I totally agree with this...I had the privilege of working with the late
Geraldine Page at the Mirror Repertory Company in New York, and most people
did not know the precarious state of her health in the last couple years of
her life (from about "The Trip to Bountiful" on). She had a number of serious
conditions, and I watched as she kept up with teaching her acting classes each
week, with shooting various movie roles, and most importantly, taking the
stage as many times a week as she could. I recall her in Madwoman of Chaillot,
barely able to get up the stairs to the side of the stage, and then something
wonderful taking over and her seeming to draw the energy of the audience, and
give it back to us, and become an amazing, vibrant and marvelous
performer...and then leaving the stage again, and falling back into the
exhaustion of her illness. I think that the opportunity to perform, and do
what she loved, and be surrounded by her family (her children were devoted to
taking care of her) all kept this wonderful artist around with us much longer
than could have been medically expected. I know that Nanci will draw the
healing energy that all of us are sending her, and that our prayers/good
wishes/ and thoughts will make a positive difference.
Peace,
Kathleen W.

Wow...sorry to hear of Nanci's continuing health difficulties. Let us all
hope she does whatever is necessary to deal with it, even getting off the
road if that would help. I'm sure she is doing the right thing for herself,
but I do worry. Jerry Garcia woulda done a lot better for himself if he had
gotten off the touring treadmill...

I'm peeping out of my shell to say...
I just love that precious woman. (Whichever of you suggested sending our good
wishes across time & space and all that...I'm doing it! )
I don't recall the name of the Guy Clark CD I want to recommend, but it has
"The Randall Knife," "Better Days" (My favorite GC song), "Land O' Goshen" and
"Home-Grown Tomatoes," among others. Mine wore out long, long ago, but I'd
highly recommend it!
Wishing you all happy thoughts and good health,

p.s. Is there an address to write to Ms. Griffith and send her my best?
Please let me know. Thank you kindly.

Sorry, to tie up the NN with this trivial bit, but earlier this year a
Nancinetter asked me to keep a look out for a used copy of the Warm Front CD
by Billy Joe Walker, Jr.
I found one so please get back in touch....
Guess I'm going to have to wait longer between e-mail purges

Most of you call Nanci your personal hero and I am one of those as well.
I have been undergoing surgical and radiation treatments for breast cancer. It
was discovered the day Linda McCartney died of it and Nanci's music has been
actively involved in my approach to the treatment. In the biopsy procedures, I
was allowed to bring a CD (Flyer) to distract me and have had Nanci onhand in
spirit as well as the shiny rainbows of her voice on the discs through the
daily zaps with the big machine. You just have to do it, get through it, and
go on living.
Doing it is time consuming and I can see why she might not be available to
perform. In the thyroid area, I imagine it can affect the espohagus, so she
might not be eating as well and fighting fatigue on top of that.
I wish I could tell her personally that she has made this thing easier for
me. It was caught early and I am feeling fine on day 21 of 33 planned
treatments. Hope she is as well. My prayers will include her.

Subject: Billy, Woody, and Wilco (some NG content)
Hello all,
I just want to give big cheers for the Billy Bragg/Wilco adaptation of
Woody Guthrie songs--"Mermaid Avenue". The songs are amazing both
musically and lyrically. Natalie Merchant's solo vocals on one track are
heart-wrenching, but that's only one of many highlights of this album.
This has been professionally a bit of a rough patch for
me (for what it's worth, I work in the division of the Missouri public
defenders system which handles exclusively death penalty cases . . . ),
and for some reason I've been spending a lot of time with "Mermaid
Avenue," the Cowboy Junkies' "Miles From Our Home" and NG's "OVOR". ("The
finest hour I have seen . . . " is a lyric that's meaning much to me these
days.
Looking forward to the Chicago show next week,
Thom Bassett

I'd go with his first album, Old Number One. I still play the well-worn
vinyl I bought in the mid-70s. Not a dud on it.

You know, I've tried really hard *not* to like that CD. I'm a big Woody
G. fan and I usually don't like alt.country so I didn't like the thought
of these guys messing with his lyrics. But I gotta admit, it's good. I
especially like "Ain't Nobody Who Can Sing Like Me" and "California
Stars" and I appreciate the fact that they didn't try and sound like
Guthrie.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Greetings,
I finally got around to delurking to add my comments regarding OVT today =
when I received the the Digest from the 11th. Oh boy, after all the =
interesting commentary about the songs, the vocals and what was the =
point of the new CD I did'nt want to read Bob's post from the Globe. =
Cancer tends to put a lot of things in perspective. My close friend's =
wife is currently undergoing treatment and a friend from work just lost =
her Mom at a relatively early age. I'd like to write something that =
expresses what I feel, but I think Christina Myers said it better than I =
can tonight. I've come to enjoy this little bit of the Web that is the =
NNet - the comments, the recommendations for new artists, the insight =
and the personalities of the people who post. Nanci, her music and MF's =
efforts tie it together. I just hope that Nanci and her doctors can =
lick the cancer for good this time. I've got to believe that the live =
performances at Newport and the collaborations on OVT help.
Regarding the CD, it gets better with each listen. I've got to admit =
after all the stuff about the vocals, both here on the NNet and on the =
Folk Music newsgroup, I was a little apprehensive on the first listen. =
And I did find some of the vocals a bit distracting. But with each =
listen I like it more - especially tonight. I have always liked to sing =
along with songs, even if its in the car or other places where no one =
can hear. I can only assume that professionals enjoy singing with =
fellow artists and Nanci must have had a blast singing with her old =
chums and heros. Yarrington Town, Try the Love, Wings of a Dove, =
Streets of Baltimore, Dress of Laces and Desperados are highlights for =
me. Her work with Eric Taylor stands out. I picked up one of his CD's =
recently and really enjoy it - its the one with Deadwood, SD. Does he =
have any others out?
Like someone else mentioned I like that some of the writers sing on =
other songs and not their own as you might expect - although I thought =
that Richard Thompson and Nanci did a better version of Wall of Death on =
the Sessions show. Finally one of the first things that caught my eye =
was the photos in the liner notes. Other than the cover and back photos =
of Nanci and the small shot with Jim Rooney all the photos are of the =
writers. Great touch! Some time ago I saw on PBS a show about a =
Weavers reunion concert before Lee Hayes passed away. I knew very =
little about them, their music, the blacklist etc. I now own the =
Weavers box set and the recent Pete Seeger tribute. If I Had a Hammer =
is a great way to close OVT. Thanks Lee, Pete, Nanci & Friends.
Finally, when Nanci was on WFUV a week or so ago I tried to see if they =
broadcast over the Net. I didn't succeed. But I did find a list of the =
Top 50 Americana Albums as voted by FUV listeners in 1996. A pretty =
impressive list. The top 5 included Blood on the Tracks, Blue, American =
Beauty by the Dead, Big Pink by The Band and in the No. 5 position Other =
Voices, Other Rooms just ahead of Blonde on Blonde, Graceland, Wrecking =
Ball and Sweet Baby James. No other Nanci albums, but I would probably =
have a slightly different list.
Best wishes to all,
Tom

You should have seen Nanci in Saratoga on Sunday. She sang with
Jimie Dale Gilmore, Joan Baez, & Lyle Lovett, as well as doing her own
amazing set.
She seemed to be as happy as anytime that I've seen her. She did ,
However, break down during "Dress of Laces", with Lyle Lovett. I had
just chalked it up to the sadness of the song, until I got home on
Monday and read the post about the return of the cancer. I guess our
lady is as great an actress, as she is a writer & singer.
Eric Taylor has a new CD coming out on Aug. 18 . It is called
"Resurrect" and can be ordered form Bill Lavery at Village Records. He
also had one out years ago, but I'm sure it is out of print.
My music is my life; Nanci is my music
Keep her in your prayers

Dear Nanci Lovers,
Recently, Maggie G. Heenie granted me an interview that I would like to share
with you. Maggie is the "Mary Margaret" in Nanci's song, There's A Light
Beyond These Woods (Mary Margaret). Her interview provides not only a
historical perspective, but the very moving human drama presently unfolding in
her life.
