>I just got home from the Newport Folk Fest here in Charlotte, and from my
>seat, Nanci was fabulous! She sounded fantastic, looked "mahvelous", and

No need to add on to all this, but I must....

Kelly Sanderson and I left Black Mtn. about 11:30 am and followed each other
(when you're running off of music and coffee instead of sleep, you need a
good "buddy system" to make sure neither of you drifts off the road and off
a mountain) to the Charlotte pavilion. We shook our heads at the $7 parking
bit, but got over it when we realized that a chicken sandwich and glass of
tea totalled an astounding $8. Oh well. :)

Dar Williams opened the concert with a five song set:

What Do You Hear In These Sounds?
Are You Out There?
The Christians and the Pagans
As Cool As I Am
When I Was A Boy

They're not in order, and I probably left one or two out, but like I said,
no sleep. I was disappointed that there were approximately twelve people in
the entire audience for her, since no one had arrived yet. Caroline Mann
and I made enough noise to make up for it, I believe. :)

Lucinda Williams was third. I had not yet been exposed to her, so you
imagine the look of shock on my face when she came out and broke the sound
barrier with her awesome guitarist and bass and her strong, rough voice. It
was excellent!

Bela Fleck and Joan Baez both had good sets. John Hyatt cancelled, so they
each got extra time. Future Man is singing now.....

NANCI CONTENT: (lol)

Watching the BMO set up was cool, especially when Kelly spotted Frank
Christian, with his hair down and wearing a beret, setting up his guitar on
the stage. Nanci came out and got massive applause from the crowd. She
looked great in her (obligatory fashion report) black top and purple sweater
and white jeans. The bad part about sitting in the 2nd row is that you
can't see shoes. I think they were black sandals.

First thing, Nanci grabbed the microphone and said, "Some guy in the back
asked me who this last band on stage was (Joan B.), and I said, 'Gosh, I
don't know!,' and he said, 'Why are they taking so long?,' and I said (in
her best low drawl), 'Look, I'm not a sound person, just a singer!'"

I'm glad Blake took the set list. Thanks! :) Instead of telling her quiet,
charming, heart-warming stories before the songs, Nanci was full of attitude
and adamancy, telling it just like it is. It was an energized performance.
Darius Rucker joined her on GCH and he and Lyle Lovett both joined in on
IAHL. Bela Fleck played along on banjo to "Outbound Plane." The evening
ended with EVERYONE singing "If I Had a Hammer." Wow.

It was enough to keep me awake on the drive home.

Somebody please write me and let me know that Kelly Sanderson got to Raleigh
OK. She was tired!

Subject: It was HOT! :-D

Hi Everyone!

I will leave the "official" type of reviews to others that attended this
past weekends Neport Festival in Raleigh, NC. It was hot all the way
around, the weather and the music!! I am so grateful to my friend that
gave my husband and I such fantastic tickets under the roof!! I wouldn't
have survived it otherwise.

All the performers were full of energy and appeared to be truly enjoying
themselves. Nanci came out with Dar Williams and sang backup for Joan
Baez for one song.

Before Nanci's set, I look up at the stage and there is Frank Christian.
I met him several years ago with my friend (same one who gave me the
tickets) in England. I grabbed her and said "let's go say hi to Frank!"
Luckily we got right up to the stage and managed to get his attention.
He remembered us and said we should have called him before the show,
he would have given us passes to come on back! Jeeeesh, I could have
kicked myself. Oh well, it was nice to see him and chat for a little
while anyway. He is a really nice guy (and an extremely talented guitar
player for those of you that are not familiar with his work). He wrote
"Three Flights Up" which is on OVOR. He has written a childrens book
that is due out 01Sept98. Sorry...I can't remember the name. I will
get hold of Frank in the future to find out. That is a book that I want
to get for my baby!

Nanci's set was terrific! I was happy to see/hear her met with loud
cheers. She was in good spirits, her voice sounded very strong, and
she was bee-boppin' all over the place. Darius Rucker joined her for
"Gulf Coast Highway" (sounded much better then on BRFTM) and "Hard Life".
She invited anyone that was in the sidelines on stage for "If I had a
Hammer"(she made her political statements about Ken Starr etc before
she started). "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" was beautiful. She was
rocking with "Outbound Plane". I am so happy that I was able to see
her perform again and that she was doing so well.

Bye now!
Jeannie

Subject: Nanci in Charlotte

Hello Everyone:
Let me start by saying that I was saddened by the news of Nanci's
illness and have been deeply moved by her pledge to continue with her tour
dates. However, any worries about her condition were quickly dispelled when
she took the stage last night. Honestly Nanci gave the most invigorating
performance last night in Charlotte of any of the 5 concerts that I have been
to. I believe that the main reason was her friends that joined her on stage,
including Bela Fleck, Lyle Lovette, Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan of Hootie and
the Blowfish. The set list was as follows:
1. Speed of the sound of lonliness
2. Not my way home (which she referred to as her favorite song that she had
ever written.)
3. These Days in an Open Book
4. Where Does the Time Go
5. Outbound Plane (with Bela)
6. Three Flights Up (with Frank Christian who is touring with Nanci).
7. Gulf Coast Highway (with Darius Rucker)
8. It's a Hard Life (with Darius and Mark Bryan)
9. If I had a Hammer (Nanci gives one of the most fired up, political
introductions to any song I have ever heard. She talks about how this song
was originally blacklisted by Sen Joseph McCarthy during the "Red Scare"
years. She says that what McCarthy was doing then is no different than what
Ken Starr is doing now. She was joined by Rucker, Bryan, Bela and Lyle.)
I think that my favorite performance was during Lyle's set when he
brought out Nanci and gave her great credit for helping him break into the
business, and had her sing Dress of Laces with him. It was a very stirring
performance to top off a great concert. If last nights show is representative
of Nanci's vigor, I don't think that we have anything to worry about.

Subject: a few comments

Hi everyone,

I want to start off by saying how sorry I am to hear of Nanci's
continued struggles with health issues. I do hope that she will
beat this thing once and for all...soon!

My thoughts/feelings about OVT: I didn't like it the first time I
listened to it. I literally 'made' myself listen to it a few more
times over the weeks. It has grown on me for the most part. There
are a few gems on this CD like all of Nanci's work. I still can't
sit and listen to "Wall of Death"...dont' think I ever will. Except
if she plays it this weekend in concert. I do enjoy all songs when
they're 'live'. My favorites so far are Dress of Laces, He was a
Friend of Mine, You were on my mind (I get a kick out of her playing
with words), Try the Love.

I'm an extremely 'visual' person. I enjoyed Nanci's music before I
saw her perform but, after my first concert I was really hooked. Her
energy and spirit adds so much to the songs for me. I can still 'feel'
the emotions with "Love at the Five and Dime", I still chuckle when
I hear "This Heart" because she was so annimated when singing it (smirking
and rolling her eyes in a playful way) it was priceless! I remember
being stopped in my tracks when she sang "The Road to Aberdeen", you
could have heard a pin drop at that venue, and you felt like you could
see her interaction with the pilot when she sang "Flyer". So when I
hear any of those tunes or any of her songs off of a new album, I 'see'
her performing them and I smile.

When I saw the Blue Roses tour last year, I went not being too thrilled
with many of the Nanci/Cricket songs. I did however, enjoy them in
concert. She was wild and full of energy...it was contagious! I could
go on and on but I'd make your eyes cross out of boredom! This is
why I rarely post! ;-)

I'm looking forward to the Newport Festival this weekend! I plan on
taking this very pregnant body out there and toughing it out! Hey,
maybe it will make the baby come a few weeks early!! :-D I have been
playing Nanci CDs for the baby! They are also part of my Lamaze bag!!

Take care everyone! Jeannie

Subject: Miscellaneous thuoghts on OVToo

Random OVToo-related thoughts of the past week:

(A) As I recently popped one of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the
Circle Be Unbroken" albums into my CD player, it dawned on me that
Nanci's "Other Voices" CDs are in the same genre: not so much the "star"
of the show, as we are used to, but playing "director" for a change,
telling us a story of where the music came from. Look at these as if
they were in a sense a different group or artist.

(B) What artists other than John Prine and Emmylou Harris appeared on
both one of Nanci's "Other Voices" albums and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" albums?

(C) So, if you don't like all the cuts on OVToo... try this. Take your
favorite songs off of OVOR, and your favorite songs off of OVToo... and
put them together on one tape... WOW! What an album the "Best of Other
Voices" is when you create it that way!

(D) If I remember right, OVToo debuted at #81 on the Billboard Top 200
albums chart on the week it was released, and fell out of the Top 100
the following week.

Subject: OV Too and Bobby Z

Hello all,

I (finally!) was able to get a copy of OV Too, and I listened to it about
four times last night. All in all, I like it very much (although there
were a couple of cuts that didn't do a whole lot for me--hope I don't
offend anyone by saying that "Wings of a Dove" was one of them). I was
really interested in hearing NG's accent(s) and pronounciation, given the
discussion they have generated here lately. While certain words were
certainly noticeable for their pronounciation(is it "mahnin'"?), nothing
bothered me. 'Course, I like Dylan's music as much as I like anyone's, so
what do I know about such things . . .

Speaking of Bob, I'm wondering what others think about NG et al.'s and
Dylan's respective covers of "Hard Times Come Again No More" (Bob's is on
his 1992 all-acoustic release, "Good As I Been To You"). I have to
confess I like Dylan's version better: the spare, weary, almost pained
interpretation just seems to fit the lyrics better. I don't know, maybe I
think this way simply because I've been lsitening to the Dylan version for
years.

Seekers After Information,

With positive encouragement flying at me from all sides, I have no option
but to put together another survey. However, this week at work I became
aware of an impending deadline of doom which I must not miss; therefore I
will not have the time to devote to a survey until some time in September
at least. Sorry for the false alarm. (If Alcoa knew how much of the
earlier surveys they underwrote, I'd be asking you all if "you want fries
with that?")

Please continue with your suggestions for questions. Thanks to Blake,

Subject: Re: Cory Sipper [no nanci content]

Hi, Ed Maier and fellow Nancinetters.

I found an old e-mail in my inbox which mentions Cory Sipper,
whom I really love a lot. I just went to her CD release party
in Santa Barbara, CA. I had to drive two hours to get there,
but it was worth it. She's played Los Angeles solo a couple
times, but at her home town she had her band with her.
Anyways, since you like Cory, Ed, I thought you'd like to know
that her new album, ORBITER, is available through her website
and she's also trying to scrape the money together to issue a
compilation CD of some songs from her two older cassettes.
Cory is a real gem. If you get a chance, write to her and give
her your thumbs up. She's a real nice person, and I'm sure she
would appreciate your response. For me, Cory was like Nanci:
as soon as I heard her, I loved her. Both Swimology and Orbiter
have a nice range in musical intensity.

Bye...
