Subject: NN: Another NanciNet Romance
From: "Kathie Bargiel" (Kbarge@wans.net>
Hi Nanci Netters....
:) :) :) :) :) :) (Get the idea.) I'm very happy to announce that
during this month of two full moons, or as Nanci says, "Just once in a very
blue moon," Joe Blau, another NN proposed marriage to me at Yosemite
National Park at an overlook to the valley. "Yes," was my reply. After a
long distance romance that spanned a few years, and a few thousand miles, we
have decided that it was time to live a little "closer" together and tie the
knot. :) He is a real sweetheart.
All of this happened because of the NanciNet. We actually first met
while corresponding through the digest. We met in person two years ago when
a conference brought Joe to the "windy" city. Neither one of us thought
that much would happen between us because of the distance in miles from CA
to IL. How wrong we were.
Yes, the NN has the nicest group of people on the net! Everyone will be
invited to join in the festivities. We have not yet set an exact date, and
the location looks to be leaning towards CA sometime during the summer.
We'll keep everyone posted.
Now I know how Bill and Dawn Marie feel. :)
Just thought I'd share our joy.
Kathie Bargiel

Subject: NN: This is silly, but I need the nancinet's help.
From: Poetmuse@aol.com
hello all-
rather emotional right now- but I have a special request- if anyone has any
extra prayers to go out, could you please forward them to Arizona? My father
was in a car accident this morning and is in the hospital- just got out of
surgery. Things look real bleak around here through tears and worry, so any
positive thought- even that from strangers would really help. Silly, but I
thought I would try. I think I'm doing okay, it's my mom I'm worrying about.
Thank you.

Nanci didn't meet the Flyer on the plane: they were both stranded in the
airport between flights, going different places.

Has there been any followup to their conversation on the plane? Or were they
just--not like two ships passing in the night--but like two jets zooming past
each other in different directions?!

I'm in the Air Force, unfortunately I'm not a pilot, but I still identify with
Flyer. I would say that young pilots probably wouldn't fly First Class, but
senior pilots would.
My question from the song : "He shouted out his name to me, as I ran to make
my
flight" Do we know what his name is?

From: "J. Stephen Robertson" (stever@mindspring.com>
The recent speculation about "the flyer" reminded me of my first thought
after that CD was released. Try to put yourself in the mind of "the
flyer". Since he has met and talked to a prominent singer/songwriter, he
probably looks through her CDs almost every time he visits a record
store. Imagine him picking up a copy of a new CD and realizing that
Nanci not only wrote a song about him, but named the whole album after
him!
Would that make him feel that it was imperative that he contact her
again? Or would it create so much pressure that it would be almost
impossible for him to respond?

I just read a Texas Monthly article that deals with the Nanci letter, and
haven't seen any response here, so I thought I would pass along the info.
I believe it's the most recent Tx. Monthly.

Subject: NN: "River of Song"
From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>
Hi Folk fans,
Did anyone catch the first episode of "Mississippi, River of Song" on
PBS tonight? I saw a teaser about it last week but forgot until I
happened on it by accident. It was a real treat. The premise, as I
understand it, is an exploration of contemporary folk music along the
Mississippi river. Tonight they started way up North and even had a
section on polka music! I couldn't help but see a "crop-circle moment"
there so I forced myself to watch (grits teeth> every accordion filled
frame.
The series is hosted by Ani DeFranco and features artists like Little
Milton (from Lucinda's Greeneville, Mississippi and a testimony to the
victimization chronicled in Kate's "Bascom's Blues"), The Bottle Rockets
(any Rockets fans on this list?), Greg Brown, John Hartford, The
Mississippi Mass Choir, Soul Asylum, Ste. Genevieve Quignolie (who I've
accidentally heard live), even Louisiana past-governor Jimmie Davis
(author of "You Are My Sunshine"). There are too many more artists to
list but you can check out an interactive web site that accompanies the
series at http://www.pbs.org/riverofsong/ There are three more TV
episodes and lots of NPR segments so look for it if you can. If the
first episode is any indication, this series will be absolutely
enlightening.

Are the stars in alignment or something.....?
I have never played guitar and know absolutely nothing about them so the whole
Silvertone discussion went right over my head, but tonight while paging
through my weekly arts newspaper what do I see but a big ad
"BUY OF THE MONTH"
"The Return of the SILVERTONE(great price) ELECTRONIC"
"Available in a variety of finishes at the COOL price of $139"
(their emphasis)
Something I never would have noticed if not for the NNet.....
I don't know if this is a good price or a rare deal but figured I'd pass it
along. So for all you players...

Dear all,
I go onto the digest for a few days and a controversy over
someone called Gilliat kicks off...why do I always miss the
best stuff?
Just to let you know the NN Top 250 has been safely delivered
to The Peetes and Susan is (as I type) inputting the data onto
their website. I hope some of you will take a look when it's
ready (as it took me quite a while to type up!). It's a pretty
comprehensive reflection of what we were all listening to
last year...
All the best,
Robert (Pugsley)

Subject: NN: John & Billy
From: Graham Brown-PRESSTC (graham.brown.01@bbc.co.uk>
Hi folks -
Greetings from London where yesterday was, apparently, the warmest January
day since 1841 (but then that's only 20 to seven!). It was certainly a
glorious day and I took a stroll from the office (in Shepherd's Bush) at
lunchtime to the local shops where I got yet another NanciNet-recommended
CD. It was John Jennings' "Buddy" and it was part of a two CDs for #5 deal.
Just wanted to gloat about that bargain!
For those interested in Billy Bragg, and living in the UK, he is appearing
on Radio 4's 'Any Questions?' at 8pm on Friday. For those outside the UK,
the programme is a current affairs discussion with a panel that is more
likely to include politicians than musicians.
Happy New Year to one and all,
Graham

Subject: NN: more David Wilcox trivia
From: "Steve Goldberger" (steve@aldgategroup.com>
Doug Kellam wrote: "Here is a vote for the other David Wilcox. He is more of
a blues performer who achieved significant success here in the Toronto area."
I remember the many times David Wilcox and my band (Black Creek) shared the
stage in Toronto clubs in the mid '70s. He was an excellent guitarist and
showman and would pack them in with his many antics. He started out
playing blues covers and then decided that in order to make a living he
would start writing, recording and performing his own songs. That's when I
lost interest in him. However, he has certainly made a name for himself
across Canada.
Ok so here's the six degrees of separation to Nanci trivia. In the early
70's he replaced David Rea (who happened to be the writer of the huge hit
song, "MIssissipi Queen" for the band Mountain with Felix Papillardi) as the
guitarist in Ian Tyson's band the Great Speckled Bird. He truly is an
amazing guitarist.
AND David's sister, Victoria, was the drummer in a band I had going in the
80's called Goldie Lox and the Bagels. She was a great drummer too.
AND we also happened upon the "US folky David Wilcox" in a small folk club
near Bangor, Maine about 10 years ago. We had just gotten to know his
current record and were quite interested in seeing him live. He was good,
but the thing I remember most was that he was so excited about his new
Larivee guitar. I was pleased with that because it was the same model as
mine! (Larivee is an excellent Canadian luthier.)
