Subject: NN: I Know You Rider-Grateful Dead (no Nanci content)

   From: Reid Mitchell (reidmitchell@yahoo.com>

Those interested in the Grateful Dead might should
check out the cd "The Music Never Stopped: Roots of
the Grateful Dead," an anthology of songs the Dead covered.
Unfortunately, "I Know You Rider" is not included, but
lots of other great stuff is--from Marty Robbins to
Charley Patten to the Dixie Cups.

Interesting that two of what I think of as S. F. Bay
Area bands, Hot Tuna and Grateful Dead, recorded "I
KNow You Rider;" didn't the Byrds (LA) do it too? Was
it floating around the California folk scene in the
early 60s?

Subject: NN: Three "newer" releases...
   Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 08:35:08 -0500
   From: "David Steere" (dsteere@sil.si.edu>

To all of you contemplating "Best of Lists" these days, run--don't walk--to
find the following amazing new releases. What a spectacular year it's been for
new albums! Traditional old Bill Page feels we must limit "Best of 99" lists to
ten choices. Ah, well. Seek and you will find.

Angela Kaset "Inside Out"--the second release from this wonderful, torchy and
theatrical, singer-songwriter. The opening title cut is worth the disc alone.
But, song after song, this disk glows. And if you can imagine a funny, sexy,
song about being the only woman left in the world on a desert island inhabited
by men (most of them Italian)... Go to songs.com or angelakaset.com.

Sally Barris "Reluctant Daughter"--a great fragile and sweet, but hard edged
(at times), singer-songwriter in a great Nashville production. Listen for Sam
Bush, Victor Krauss, Gillian and David. To those familiar with Kate MacKenzie,
you'll recognize "Standing Still" (Sally's own song). Once again available
from songs.com.

Irene Kelley "Simple Path"--without a new Patti Loveless cd this year, Irene's
gorgeous voice and cd serves beautifully. Where did she come from? A
Nashville production, again. Victor Krauss (again), Claire Lynch on harmony.
Wait until you hear Irene's version of her own "O Mexico." Makes one forget
Trisha's version. Available from Miles of Music.

   From: ljburrito@earthlink.net (Doug Mccalmont)

Good morning ANgels,

Are there any listers planning on going to the Landmine concert at El
Camino college in Torrence, Ca on December 3? If so is there any
interest on having a get together. This will be my First live Nanci
experience, and although it may be short, I'm really looking forward to
it. It would be great to meet some other listers.

Folks,
I'm going, There's a great Coffee house across the street from El Camino
that would be great to meet up at. The parking lot is closer than the campus
parking and free. I know the owner, so it shouldn't be a problem. If it is I
take home my Black velvet painting of Elvis that he has on display. If
anyone needs directions, E-mail me directly. BTW has anyone mentioned the
new Dolly Parton album? No I'm not joking, get it its really good. "silver
dagger' and "I still miss someone" are the highlights. Other than that the
Emerson Quartet is going to come out with a Shostakovitch cycle next year.
As a promo they have just put out the greatest of the 15 quartets the
8th,( it think the greatest chamber work of the entire twentieth century) in
a 20 minute cd for 5 bucks. If you are at all open to this type of music, do
yourself a favor and get this disc. Just don't think 'Vivaldi' or 'Mozart'
when you pop it into your player.

No, I won't be going, I live where the sleet and rain doth drop. At least
the Weather Channel says so....But I have to chime in about the Dolly
recording, Grass Is Blue. It is very good. I bought it for ma and pa, but
I really like it, myself. I like "I Still Miss Someone," ~ Johnny Cash
influence, I believe. It rings true for me right now....

Subject: NN: R.I.P Doug Sahm

   From: Tom Gill (tgill@igc.org>

I was truly shocked and taken aback to read the news last weekend of the
passing of Doug Sahm: he and his various incarnations really epitomized
Texas music, and his passing leaves a huge void in the list of those who
have been able to successfully mix musical styles into a stew that's
better than the sum of its parts.

If you haven't checked out his last studio album, "S.D.Q. '98" (on
Watermelon Records), do so- it's a classic, an absolute hoot in Doug
Sahm style. I'm sad I didn't discover this album till early '99, and
thus it was too late to list on my chart of the ten best albums last
year. It deserved to be there.

Unfortunately Stephane Grappelli passed away two years ago, but his music still
remains. If you like this type of music listen to Didier Lockwood (he's the
keeper of the flame now).

Happy thanksgiving to all the american netters and peace to all the rest.

Subject: NN: Blackhawk
   Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 18:20:32 -0600
   From: Ed Maier (eddie@flash.net>

This song from Emmylou Harris' album Wrecking Ball has always
intrigued me when the writer Daniel Lanois tells the story
in the words of White Winged Dove, Blackhawk's wife,

While he pushed the burning ingots
        In Dofasco stinking air

I originally thought Dofasco was a town along the New Mexico
or Arizona border with Mexico (I call it Baja, Texas) with a
steel mill belching sulfur fumes and other pollutants. I got
out some maps, and couldn't find any town with that name.

Anyhow, I did a web search on Dofasco, and lo and behold, it
is a steel mill in Hamilton, Ontario. When I think of Canada,
pollution is the *last* thing that comes to mind. The several
visits that I remember are of well-kept yards with flowers, no
graffiti on the busses or walls, clean air, and very clean
streets. I always wondered why we couldn't do the same in the
United States.

Dofasco also owns owns 50% of a steel mini mill in Gallatin County,
Kentucky, but I don't believe that's what Lanois is referencing.
(Lanois is Canadian.) The web search also brought to light a
serious effort by environmentalists and Dofasco to clean things
up. Makes ya wonder if Lanois' song might have prompted it.

Ed,
Dofasco also has (had) a major steel plant in the west part of Montreal. It
may or may not still be there depending on the political situation/economy.
The continuing political unrest in Quebec over language and separation have
driven many businesses out of the province and the unemployment rate is
staggering there (close to 20% in Montreal).

Subject: NN: WUMB Top Folk Albums/CDs of All Time
   Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 07:35:15 -0500
   From: "Scott Johnsen" (sjohnsen@webhire.com>

Hello Everyone,

This year, one of the Boston area folk music stations had members "vote" on the
top 100 folk albums/ cds of all time. For an entire week, they would play cuts
from each album for a half an hour uninterrupted starting with number 100. At
the end of each day, the list would be posted on their Web site (WUMB.ORG)
reflecting how far they had gotten through the list.

The list is below. I find it not surprising that the list is heavy with recent
releases however, I was surprised to see so many from the late 60's and early
70's. Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell and Fairport Convention among others. At any
rate, enjoy.
