Not to be picky, but it's spelled Don McLean, in case someone looks for
his greatest hits CD. (g>

I just saw a repeat of the Garth Brooks' Central Park concert from last
year, and he had Don McLean come out and sing "American Pie" with him.
What do you think he and Nanci will play/sing together? Tell Me How?

Don McLean taught me to play guitar. I can hear he and Nanci dueting
nicely on "Empty Chairs" a song reminecent of "Tecumseh Valley" in
style and flow and even content. "Castles in the Air" is something
maybe more recognizable to most that I think would also suit them
both. Of course "Vincent" is very well known, perhaps over-done, but
I can hear Nanci's sweet voice there as well.

McLean also has a more "traditional" album with favorites like "Mule
Skinner Blues", "Fool's Paradise", and "Love oh Love".

Actually, I heard a bit about this on Austin radio the other day, but
didn't post it because I don't know many details. Nanci and Don
McClean *are* doing a benefit for Austin City Limits at the Paramount
Theater in Austin. It's in November, but I missed the date. It is not
an ACL taping, though ACL will film it. The radio guy made it sound
like tickets were already available, but like I said, I kinda missed
the meat. If anyone in Austin knows more, jump on in.

Reading our listmeister Bill Pages' post about Nanci going on the road
acoustically this spring made me think she is going to be very busy. She
is in the throes of confirming her 'orchestra' dates here in the UK, with
the London Symphony, at the Royal Albert Hall, in May. Perhaps, like her
final tour chat of a couple of years back, it was just another throw away
remark!!!

Hi.
Don't mean to clog up the Nanci Net with such a request but I've been
hearing about all of these television appearances Nanci has been making
and have been unable to catch them....
The one I knew about, the David Letterman appearance, I tried to record
but was unsuccessful. The classic tape running out right at the very
moment they show what I want to see. Nanci saying "cha, cha, cha was all
I got. *sigh*

Can anyone help a girl out?

Tonight inside a hot and steamy London club, The Borderline, Stacey Earle
put on a performance of great exuberance, no little emotion and proved
herself to be a star of the future. Her on stage persona reminded me so
much of a young Nanci Griffith, the thrill of being up there performing
for your fans being evident. The between song stories were just as
affecting as some of the songs and the exemplary guitar picking of her
hubbie Mark only added to a great nights music.

I'd always enjoyed Stacey's cd "Simple Gearle" but this put some of the
songs in a new light. She also gave us a good smattering of new, soon to
be recorded material, from her proposed second cd. If you like Nanci the
'folkie' or Gillian Welch you will simply lap up Stacey. This is a talent
too precious to lose, so lets get out there and support her, at live gigs
and by buying the cds. She returns to the States tomorrow for more dates,
so look out for her in your area, if she's around you are in for a treat.

   Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 17:17:25 EDT
   From: BMiller224@aol.com

Tom Overton writes of Nanci's appearance on "Politically Incorrect" (or is
that "politically correct," I can never keep the terms straight any more):

(( She was great. The other people on the show did most of the talking, and
they were loud. But when Nanci talked she had something poignant to say and
she said it succinctly.

She didn't try to talk over people with volume (and I know she has the volume
from listening to her sing when I met her backstage that she could've talked
over them). I really enjoyed seeing her calmly shine in the midst of these
loud people. >>

I must admit that, as much as I enjoy Nanci's "political" songs (which I've
argued repeatedly are actually moral statements or social commentary rather
than "political" in the strict sense), I cringe now at the thought of her
making actual political statements. The reason is her bizarre letter to
Texas critics last year saying that Texans "literally" eat their young. But
I'm glad to hear she kept any kind of invective like that under control on
that show.

I have tickets for December to see her and Emmylou and several others at
Stanford in a benefit for the international campaign to ban land mines. I
don't think it's necessary for a performer to have a model personal life -
however one would define that - to lend their name to a worthy public cause.
But hopefully they will represent the cause itself competently. That is, if
I agree with the cause. Otherwise I'm happy for them to do something to
discredit it.

I just read the new book by Wendy Kaminer, one of my very favorite social
critics, called ((Sleeping with Extra-Terrestrials.>> Among a variety of
other interesting topics, she talks about the confrontational,
shout-each-other-down style of political discussion that we so often see on
network TV. She dislikes the one-way-or-the-other context in which such
shows frame discussions. How did we ever get the idea that there are only
two sides to an issue, she asks?

And she talks about how that style affects interactions online:

(( For several years now, the *Crossfire* model has prevailed: Every
argument is thought to have only two sides. A debate consists of one side
saying "Is too" and the other side insisting "Is not." So, when millions of
Americans went on-line, they were well prepared for a cacophonous world of
half-finished thoughts and interrupted expositions of ideas. ... Arguments
are not expected to be linear, or particularly coherent. I have always
regarded a good argument as a kind of story (the story of an idea) - but I am
one of the dinosaurs. >>

I love Wendy Kaminer's writing. The problem for someone trying to present a
low key view in a forum like that, which Nanci apprently did, is that if the
game is zinging the other side with one-liners and you can't or won't do
that, you're at a disadvantage.

I did see the show. Besides being poignant and succinct, what did Nanci
actually talk about? Or does it matter? She didn't discuss the eating
habits of Texans, did she?

Which leads me to wonder what kind of management team Nanci's got... I
know they're aware of NanciNet & her Official Webpage... You'd think
they'd use either as a forum to help publicize her upcoming shows and

BTW, DBS is excellent! And second those comments about Bleeker

To all you folks regretting that you missed Nanci on PI:
Rest easy, you didn't miss a thing. It was another horrendous example
of how ridiculous TV has become. It had some great potential for
discussion of the merits of organized religion versus spirituality,
but simply degraded into a one guy trying to project a tough guy,
gangsta image, another buffoon trying to shout even louder while
advancing a preposterous argument about how support of organized
religion cannot help but be supported by an examination of the facts,
(with Nanci trying to counter with examples like the Spanish
Inquisition), all the while trying to bait the gangsta wannabe into
taking a swing at him.

Nanci, Maher, and the 5th participant (an obviously articulate and
intelligent actress whose name escapes me) all tried to offer valid
counters but were simply drowned out by the loud buffoons. I felt like
taking a shower after watching, and although my fears of Nanci being
embarrassed publicly by the experience were unfounded, I wish she
hadn't of bothered and I'm guessing she feels the same way.

I felt the same way in anticipation of this event and was pleased that she
held up her end of the conversation in spite of the incredibly juvenile
antics of two of the other participants.

But I don't think this appearance should discourage Nanci. Intellectually,
she obviously stood head and shoulders above the others, and I wanted to
know more about her thoughts on the subjects that were covered and any
others for that matter. Our public discourse would be well-served if Nanci
and other thoughtful people were given access to the media that is now
accorded mostly to buffoons.

So, if Nanci's management is reading, I would certainly appreciate an
in-depth interview on, for example, the Charlie Rose show. Or maybe a
discussion on that show with other musicians (such as Lyle Lovett, Jim
Rooney, and EmmyLou, or hey. why not the BMO?) on the effect of music in
their lives, what its like to do music on the road for some many years, and
any other subjects they might want to cover. There is certainly enough
content in her songs to touch on a wide variety of topics.

I do agree. I just meant participating in PI was a waste of time. I'd

Hello all -

First time poster, long time lurker -

Thanks to the notice from Tom O. I called the Paramount Theater in Austin
and got myself a ticket for Nanci on November 2nd, along with Don McLean.

Bill Page mentioned hearing at her Barnes and Noble chat that she would be
taping Austin City Limits in November.

Well, the person who took my ticket order wanted to warn me that there would
be cameras that may block part of the performance as this show is being
taped for Austin City Limits. He hoped that I wouldn't mind. I don't think
I'll have a problem with that! (g>

As of Friday there were still tickets available for this small theater show.
After going ten years between my first two Nanci shows, in Boston and in
Austin, I'm very excited to be seeing her again so soon.

Thanks again to Tom O. - I wouldn't have heard of this show if he hadn't
posted his note. I'll let y'all know how the show goes afterwards...Ed

Dear Ed,

The "Austin City Limits" show should be wonderful. I'm very glad you heard
about it here and that you will be in the audience.

In a Blue Moon Orchestra related note, I got to hear Lucinda Williams and her
top-notch band play here in Minneapolis Saturday night. It was at First
Avenue, the club made famous by Prince (think "Purple Rain"!). There are not
many musicians who could entice me to stand up for four-plus hours, but
Lucinda can! (First Ave. has almost no seats, and it was a sold out crowd. We
arrived very early but still could only find a spot along a railing, so we
stood--and leaned--all night, through the opening act and the break and then
through Lucinda and band's fantastic show).

The BMO connection is that Lucinda has Fran Breen on drums. Great to see him,
and of course I am always happy to see my guitar pal Kenny Vaughan. Playing
with Lucinda gives him lots of good challenges. Kenny did some gorgeous
playing and some traveling-elsewhere guitar solos during the performance. It
was exciting to hear and see them. Lucinda played all the songs from "Car
Wheels..." and quite a few others, plus a Howlin' Wolf tune. She is such a
presence and I enjoyed this show a lot. It's the second time we've seen her
here in Mpls. in three months, as she opened for Tom Petty in August. That
was a good show, but this show was unforgettable.

Looks like she's on the road for another month at least. Catch her show if
you can, it's a great band and her songs are gems, as most of you already
know.

Sabrina in Mpls.

One nice thing about used CD shops is that many of them have a

Hi

Hope we're still thinking duets. I know that Paul McCartney has been

re-recording as proper duets (not just backing vocals) are:

Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (can't wait for the 'hands across the water'

Live and Let Die
London Town
Coming Up

Anyone else have any ideas for a complete Macca/Nanci album??

Also, I notice in the UK Radio Times in the satellite listings a channel
called Performance which has listed a 30min programme called Nanci Griffith

this is satellite/cable/digital, and, more to the point, been taping this
