Subject: NN: 'Dust Bowl Sumphony'
Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 17:18:32 -0500
From: "Kenneth Johns" (KJohns2001@email.msn.com>
Well it finally got here, my very own copy of 'Dust Bowl Symphony'. I
was intrigued by the choice of songs and the way they were arrainged. I
found the changes from the 'old' versions to be a mix of subtle changes
and more complex ones. In other words, they were what I would expect
from any new 'Album' (am I revealing my age here?) of Nanci's that
contained previously released songs.
Personally I have no problem with any artist making changes to their
music. I mean, after singing a song hundreds of times, if you don't
change it a little here and there, it would become awfully boring don't
you think?
I would advise anyone who listens to this to do it on a full sized
system though, a portable Cd player with tiny speakers just is not going
to do the music justice. I think my favorite 'old' song is 'These Days
In An Open Book' and my favorie new one is 'Drops From The Faucet'. I
think Nanci should do more torch songs, she has the voice for them.
Overall I give the Album 4.5 stars out of 5. The only reason it is not
a 5 star album is the dearth of new material.
Take care and may your own wings and wheels take you wherever you want to go!

lyrics and voice. If you don't like soundbites down your computer simply

Alright, from the stone age - private replies unless I'm not the only
fool -- so, what do I need to be able to hear MP3...do I have to go buy
something to dowload, is it free....
does it hurt much???
Thanks,

For Sarah and others, I strongly recommend the Real Audio free jukebox player.
go to http://www.real.com/jukebox/
and click on the link
Real Jukebox Minimum System Requirements
If your system meets the requirements, download the free file.
It installs itself when done. It plays mp3, wav, and even CDs
on your computer CD player. With it, you can even record CDs
onto your hard drive in a compressed format. The audio quality
to me is indiscernible from the actual CD itself. You can even
have it download the title, genre, and track list of the current
CD you are playing.
Sarah, from your headers I believe you are using an older version
of Netscape and a Mac. I'm pretty sure you need OS8 or better,
but give it a look-see.

Subject: NN: Nanci in Florida

From: raj@inspace.net (Bob Juliano)
>// Last time that I remember Nanci in Florida was in 95, Flyer tour.
>// And I missed it. [BP]
Yes, that's what I thought, Bill. I missed out too, I don't
remember why.
I received an email from someone who thought that Nanci played
Tampa this time around. I think that the possibility might have
been discussed on this List, but the show never happened.
I know that there are logistical headaches involved with
hauling a large band around a big state, and promoters here are
having a hard time lining up ANY national acts because of the way
most of the venue deals are pre-structured. So I'm not just
picking on our gal Nanci. But to release three albums since '95
and not even give us Floridians a sideways nod is starting to
stick in my craw.
Ten good reasons for Nanci to do a Florida tour:
10. The weather here is a lot like southern Texas.
9. Cuban food is great. Roast pork, black bean soup, baked
plantains. Yum.
8. More people live here than in all but three other states.
7. Some of them speak English and can understand Nanci's lyrics.
6. Florida Cracker food is great. Gator tail, swamp cabbage
and boiled peanuts with a beer chaser for desert. Yum.
5. We are tired of the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.
4. Iris Dement comes here every year and loves it. (well, I
THINK she does)
3. We're supposed to have a two party political system. We
need at least ONE Democrat, even if it's only borrowed for a
few days.
2. Construction on I-75 is nearly five years closer to being
completed than since your last tour date here. They are
still working on it.
And the numero uno reason is:
Yup! you guessed it!
1. We don't eat our young.
Nanci Griffith, Come On Down!
All in good fun. Apologies to Letterman and Bob Barker.

Come try Utah sometime. If only we could get Nanci out here next
year to kick Senator Hatch's butt out of office like she has
threatened to do on her last few stops here...

John Edward Graveling wrote giving a recommendation for this guy. I
went and listened to his song 'Angel Tonight'. It was really beautiful.
But, it left me with a burning question in my mind. Has this guy ever
heard Nanci do 'Nobody's Angel'? I swear, maybe it was because I had
just listened to 'Nobody's Angel' on the 'Dust Bowl Symphony' CD, but it
was like I was listening to a from the heart flip side ballad written
with this song in mind. If anybody else goes to the music download
site, at www.mp3.com/kevinmontgomery give this song a listen after
first hearing "Nobody's Angel' and see if you don't agree with me. Let
me know what you think.

a heartbreakingly beautiful voice ... i heard her on thistle/shamrock and

first i was disappointed because it was slower/more mellow than the
selections on t&s ... but it's grown on me considerably and i love it. her

It drew to a close a couple of days too early John!
Last night I went to see Eric Taylor at the 12 Bar Club in Tin Pan Alley,
and he was superb. A remarkable venue, fairly small, the thirty people in
the audience almost filling the place, but the acoustics and the atmosphere
were incredible - just Eric and his guitar, no backing group, and it was a
delight. The support act was Michael Weston King, and he was pretty good as
well, although I'd never heard of him before.

Agreed - a fabulous performance. And with about 6 encores too! I'd not
seen MCC live before, and it was definitely worth the trip to London.
I heard 'It Works' for the second time (first time was on Radio 2 the
Thursday before, where MCC & John Jennings played 2 tracks). The parody
'If I were ...' was very entertaining.
MCC mentioned that the BBC had been recording on the Tuesday, so hopefully
we'll hear that in the not too distant future - I seem to recall that the
recording of Nanci at the Barbican last year was played about a month after
it was recorded.
'Party Doll and other favorites' has spent a lot of time in the CD player
this week. I must admit that I wasn't too impressed with it on the first
few plays, but it seems to have grown on me. It's sharing time with Trio
(Dolly Parton/Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris) and Loose Diamond (Katy
Moffat).

Indeed! And thanks to meeting John, I'll be buying Kevin Montgomery's CD
when it comes out.

Hi y'all
You wouldn't believe how much I had to pay John G to say those nice things
about me n Julian ;-)
It was a fabulous evening! I had a superb time - cannot add to what the two
J's have written except to say that as I left the house I thought as long as
she plays "Stones In The Road" and "Jubilee" I'll be a happy girl. Well I
got the first, but not the latter - guess I'll just have to go to her next
concert! Oh and "I Feel Lucky" ROCKED!!! Woweeeee! I just love her
suggestive tone of voice when she tells Lyle n Dwight there's no need to fight
You know I'm not very comfortable with new people, new singers, new music -
had to force myself to go (which of course in retrospect sounds daft!) so
many thanks to John G and Catie Curtis (the new bits) for making it painless
and wonderful.
Kate I **REEEAAALLY** need to buy a CD player Osborne

Hey Gang--
Last night, just as I was attempting to organize my Bettie
Page photos by subject (I can never seem to get past the
B's), I received a message via the Moonpie Mailing List that
Kate Campbell has recorded a new CD of mostly gospel tunes
that will be available, only by mail-order, by Christmas.
This is really exciting news! I've been tied up most of the
day, but as soon as I can get away, I plan to mail in my
order to the address listed at Kate's website,
www.katecampbell.com! I did a lot of my Christmas shopping
at a shoe store in New Orleans last weekend, but I think
there's a little room to stuff a spanking new Kate Campbell
CD into a few stockings. What great timing!

I suspect somebody out there can answer my questions
about the so-called baritone guitar (a tuned up 6
string bass.) How one usually tuned? A fifth down
from a standard guitar/a fourth up from a bass? What
srings does it take/require/demand? And is it the
infamous tic-toc bass?
