Hi All
(it's hard life, it's a hard life it's a very hard life...>
I've overcome the no-DBS-on-the-puter obstacle: we have one of those CD players
that plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car, so I have it in here with an
AC adaptor and headphones. And let me add that you haven't heard the Trouble
in the Fields overture until you've heard it through headphones. I'm sure the
Not My Home overture will have me reeling, too.
Anyway, on the misheard lyrics thread...
I didn't know it was a nun in "On Grafton Street" until...oh, age 14, at least
(I'm 16, now) I'd always thought she said "and a young man offers me a
chair..." But then the "and I feel compelled to tell HER of the sisters that
we knew" line didn't make much sense.
We got The MCA Years when I was 9, and for years I never, ever, knew the name
of that song I liked. All I knew was the first line, and that is what I
identified it by until I got to like Nanci enough to check out that liner:
She's the salt of the earth
straight from the bosom of the boring church
with a voice like a mime
a-crusin' along with her forty-all-on-the-line.
These days my life is an open book
missing pages I cannot seem to bind
Oh, god... that cello overture.... if I ever that get good I will have attained
nirvana.... and down to low C.... ommmmmmmmm...... I could marry John
Catchings.
And on the duets thread... hmm....
Dylan
HOOKER : ) (if you're out there, Mr. Hookman, I'm one of those starry-eyed
teenagers who wrote you that letter...)
Adam Duritz.
Indigo Girls...
Kate Campbell
Odetta (okay, maybe not a duet...)

I thought that too!! dunno what i thought it meant, but...i was young..

'I need someone who could touch me

but tha wasn't such a weird mistake.

Subject: NN: Misheard lyrics, half empty CD's and STILL NO London RAH info.
Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 22:32:54 +0100
From: "Pollock, Stuart (S.J.)" (spolloc2@ford.com>
Greetings NN'ers
Well not exactly half empty CD's but close enough. Having eventually figured
out that DBS has 53:22 minutes of actual playing time (one of my PC CD
players reported this CD was over 6 HOURS long, guess Elektra managed to
mess things up a bit with the Macromedia thingy and my home boom box still
wont play it).
I want to know what they did with the other 20 minutes of music.
Considering that I am unlikely to get an answer to this, my question to
youse folks is; What 4 or 5 tracks are missing, what songs could have been
"dusted" off and included ?
On the misheard lyrics theme, from The Wing and The Wheel (track 2 side
1...oops vinyl flashback) I hear the following...
from the back streets of old south austin
from the dust bowl of my crickets
from the "streets of wanda fuelcock" instead of from the Straits of
Juan De Fuca
all the way to china
OK so I had to read the lyrics to discover what was actually being sung but
boy would I like to know where in the world wanda fuelcock could be located.
I know that fancy the look of the Juan De Fuca area of Vancouver Island.
Albert Hall still unaware of the dates but having spent a whole £7.50 to get
on their mailing list (and getting a "special" phone number) I don't mind
annoying them daily (so far they don't seem to mind taking the phone calls).
Does anybody have any idea who might be promoting the concerts? Perhaps
they'd be a bit forthcoming with the dates.
regards
Stuart

I'd like to hear a Nanci/Collin Raye duet--blend of two wonderful voices. Or
with Vince Gill too.
I'd also like to hear her sing with Matraca Berg, and more with Beth Nielsen
Chapman--maybe songwriting collaborations of three great singer/songwriters.
Best wishes,

Subject: NN: Kate Rusby again

From: Tony Bloomfield (tonyb@reading.u-net.com>
Yes, I'm still alive...
Back before the release of DBS, there was quite a bit of positive talk on
this list about English folkie Kate Rusby. Fans might like to know that one
of her earlier efforts has just been re-released (or maybe just become more
readily available).
It's an album called "Intuition", featuring six ladies from Yorkshire going
by the inimitable name of "Deighton, Deighton, Matthews, Roberts, Rusby and
Shaw". I believe they later changed their name to Equation - can't say I'm
surprised! But then again, since the album is mostly a collection of solos
and duets rather than group singing, perhaps it's not so daft.
Anyhow, the Nanci connection is that Kate does a wonderful solo version of
"Gulf Coast Highway". (And in deference to our honoured member, it is of
course a 'Hooker Connection' too!)
Also on the disc are Mary Chapin's "Moon and St. Christopher" and Tracy
Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You". The rest (14 tracks, 51 minutes in all) is
mostly traditional English folk, or more contemporary songs written by
Julie Matthews. If you like this sort of music, and the sound of the female
voice uncluttered by too much orchestration, then you'd probably like this
disc.
If you're interested, go to http://www.folkmusic.net/listeningpost and
follow the 'Special Offers' link. The site is still under construction so
you may have to wait a while before things like audio clips become available.
Back to lurking for another year; well maybe till Nanci comes to these
shores again.
TonyB.

Hi! everyone,
The Dust Bowl Symphony & the Other Voices video are terriffic! I've been a
lurker (I once was on a "PERC Lurkers" softball team-as a law intern-it
rhymes, see?) for too long; kudos! to Nanci for her recent releases!! I've
been reading the Nancinet postings, and I have a couple of points:
I used to scoff at Darius Rucker, too, until I saw them jam at the New
Orleans Jazz Fest last May! They (Hootie band) had "big chops" and rocked!
Sure, Darius and band were overcommercialized ( we Nanci fans despise this,
prefering the "path least travelled"). Really though, Darius has a nice
baritone(?) voice; besides, they protested that "redneck flag", so they're
for social justice, too.
Second, thanks to Mark, Bill, and the contributors, the Nancinet provides
fascinating insight into Nanci's music and life; also, it's cool to read
correspondence from fans in the "old country", across "the pond". It's so
easy to stereotype: I thought the Armadillo in Glascow was some quaint club;
then I see on the video it's a huge venue reminiscent of the Sydney Opera
House!
Looking for rain in Tallahassee,

Thanks for the thoughts for those caught up in the rail horror here in
West London. The full extent of this catastrophe will only come out over
the coming days and some of the victims may never be identified. The
front carriage burned out at a temperature of 1,000 degrees centigrade.
It is going to be impossible to even tell how many were in that section
of the train.

Just to let any cello players out there know... I took DBS in to a cello
lesson, and was gushing about the overture to Not My Way Home to my teacher.
He very kandly offered to help me figure it out! And he did. So if there's
anyone out there (and I know there is one!) interested in knowin' how to play
the overture... drop me a line! (Oh, one note... I'm very amateur at this...
I've been a flute player most of my life, and I can't read G-clef. Therefore, I
can only give strings and how many fingers to use per string, rather than
notes! Sorry!)

Well, for starters, Jay is about a million times more gracious than
Letterman, isn't he?
I'm so excited about the performance tonight! I was COMPLETELY wrong about
the song I thought they'd do, and I was so delighted with her choice! She
looked and sounded fabulous. Did you notice those beautiful silver strands
of hair that caught the light, particularly on the side views? I've never
noticed those before. Darius, I'm sorry to say, still sings flat. Ouch! He
makes me squirm. His performance was not offensive, and he sang the song in
a straightforward manner, but he is simply not the best duet partner for
Nanci. Credit where it's due, though---he likes Nanci, so he obviously has
good taste. Seems like a nice guy, too. Hey! She got to go sit and say a
few words too! (ok, very few, but at least we still got to see her after the
commercial break!) James Hooker, thanks for the tip--I enjoyed the
performance immensely! By the way, you sure are a serious-looking fellow,
but I so delighted to hear those tinkling trademark notes on "Tell Me How"....

Griffsters--
In the wake of what I thought was a pretty nice appearance on the Tonight
Show, I see in my TV listings this morning that a "Nancy Griffith" is
scheduled to appear on "Politically Incorrect" tonight. PI is taped in Los
Angeles, just like the Tonight Show, so I'm just assuming. . . . If you've
never seen PI, though, be sure not to expect music. It's a talk show in
which the host, comedian Bill Maher, "leads" a quartet of celebrities in a
discussion of current social and political events. More often than not, one
particular celeb tends to be a loud-mouthed blowhard who dominates the
conversation, and it's usually the person I agree the least with. Suffice it
to say that though I like the concept of the show, and it can be hilarious,
I find it generally unsatisfying and don't tend to watch it much. Plus it's
on late. But I'll check it out tonight. And hey, gee whiz, here in America
we don't get to see celebrities very often, especially celebrities spouting
opinions on issues about which they are often poorly informed, so heck, I
shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. (I tend to agree with Nanci on
issues, however, and believe her to be well informed.)

I thought that Nanci and Darius sang well. It was a really bright and upbeat
performance and they even got to speak a little bit.
Did anyone else catch it?
And thanks to whomever alerted us to that wonderful barnesandnoble.com chat
the other night. What fun! I recognized some NanciNetters among the
questioners, and Nanci answered two of my questions. I loved her directness
and humor and grace which showed in her writing style, even that sort of
on-line spontaneous writing reflects her well.
I imagine there's a way to see a transcript of the chat by going to the
barnesandnoble website. It would be fun to see the whole thing printed out,
and there's an interview with Nanci on their site as well.

Nanci will be on "Politically Incorrect" tonight (about midnight on
your ABC stations).
I'm worried it's a mistake on her part. This show is usually an
exercise in overblown egos and bombast, almost like a baby boomer stye
McGlaughlin Group with people like Sandra Bernhardt and Will Durst.
Participants who aren't used to the rapid scattershot format and who
aren't adept at thinking fast on their feet can look real bad. On the
other hand, Nanci has demonstrated a definite intelligent, probing
intellect. It's mainly a question of how fast it'll flow in a rapid
sound bite atmosphere.
Here's hoping our hero knocks em dead.
