leaping from lurkerhood to disagree. I went to see Bonnie Raitt last Saturday
here in New York, and the set was a tug-of-war between Bonnie's new album and
the fans who wanted to hear every song in her 25-year career. They don't GET
to be old favorites unless they are loved and performed live. Remember, when
we love a song and want to hear it again and again...it was once a song we
heard for the first time, and it went to our hearts. My heart has room for
plenty of those songs...and for new ones all the time.

Subject: nanci cd's, and gettin' to know her......
hi-i am new here, and just wanted to say a little about her music. i have
bought 4 cds
so far. i have flyer, mca years retrospective, blue roses, and other voices.
other voices was my first cd of hers. i bought it because i heard "the speed
of the sound
of lonliness" on kzon, a station here in phoenix, and just loved it, called
them, asked
them who it was, then i fell in love with the cd, and ended up buying more. i
dont know if anyone could tell me other cds which are good, or what you
consider the
best. by far, to me, other voices is the best of these 4. i have never seen
her in person yet, but hopefully she will come to phoenix sometime soon. if
other voices was a tape or record instead of a cd, im quite sure i would have
worn it out by now.
took it with me to mexico a while back, and you would be amazed how good it
sounds of an evening with just the moonlight and the ocean in the background.
i loved it. so, if anyone has any suggestions on the best cds to add to my
collection,
let me know. thankyou.

If I may be so bold as to speak for the entire NanciNet ;) The general
consensus for the next cd to choose would be "One Fair Summer Evening".
Until you have heard Nanci live (or at least a recording of a live concert
like OFSE is), you haven't heard her. OVOR is right at the top of my list
as well, as well as OFSE and "Flyer", and "Storms", and "Late Night Grand
Hotel", and "Poet in My Window", and "Lone Star State of Mind", and "Last
of the True Believers", and "There's a Light Beyond These Woods", and
"Little Love Affairs", and "Once in a Blue Moon", and "Blue Roses from the
Moons".
Seriously, I think your next purchase should be OFSE. Then get something
from the early years - I especially like PIMW. Don't forget the videos
either, OFSE and OVOR.

I willingly agree with Kenn; I think OFSE is definitely the top choice.
After that, I generally categorize 'em:
FOLKY: Blue Albums -- OFSE, Last of the True.., Once in A...
COUNTRY-Y: Pink Albums -- Little Love Affairs, Lone Star State of Mind
MORE "PRODUCED": "New" Albums -- Storms, LNGH
MORE "CRICKETS-Y": "Newer" Albums -- Flyer, OVOR, BRFTM
Personally, I like the "blue" albums (we're talking cover color, not
sentiment) best...after that, I pick and choose. I love STORMS and FLYER,
but the pink albums have some great country-ish stuff that I wouldn't part
with. The blues are folkier than the pink ones, IMO (right?), the "new"
ones a little more "produced", and the "newer" ones vary, but they're more
Crickets-y, old school folkabilly.
Is that legitimate, you think?

Subject: last album
I keep hearing mention of Nanci saying that OVORII will be her last album
(though now she's saying that she will continue to perform live) and its just
hard for me to fathom. Whatabout releasing live albums (like the Dead's "from
the vault" series) or something like that. Even then, she has provided such
fine new material year in and year out, its hard to imagine she'll stop
writing and if she keeps writing hard to imagine she'll stop recording. Say
it isn't so....

Arghhhhh............ somebody finally said it. I've kept quiet for quite a

Wolf Trap just wasn't the same. She seems like she is trying to be something
she isn't. I fully respect her right to go off in interesting and diferent
directions but I 'm afraid she is
in great danger of losing my interest. Perhaps it's my Attention Defecit
Disorder finally surfacing...............15 years and then I suddenly lose

However, at this point I am seriously thinking about not buying tickets for
the merriweather show coming up this summer. Another fellow Heretic bares his

Subject: Off Nights
Hmmmm, I never thought I'd see the day, at least not with NG. I've seen
Nanci countless times over the years. Sometimes she didn't play songs I would
have liked to hear, sometimes her voice, her banter, her energy was different
than others, but until this last year, I've never been disappointed (more on
that later). Same with the albums, though I may not love them all equally,
until BRFM, I have never been disappointed in an album. New directions
perhaps, different sounds, but all captured something for me, grabbed me and
made me listen in some way.
This last year, she came through Mpls. twice, which thrilled me, but both
times it was with the NG/BMO/Crickets set up. The first time was entertaining
for the novelty but I was still left wishing that I had heard more NG. The
second time, with the same banter, pretty much the same song set, etc. WAS
disappointing. I wasn't disappointed in NG, her singing, playing energy etc.,
but in the decision to devote quite so much precious time from what we've been
lead to believe was the last tour with the BMO.
I know we've had lots of pro/con discussions about BRFM and the whole Crickets
thing. Yes, more power to her for honoring people who were so influential to
her (though if that was the case I'd have prefered a show with all the living
songwriters from OVOR.... a la the video), and yes BRFM has grown on me,
there are several songs that I like very much, particularly after hearing them
in concert, but it is still probably one of my least favorite of her albums.
Having said all that (my point, and I do have one), its amazing for me to read
NNetters writing that they think she's lost it as a live performer or that
folks are losing interest. I'll concur that I lost interest in the Crickets
thing, but one tour/album does not a performer make. We're talking about
Nanci here, who has kept us coming back for more for what 15-20 years! There
aren't many performers you can say that about.
Unrelated to anything else, does anyone have suggestions of who to contact
(other than managment co. which has not been helpful) re: NG merchandise (t-
shirts, hats, etc.) Someone once posted something to the list inquiring about
interest but I haven't seen anything since. Any info would be most
appreciated.

few times I've seen her. Her shows were wonderful. Some were better than others
true, but none bad.

My best friend and I surprised each other with Telluride Bluegrass Festival
tickets last Christmas, knowing Nanci was on the schedule. As a result we have
a spare pair for sale. If you can use them, please email me. We're just asking
face value, of course.
By the way, has anyone heard about the Nanci Griffith concert at the Hard Rock
Hotel in Las Vegas on June 25? The Joint is a cool room -- it's where the
Stones played earlier this year -- full of rock'n'roll attitude. Tickets are
already on sale for the concert; will hope to see some of you there.

Hi Nancifans,
This is the second posting...but, does anyone want to get together
for a drink after the San Diego show? Show starts at 8pm--probably
with Catie Curtis as her opening act.
So far there's no mention of a Nancinet reunion!
How about a drink or dinner before or after (I'm flexible!) at
"Red Sails" a great place just down the road from Humphrey's???
It's a little less expensive and those eating at Humphrey's could
instead just have a drink.
If anyone is up for this, or has any other ideas, please e-mail me
privately.
Also, does anyone know what Nanci's current set list is?
Regards to All,
Patty

Subject: Guy Clark(little nanci)
Hi all,
Together with another NN'er, Maureen, Friday I went to a concert from Guy
Clark and Eric Taylor(Hadn't he something to do with Nanci??)
After a few songs from Eric from his new album and a BBQ, Guy started with a
more than 1,5 hour set, with a lot of request he did all the song he
remembered the lyrics of. And he covered his career from more than 20 years
completely.
He did some Nanci related songs:
She ain't going nowhere
Nanci self on BRFTM and less known I think, she does the background vocals
with Guy on Texans at the Mountainstage.
Guy called this his best song.
Dublin Blues
Nanci does the backgroundvocals with Guy on the same album.
Some pictures are at: http://members.xoom.com/BNC/guyclark.htm
If anybody has the chance to visit a concert of Guy Clark: Take that
oppertunity.
Can't hard wait till November to see nanci with her friens at the Barbican.
met vriendelijke groeten,
Hans Janssen.

Subject: Re: Guy Clark(little nanci)
Hi folks,
I just had to take a step out of deep lurkdom to contribute a little
something on Guy Clark.
I too managed to catch Guy and Eric Taylor during their current
European tour, here in Manchester, England. The venue was a small
function hall in Manchester University, with a bar at one end and the
stage at the other, with seating for approximately 250 people in the
middle, incredibly intimate for all the audience, "just perfect".
As Hans said, Eric Taylor came on to open the show, played 4 tracks
from his new album, and also an "obscure" TVZ number. Eric seemed a
little nervous, but his guitar work was immaculate, and lyrically the
songs were of the highest standard, emphasized by Eric's rich vocals.
A great start to the night!!
Guy Clark came on stage about 20 minutes later. He's a big man, in
terms of physical stature and stage presence. And the following hour
and a half was one of the most spell binding experiences of my life.
He played everyone's requests, except some drunk in black wayyyy off
to the side (couldn't resist that), who was totally incomprehensable
to Guy and the rest of the audience, this was all taken in good
humour by all, and the evening continued with the wonderful "Boats to
build".
Guy seemed to be having a little trouble getting his fingers working
properly on the guitar neck, but again this was turned into a
lighthearted problem, and nobody gave a damn anyway. In between the
humour of numbers such as "Home grown tomatoes", "Texas cooking", and
"Rita Ballou", Mr Clark gave the most moving versions of "Let him
roll", "Immigrant eyes", and "Desperadoes waiting for a
train", leaving the audience moved to tears.
After what was one of the finest, most honest nights of music I have
been privileged to attend, Guy left the stage and returned to the
crowd screaming for more, went to his microphone ready to start
another number, then muttered to himself a little before unplugging
hid guitar and stepping in front of of the mic, and performed a
number called "The Randall Knife" to the tune of "Let him roll". Well
I can't find too many words to describe what that song did to me, and
the rest of the crowd I'm sure, but I can honestly say nothing can
come close to it for pure musical perfection.
I'd be interested to know if he does this number completely unplugged
at all his shows, because those of you planning to see Guy Clark are
gonna see something special.
One last word, and I know Nanci wouldn't mind me gushing on like this
about Mr Clark, if you haven't got tickets to see him live, go and
get yourself one now, you will be sorry if you don't.
Sorry for ramblin' on for so long, but when you experience something
as special as that, you have to talk about it.
Thanks for listening,
Colin

Subject: New Nanci song!
During a break at work, I glanced at the "Mr. Showbiz" site - it
reported that Oxford American is releasing a special issue about
southern music - a 50 year history, and to be included on this album is
a new Nanci song called "Dress of Laces." The song actually is written
by Eric Taylor, and Lyle Lovett appears with Nanci on the recording.
The magazine and album, which will cost $7.50, will be available next
month at "better" newsstands and also at Barnes and Noble. You also can
call Oxford American directly at 601-236-1836. REM also has a brand
new recording for the album. If you want more info, check at the Mr.
Showbiz site (which you can access via ABC news' web site)

My husband just called and ordered our copy of the CD/magazine. It will

Apparently the magazine will have articles in it corresponding to the

playing the fife and drum and concludes with the new R.E.M. ballad.

Subject: NANCI news NZ
The Fourth meeting of the New Zealand Association of NanciNet
Coffeedrinkers Inc (NANCI) took place in Clarks Cafe, Wellington,
New Zealand. Fifty people were present but only Susanna and Fran were
there because they knew who Nanci Griffith was; everyone else was
there because it is a public cafe and they were thirsty.
The meeting should have been one week ago but had to be cancelled
when Fran arrived at the Cafe to find that
1) it was on fire, and
2) Susanna had got the day of the meeting mixed up and did not turn
up anyway.
Clarks was chosen as a venue because Nanci Griffith was once reported
to have played there, or to be more precise a Nanci Griffith CD was
once reported to have been played there, but this report was never
confirmed.
To quote Fran " We were a little disappointed that more of you did not
make it over for this exciting event" To quote Susanna "Stop
moaning Fran - you should just be grateful that I turned up".
Included in the evening's discussion were: Fran's recent attempt to
rent the video of "Wings of Desire" (When she asked if they had a
copy, the assistant assumed that it was an "adult" movie and that
Fran was just too embarrassed to look for it in the R18 section!);
getting drunk on cough mixture; and the evening ended with a
detailed analysis of the fiscal outlook for New Zealand - in
particular the poor performance of the NZ$ and the effect this is
having on Fran's attempt to buy up the entire stock of Village
records...
The next meeting of NANCI will be held at Clark's Cafe, 6:03 pm
sometime in June. All welcome!

Had a chance to see Kate Campbell in Chicago this past weekend . I was in
town for a wedding, so I think I might have been the best dressed dude in
the joint:) She played a very short set at Schubas, part of a touring
package with Jules Shear. Her voice is a gem, the mix of her vocals and
her guitar did not seem too "sparse" to me... Chatting with her post show
(picked up a bumper sticker that says "Jesus and Tomatoes Coming
Soon"),she seemed to indicate that she might be doing more of a solo type
show back in these parts in the near future..I mentioned my introduction
to her via the NanciNet..she said she owes a great debt of gratitude to
Mark Ferguson and this list..she has yet to even meet Nanci, but is
pleased with the appeal
It's been said before, if you get a chance, she is worth seeing (blondish
hair and all)
