NanciNet Digest 1-18-99

Subject: NN: Country Music People; OVOR Video; Iris DeMent
   From: GH (ghgator@ibm.net>

Hi NNers,
On some list recently someone commented about breaking
the rule of one subject per post. . . since I'm a digest-subber
I'm breaking that rule too!

I have a copy of County Music People from May, 1993. Nanci
is on the cover and an interview inside about the release of
Other Voices, Other Rooms. There is also a two page article
about this new folk singer making her London debut, Iris
DeMent.

My VCR has been working fine so I put off buying a "stereo
VCR" until I found one onsale for less than $100. Well, today
I hooked up my new VCR and the stereo tape that I used to
check it out was Other Voices, Other Rooms. What a pleasure
to go back and watch that again.

Friday and Saturday night I was lucky enough to see Iris DeMent
in benefit concert for our community radio station, WMNF (Tampa).
Iris is one of the artists that 98% of our listeners are familiar with
thanks to a state senator that stopped our state funding a couple
of years ago because of her offensive lyrics in Wasteland of the Free.
Anyway, what a wonderful performer. Tonights show ranked as
one of the best that I have ever seen.

So this weekend was great-- I relived OVOR which also includes Iris,
I saw Iris twice and got her to sign, among other things, the Country
Music People article mentioned earlier. And Nanci is a big reason
how I found Iris to begin with.

Looking forward to more information about the new Nanci video....

Glen

Subject: NN: Hello from Tokyo !
   From: "stah-n" (stah-n@ma.kcom.ne.jp>

Hi,

I am a Nanci fan in Tokyo.

Today I've got a live CD of Nanci,
titled "Love Affairs in a Foreign Town" (cat. nr. NCI 016).
It sounds like soundboard recording, maybe dubbed from an analogue disk.
The sleeve only says "recorded during the little love affairs tour in 1988",
mentioning no details.

The songs contained are;

Long Star State Of Mind
Banks Of The Pontchartrain
I Knew Love
Looking For The Time
Once In A Very Blue Moon
The Ballad Of Robin Wintersmith
Listen To The Radio
Outbound Plane
There's A Light Beyond These Woods
Love Wore A Halo
>From A Distance
Ford Econoline

Would someone please tell the details of the show and the recording?

Shun-ichi

Subject: NN: Nanci and Dougie?
   From: "Tom Menefee" (menefeet@inet.att.co.kr>

I'm relatively new to the NN and am quite the novice as a "fan" - I mean, I
don't do this very well. As a high school kid in the 70's, I knew the first
2 lines to almost every song, but couldn't tell you who sang the song and
could only hum the remainder of the tune. Ok...ok...I was pretty strong
when the chorus would come back around, but not a "student" of the music
scene if you know what I mean. My head was just somewhere else I guess.
When I came into the Air Force 7 years ago, the doctors told me I have
high-frequency hearing loss and that that would most likely explain why I
missed some words in conversations - and a lot of words in recorded songs.
While there was no remedy, it was at least an explanation. Anyway, the NN
has educated me a lot about NG and many other artists, and I am happy for
the discovery. The above rambling is prelude to ask a question that may be
foolish - or at least uninformed (oh yeah, that's what a question is, isn't
it). Has Nanci ever recorded with Dougie Maclean, or had any interaction
with him. He is my favorite Celtic artist (granted, I know very little
about artists as I said above), and the emotional characteristics of his
music (or rather, the characteristics in me that his music stimulates) seems
quite similar to Nanci's. It's not unlike wishing two of your best friends
would "find each other." Anyway...any Dougie fans out there, and any info
about her and Nanci crossing paths?

Nashville for 18 May...

For all you Central Texas NNEtters, don't bother calling the Austin
Symphony box-office til late Feb/early March... They don't know when the
tickets will go on sale, but it won't be before then... But, the price
for the best seats will only be $30... Venue will be at Bass Concert

Happy New Year To All
One of the NPR Stations that I have the capability to pull in, is today
(Sunday 1-17-99) airing Part Two of an audio "MROS",at 1300 local time. If
you know NPR and travel about the country,or have moved, then you may
know, some stations air some programs at the same time nationwide, others may
adjust for the time zone, they are in, still others can do a Downlink from a
Satellite (squirt the bird) and broadcast it to there listeners in what
ever time slot they choose to do so. Also the information I have is that
this is a seven part series as compared to the information my local
fishwrap provides ,that the PBS series is a four part, hour long for each
episode series, so as always check for local listings, and airing dates MROS
on PBS is Wednesdays.
More later, Adios to all of you saddus out there in McDonalds Land .
P.S. to Poet(C. Myers)Muse How about another update on your Father ?

Be Safe out there and Polite to one another people, thanks for your time.

   From: "Zac Tullett" (Zac.Tullett@eclipse.co.uk>

John - thanks for pointing out the Jan/Feb mistake in my MOJO post - I too
wouldn't want to disappoint any Nanci fans!

As for the Nick Drake documentary, I'm not sure whether it'll air on BBC
America. I'll be glad to tape it for you James, but I would only be able to
record this in VHS - the usual transatlantic problem. Please contact me via
private e-mail (address at the bottom).

Adding to James' post - I'd also heartily recommend checking Nick Drake's
work out. He only recorded three albums in his lifetime, the first two
arranged with strong string sections, the third just Nick and his guitar,
and there's also a boxed set out there with an extra CD cobbled together
from various recordings made of Nick. Great tunes to learn for the guitar
players out there - superb inventive tunings as well. There's a CD available
called "Way to Blue - An Introduction to Nick Drake" which is probably the
best album for the uninitiated, and there's an article on Nick in the
FEBRUARY issue of MOJO as well! You can find Nick at CDNOW
http://www.cdnow.com/, along with RealAudio samples.

Take care,

Zac.

   From: James Brock (jbrock@westnet.com>

I am sure others here are familiar with Nick Drake's work, but if any of you
are not, I would strongly advise you to listen. Zac, I have access to BBC
America...any idea if the documentary will air here? Any chance of you taping
it? (Do the formats sync?) Fot those of you who don't know him, Drake was a
hauntingly gifted singer, lyricist and guitarist who died much too young.
Richard Thompson was in his orbit. Take a listen.

Subject: NN: Transatlantic Sessions
   From: Village Records (bill@villagerecords.com>

Hi all,
Thanks for all the queries regarding the Transatlantic Sessions. Below
is the response from the company in Scotland putting this out.
Basically, they are saying that we can't distribute this in the US and
will have to wait for the different US version to come later. This is
not on the schedule for February so March at the earliest. So, your
options are to get this directly from Scotland, wait for the US release
(cheaper no doubt). Or I will keep working them to see if they will let
me have a handful.

Thanks
Bill Lavery
Village Records
http://villagerecords.com/

"We don't have the rights for this product in North America. This is
held by Ricky Skaggs at Skaggs Family Records and we believe there is a
release due almost immediately from them to tie in with the shows on TV
over there. Their selection and mix will be a bit different, to suit
the US market, and although only one album is set in the first instance
they do have the options on others to follow."

NNs,
It sounds like the US version potentially could have different cuts if so
chosen by the U.S. Distributors. I don't know how the rest of you feel but
I rather like that idea and feel that most of us that want a copy of the
Iona release will be able to track down an import copy with time. It could
be encouraged to make the U.S. releases totally different so that we fans
could hear more of what was aired. That could mean getting to hear two or
more other cuts featuring Nanci that were skipped over on the Scottish
releases.

Mike
