hi all,

just drove back to college station from austin and the nanci/don mclean
show at the paramount. i didn't really know what to expect; however, although
the nanci content was limited i was pleasantly surprised. nanci sang "i love
you" with don and then another song i don't remember. then nanci sang "wing
and a wheel" complete with the BMO, James Hooker and Pat McInerney as don
mclean took a break. then the surprise, garth brooks came out and sang solo
"the chair" by don mclean. garth is a very talented singer. then nanci, don
and garth sang "american pie" together. nanci looked like she was having a
great time and really enjoying herself, bouncing around on the stage dancing
and having a great time. she was in great form, and i have to admit don
mclean's voice impressed me too. he closed with "starry starry night". a very
enjoyable show.

take care all,

Hey, Nanci-Netters!

I'm Cat, don't post much unless I've got something really good. I
just returned from an Austin City Limits 25th Anniversary concert
at Austin's Paramount Theatre on South Congress.

Don McLean opened the show and was absolutely magic. Of course he
saved American Pie for last, as well as Vincent. He was hysterically
funny throughout.

He then brought out Nanci, with her classic pageboy. She was wearing
a pair of black slacks, flat heeled black shoes, and over the slacks
was a gauzy, glittery tunic that was almost mid-calf. She wore a
velvet cardigan sweater over all that. She sang a slow Buddy Holly
song with Don and then joined him in an encore of American Pie with
Garth.

Nanci was literally dancing and bouncing all over the stage, making
great stage pictures with Don and Garth. She was absolutely having
a blast and was in great voice. She was graceful, classy and impish
at the same time, playing off the guys as well as the audience.

Unfortunately, the only song she got to do alone was Wing and the
Wheel with the string section of the Austin Symphony and her Blue
Moon Orchestra. Garth only got one song in, Don's "I Never Thought
You Would" and then Don came out and finished the show out with
Dreidel and some new stuff he had written.

Kept looking for NanciNetters--even wore my Nanci shirt under a very
dressy pantsuit and didn't find any. Actually the show was very
difficult to get tickets for--I lucked out by winning the last pair
in a phone contest on KGSR, and because I knew Nanci was born in
Seguin, Texas, we got to go to the show!

   From: Rob Remig (rob.remig@psinet.com>

On the evening of November 2, I had the pleasure of attending "An Evening with
Don McLean, with guest, Nanci Griffith" at the Paramount Theater in Austin,
Texas. Apparently added later to the bill was Garth Brooks, as his name was
not part of the original advertising or printed on the ticket! This show was
definitely about Don McLean. He mentioned that Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison
were part of his early musical development, and he opened with a tune by Buddy
Holly. Miss Nanci later joined Don for two of his songs, and he then left the
stage while Nanci and the Blue Moon Orchestra performed "Wing and the Wheel."
Playing guitar was Brian Wood, who Nanci introduced as having been part of the
original BMO. After intermission it was on to more Don McLean, who was then
joined by Garth Brooks for a couple songs. Then Nanci and Garth sang several
songs with Don, with the finale being the three of them (and the audience)
singing "American Pie." Don said he appreciated the good attendance and warm
reception, as he realized he is not exactly part of the "in" group right now.
Well, I didn't want to tell him that there was at least one person in the
audience who was really there just to see Nanci and hear her perform! About
Nanci: I have seen her three times before, but she looked different last
night. It might have been her hair being parted in the middle and flipped
under at the top of the shoulders. But it was really her smile. I have never
before noticed that her smile goes almost from ear to ear! Almost Mary Tyler
Moore-like. She was spunky, energetic, flirtatious, playful, and very
relaxed. She reminded me somewhat of a school girl at recess, just having
fun! This show was taped by the people
who produce "Austin City Limits" but will not be broadcast as ACL. They said
it will come out in March 2000 on the PBS TV stations. Be watching for it; I
think it will be worth getting the VCR ready.

Brian, aka Mickie Merkens husband. Way to go Brian!!! Actually, just
got an email from Mickie about the show, and she will let us know when
it airs, too. She also said it was a night to remember. Brian often
plays in Austin on Monday nights at Artz Rib House with Sarah Elizabeth
Campbell for anyone there...we got to go last week and had a great
time. Rosalie Sorrels was there and did a song or two - I'd never had
the chance to see her live before. And Sarah has a new CD out by the
way which I recommend and you get more Brian on that!!!

Anyway, hope everyone is well, and I'm looking forward to catching up
with all of you and the Nanci news,

Sarah

   From: QUELIN@aol.com

Todd writes:

(( Why has country music gotten so bad these days? >>

Opinion time again. Duck and cover folks!

I've asked myself this same question recently and I think this has happened
before. Country seems to go through these cycles.

Remember the early 70's when Olivia Newton-John was considered country?
Eeeek!

Remember in the late 70's (I think) when Urban Cowboy came out and all of a
sudden, everything was top-forty-pop-style country. Lyrics were flimsy (to
be kind) and anyone who knew Mickey Gilley could be a top ten recording
artist. Then there was a little voice that rang out with a real country
feel...then another...then a couple more. I think I remember Ricky Skaggs
(not exactly an overnight sensation, but perceived as such) being one of the
first to bring back the solid stuff. Randy Travis came out around that time
and the market corrected itself, so to speak.

It happens from time to time. Someone starts a fad or a movie causes
something to gain attention and the so-called experts in Nashville just
create one synthetic artist after another. There's not a lot of substance
these days. Can you imagine if the true basis of country were the likes of
Shanasal Twang?

I'm looking forward to the day it all comes back around again. Even Dolly's
doing bluegrass again. Hopefully, someone will break out and take it back.
At this year's awards, Vince Gill even encouraged the artists and fans to
hang on to the roots of the music...then he released a duet with
Barbra....um...bad example.

There is hope and a light beyond these woods. :)

I know, I know...shhhhh, Que. I can't help it. This is important stuff.

Glad to be with you all,
Quelin

I just happened to run across a book at the local library yesterday that
attempts to answer that question. It's called "In the Country of
Country" by Nicholas Dawidoff. Here are a few excerpts:

--------------------------------------

"[In 1995] The country charts were dominated by a series of handsome,
video-friendly young swains dressed in boots, snug jeans, and the
inevitable Stetsons that won them their nickname, "the hat acts." The
music was similarly homogenized. Blending down-home lyrics with
fusillades of rock'n roll guitar, "Real" or "Hot" Country, as it became
known, attracted great clumps of suddenly intrigued crossover customers
who hadn't been exposed to country before and were charmed by all the
quaint lines about boots, hound dogs, and achy-breaky hearts. From Tracy
Byrd to Tracy Lawrence, the voices that sold were clear, smoothly
drawling tenors and baritones. Nice enough nearly all of them, but
mostly quite similar and decidedly lacking in character. Ear candy, they
call it in Nashville. A Madison Avenue advertising man put it to
me:'It's slick stuff and it sells. That's the American Way'."

"The biggest reason for Real Country's success is that it's what gets
played on country radio- to the exclusion of everything else. Most large
country radio stations rely on a standardized play list that is
distributed all over the United States. Even if disc jockeys at country
stations wished to stray from the sheet and play records by other
singers, they couldn't, something Iris DeMent's husband Elmer discovered
after a man at a country radio station rejected DeMent's latest single.
"I'll tell you why we won't play this," the radio man said. "It's too
country. We only play Real Country."

"The situation led to discussions of what country music is. People came
to various conclusions, but along the way most of them ended up
explaining why, to them, Real Country isn't really country. They don't
dismiss it because it's commercial; from Jimmie Rodgers day on, country
has always been commercial music. Their concern is more that Real
Country doesn't meet Hank William's prescription: it doesn't sound
sincere. The spirit of Jimmie Rodgers is suddenly missing from
mainstream country. Or, as George Jones put it, "They've taken the heart
and soul out of country music.' Almost without exception, the country
musicians I spoke with told me that country music 'has to be played with
feeling.' Yet if you ask any of them what this means, the answer is
always a variation on the response Fats Waller gave to a woman who
wondered about the meaning of jazz: 'If you don't know by now, I can't
tell you,' he said."

----------------------------------

The author goes on to interview most of the living legends of country
and bluegrass music. I highly recommend this book.

Hey,

I guess it's no secret that I'm a big Dolly Parton fan. She's on Leno
now, wearing a tight-fitting, low-cut, blue dress and talking about how
her daddy once cussed a preacher who pulled out a rattlesnake while she
and her sisters were performing in a East Tennessee church. It'll be a
few minutes before she sings, so I thought I'd say, once more, that THE
GRASS IS BLUE is a great album. One of her very best, in this bluegrass
fan's opinion. If projections hold, based on initial sales, this will
be the best selling Sugar Hill release ever.

There's a rumor going around these parts that she's about to retire to
Sevier County, Tennessee, and open a recording studio which will feature
local talent.

Gotta run, it's nearly time for her song.

(pause>

Ah, she did "Train Train," one of the best cuts on the disc. She had a
pretty decent band too, I saw Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on
fiddle, Jerry Douglas on resonator guitar, and another pretty songbird
singing harmony vocals.... none other than Alison Krauss, who else.

There's plenty of good info about the album, her new movie now showing
on BRAVO, and all the latest news at http://www.dolly.net

Has anyone heard Denice Franke's new CD "You Don't

I've ordered it thru CDNOW but it has been on backorder

Yes it is, I highly recommend it. It's actually a 1997 CD but one I have
been listening to a lot in '99.

You can see and hear Denice Franke and Eric Taylor performance as part of
the Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage series on the web. The concert was
broadcast live on October 25, 1999 via RealAudio/RealVideo, and is archived at:

Kate Campbell's performance as part of the same Millenium Stage series will

One of our students asked her who she liked to listen to. The first person

Also, she later called EL Harris the country singer with the most integrity.

DVD is essentially a high density CD. A DVD disk can hold maybe five
times what a CD can hold. DVD players can read/play both DVD disks and
CDs; CD players cannot read/play DVDs.

That's a layman's opinion, I'm sure one of the techies will correct
it...

Hello, Nancinetters, and what fine fall weather we're having in Texas!

Most of you have already seen Nanci and the Crickets on Austin City
Limits, but I saw a tape of it for the first time last night. Hoo boy!
>From the opening song to the closing of the credits, it was wonderful.
My significant other liked it pretty well, though she didn't get
teary-eyed during "Gulf Coast Highway" like I did. The last time I saw
Nanci visually was Oct. '97 at the Austin Music Hall, and it was about
halfway back so I couldn't see the band members that well. The ACL video
did a fine job of showing the band. They always do, on every show, it
seems. She gets PBS on her cable, lucky gal. After the ACL tape went
off, there was a tribute to Muddy Waters on PBS, so we watched that.
She really likes the blues! (a keeper, for sure ;-)

I have DishNet, and for some strange reason they don't air ACL at any
time on the East channels. I have emailed them several times, they say
it's PBS's problem. I email PBS, they say it's DishNet's problem.
Sheesh. Anybody else having this runaround? I get the same runaround
when I try to transfer my old 401k's to my mutual fund, but that's
another topic. Was that what "Runaroud Sue" was really about back in
the 60s? ;-)

Y'all have a great weekend!
