Hi y'all,
I have my copy of OV2 and maybe I'm the first with an official copy with =
the booklet. And it's a pity for all the other Nanci fans here because =
it was the only copy they had in the store. I was listening to some =
other music and the storekeeper was working with the new disc, which =
came in today, and there it was and it was sold immediately. From what I =
heard on the car CD-player correspond with the things I read from the =
people, who were so lucky to get a promo copy.
The booklet is in the same style as from OVOR with the pictures of the =
songwriters next to the lyrics and a nice photo's of Nanci on the front.
met vriendelijke groeten,
Hans Janssen.

Subject: Two Nanci Concerts in NJ?
Two (maybe) upcoming concerts:
The Music-Car search engine lists a concert with Dar Williams and Nanci
next month on Friday, August 7 in Stanhope, NJ at Waterloo Village. Its
a great venue. Waterloo folks say the concert is planned, but tickets
are not yet on sale, and they can't say when they will be on sale. This
sounds like a great duo, but will it happen. Dar's booking agent can't
confirm the appearance (when I spoke to him today) and it doesn't appear
on Nanci's tour dates on the net. See
http://www.sover.net/~rschrull/ngriffith/ngtour.html
Is it real? Any information anyone?
Nanci also is to play on Saturday, August 1, 1998 at the Newport on the
Road series (with Joan Baez and others) in Camden, NJ, at the
E-Center. Information Phone: 609-365-1300. Or check the net at:
http://www.electricfactory.com/concerts/august.html and order on line.
Order your tickets now!!! Rumor is that the Atlanta concert in the
series was cancelled because of low ticket sales. Don't let that
happen to this one!

Subject: Cancellation
I swear I will never never dis Nanci for any reason (not that I would
have one) but allow me this opportunity to ask "whassup?"
I see a listing on her web page that she will be performing here in
Arcata. I call the venue and indeed she is to return as she "promised"
since she became ill when she was here in 93 and could not go on. They
ask me, since I write concert information for the local daily paper, if
I would put a piece in early to announce her return. They think a lot of
people would want to know (a lot would, indeed--she's LOVED around
here!) I call Gold Mountain to get any info I can and talk to Alan
Koenig. I write something up that went into today's paper. I get a call
from Alan yesterday and returned his call today. He called to tell me to
call the publicity person at Electra for a recent photo for future use.
I call Brian at Electra and he says Nanci cancelled the show--did not
give me a reason. I call the venue and they said they had been contacted
last night that she was cancelling. He appeared annoyed as this was the
second time. Now the first time could not be helped, it was not her
fault. I hope she has a very good reason for this, not just because I am
disappointed, but I fear she will not be asked to come back again. What
happened the first time was a bummer but understandable. We cannot
understand this and this is a bit harder to take. Someone explain, help
me out here. Give me a reason to believe.

Subject: Hard to find albums/CD's
To All concerned:
I hate to give away my secret spot, but I know the stress of not being able to
find a Nanci album. I have ALL of them and one place stands out as the place
that got those hard to find, a little shop near the University of South
Carolina, near the club where I first saw Nanci way back in the eighties:
PAPA JAZZ RECORD SHOPPE
2014 GREEN STREET
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA
803-256-0095
They always have Nanci, new or used, and can make arrangements to ship. Just
don't tell when you call, I sent you. I know he will be swamped with Nanci
fans as soon as his shop opens this morning.

Subject: Michigan appearance
Hey y'all.
This is my first post to this DEE-LUXE EXTRA GROOVY SITE. I'm an NG fan from
way back. Couple weeks ago I saw a listing of NG shows; one was at Pine Knob
Music Theater in Clarkston, MI on Ausust 22. Anybody know anything about it?
Right now I am a transplanted Paris, Texas girl living in NYC, but I am moving
to Grand Rapids, MI in two weeks! I checked a map and Clarkston is not too
far from Grand Rapids. I'd love to hear from any Michigan netters and/or
anyone that knows about this concert.
Thanks! Margaret

In response to the question about other Nanci-type artists...
Iris Dement, who has a different, but equally unique lilt in her voice, might
be a good choice. When I began listening to her CD's, my son (then 8 or 9)
recognized her voice from some work she'd done on the Nickelodeon children's
network. My mother, 75, describes her as "earnest." I think that suits her.
Much like Nanci, one can't mistake her voice for any other's.
Happy listening.

Subject: Nanci Videos
Hi: In response to inquiries on Nanci videos: the Ladyslipper catalogue
(800-634-6044) has both Other Voices as well as One Fair Summer Evening
listed as available. Give them a try. Also my sister- in -law just sent
me an article in a San Francisco paper about Nanci. One interesting
story that I had never heard before was that in the mid 80's Nanci did
not realize that she was as popular as she was in Ireland. She began to
sing "Trouble in the Fields" on a TV show and everyone got up. Nanci
thought: "My God they are leaving." They were, however, getting up to
applaud the song which was a hit in Ireland and Nanci was completely
unaware of this. Another example of how unassuming Nanci is and why we
love her. Best wishes, JIm Troiano.

Give a listen to Melanie, one of the great singers from the late 60's till
present. She hit pop market appeal with "Brand New Key" and "Candles in the
Rain". She covered James Taylor's "Carolina in my Mind" (one of my favorites
along with "Animal Crackers", "Ring the Living Bell")
Rhino records offers a best of CD of her music. I hope you give her a listen.
Your daughter has great taste for an eight year old. This proves that
children are a product of their environment.

This is Marty Welch, back on NanciNet after about a year's absence. I have
links to Davey Jones' page and several others at

I still need to add a link to Amy's parodies. It's been a busy year!

Subject: remembering the fest
It was great reading all the reflections on the Kate Wolf Fest. Hi Ron,
it was very nice meeting you as well. Yes indeed, you meet the nicest
people through the Nancinet. I call us all Nancinerds! And THANK YOU
Peetes for the FABULOUS photos. As Ron noticed I only had a little fixed
focus camera as my good one is loaned out to my daughter--tho I got some
photos, they are not as good as they might have been. I tell folks I
drove a very long way to celebrate Kate's music with Nanci et al, and
the heat was hard on this old broad who is used to coastal tempatures,
but the experience is oh so good for the soul. I noticed that Nanci's
scheduled date at CenterArts for September 23 is not posted. I have the
glorious task of writing an early preview, a regular preview, and a
review of Nanci's show for the local daily. Getting to do concert
preveiws and reviews gets me into some great shows and the opportunity
to get to know some fine artists. This is the second reveiw of Nanci I
am doing and I will tell you it is no easy task to write about someone
like her without the urge to gush and wind up sounding like a goof. My
editor says it is fine to write with that kind of enthusiasm. I guess .
. . Any of you folks out there northcoast netters, and/or planning to
attend her show in Arcata? Perhaps we can "party down" at the bar in the
hotel when the show is over. Well, not too much--the next day is a work
day. Nana

Here in Columbus, Ohio we have the greatest public radio station (WCBE).
It plays the widest variety of music imaginable, including Nanci. Every
week they have a featured album of the week and play it, in it's
entirety, on Monday. Did I turn on the radio yesterday afternoon as I
almost alway do? Of course not. If I had, I would have had the
pleasure of listening to Nanci's "Other Voices, Other Words II"
AARRGG!!!!!!
Debbie "kicking myself on Tuesday" Avery
I'm listening to "Wasn't that a Mighty Storm," and I'm curious. I've
heard Nanci's voice only once, and that was a very short chorus. Are
all the songs like that? I mean, if I buy a Nanci disc, I want to hear
Nanci!

Hello all,
I've got to agree with John Davis about the Lucinda Williams album,
I also thought it might be hard to track down, but no, there it was
at the front of the W's in one of my local record stores. On first hearing
I thought "what's all the fuss? It's pretty good but it ain't that good..",
which is strangely what I thought about the latest Kate Campbell
as well, but then another play and suddenly I'm thinking (like I did
with the Kate Campbell) "album of the year!". I've got it in my CD changer
with Steve Earle (El Corozan), Billy Bragg and Wilco (the Woody Guthrie
tribute thing), Tish Hinojosa (Destiny's Gate), KC (as mentioned) and
R.E.M. (New Adventures...) and the contrasts and similarities go together
very nicely...lots of guitars, lots of melodies, great lyrics...anyway just
adding my recommendation (in case anyone hasn't got the message yet!)
I don't know if anyone's mentioned the BB&Wilco; collaboration, but
if you haven't heard it yet (and if you like this kind of thing, I know
it's not to everyone's taste) I would recommend you do. A friend gave
it to me for my birthday (with a Big Star album - remember them?)
and I haven't stoppped playing it since (in between the other things
you understand), anyone who likes Woody Guthrie's songs will love this
I'm sure.
Best wishes to every one of you,
Robert (Pugsley)

Subject: free LP Winner
Well, as promised, all entries in the "Last Of The True Believers" LP
giveaway were reviewed after July 15th. I enjoyed reading everyone's pleas,
threats, poetry and more.... but the winning entry was just too scary for
me to ignore!
The winner is Sid Porter with this entry....
----------------------
Dear Mr. Chesman,
I'm writing this for Mr. Porter, who was brought into my ward here
at the mental hospital yesterday in a straight jacket. He was screaming
something about a Nanci Griffith CD and and saying he had to have it .
Now he's going on and on about an LP of "Last of the True Believers".
He said that he is going to be in Tenn. next week and , if he doesn't
get the LP, he's going to melt down your entire Nanci CD collection and
degause {spelling] all of your Nanci tapes. I think you really should
take him serious. They all think I'm nuts!!!!
Yours truly,
Mr. Porter's roomate
P.S. Who is Nanci Griffith and what the hell is an LP?????
---------------------------------
Sid,
Now, this was really written by you and not your roommate right? It was
just a joke on your part, isn't that so? Gulp! ...you were just kidding me
some huh? Anyway, I just thought you should know I've had alarms installed
in my music room and the big animals roaming my yard are attack dogs. You
don't want to come to Tennessee next week the weather here's been hot and
awful. Stay back home and watch your mailbox for the Nanci vinyl you have
won.
Best Wishes,
Your good friend :-)
Mike

many thanks to all you NanciNetters who took the trouble to respond to
my plea ["new fan - what do you recommend"]. Also I am extremely
grateful for the info on Nanci's tour dates in the UK and hope to be at
the Barbican. Suggestion: could we wear badges identifying ourselves as
NanciNetters?
I have sifted through all your suggestions as to what album I should
listen to next and was on the verge of buying LNGH-I'm getting used to
the shorthand- when my husband bought me OVOR for my birthday. It will
need to grow on me but I really enjoyed Wimoweh and Clare to Here. The
latter I have on The Best of.. and love it though it can make me cry!
Now onto Lucinda. UK residents may have seen the Sunday Times review of
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Stewart Lee waxed lrical about it....
Her voice is simply phenomenal, a honey and ashes cocktail that can
switch from gentle cajoling to strident declamation in a second....A
strong contender for album of the year.
I think I am going to have to have it.
Ann Tyas
