First let me say hey to everyone. This is my first posting after lurking for
quite sometime, but I just had to respond to the Once in a Very Blue Moon
question.
I started listening to Nanci Griffith in 1985 after buying OIAVBM on vinyl
becoming an instant fan. Of course, I still have it. It was released in 1984.

Does anybody know if the shows Iris DeMent is doing on her current tour are
solo or with a band?

If you are looking for some lunchtime or bathroom reading, go out and buy
the March issue of "Sky & Telescope" magazine. There is a feature article
on the origin of the term "blue moon". It includes a listing of songs
that use the phrase, and Nanci is mentioned.

I will possibly post some snippets from the article tonight if I can steal
away to the computer.

BTW, there are two blue moons this year ("that's why its called a Blue
Year") January and March.

Hello fellow Nancinetters! I've been reading the posts for a couple of
months now but have yet to chime in. But now I thought I would ask if
there are any NN's in the Greensboro, NC area. I don't hear much about her
around these parts and sometimes I feel like I'm her only fan here!! I was
lucky enough to have my brother introduce me to her music about 8 years ago
& I've been in love ever since! I've been fortunate to see her one time in
Raleigh (now I just desperately want to see her more!). Also, I wanted to
see if anyone has heard anything about the Cry, Cry, Cry show in Charlotte
at the Great Aunt Stella Center and if so, is anyone going? I sure would
love to meet some of these wonderful people I've been reading about! You
guys aren't kidding when you say these are the nicest folks on the net!
And by the way, I was wondering how poetmuse's dad is doing? Haven't read
any updates lately!

I checked Dirty Linen web pages today, and Dirty Linen
no. 79 is now available as back-issue. No. 37 does
also contain Nanci articles, and is also available.

Subject: NN: Dougie McLean
   From: nmrs@freeway.net

Well, we are relatively new to the NanciNet, too. I have been a Nanci
fan for years and years. One day I saw a CD called "Shelter" which
features singer/songwriters (including our Nanci, of course) and among a
host of other greats, Dougie McLean. So of course I bought the CD and
have enjoyed it tremendously because it has introduced me to some people
I might never have noticed. Right after buying this CD we found out
Dougie was playing nearby and we went. He is not only a wonderful
songwriter but a very powerful performer who held us captive just with
his voice and his acoustic guitar! (We also got to see Cheryl Wheeler
last year; she was simply fantastic, too). I, too would be fascinated
by any collaboration between Dougie and Nanci.

However, my current favorite (first heard of in this very site) is Cry,
Cry, Cry. I just cannot get enough of this CD! I even heard "I Know
What Kind of Love This Is" on one of our local NPR stations (out of
Interlochen, Michigan) the other night. A special note: Dar Williams
also appears on the "Shelter" CD.

Anne who is up North in Michigan and appreciates this window to the
world!

Hi Anne . Thanks for the post.
We have friends in Midland ,Michigan.

Anyway here is the connection/s

1.A song of Dougie McLeans' "Caledonia" is featured on The Best of Dolores
Keane CD. Dolores of course toured with Nanci and others recently OV2 tour and
clearly they have much respect for each other. They did a cracking duet
together same tour "Never be the Sun" which is also featured on the same CD.
(Emmylou H duets on the CD) Dolores dedicated the song to Nanci on the show I
Saw.

2. Dougie McLean was definitely in the front row of a Nanci performance in
Glasgow a couple of years back at The Royal Concert Hall. Hey - they must know
one another

Agree it would be something to hear them tour or even record something
together. We can but hope!!

I have never heard of any Nanci/Dougie crossing of paths, though they
are certainly aware of one another--both have songs on the Woman's Heart
CDs. Dougie's Nashville connection is Kathy Mattea--he appears on at
least two of her albums including Good News and another, the name of
which I can't right now recall, on which they do Dougie's "Ready for the
Storm" and a Scottish-tinged version of "From a Distance," recorded at
Dougie's place in Scotland. Some PBS stations in the US have aired a
documentary program about the Mattea/MacLean musical connection, which
was very satisfying--just wish I'd had the VCR running for that one.

Hello Everyone!

I just joined the NN and am so glad to be able to communicate with other
people who enjoy her music. I thought I knew alot about Nanci Griffith's
music but I am finding there is alot I have to learn. I thought I read due
to her health she has delayed touring and that she was not going to relaese
a new CD after her OVOR2 CD. Is this true? Also, what videos has she
released besides, One Fare Summer Evening? I will appreciate any
information. Many may already know this, but I was just looking on the Kate
Wolf website and there is a tribute album called Treasures Left Behind
where Nanci G., Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent and Lucinda Williams sing Kate
Wolf songs.

Subject: NN: OROV & OV2
   From: "Max" (Max@scs.datanet.co.uk>

Firstly, a quick hello as this is my first posting to the list. It's very
wet and miserable today, here in Merry England oh, nevermind here goes...

I have to confess to being a new fan of Nanci and this genre of music, but
having fallen accidentally in, I'm now hopelessly in love with it all. Now
I'm trying to learn fast. In OV2 the lyrics include the year the song was
written but in OROV the year of origin is not included. I would be grateful
to hear from anybody who knows this information or where I can find it, as
I'm not familiar with most of the songwriters (yet !), and knowing the
dates/eras adds to my enjoyment a little more.

As a footnote, not directly Nanci related but I was in Poland over Xmas and
New Year. I took a couple of Nanci tapes with me including OROV to ensure I
didn't suffer any withdrawal symptoms !. By playing the tapes I was
surprised to discover that my Polish friends were familiar with the song
"Night Riders Lament", as it turns out, there is a quiz/light entertainment
show on Polish TV which quite regularly asks contestants to attempt the
Camp Cookie yodeling sequence. Which is quite a novel idea, and certainly
not something I expected to discover in Poland. Either that or British TV
is boring !!

Cheers,

Max

Max welcome to the list...I can't help you with anything but Vince
Bell's song, Woman of the Phoenix which was written in 1975. I do
remember Nanci requesting photos from us of Vince at a corresponding
time.

SPEAKING of Vince, I'll serve a little spam up for breakfast if you will
forgive me. His new CD, Texas Plates, just arrived (where is Martha
Stewart when you need decorating hints on how to cover 1000 books and a
1000 Cds?) Until a licensing agreement is completed it is only
available from his web site and live performances. So info, clips, etc
are below if anyone is interested.

Nanci content? Some of you may have heard Nanci perform Vince's song
that is on this new CD -- Last Dance at the Last Chance.

Thanks...I'm just so excited :-)

August 20, 1995. Lyons, CO Rocky Mountain Folk Festival, site of the very
first official Nanci-Net Convention, key of Eb, between "This Heart" and
"It's A Hard Life". Great 'line dancing' monologue preceeding.

Wowsa! Now that was an awesome performance!
