Tickets are now on sale for Nanci's appearance at The Victoria Hall Stoke on
Trent, Tuesday December 1st.
The number to call is 01782 213800 for the theatre box office or 0870 9080888
if you want to use Ticketmaster.
The last time I was in Stoke was to see Manchester City before they finally
stumbled into Div 2.
Ah well, we're now on our way back and hopefully Nanci will be delivering a
premiership performance even if it is Stoke on Trent.

Here's to Nanci and football (that's soccer to you Nancinutters on the wrong

Subject: Nanci's Book

Oh joyous day! The mailman came down the street late this afternoon and
stopped before reaching the mailbox. Hmmm, must be a package but I'm not
expecting anything am I. I go to greet him and he hands me a soft,
oversized envelope. And it dawns on me... ahh, the Nanci shirt I ordered
way back when... I guess the books haven't been signed yet and they'll be
coming soon.
Lucky it's my day off so the mailman doesn't have to try and cram the
package into the box. I'm in the middle of repainting our garage door and
trim and fortunately close to the end of the project. After finishing and
cleaning up, I head inside and open the package... out slides a wonderful
T-shirt and then... and THEN! Plop, out drops the book that had been
wrapped up in the shirt. IT'S HERE! Sure enough, a signature in red pen
inside invites me to "Sing Out". Just enough time before dinner for a quick
glance at all the photos and captions.
This evening I sit down and start reading through the book. All I can
say at the moment is what a great treat. Remember when albums had super
packaging and other niceties? I think Nanci has given us the ultimate
packaging for the Other Voices albums. Here are the liner notes we always
yearned for... the stories and details that can't help but magnify our
appreciation of the songs. Nanci, thank yew kindly for such a gift to cherish.

Subject: Nice to be a part of this list

I have been a member of this list nearly since its inception--been a major
lurker in recent years, though--and just wanted to comment on how great it is
that everyone here can feel free to share their opinions, no matter what they
are, in a mature, responsible way. The reason I bring this up, is that I
recently inquired about joining another mailing list for a musical artist who
will remain nameless. But when I sent in my subscription e-mail, I received in
return a lengthy questionnaire, in which the answers would determine my
"worthiness" for being a member. I was offended. This, to me, flies in the
face of what the Internet stands for: the free exchange of ideas between
people from all walks of life. The people running this particular list
apparently don't want anyone who's opinions differ from their own being a part
of their little community. I told them to they can have their little tea
party--I would get my information on this artist from other sources. So,
thanks Mark for keeping this little corner of the Internet free and open to
everyone.

Has anyone heard of some event scheduled for next Saturday in the SF Bay area
with Nanci, Beausoleil, several other names? I caught the tail end of the
announcement on KPFA yesterday and wanted to see what's up. They said the
Concord Pavilian, wherever that is.

Last time I almost made the trip up from Fresno, it was to see Christine
Lavin, who ended up cancelling because of tonsils. So... I want to me sure
this is legit!

Hi folks -

Just looking through the new Radio Times (for those overseas, the BBC's UK
tv/radio listings magazine) and noticed a special programme which kicks off
BBC Radio 2's Country Week.

It's on this Saturday, 19 September, 3.30-5.30pm - Johnnie Walker presents
his show live from Nashville with special guest... Nanci!

Weather and time check - it's 8.55am in London on a wet and overcast Tuesday
morning. The BT Tower which I can normally see out of my office window has
virtually disappeared.

Best wishes to all,
Graham

Subject: nanci and depression

Hello fellow Nanci admirers. This is my first posting in years, i =
believe. I've delurked to help clarify, hopefully, what link there may =
be between creativity and depression. I'm neither depressed nor =
creative, but as a psychiatrist, I have had several of my patients tell =
me that they were more creative when depressed. They often tell me that =
the creative fire or intensity is diminished, and that their work =
(regardless of the medium) is less passionate, in some ways. However, =
sometimes treatment of depression has the opposite effect. Since =
clinical depression often adversely affects concentration and energy, the =
creative spark returns upon treatment. Proving a relationship between =
creativity and clinical depressions is scientifically difficult. This =
would infer that we have a universal measuring stick for judging =
artistic quality, which of course there is none.=20

If anybody is interested in finding out more about mental illness and =
artistic ability, you may want to read "Touched by Fire," a book by K. =
Redfield Jamison (unsure of spelling). In this book Dr. Jamison makes =
the case that several great artists were affected by bipolar disorder =
(aka manic depression), and that the disorder greatly impacted their =
work. =20

By the way, I believe that "Last of the true Believers" is a musical =
version of Prozac.

Hi all!

Anyone heard anything about whether Nanci will definitely be at the
Newport Folk Festival in Los Angeles this weekend? I'm trying not to
get my hopes up too high in case she has to cancel, but I'm really
looking forward to it. I'm heading down to LA for a high school
reunion, and I'm going to the Festival with my dad, who just started
listening to Nanci a couple of years ago and has never seen her before.
The Festival should be good no matter what (especially since I'll get to
spend some time with my dad which doesn't happen as often as it should),
but I really REally REALLY want to see Nanci live again!

Thanks, Val "still workin' on that ole thesis on corners" Graber

I guess everyone must be busy READING Nanci's book...
I can't imagine folks on this list remaining quiet if they've finished
absorbing over 200 pages of Nanci's comments about her music and both Other
Voices albums. It certainly has me re-evaluating the songs on OV2 in light
of the background and motivation behind each song.

Could it be, Mike, that we've finally learned to think about stuff a
little while insteading of rushing 1) to judgment and 2) into print--or
its email equivalent?

It's an amazing book and maybe as close as Nanci will ever come to an
autobiography. I think it's a rbave book in many ways.
