AM I READING THIS RIGHT???? AS IN, NANCI AND DAR WILLIAMS????????? wow!!!!

Nanci and Dar Williams together would be ~ how do we say in French? ~ tres
fabulous!!!! (Okay, so this Brit Lit major failed French due to several
breathtaking back packing trips in Upper Michigan in college...in fact, I
was gonna use a French phrase or two here, but drain bamage kicks in due to
years of early hippie-type substance-type abuse, and I don't dare venture an
attempt. I despise sounding stupid after umpteen years of feigning my
brilliance and fooling my corporate superiors. Forgive my lame
proclivities).

Nonetheless, Nanci and Dar? Dare I say "ROAD TRIP!!!" Where the hell is
Belushi when you need him?

This year, 1999, has been a pretty fine year, in my perspective, for music.
I was going to try to hit the Indigo Girls again in Ypsi on December 12th ( I
think that's the date...), I just oughta HEAD EAST a few days and journey on
into Pittsburgh. Nanci and Dar will be a "must see." If I can get the time
off, I'm going. Anyone want to jump on the train????

Okay, I'm calm again. But what a wonderful concert this will be.

You really should go!

No, but if you're trekking to Pittsburgh alone, I need somebody to split a
room with to save some cash. I'm heading up from NC! Get your ticket now,
I called an hour and a half after they went on sale yesterday and I'm
already back on the fourth row.

Yee-haw, life is good........

Hi...not many Nanci posts have passed my small screen. I'm still reeling
from the Indigo Girls in LA ~ great concert! REALLY great concert....I am
so sated that words elude me. I miss the intelligent discourse I found on
Nancinet....someone care to start a thread?

I know I sound profoundly lame, but I am still working through my thoughts
about both DBS and the IG CoNS. DBS is a retrospective effort enhanced
orchestrally, full of classic Nanci in full and beautiful voice; IG CoNS is
quite fresh, most of which works very well. I refrain from reviewing CoNS
here, because Nancinet is not what it is about, and beyond that, addressing
the intelligent and quirky lyrics the IG write would take hours (from my
perspective).

Nonetheless, this genre of "confessional" music (folk "extended," according
to my musician friends in the midwest) is WHERE it is at, and I welcome the
chance to sing it loud and proud. Anyone on the list who likes the
Willeys...well, Friday Night at the Radio on Bridge Street in Grand Rapids is
where you want to be.

And anyone on the Nanci list who feels compelled to listen to the Indigo
Girls, check out the new cd, Come on Now Social, or Swamp Ophelia, or Rites
of Passage (pinnacle IG, with ultimate harmony).

Another list I'm on has folks compiling their Top 20 of the
decade...a little harder to narrow down, but a fun exercise. Mine is still
in the works and I'm finding that it's based pretty much on those cd's that
spent the most time in my cd player. Maybe 2 lists are in order.

Also, when is it time to start on 1999 top 10 CD lists?
What do ya'll Nancicentric Universalists think?

This method would be easier to evaluate if we knew
more about you. Could it be you're just lazy? Have
you ever changed the cds in your player this decade?
If you make all 1991 choices we'll be suspicious.

Well, I'm not sure how to take that. I don't post that
often, but I have been known to throw in my two cents here and there. Lets
see....lazy, maybe, at times, but not in the sense you suggest. Not enough
to even own a CD changer. Which means I actually have to make choices about
what I want to hear every time. I like to think of myself as fairly diverse
in my musical tastes, but like most people, I do gravitate towards certain
CD's that move me for one reason or another. I have a pretty extensive
collection (when compared to most folks, although probably not as big a some
of the people on this list), 600+ CD's which probably span from the 20's to
the present, so my list would not be all 1991 choices.

I was just tossing out an idea, after reading cate's
suggestion of Top 10 of '99. I've read some pretty interesting picks in
other places. Lots of lists are being gathered now that we are approaching
the end of the decade/millennium. Didn't think it would be a controversial
suggestion...

Well, I can't resist clearing this up a little, and I'm sure a certain
person will sincerely appreciate it. I don't know who the guy was who
was supposed to do the latest poll, but you see, a couple of years ago,
there were two very comprehensive and scientific polls collected and
published to an extremely professional web site. The list member who so
masterfully conducted these projects still abides and occasionally
posts. I have no doubt that this wonderful fellow, who we all know and
love, would be the perfect person to resurrect this project. I don't
want to give away his identity, or put any undue pressure on him, but as
a hint, look for quotation marks between his first and last name!

Warm Regards,

   From: Reid Mitchell (reidmitchell@yahoo.com>

Once I started considering what the best new releases
of the 90s might be, I scurried (you know, like a bug,
like Gregor in the Kafka story) to my cd collection to
check dates and confirmed what I already suspected;
many of my favorite performers did much of their
strongest work in the late 80s. Drat. But here's my
list of cds, in no meaningful order.

Robert Ward, FEAR NO EVIL
Nanci Griffith, FLYER
John Hiatt, STOLEN MOMENTS
John Prine, LOST DOGS AND MIXED BLESSINGS
Shawn Colvin, A FEW SMALL REPAIRS
Lucinda Williams, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD
Corey Harris, FISH AIN'T BITING
Gorecki, Symphony No # 3., London Sinfonetta
Kate Campbell, SONGS FROM THE LEVEE,
Abullah Ibriham, MANTRA MODE

also rans:
Daniello Perez, PANAMONK
Carlene Carter, LITTLE ACTS OF TREASON
Geri Allen, MAROONS
Bob Dylan, TIME OUT OF MIND
Iris Dement, INFAMOUS ANGEL

Dwight Yoakam This Time

mind.

Actually, it is not the cost of the player that is the most important
thing here, but the size and quality of the speakers....a really good
high quality headphone set is also OK. I was badmouthing the tiny
little speakers...the size of cigarette packs... that most systems seem
to come with these days. Of course this also applies to headphones with
speakers the size of a pinhead.
By all means buy the CD, just find some decent speakers to hear it on at
least once.
Best wishes and may your own wings and wheels take you wherever you wish
to go!

Hey Folks-

Recently, I've been working on reading all the books in my small, local
library on the subject of folk music or country music. Right now, I'm
about halfway through one called "Three Chords and the Truth" by
Laurence Leamer. At first glance, you probably wouldn't expect to find
anything of interest to us, since the author emphasizes a lot of country
radio stars on the dust jacket.

But this book contains an in-depth look at Tony Brown's career leading
up to his elevation to the top spot at MCA, where he tried to make a
statement by signing Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, and Nanci. And it
contains a lot of interesting info on Emmylou's career. On the
mega-stars like Garth and Wynona, the author tends to emphasize the
negative aspects of their personality that are hardly ever reported. And
you get an in-depth look at the business dynamics at work in the
Nashville music industry.

One really interesting fact: my old neighbor Pat Alger left a cotton
mill village in LaGrange, GA to go to Nashville and become a songwriter.
Now he earns at least a million dollars for EACH song he writes or
co-writes for Garth Brooks. Now where did I leave that rhyming dictionary.....

Hidin' Out in the Georgia Pines-
Wishin' It Would Rain,
Steve Robertson

Well the great news from the UK is that the Millenium is going to get off
to a great musical start. John Prine and Iris DeMent are playing the
Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 15th January (two days after my
birthday). It's the sort of double bill to simply make the mouth water.
I've got my customary front row (well second row) seats for what should
be, quite simply, a night to remember. The company here in London that
night is also going to be quite special, so what a start to the New Year.
