Subject: Article on Nanci
Hi folks: There was a wonderful article/ review by Scot Alarik of Nanci's
work in the sunday, July 19 issue of the Boston Globe. Enclosed are some
highpoints about our hero: "For folk-pop star Nanci Griffith, sharing the
spotlight is not merely a gesture; it's a way of life. Ever since the
Texas-born songwriter's salad days touring the nation's coffeehouses in
her beat-up Datsun, she has always given much of her stage time to singing
the praises-and the songs-of writers who inspired her." "She is a major
star now, singing at Harborlights and Symphony Hall, rather than the
coffeehouses like the Club Passim that launched her career." After writing
about the astounding success of OV1, he praises the new disc: "Fans of the
first disc may be taken aback at first by the much more pop-fired , 19 cut
sequel. After a few listens, though, its warm spirit and classic song
selection will likely make it the same treasure the first one has become.
Where the original was austerely acoustic in tone, this is a
bright-hearted, rootsy stomp. Griffith calls it " a folk festival on
record." "Despite the symphony of voices, Griffith's vocals shine, all
the more so for the many styles she tackled. LIke most Texans, she has
something o an adaptable drawl, which she notches up or down as required:
up to heat up her for brisk tunes, down for more intricate and
confidential ballads." "On Sandy Denny's demanding "Who Knows Where the
Time Goes," she brilliantly walks the edge between Denny's desolate
orginal and Judy Collin's more ethereal cover. Without surrendering the
mystical allure of of Collins' more familiar version, she delivers all the
tragic, primal hurt in lines like: "Sad deserted shore/Your fickle
friends are leaving." She says that this will be the last volume of Other
Voices and the record will be the last for " a long time." She says "I
want to be off the road to get a different time for Nanci Griffith>" I
want to totally change things, and after the tour for this record, that's
what I'll be doing. But I think it's important to give back, and this is
my way of giving back to the industry that has been extremely kind and
good to me, to give back to my audiences, and to pass this music on. I
just think it's so important to do that." These are some of the
highlights of the feature article and I hope that we hear her and see her
wherever and whenever we can. She is the best. SIncerely, Jim Troiano.

Hi : There is another great quotation about the album from the Boston
Globe I forgot to include: "Where even the best CDs may offer only a few
special moments, this moves from highlight to highlight, as original
authors trade verses with Griffith, and contemporary singers duet with
their songwriting heroes." Also the Rolling Stone gave the album a very
favorable review calling it "a fantasy Newport Folk Festival Album." After
listening to the album several times, I recommend that fans give
"Yarrington Town" a few listens: it grows in power and shows Nanci's
lovely voice at its best. I look forward to Letterman tonight. Best
Wishes, JIm Troiano.

Hi! everyone, this is it, only a few more days to wait for Nanci's

few days after you all.
I am also looking to get tickets for the Saratoga N.Y. concert on august
the 8th but so far no such luck... anyone can help on this one??? Ill'be
wearing my nancinet "T" if I can make it there... Is this a Nanci

I would take a chance and drive there but it's a four hour drive (

Anyone see the Lucinda Williams appearance on Conan O'Brien (or was it
Letterman?)a week or so ago? Yikes! Night of the living dead.
God, she looked terrible. Her voice was weaker and flatter than mine
(that ain't a compliment). The whole effect was dreadful. What a
disappointment. Her albums are pretty overrated, in my opinion, but live
is really, really bad.
(As a back-up singer with Steve Earle, or similar, she IS pretty good)
What's the deal with her cult? Borrow a tape of this show from a
friend, and let the deprogramming begin.

Well Paul, I'm a newly baptized convert into the cult of Lucinda, and
I'm heading to Nashville tonight to begin my live de-programming. I'll
be sure and let you know how dreadful she is. As for overrated, this
issue of Rolling Stone calls her "the best songwriter in America today".
Don't know about that, but she's sure getting lots of acclaim for "Car
Wheels on a Gravel Road". Personally, I think it's one of the best
albums I've heard in a couple of years, but I've heard Gillian's "Hell
Among the Yearlings" now, and it fantastic. This is *THE* year of the
NAFSS!
Obsessively,
-Shawn

While I'm glad to see Lucinda getting some long overdue acclaim, and Car
Wheels deserves every word of praise devoted to it, I have to say that
there are a couple Lucinda albums I like more. Her self-titled album is by
far my favorite. Songs such as "Big Red Sun Blues", "Passionate Kisses",
and "I Just Wanted to See you so Bad" are all classics. Sweet Old World
(the album prior to Car Wheels) has a few timeless songs (such as
"Something About What Happens When we Talk"), but seems a bit less raw to
me. A little too produced. Still head and shoulders above the best
releases of most other musicians, imho.
Even her 2nd Smithsonian release "Happy Woman Blues" has fantastic original
songs in a strongly southern vein (her first album, also on Smithsonian
Folkways, is covers of folk/blues standards).
I discovered Lucinda via Austin City Limits around the time of "Sweet Old
World", and it seemed that each earlier album i picked up was better than
the last one. You can't go wrong with any of them, but the self-titled one
is definitely a desert-island disc. And just recently re-released with
some bonus tracks. Sadly, i can't justify buying the album again for a few
extra songs.

How many groups have done Gulf Coast Highway? I've got four of them so far:
Nanci Griffith and James Hooker
Nanci Griffith and Darius Rucker
Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson
Evangeline and Jimmy Buffett
I stumbled across the fourth one a few minutes ago in a used bookstore
in North Arlington. Are there any more out there?

Forgive me if I'm not up-to-date on the latest goings-on on NN.
What is left of the Gulf Coast Highway Page at the moment still
offers tour dates, including one in Chastain Park in Atlanta.
If you Alta Vista about for Chastain Park information one finds
two of sets, one with the local orchestra, and one not -- but
unless I'm blind nothing about Nanci. Any details of this
appearance would be most appreciated.
Thank you kindly ;-)

Subject: first impressions.....
Okay, here goes. I'm new to this, but having a lot of fun trying it
out. I've been a fan of Nanci for eight years.....I guess I should
point out that I'm 15. I love just about every kind of
music.....except rap and opera, so naturally Nanci covers both ends of
the spectrum for me. My favorite album is Flyer, my favorite song 'On
Grafton Street'. I live in Delhi, NY, a tiny speck where I have no
peers to share Nanci with.
I'm going to a concert this summer--in Saratoga NY on August 9. It's
the Newport Folk Festival on tour, and it includes Joan Baez, Allison
Krauss, Lyle Lovett and Bela Fleck. Is anyone else going?? This will
be my first concert, and I'm VERY excited! I've gone back and read
much of the NN archives, and reading all those stellar concert reviews
only makes me more psyched!
Like all of you, I too cannot wait for OV/OR Two to debut. I think
I'll probably be the first one in NY to own it! (The race is on! :-)
My other favorite performers are David Mallett, Christine Lavin, The
McGarrigles, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Kate Wolf, and Emmy. Nanci, of
course, is my all-time favorite.
Well, I guess that's all I have to say for awhile.

Hi Blue Mooners,
Lucinda Williams put on an excellent show in Nashville last night. She was
in exquisite form for two solid, nonstop hours despite suffocating heat and
humidity in a packed club. Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller showed up as
surprise guests. The report on the NanciNet last week about her lackluster
performance on Conan O'Brien's talk show had me a bit worried before the
concert, but Lucinda was impeccable. Her voice was in fine form, and she
looked healthy and genuinely happy to be performing. She's sporting a new
hairdo; she's gone from shoulder-length blonde hair to a very sassy
brunette cut. If she's touring near you, go, go, GO!
The Blue Moon Orchestra's Ron de la Vega was playing for Etta Britt, who
opened for Lucinda's show. Fran Breen, drummer extraordinaire and former
Nanci bandmember, played for Lucinda.
I noticed on Musi-Cal that Lee Satterfield will be playing at the Bluebird
Cafe this Saturday night (7/25) along with Chris Crawford, Jimmy Carpenter,
and Nancy Hanson.
Oh yeah, this list is about Nanci Griffith, isn't it? (g> Take heart,
guys, tomorrow's the big release day for OVToo, and my copy's on the way
from Bill and the Village Records people. It's gonna be all Nanci for a
while, I'm sure. Meanwhile, I hope everyone keeps talking about other
singer-songwriters. It's how I find out about good music in this pop-muzak
land I'm living in.

Subject: The Night Before OV Too
A friend of mine bought me the July-August edition of No Depression
Magazine, which featured a review of OV Too, Cash/Nelson VH1
Storytellers, and Sandy Denny's Gold Dust: Live at the Royalty -The
Final Concert. It's cover features a lengthy article on Lucinda Williams
and her latest CD. There is also a nice article on Billy Bragg's cover
of Woody Guthrie.
Anyway, recent postings to the NNet by those of you lucky enough to have
heard this CD have been right on in your reviews of OV Too, judging from
the this review. In it, Brad Buchholz opines:
"While the new album shares the same sense of appreciation as the
original, it is dramatically different in tone and pacing and style.
It's a busier, looser, more communal album...Nanci's fans will be
surprised how frequently she steps aside on the 19-tune collection,
singing harmony or surrendering the vocal completely to singer such
as...(Nanci) often plays the role of musical ringleader instead of
featured singer...Ultimately, Other Voices, Too doesn't match the
crafted intimacy of her Grammy-wining original. But then again, it
doesn't aspire to. Nanci Griffith has found a new way to say thank you,
and the sheer selflessness of the album pays homage to what the music,
ultimately, is all about."
Counting of Bill Lavery at Village Records to ship me my copy (and
poster) real soon.

I'm so happy! I got my OV Too today for the bargain price of 14.99.
The local book/music store(Hastings) where I bought it had about 30
copies, and I was happy to see that. My favorite songs are "Wings of a
Dove" and "Darcy Farrow." The reviews are right on the mark. Although
different from the first volume, this album has a good sound, and I like
hearing the different artists(though I would love to hear more of Nanci
in the lead). I wish ,however, on the song "Desperadoes....." they
would have identified the singers of the speciffic parts. Are they
listed in order of appearance on the song? I am not sure. I also
loved the photos on the front and back(the back was my favorite---the
front looked kinda awkward with Nanci's left arm looking out of
place...) . Can I be more picky? Anyway, two thumbs up! I have
alerted all known Nanci fans(MOm,, brother, ect) of Nanci's apperance on
Dave tonight. Can't wait!
