Subject: NN: So Cal NanciNet gathering
   From: Steve Brogden (steveb@adnetsol.com>

Any Southern California NanciNetters interested in getting together after
Bill Hearne's concert this Saturday in Thousand Oaks should email me
privately. NanciNetter Stanley Zucker and I would love to meet as many
fellow NanciNetters as we can. Just let us know if you can be there.
Should be a great evening.

The concert is in Thousand Oaks at the Forum Theater, Civic Arts Plaza on
January 16, 1999 at 8pm. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the
Children's department of the Thousand Oaks Library. Tickets are available
through Ticketmaster.

Bonnie Hearne is still battling anemia and colitis and will not be able to
perform. Santa Fe bass player and vocalist Susan Hyde Holmes will
accompany Bill for this concert.

Come one. Come all.

Subject: NN: road trip #?
   From: ingaqotr@CTC.Net (Amy C. McKibbin)

Hi NNers,
Just got back from another wild road trip...this time out to Colorado and
Nebraska to visit relatives (relatively speaking)...got to meet Mark
(catfan) in Iowa for a great steak dinner...what a nice guy! I've got to
start keeping track of the NNers I've met in person. We've probably had
this discussion before, but who holds the record for most NNers met in
person? There are several folks on here (Bill Page, Kimbro, Ferguson, the
Peetes, to name a few) who've definitely got me beat, but I'm interested in
a head-count. It's such a great thing to do, and never a
let-down....friends out in the madness, like stars spangled across the
globe...

Gosh Amy, you keep up those cross-country road trips and you'll be way
ahead of anyone! I've been fortunate enough to meet many people on the
NN, mostly because of festival or concert get-togethers and parties like
the Blue Moon and Katefest Jams. I can't imagine an accurate count, but
I'd estimate I've met about fifty list members. (I suspect Bill Page has
me beat and probably some other folks. If he comes up with an accurate
count from the Knoxville jam, I could venture a closer guess.) Not all
of the folks I've met are still on the list, not sure what that says!
But, they've all been very nice and each meeting seems like a little
adventure. I'm sort of an excitement junky, little bit of a risk taker
maybe, and I've learned from this list how exciting it is to venture
into personal rendezvous. There's always this nervousness that comes
from the realization that these people probably know you a little better
than they should! (The anonymity of the blue screen fosters a false
sense of security sometimes.) But that nervousness almost always
dissolves into warm, comfortable conversations. It's still the
internet, and folks should use caution, especially in private
rendezvous. But based on my experience, I'll echo some advice Nanci
Griffith gave this mailing list one time, "Get out there and meet
people."

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Amy wondered who had the record for meeting the most NanciNettters.

Obviously the folks who have been to the NN meetings at Kerrville or RMFF
would have met each other in a fairly large group...and our Knoxville Blue
Moon Jam was fairly well attended...

But I've had the pleasure of meeting several Nanuits in individual meetings at
odd times and places, in New Jersey, Michigan, California, Florida, New York,
Canada. I've met over a dozen listers in these travel related (either my
travel or theirs) visits, not including the many folks we met in Knoxville (I
wouldn't even try to name all of those folks).

Married one of 'em, quasi-adopted another...

Funny thing, though...would you believe that every person I've met from this
list is someone I'd love to live next door to? Someone I wouldn't mind having
coffee with on a regular basis.

Good group of folks, these NanciNetters...might call 'em the nicest folks on
the internet!

Bill forgot to mention NN meeting in London at November the 29th 1998. That
was for the concerts at the Barbican.

The whole meeting is to be seen at http://fly.to/nanci and you can actually
listen to the concert there.

This was maybe not the biggest NanciNet meeting in the world, but certainly
the biggest in Europe with people from the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium,
the Netherlands and even one from the States.

And I'd like to thank Susan for imputting the info in such an easy to read
way!

One small mistake (thanks to John for pointing it out) which is down
to my cutting and pasting, it's Tom Pacheco, not Mark O'Connor who is
"every bit as good as Townes or Guy" and about whose album John thinks
"every home should have one"...I don't know what Mark O'Connor sounds
like, but we wouldn't want to mislead folks!

Anyone got an advance copy of the Wheeler album yet, Bill (Lavery) for
instance? I'd love to hear early opinions on this...

Also, anyone want to say anything about their holiday tape exchanges?

All the best

Robert (Pugsley)

Talked to Tom at Christmas. He has another two-CD recording coming out
soon. Also, if you hadn't already heard, will have two songs on The
Band's new one.

Mike Chesman is my god. :) (okay, my recording tape guru) his tape exchange
was simply ideal- different and not too off the beaten folk path, a lot of
Nanci stuff there would be no way I could ever track down...in simply one
word: awesome. And the songs he has chosen- in a really eerie way- have
definitely been helping with the saga here at home. So a thousand nanci-thank
yew's to Mr. Chesman!!

Now Playing: I finally bought Sand and Water by Beth Neilson Chapman: thanks
to mike I had the impetus I needed to buy it- I heard the all alone song and
ran to the nearest best buy....this tape is truly the gift that keeps on
giving!!

Does any one have any information on the Buddy Holly Reunion in Clear Lake,
IA. And or is any one thinking of going that way? Since it looks like
Nanci's only Iowa stop I thought that I might head that way. Thanks Kim

Subject: NN: Something to share (not really NN related)
   From: JRodriguez@arrowheadgrp.com

About three years ago, I met the man who was to change my life forever. He
introduced me to Nanci's music by playing OFSE late at night.

I later scraped together enough money to buy a used copy of the cassette only
to completely wear it out.

I made it through really rough times when we were apart with the help of
Nanci's music. I was bound and determined to get us to see Nanci live. We
made it to one of the LA concerts and, as a part of his
birthday present last year, we saw her in San Diego (Humphreys).

We're now engaged and, although Nanci did not bring us together, her music is
certainly woven into our relationship.

Thanks for listening!

I posted a message in early December after seeing the Amazing Rhythm Aces

Nanci and the BMO would do a tour.

Subject: NN: Nanci should cover...
   From: Paul Larsen (paul@davisnet.net>

I know that this subject has been hashed and rehashed again, but I have an
idea for one song on Nanci's symphonic album. She could cover Jim Croce's
"Photographs and Memories." It would be ideal because it's just Jim, his
guitar, and the strings, something that I suppose Nanci's next project is
about. I was thinking that she might do "Don't mess around with Jim," but
that probably wouldn't set well with the Viola section. (Just Kidding!)

   From: "Kathie Bargiel" (Kbarge@wans.net>

Hi to the Nanci Net from the town that just lost its greatest basketball
player to retirement.
On our local station WXRT, yesterday, they had a Marv Albert
commentary about Jordan retiring. At the end of the commentary the DJ played
Lucinda Williams' song, "I Can't Let Go." How appropriate. Chicago fans will
have to do without Michael. We will miss him.
Did you ever try to explain the word retirement to a 5 year old? I had
a kindergarten lesson on that today to explain to my students, many who wear
Jordan's shoes, why Michael Jordan was retiring from basketball. (He has
enough money to stay home everyday.) It was interesting to hear their
comments. Many thought he was going to play baseball, again. However, they
left knowing that he would not be playing basketball for "Da Bulls."
On a different note my Nanci Net friends will be happy to know that I
no longer will be betting that our team will beat their team in the
playoffs. Thanks again to those who lost, my CD collection was always the
happy winner.
No date yet for the wedding. We are still working on that.
Sad that Michael will not be playing for "DA BULLS," but still very
HAPPY to be in love again.
(I hope I didn't bore you with the Jordan stuff.)
Kathie :)
Favorite Jordan memory: When he did personal appearances for Nike back in
the mid 80's and he picked up my 7 year old son ( now 21) and sat him in
his lap to sign an autograph. I still have the picture.

Just a gut feeling, but I think Michael's retirement might be a little
like Nanci's. It's hard to quit something you dearly love.
