Hi All,
Annette and I listened to the Wednesday premiers on WNKU this evening.
They played the Sylvia Fricker (Ian & Sylvia) composition "You Were On My
Mind."
Annette said, "It sounds like Nanci is purposely trying to sing off key.
Why is she pronouncing morning, marrrrr-ninn?" My reaction is "hmmmm," I
need to hear more.
Take care,
Robert A.

Subject: San Diego
I attended the San Diego concert last night(6/30). I must say I was
disappointed. Things are way too predictable, very P.C, and stiff. The
pat patter and the PBS-lite renditions seemed to leave even the eager
and adoring crowd a little underwhelmed. To my ears, Nanci's voice
remains uneven at best. Her new routine, comparing the Ken Starr thing
to McCartyism, was a big turn-off(she received more crowd groans than
approval) - she really wants to go out of her way to support THIS
(tacky) President?
The band seems bored; I really missed the depth and power that Frank
Christian added.
The new songs from OVOR Too were kind of lackluster (the Sandy Denny
song acting only to remind me of how great Sandy's voice was).
She did do a very full, freshly rendered "Boots of Spanish Leather",
(apparently as a surprise request for someone in the audience
celebrating a birthday)
And she did look GREAT and healthy.
God Bless, Nanci Griffith - whatever the current weaknesses.

Subject: another cut from OVToo
Earlier today WNKU played another cut from OVToo, the Johnny Cash song "I
Still Miss Someone." Nanci's vocal interpretation is excellent as is
Rodney Crowell's accompanying vocals. Beautifully arranged, especially the
percussion. This cut would easily fit on OVOR (my benchmark for rating
songs on OVToo - I know, probably not fair). I'm happy and ready to hear
more.
Take care,
Robert A.

Subject: Nanci in San Diego
Just went to the Nanci concert a couple days ago in San Diego! I'm just
now getting to the post. First I want to say sorry that I wasn't able to
meet any NanciNetters there. I wasn't sure I was going to make it to the
concert...so I didn't contact anyone. My boyfriend's car broke down and
was still not running by the time the concert came around. It was just at
the last minute pretty much...that I was able to go. My mom got the day
off...and we went. She is a fellow Nanci fan as well!
Okay okay, on to the concert! I just have one thing to say...THE CONCERT
WAS GREAT!!! I don't think I've ever heard Nanci voice sound so strong! I
think it must be the San Diego air! ;) I've been to two other Nanci
concerts, both indoors...one in San Diego (Flyer tour), the other in Los
Angeles (Blue Roses tour). And this was the best of them all!!! The first
SD concert was great...but we were seated far back and really couldn't see.
The LA concert was great too...Nanci sounded great, but the crowd lacked.
I felt out of place clapping and having a good time, because no one else
seemed to be. But this concert...Wow, it just blew me away! Of course
being in the fourth row helped (she really is life size!) hehe! And the
crowd was great! They were clapping and singing along. A really great
crowd!! As I said, Nanci was just wonderful! Her voice was superb...and
mom agreed!! Nanci was having such a great time...of course how could she
not, she was in San Diego after all (which in my opinion is the jewel of
California)! She sang many of my favorite songs and I just loved hearing
the new songs, tho it felt strange not knowing the lyrics! I can't wait
until her new album comes out!
Well, I guess that's it folks! Gonna go back to the world of lurkdom!
Take care all!
KatiRose
p.s. Saw Mary Chapin Carpenter there a few days before Nanci...that was a
GREAT show too! =)

Subject: Nanci mentioned in new Jimmy Buffett book
There's a Nanci-mention in Jimmy Buffett's new book "A Pirate Looks at
Fifty." On page 87, Jimmy is reminiscing on an impromptu performance he
put on in Africa a few years ago:
"Savannah Jane, my daughter, joined me for the last tune of the night,
and we sang Julie Gold's "From a Distance," which we had learned from
our Nanci Griffith CD long before the Bette Midler version was a hit
record."
I wonder if Nanci is a parrothead?

Subject: Nanci in Dublin :-)
Hi all ,
Just a quick line to say "Thanks for being there" Nancinet. After
reading the concert updates recently on the list , I began to pester my
friend in the Biz about tickets for the Dublin show ( even though at the
time there were no details locally ). There has been little or no hype
for the gig so far , though I am sure this will change nearer to the
date , so chances are I wouldn't have known about it till it was too
late ( and all the "good" tickets were long gone ). As it is I am glad
to report that I have 2 tickets for the Monday night show ( Centre Isle
3rd row...Yeees!!!. Where you can literally reach out and shake hands ).
All I have to do now is speak really nicely to my friend in the Theatre
to see if I can get backstage afterwards......The only problem at the
moment is that it seems like an awfully long time till November !! I'll
will , of course , fill you all in after the concert.
By the way , I'm glad to see that Suzanna and Fran are still keeping the
coffee flowing down under Hi gang...I'll make it out there someday.
Yours in ever growing anticipation

Subject: SoCal Concert Reviews & BMO Change
The San Diego Nanci concert was a delight, with the refreshing twilight
breezes blowing off the Yacht Harbor, and the twinkling lights of boats
moored to the landing adjoining Humphey's hotel and concert venue.
Nanci and the BMO performed an outstanding concert, after a enjoyable
opening set by Catie Curtis.
The NanciSet was:
1. Speed of the Sound of Loneliness
2. Flyer
3. Boots of Spanish Leather
4. Trouble in the Fields
5. Outbound Plane
6. Two for the Road
7. My Life is an Empty Book
8. Who Knows Where the Time Goes?
9. Gulf Coast Highway
10. Ford Econoline
11. Across the Great Divide
12. Back to Georgia
13. Not My Way Home
14. Battlefield
15. Wall of Death
16. It's A Hard Life
17. If I Had a Hammer
18. This Heart
19. (encore) Well, Alright
The July 1 concert at the Galaxy Dinner Theatre was not exactly a
delight;
more, a showcase of economic maximism. In addition to admission, each
attendee had to order dinner to assure a seat. Therefore, the audience
dutifully devoured their chicken, steak, swordfish, or vegetable-plates,
and 2-drink minimum.
After an obligatory no-name opening act to mask the noise of clanking
plates, Nanci and the BMO started about 9 PM.
The set was identical as Humphey's, until after Not My Way Home.
At that point, Nanci surprised the audience by announcing Doug Lancio
was leaving the BMO to join Patty Griffin. Consequently, this Galaxy concert
was Doug's last BMO performance. Nanci and the BMO then dedicated a song to
Doug, and performed Lee Satterfield's "I Will Not Forget You", with Lee
singing lead, Nanci singing backup, and Doug trying to determine which
guitar to use for a song he had not expected.
"Battlefield" was eliminated in favor of "I Will Not Forget You", and
the set continued thru "Well, Alright". Nanci added a second song to the
encore, performing ocapela (spelling??) "Darcy Farrow", with only Pat
McInerney's backup of horse-hooves on percussion. I had seen this "Darcy
Farrow" rendition at the Kate Wolf festival June 27.
So, now the BMO needs a lead-guitarist...and soon, judging from the
upcoming concert schedule.

I distinctly remember Nanci mentioning Buffet's daughter, Savannah
Jane, several times during shows when she was touring about the time
of OFSE (late 80s). I think it was something to do with the Woolworth
story.

Subject: Humphrey's San Diego Show
Well, timing is everything! I managed to snap up a ticket to the San Diego
June 30 show at Humphrey's the weekend before the show and it was FANTASTIC!
(Thanks for the ticket info TLORRAINE!)
The setting was picture perfect. There was a mild breeze, the skies were
clear and the temp. was in the low 70s. Perfect weather indeed for an outdoor
concert on the lawn by the bay at Humphrey's. I'm guessing here but I'd say
there were about 800-1000 people there in the lawn chair seating, a small
dinner section and some SRO. I was in row 21, near the center but on the left
with a great view of the stage.
Nanci had the full Blue Moon Orchestra with her, and all were in fine form.
Nanci of course was in fine voice and looking very elegant and lovely in her
basic black slacks and coat and light purple top. Her voice was strong with
that pleasant Texas twang, and she really seemed to be enjoying the
performance immensely. Though my hear sank slightly when she said OVORII
would be out in mid-January . . . only to correct herself immediately by
saying
mid-July. [July 21 according to the Tower Records web page]
Nanci had the entir audience won over from the start, receiving several
boquets on stage, including a dozen blue roses. She played a song dedicated
to Mary and John who were celebrating their wedding anniversary I believe, to
roaring appoval of the crowd. She also dedicated two Buddy Holly/Crickets
related numbers to her nephew Joshua who was in the audience. According to
Nanci he's a dead ringer for Buddy Holly when he puts on his glasses.
Here's a partial set list (anyone care to help complete it; I'm sure there
were a couple more I've forgotten including one from the Crickets?), which
except for the first two songs and the encore is probably out of order:
Speed of the Sound of Loneliness
Flyer
Ford Econoline
Across the Great Divide
Who Knows Where the Time Goes
If I Had a Hammer
Wall of Death
This Heart
Gulf Coast Highway
Boots of Spanish Leather
Two for the Road (with a lovely story of the English couple waiting for a cab
who inspired this song)
Battlefield (with Nanci jumping around a little and rattling the tambourine)
Going Back to Georgia
ENCORE: Well Alright
All in all the BMO played for 1-1/2 hours, plus the one encore (only one due
to curfew and the stage being right in the midst of the Humphrey's hotel
compound. Nanci also brought her opening act (Catie Curtis, who also did a
fine job) out for the last two numbers.
Ahhh, what a show! What a setting. A nice break indeed. If this is Nanci's
retirement, I like it. Just glad I got a chance to see her perform again, and
in a relatively smaller venue. Now I can't wait for OVORII and am a little
jealous of those who have snapped up advance copies.
Bless you Nanci, it was an excellent performance in San Diego! :)

I don't mean to gloat ( yes I do!) but somehow the god of ticket
brokers smiled on me and I was close enough to Nanci in my FRONT ROW
SEAT AT HUMPHREY'S to catch every twinkle in her eyes and (almost) see
her vocal cords vibrating!! What a thrill! Nanci and the BMO were at
the top of their form and the outdoor seaside setting was beautiful,
The set list was about the same as they've been doing elsewhere, with
Wall of Death and Who Knows Where The Time Goes added from the new
album. Because of a 10:30 sound curfew, she could only do one encore
so we didn't get Darcy Farrow too (I doubt if any of the nearby
residents would have complained if she did another tune, but rules is
rules) See Y'all

I have recently discovered Nanci Griffith almost by accident. I was
listening to a Frances Black album, admiring the harmony/vocals and
looked to see who this was. Of course it was Nanci. Immediately I went
out and bought Flyer as this features some of the tracks on the Frances
Black album.
I am now an ardent fan and would appreciate suggestions as to which
album I should listen to next. I did come across a very cheap tape The
Best Of Nanci Griffith which has some excellent tracks on.
I don't suppose there is any chance of her doing a UK tour?

I've not heard this for certain I expect that Nanci won't be appearing with
the BMO on the Newport Festival dates. I figure this format will be mainly
solo, or small group sets by most of the performers. Does anyone know exactly
what the plans are for Nanci at these shows? As for her fall dates (with the
special guests) across the big pond, I wouldn't be surprised to see frequent
BMO contributor Phillip Donnelly playing guitar then.

Dear NNers (especially fellow UK fans)!
Lucky Ann Tyas, to have all those albums to discover! Purists might
disagree, but I'd say she should go for the _Best of . . ._, see which
songs of Nanci's she likes the most, and then start with the albums they're
on. Nanci's style has never remained static, and not everyone likes all her
different voices equally well.
General opinion, though, probably has it that the best albums are her third
and fourth, _Once in a Very Blue Moon_ (1984) and _Last of the True
Believers_ (1986), which (to my ear) a more `country' tone, though very
hard to pigeonhole; plus her more recent album of cover versions, _Other
Voices Other Rooms_. I also have a personal liking for _Flyer_ (which Ann
has), _Little Love Affairs_ (1988, rather gentle for some tastes but a
wonderfully composed set), and _Lone Star State of Mind_ (1987). Then of
course there's the live album _One Fair Summer Evening_ (1988), which gives
a true flavour of Nanci's on-stage story-telling and wit. But I if carry on
I'll have mentioned them all!
For general information see the Gulf Coast Highway page:
http://www.sover.net/~rschrull/ngriffith/gchpage.html
or The Blue Moon Page, which contains a discography:
http://www.rahul.net/frankf/nanci.html
>I don't suppose there is any chance of her doing a UK tour?
Perfect timing for the first of the new believers! Nanci, who said last
year she was not touring again, has changed her mind and is coming (with
guests) to Dublin on 23-4 Nov., Glasgow 26-7, the Barbican on 29-30 Nov.,
and Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent (Victoria Halls) on 1 Dec.
