Wanted to wish all y'all a very happy and prosperous new year. I'm
going to Berlin for five weeks with my theatre company, so will have to
come off the list until I get back.
Anybody know if Nanci's slated to play in Germany soon?

Subject: NN: It's an omen
From: "Steve Goldberger" (steve@aldgategroup.com>
Happy new year, gang.
I've just finished playing new year's eve and the rest of the weekend at the
historic Angel Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. My first full gig back
after a brief hiatus for a wee little heart surgery.
It is now after 3 am and I am enjoying some quiet time after the madness. I
am reflecting back on a memorable weekend and start of a new new year. I
have to share with you how last night a mystical sort of thing happened.
First, an older local fellow asked if he could get up and sing a song. He
did a few Johnny Cash numbers including "I Still Miss Someone". I played
that song many years ago in one of my first bands and always loved it.
Then on our break a young fellow (who happened to be visiting from Labrador)
got up and sang "Speed of the sound of Loneliness". I had to get up there
and accompany him, as I just love that one too. He did such a good job I
suggested he do another one, and he said, "How about an Ian Tyson song?" I
requested "Summer Wages" which he did quite well.
I can't believe it. Three songs by strangers in one night that all happen
to be on the OVOR 1 & 2 albums. It must be some kind of omen. (or otoman?)
Coincidence? or has Nanci has taken subliminal control of all. Hmm. The
folk revival lives!

This was on the Folk DJ list this morning. Thought you might find a
friend up there near the top. I sent the whole list in case you are
looking for ways to spend that Xmas cash :-).
The Folk DJ list isn't all that big a group, and the biggest radio
stations playing people like Nanci are not represented on the
list....but I bet it is a pretty accurate sample.

Subject: NN: Grace Griffith?
From: David Gilbert (dgilbert@mindspring.com>
I was browsing through the folk music section at Media Play here in
Atlanta and found a CD by an artist named Grace Griffith. It was
sitting in front of Nanci's OV2. At first glance I thought the title of
the cd was Grace (which it is) and the artist was Nanci. The picture on
the front had similar features as Nanci so it was an honest mistake.
The back cover has a full color/body shot of Grace and again shows
similar features to Nanci.
Does anyone know anything about Grace Griffith? Is there a relationship
to Nanci that I haven't read about?
The music has a Irish/Celtic touch to it, and the vocals are wonderful.
From the dates on the cd it looks like it was originally released in
1993 and re-released in 1996.
Just curious....in chilly Hot'Lanta....

These search engines are so handy, just typed in grace griffith and there
was this page: http://www.loworbit.com/grace/
And indeed when you are browsing through CDs you could be easily be mistaken
by the photo.
I have the same with a big poster hanging in several Dutch CD shops. On this
poster is a Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis and the photos is similar to
one of Nanci from a few years back, but when you look good it is clear it's
not Nanci, but in a glimse my first impression is always: Nanci.

This newsgroup has just been added to my ISPs grouplist and seems to
be fairly new. Get all headers only picked up 10 new messages.
If it is new it might turn out to be a further source of useful
information for Nanci fans. If its old then its too quiet and could
do with some more input.
Maybe I'll see you there.

Matt,
It's an old newsgroup without much action - your ISP must have just picked
it up recently.

Thanks for that, I was under the impression that carrying a full
newsfeed meant that all groups were available and all new newsgroups
were automatically added. Obviously not.
Still it's nice to see an alt.fan.nanci-griffith and I'll be staying
subscribed for a while yet just to see what occurs.

so from the DejaNews news-archive. The URL-address below gives you a

Subject: NN: Hi ... and help with my song
From: "john hawkins" (johnhawkins@hotmail.com>
Hi. I'm one of those lurkers, sitting in my darkened room, evesdropping
on your conversations for the past few months. I thought I'd start the
New Year with a loud and boisterous "Hello" and begin a quest that I
have contemplated for a while:
I remember my first hearing of a Nanci song ... several years ago ...
driving my car down the street like any other day ... then "Love at the
Five and Dime" came on ... never heard it or Nanci before ... had to
pull my car over so that I could concentrate on this beautiful gift ..
have since bought every CD she has ... she's still one of my favourites.
Now for my "quest": several years ago I wrote a "poem" that, recently,
a friend put to music ... it's about abandoned dreams ... and we are
getting a RAVE response ... people crying in my living room ...
Anyway, I want to send it to Nanci and to Emmylou because (a) I admire
them immensely, and (b) I think it's the kind of song they might be
interested in.
Does anyone know how I send it to each of these women? Any leads,
suggestions, etc. will be appreciated.

Hi gang,
Thanks to those who responded to my question on the worth of my 1971
Martin D-18 (of course to me its priceless). I'll probably end up
going to the guitar shop here in Mt. Vernon, OH and have it appraised
for insurance purposes.
Regarding the defective copies of "Lone Star State of Mind," my copy
was fine (purchased about 9 years ago. But did anyone else get a copy
of "Last of the True Believers" with the songs in the wrong order,
"Working Girl is the first song (actually if it was an L.P.
side one and side two are reversed) any others like
that out there or do I have a collectors item?

Hi Bob!
Like you, I've had no problems playing my CD of "Lone Star State of Mind."
As with you again, on my copy of the album "The Last of the True Believers"
the songs are listed in the wrong order. My CD starts with the hilariously
disreputable "Lookin' for the Time (Workin' Girl)" and ends with the
exhilarating bluegrass-flavored "Banks of the Pontchartrain." But the printed
listing runs from "The Last to the True Believers" to "The Wing and the
Wheel."
Of course this is a minor glitch, and doesn't at all hinder my enjoyment of
one of my all-time favorite Nanci albums.
Happy New Year to all!

I have LOTTB on LP and CD. The LP runs from "True Believers" to
"Wing & Wheel", while the CD is "Lookin' For The Time" to
"Pontchartrain". This is the way they are listed on the liner notes and
the way they appear on the LP/CD. How many different variations are we
looking at? Does anyone have the cassette?

From: Little (dlittle032@earthlink.net>
I picked up a used Cd today called "The Folk Scene Collection," a
collection from a radio station in LA called FolkScene on KPFK released
in 1998. Iris, Dar, the McGarrigles, Maura O'Connell, Mary Black, Tish
Hinojosa, Richard Thompson, John Gorka, Bruce Cockburn and more have songs
on this CD.
My question is who are David Wilcox, Lowen & Navarro, and Dillon
O'Brian? Are they as wonderful as they sound live on this collection?
Thanks!

Donna asked...
"My question is who are David Wilcox......?"
Hi All,
Do yourself a really big favor and run down to the music store and buy all the
David Wilcox CD's that you can. That is to say, buy the American David Wilcox.
There is apparently a Canadian DW....but that is not the one on your
compilation CD.
David Wilcox is a superlative singer/songwriter who has heart, courage,
intelligence, wit and an amazing talent. Innovative tunings on acoustic
guitar and story telling are some of the things that set David Wilcox as a
standout in the folk community. But if you ask a DW fan why they follow this
artist they will tell you that it's his lyrics that keep them listening.
Here are some of DW sites to whet your appetite.
http://www.davidwilcox.com/
http://peloton.physics.montana.edu/brett/wilcox.html
http://cybercity.piedmont.net/~dennis/dw-mar98/
By far, the best DW experience is to see him perform live, and with a new
album coming out in February there should be lots of opportunities to catch a
concert.
Hope this helps...

all wonderful! You must be careful, however, there is another artist
named David Wilcox out there. He is completely different and I
personally did not care for him at all.

Subject: NN: Texas Monthly -- get your copy before they're gone
From: Catelaw@aol.com
New Year's good wishes to all and happy anniversary to Bill and Dawn-Marie.
Having just returned from the incomparable Texas hill country, Andy D.'s
Galveston, and the surrounding Gulf Coast plains (my spur-of-the-moment,
solitary escape there with the notion of catching Jerry Jeff at the Galveston
Opera House derailed by an untimely bout with the flu), I was intrigued on my
return by the email mentioning the Texas Monthly article. I still get Texas
Monthly, though I rarely have time to read it, but do enjoy the January "Bum
Steer Awards" issue. Since the writer noted that the article was about "THE
LETTER," I was fully prepared to cancel my subscription immediately,
anticipating that Ms. Nanci had been made a 1998 recipient. She had not.
The article, written by Michael Hall and titled "You Can't Go Home Again," is
a beautifully designed full-length feature with two stunning full page studio
photographs and two smaller insets, one of N's ACL debut and one of her as a
two-year-old with sister Mikki and brother Robert. Aside from the reportage,
I mention these visual details because even if the article was not too long to
reproduce in this format, I think it might be a mistake to merely read the
text without considering it in the context of the artistic care devoted to its
layout.
Notably, she is described throughout as a folksinger.
However, TM isn't shy about printing hard comments and the article contains
both high praise from her admirers and ruthless treason and sedition from her
detractors. Some of the comments on the negative side will no doubt inflame
those of us who are what Kenn Lippert (where is he, anyway?) might describe as
YASENFs -- Yet Another Starry-Eyed Nanci Fan, and the most sensitive are
hereby forewarned...But I'm a devout YASENF and have read it twice and
survived, although there is much in its criticism with which I disagree
stringently and some that is, at best, uncharitable. While it is indeed set
in the context of THE LETTER, Nanci's own comments and insights (and those
photographs) are worth the price. And in reality, the points raised by the
writer, both good and ill, have most all been made in this forum over the past
year. All told, an interesting piece of Griffology for your collections.
The thesis:
"How could one person, a folksinger, provoke such extreme reactions? Clues
could be found in the letter and the life that led to its writing. Critics
figured the whole thing had something to do with the mixed reviews of
Griffith's last album, Other Voices, Too (A Trip Back to Bountiful). Fans
speculated that it had something to do with rumors that she is sick. Everyone
wondered: Is she okay? The short answer is yes, but the longer one is more
complicated."

Dear all,
Happy New Year!
Question: How many times have you heard that Prince record already? Am I
going to be bored with that by the
end of the year...and how much more rich is The Artist Formerly Etc. going to

Anyway, enough of this. I've had a few enquiries (inquiries?) about the full

me a lot longer than I thought it would and I have been very very busy over
the last couple of weeks. But I will be sending it over to the Peetes

Anyway. I am really impressed by Lee Satterfield of The Blue Moon Orchestra.

she have any albums of her own out? Where did she come from? etc. Thanks.

Hi Folkas,
Mark clued us in on the contemporary folk nominees. No
surprises there for me. Here are a few other highlights I
found interesting:
- Emmylou Harris was nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for
the song "Love Still Remains" on Treasures Left Behind.
- BR549 got a long-overdue nomination as did the Mavericks for Best Country
Performance by a Group.
- All the nominees for Country Instrumental Performance are superb, except
that none of them are performing country: (Doc & Merle Watson, Jerry Douglas &
Bela Fleck, Randy Scruggs & Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs.)
- Bob Dylan was nominated for Best Country Song for performing a Garth Brooks
cover. (Sigh, what is the world
coming to?>
- Dixie Chicks are up for Best Country Album and some more stuff.
- Nashville Bluegrass Band nominated along with Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs,
Doc & Merle, and Jim & Jesse for best bluegrass.
- Keb Mo up for Contemporary Blues.
- Ramblin' Jack, The Chieftains (again), Mike Seeger, Norman Blake, and Greg
Brown for Traditional Folk.
- John McCutcheon goes against the Muppets for best kids disc.
- Jimmy Carter (my hero) nominated for Best Spoken Word Album.
- Seinfield battles Foxworthy in the comedy category.
- Bela Fleck vs Wynton Marsalis for Best Instrumental Composition.
- The Hank Williams box got lots of nominations for everything but the music.
- I didn't see Roy's name on the list for Best Remix Producers, maybe next
year?
- There's a category for Best Polka Album?!!
Warm Regards,
-Shawn
