Subject: Nanci in Los Angeles

Hi all!
Just wanted to put in my two cents about Nanci's performance in Los
Angeles (at the Newport Folk Festival) Sunday Sept. 20.

To sum -- she was great! This was my fourth time seeing her live, and
she looked and sounded wonderful. She was very perky and cheerful and
her voice was beautiful. I was happy to be in the 6th row where I had a
great view of everyone on stage. Her set list was the same as in San
Francisco, and she also joined in again with Joan Baez on "Don't Think
Twice It's Alright". My only complaint was that she didn't play for
long enough, but the time constraints were pretty severe for all the
artists.

The rest of the concert was wonderful too. Beausoleil, Richard
Thompson, Bruce Cockburn, John Hiatt, Marc Cohn, Joan Baez, and Bela
Fleck and the Flecktones were all great live. The only artists I didn't
really enjoy were Marc Eitzel, whose singing I didn't care for, and
Wilco, whose songs I liked, but couldn't understand the words.
Altogether, it was the best concert I've ever seen. It was also a
wonderful day for me because I got to spend it with my dad who I don't
get to see much (he lives in LA, I live near Seattle), and because he
really enjoyed the show too. It was his first time seeing Nanci
performing - I think he's addicted now!

Subject: Nanci and James Hooker

I read that Nanci is semi-retiring from making CD's and tours to work on less
strenuous projects, for health reasons.

I also read that James Hooker will be part of the reassembing Amazing Rhythm
Aces.

Where does that leave the long-time wonderful collaboration of the two
artists? Will they still work together in a limited number of shows?

On an unrelated topic, I'd like to share my opinion that two other female
country or crossover singer/songwriters are as brilliant as Nanci: namely,
Matraca Berg and Beth Nielsen Chapman. They have good WEB sites, listed
below:

Subject: Eric Taylor in Concert

Last night I got to help Eric Taylor celebrate his birthday. Well, he
might describe it differently... I attended my first House COncert here
in Columbia, SC. About 20 of us gathered in the lovely living room of
Jimmy Riddle to hear some wonderful songs from Denice Franke and Eric
Taylor, separately and collectively.

Taylor mentioned his NY appearance with Lyle and said if you haven't heard
of Steve Fromholz yet you probably would.

I wasn't really familair with taylor's music before this concert. But I'm
a fan now-excelllent songwriting, vivid stories and characters. Several
songs used wings or birds as metaphors...hmmmmmm. And he told great
stories in-between his songs. It was a great way to spend an evening and
meet new people with good taste in music.

Taylor's new album is called Resurrect and Franke's new album was produced
by Taylor. Taylor and Franke left Columbia for gigs in Greenville,
Sparatnburg and Atlanta on Saturday.

And Jillian (now 6 months old) sat through it all with rapt attention. I
am confident that immersion into folk at an early age will do good.

Subject: Lyle/Texans Wow New York (No NG...well, just a mention)

As some of you may know Lyle Lovett's new CD is out and the release was
done over two nights at The Bottom Line in New York City. Reports are
trickling in but I gather both shows were brilliant and our Texas
friends made quite a splash.

Both shows were songwriter-in the-round format. The first night was
Lyle, Steven Fromholz, Robert Earl Keene, Michael Martin Murphy and Eric
Taylor. The second night Lyle, Steven Fromholz, Guy Clark, Vince Bell
and Willis Alan Ramsey.

(Minimal Nanci content is that Sun&Moon;&Stars; and Woman of the Phoenix
were played!)

>From what I am reading everyone, with no exceptions, was wonderful and
Fromholz was a huge success both for his songs and his showmanship.
Glad to hear that, as he deserves it (IMHO naturally!). There are four
Townes Van Zandt songs on the CD and great honor/tribute was given to
him, and to Walter Hyatt.

I do like the CD, by the way...I think Lyle really does "honor" these
writers that he has chosen. Read a review that didn't like a too
perfect kind of production. To me though it works. He isn't trying to
duplicate the original, yet he isn't stepping on each song by a hard
personal interp. I think you can hear the "love."

Just wish I could have been there!

...first off, I believe a standing ovation and Thank Yew is due to Mr.
Ferguson.

and Mr. Kimbro sed:

((Around these parts, nobody talks badly about Dolly. >> And round my house
nobody does either...I LOVED her "Treasures" album, with her unique takes on
pop and rock songs. And my sister, who works for a record company and doesn't
like ANYONE, raves over how sweet and nice she is.

...however publishers can be pita's. I long ago requested, in the proper
fashion, a copy of Nanci's book, to review it for a publication or two, and
have yet to receive a copy, even now that it is in stores. (On the other hand,
Warner Books got me a copy of Grace Slick's autobio PRONTO). (I am hoping to
do a piece on recent autobios/memoirs, including Nanci's, Grace Slick's, Judy
Collins's, and Darlene Love's.)

...oh and shameless self promo, my (much truncated) review of OV2 is in the
current ROCKRGRL magazine, along with reviews of Lucinda Williams's Car Wheels
on a Gravel Road and the Kate Wolf tribute, Treasures Left Behind.

Cheers,

Kathleen W.

I just want to say that if it weren't for Mark Ferguson's hard work and
dedication in setting up and running this little corner of the cyber
world, I would not have learned of artists that I now cherish, I would
not have climbed mountains to cherished panoramas, and I would not have
met people whom I now consider to be my closest friends. For that Mark, I
am enormously grateful. Thank you and good luck.

I'm 3/4ths the way through this new two CD set by Lyle Lovett. Run, don't
walk to your favorite music store. He covers Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt,
Eric Taylor, Walter Hyatt, Dave Rodriguez, Robert Earl Keen, and a bunch
of others. This is good stuff.
