HI all!
OK, with all our variations of "It sounds like she's singing..." on this
song I thought it was tine to actually write out the lyrics to the chorus as
we NNers heard it. So, here we go...
And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall these wounds can heal
They'll never take our native soil
But if we sell that neutron deer [or neutron beer]
And then we work these crops with sweat and tiaras
You'll be the mule, I'll be the cow
Come market time we'll work it out
There's still a lot of love
Right here in these troubled fields
Less profoundly meaningful, but funny as anything...

For a long time I heard 'the ritalin gots my hands through the radio' in
Listen to Radio and I thought that was a strange lyric.
And also, from It's Too Late (LNGH), where Nanci sings 'I'm not good at
being needed', I heard 'I'm going to be an idiot.'
Thought I'd share.

Hi there,
I'd like to make a concert recommendation. If Richard Thompson comes to
your town on his recent tour, go see him! It's the best concert I've
seen in long, long time. Truely amazing.
Also, my vote for folks that Nanci Griffith might do a duet with-
Loretta Lynn.

Robert do you play piano?? I think the divide on this one (as a
wannabe maestro myself) will be between those who don't play at all
and those who want to be so much better. This song captures
brilliantly the want to be able to bash out a decent tune and the
admiration that a lesser pianist has for those whose hands can cross
the ivories from 6 until nine without making a mistake.

Dan, I opted to NOT go to the Stanford thing since there were so many
performers I just know that Nanci will be limited to 10-15 minutes at the
most. I just can't stand short shows by her after the Villa Montalvo
thing. Also, it's been my experience that with these multi performer
shows, some just don't show due to illness or whatever. With MY luck, I'd
get there and they'd announce that Nanci wasn't showing
Regarding performance times, I saw Jeff Beck in Vegas last Saturday and he
played solid from 9:30 till 11:10! That's what I call a perfect length.
Still not as long as Jerry Jeff one time about 15 years ago - he never did
stop if I remember right - I think they had to wheel him out of the club
to the hotel room while he was still singing (g>.

Dan,
My tickets arrived a few weeks ago. Balcony Center, Row G. Please email me
privately so we can compare. Its going to be a binoculars night.
The season ticket holders get first pick on the seats, so that explains at
least part of it. I for one am looking forward to EmmyLou and Bruce
Cockburn, neither of whom I have ever seen in person before.
Patty Griffin is scheduled, too, so I hope Doug Lancio can be persuaded to
play with the BMO, just like old times.
By the way, I have twice caught the tail end of Leno/Letterman, and noticed
this tough/punk looking guitarist, done a double-take, and realized it's
Doug! He was wearing this weird thing on his head that looks alot like the
weird thing that Nanci's wearing on page 4 of the DBS liner notes. Hey!
Doug is wearing that weird thing on his head in the picture on page 2.
Makes me wonder about what goes on at those photo shoots!

I'll be in LA from November 4 - 8, and was hoping I could possibly see Nanci
there (she doesn't swing to Michigan much at all)....(you never know when you
might get lucky....) no dice, though. However, from what I understand, my
friend got tickets to see the Indigos in Los Angeles...(big grin) so I will
happily go! Can't wait!
>From my perspective, this has been a very good year for new music (and
previously recorded music, addressed in symphony) released by cherished
artists. Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, Emily Lou and Linda, Nanci, the
Indigo Girls, and the soon to be released Don Henley CD. Not to mention the
local artists I know, who create great stuff (just not marketed).
The Indigo Girls' "Come On Now Social" is REALLY good. Check it out, if you
like their rich harmonies and intelligent social commentaries. It's a little
more "edgy" than what you might expect, but quite fresh and moving. However,
this is not the spot for a review, and I won't say anything more.
Regarding DBS, I'm still listenin' and lovin' it. I'm trying to get my heart
around "1937 Pre-War Kimball...." Lyrically, it's a bit more straight
forward than what I'm used to from Nanci. I keep looking for sweet
subterfuge, a lover's denial, a "stop the world" metaphor, that I can sink
my heart into, but I don't find it there. That's a good thing, I think. I
kind of like the song. The profundity of the piano is there, for all to see.
If wishes were changes, I wish life were like that. It ain't. We take what
we perceive and weave it into what we believe to be true. Causes all kinds
of consternation. But sometimes, we just have to look at "what is" as "what
is" ... and Nanci has done that in this song. Cool.

We got crummy seats for this show too (Orchestra Left, ROW V), but I'm still
really looking forward to it. And unless Nanci is really sick, she will be
there. That info comes from a reliable source.
On a different subject, I've really enjoyed reading everyone's opinions on

The duet thought keeps haunting me....was Fogelberg on the original list? If
not, I really screwed up. I think they would be simply wonderful together.
Early, original Fogelberg meets early, original Griffith...quite sweet and
earthy and smart. Maybe singing "Stars?" or "To The Morning...." Or
perhaps Dan as the backstreet driver with the American. Dan would even be
an excellent back up on "These Days..." Hmmmm.....
Still would love to hear more Nanci and Indigo Girls. The harmonies on
"These Days..." *(of course, Nanci's harmony on Dan's "These Days" would be
quite cool) send me, and I sing it that way with my hippie musician friends
at our totally special jamborees (my ex-husband refers to our parties as
hootenannies) every time I get the chance. We have a big one tomorrow
night...can't wait to sing.
Y'all...I am SO BLESSED. I lead a simple life, I have friends I've known
for 25 years to sing and party with, I have a great career and a lovely
daughter. "I was a child of the 60's, when dreams could be held on tv..."
And all I want to do is sing and write words.
Nanci's influence propels me in that direction....

In accordance with the abstract and opposing nature of my personality at times
(I am a gemini)I offer these suggestions- giving a spin on a old line- of Duets
Nanci SHOULD NOT DO.
Nanci & Robert Plant
(although she could get down with her bad
ass self a la Tori Amos)
Nanci & Mariah Carey
(who'd be able to hear little ol'Nance?
over all that screeching)
Nanci & Ricky Martin
(the end project of this union would probably
make small children run for the hills)
Nanci & Celine Dion
(see Mariah comment above with added thought-
Nanci would never get a chance to actually
sing)
Nanci & Hootie and the Blowfish
(oh wait. this one already happened.)
Nanci & Trent Reznor
(Nanci all clad in black leather
does not a pretty picture make)
and the final Duet From Hell:
Nanci & the Dave Matthews Band
(okay- I may be alone in this- but Dave Matthews
sends me screaming to the hills! If I hear "Crash"
or any other annoying, repetitive song of theirs
one more time I may physically, spiritually
and mentally become ILL.BLAH)
ahem.
A postscript to above nonsense:
If these shadows have offended, think but this,
and all is mended: that you have but slumbered here,
while these visions did appear, and this
weak and idle theme- no more yielding than a dream.
(I think Will Shakespeare wrote that)
All done in good fun, my friends. :)

This duet could have surprising results. Sandy Denny did one or some song
with Led Zeppelin and the results quiet different than I expected.
And is the duet Nanci with Julio Iglezias passed thsi contest?
The duet from him with Willie surprised me too, so why don't let we Nanci
not surprise us.

OK, time for another stupid overinterpretation by Tracy. I really don't
know if this has ANYTHING at all to it, but I kind of think that when she
mentions "From A Distance" right at teh begining like that (and credits it
to Julie, not Bette) she's putting in the sentiment of that song, making
people thik about what IT says and ITS message, which there's no doubt in my
mind is really powerful, etc. The same thing may be true for the other
artists she mentions; that is their work may make points that she's trying
to make people go back and listen to their songs and find out.
OK, everybody flame me for being dumb.

Hi
I just love Kimball ... its catchy ..... I liked hearing the tributes Nanci
pays to other artistes ... and the touches of humour too. I just hope we
are not going to get into overly analytical mode on a sweet attractive
song.
I note that Squire Pugsley was not smitten by this track and you may find
my comments odd coming from another Brit. What you got to remember folks is
that RP is ENGLISH .......... stiff upper lip, cucumber sandwiches, pip pip
old fruit, tally-ho and anyone for tennis and all that.
We Scots are not so cold blooded ...... but are more inclined to wear our
hearts on our sleeves and identify with the artistes emotions. So, as we

Dear Netters,
First of all--I hate duets. But Nanci already has
the perfect duet people in the BMO. James Hooker--who
of course does the duets in concert and Lee
Satterfield. I would love to hear them do a duet on a
future album.
By the way, at the only Nanci concert I attended Lee
was lead singer on one of her own songs and was great.
Is Nanci still having her do that?
Someone mentioned the late Karen Carpenter--I happened
to hear an old Carpenter's song the other day--I never
realized what a fantastic voice she had. Too bad 90%
her material was so bad (although I did like "Super
Star").

I think, considering it's time in music history, the music of the Carpenter's
was not too bad. There was a lot of corny stuff floating around in the 70's.
I still get in a "mood" now and then and have to listen to it for a few
days...or weeks. Our choir teacher was obsessed with Karen's voice and
always reminded us to try and achieve that purity and richness of sound. It
worked---no matter how hard I want to sound "cool" or hard-edged, I still
sing like Karen Carpenter!
