overjoyed that she is
sing this summer and anxiously await some appearances in N.Y., Boston,
or Maine. My advice to anyone is to see her wherever and whenever you
can because to have the privilege to see Nanci Griffith in concert is
to be truly blessed.

Subject: re concert reviews

Andrew L asked "Was anyone else at this concert (opening night at
Glasgow, 1997)". I was - Friday night, first of four.

This was third time I had seen Nanci and I thought she gave an excellent
performance. I agree that her voice may not have been on the best of
form that evening, I'm sure she actually mentioned it during the show,
but her enthusiasm and energy that night was incredible - so I totally
disagree with Andrew's comment about Nanci having to consider "picking
up her game". I don't think that to be negative is heresy (IMHO, Blue
Roses is not amongst Nanci's best album's) and this list is the ideal
forum for fans to raise these issues.

As for the November concerts at the Armadillo, I hope to be there on
both nights but the tickets haven't gone on sale yet. I've been phoning
the ticket agencies every other day but so far, no joy. If anyone knows
different, could you please let me know (thanks).

Subject: Thanks for tour info...

Hi everyone ,

I have posted to the nancinet previously but I've changed ISP's recently , so I
ve been
away a while, so I just like to re-introduce myself . I live in Dublin , Irelan
and am a big ( if
relatively new..10 or 12 years ) fan of Nanci and her music . I have twice gott
n close to meeting
her at the Olympia Theatre here in Dublin, as I have a friend in the Theatre ,
ut
she didn't appear due to tiredness and early morning flights , but I did get to
meet the BMO , so
all was not lost. I was saddened to read of her " retirement " recently on Nanc
Net but am greatly
heartened by the news now of a major tour and of course two dates here at the O
ympia in Dublin.
I am so glad I found the NanciNet when I did as otherwise I would probably not
ave known about the
upcoming tour till after the tickets went on sale . Amazingly , my friend in th
 ticket biz still
has no details on when the tickets go on sale here in Dublin and in fact had no
 heard about it
until I asked him after reading about it on NanciNet . I will now almost certai
ly be in the centre
isle 1st row for the concert ..A big huge thank you to you all and I'm sure the
e are many others
out there who have similar reasons to be grateful for the existence of NanciNet
..
Also ,before I sign off , I was wondering does Nanci herself ever contribute to
the mailing list?

Thanks again

Robbie asked:

It is rumoured that she has appeared, and she has herself mentioned
in interviews that she has, although what's less clear is whether
she posted on AOL or on here. She said something like she "only causes
trouble" when she does, so she "steers clear" (I'm paraphrasing here - I'm
sure somebody knows the real quote). This is probably a comment on the
whole Nanci/Ashley MacIsaac controversy...it's in the archives somewhere
but I'm not sure where - anybody?

Of course she may well speak through others (a bit like the Queen!) as several
NNers know her, or know her friends, or are her keyboard player! So she
could be contributing more than we know...

....on the other hand I'm not sure if that would necessarily be a good thing, w
uldn't it be somewhat constraining if we knew that for sure?

Robert
