   From: Bill Peete (billpeet@cruzio.com>

Howdy Folks,

For each of the last four years, we've held a "Holiday Tape Exchange" that
turned out to be a lot of fun. If anyone is interested in doing the same
thing this year, you may participate by letting me know, and then making a
100 (or 90 if you prefer) minute tape of some of your favorite *NON* Nanci
tunes. For the high-tech folks with CD recorders, I think it would be okay
to substitute a cd for a tape.

If you'd like to participate this year, reply to this message, by December
10, 1999. When replying, be sure to change the address from:

	nanci@world.std.com

to:

	billpeet@cruzio.com

In other words, private e-mail, so's not to clutter up the list. A simple "I
want in" is sufficient. I will confirm your entry by replying with a simple
"ok". Don't fret too much if you don't get an immediate ok... between work
and upcoming Nanci concerts, my on-line time will be suffering, but be
patient. Thank yew kindly!

As in previous years, I will toss all the participants names into my Nanci
"Flyer" hat and will draw names to determine who gets who's tape. Witnesses
will be present. Within a few days, of December 10, I'll post one public
message that tells you who to send your tape to.

Holiday Cheers,

-bill "stayin' warm in his fine one year old jacket" peete

Subject: NN: Top Ten Lists - The Music of 1999
   Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 00:27:13 EST
   From: VickiStein@aol.com

God Bless Us, Everyone! And Hello!

1999 has been a very good year for new music. It's December First (at least
where I'm sittin'), and time to compile the Top Ten List! It'll be fun to
read the lists that come across the line, and I am here, ready, willing, and
I hope and trust, able, to tackle this task. If you would like to
participate, here are the guidelines:

1. All CDs must be released in 1999.
2. No more than 10 per list.
3. If you post your list to the NN, please be sure to copy me @ VickiStein
@aol.com. I've set up a separate folder to help in the compilation.
4. Deadline date is December 25, 1999. I'll do my best to compile the Top
Ten of all Top Tens by January 1, 2000. If, for some unforeseen reason, that
magical date eludes me, I'll let y'all know as soon as possible.
5. The person whose list most closely matches the composite list wins a free
CD of choice from the Top Ten of the Top Ten! And, if you win and you
already own all ten of the CD's listed, well then, we'll work with Shawn
(thanks, Shawn :) and have a tee-shirt sent to you! In the event of a tie,
I'll draw names.
6. For tabulation purposes, each song counts the same, whether you list it
as Number 1 or Number 10.
7. The CD earning the most top 10 nominations will be selected as the lists'
number 1, etc.

I'm new at this, so please be patient, forgive me if I've left anything out,
and do let me know so that I can take steps to remedy the situation. Thank
You.

Now that EST has crossed into the realm of December 2nd, I say, "Go for it,
Get at it!"

Peace,

Vicki (That's VickiStein@aol.com) Stein

Those of you who remember Nanci's open letter to Texas
critics may be interested learn that TEXAS MONTHLY has
announced various greatest Texans of the Century. For
greatest writer, J. Frank Dobie beat out, yes,
Katherine Anne Porter.

In other categories: Buddy Holly rock and roller,
T-Bone Walker guitarplayer, Lightnin' Hopkins
bluesman.

Showing they know more about music than literature.

Subject: NN: mca years
   Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 00:28:32 EST
   From: MK3449@aol.com

i have been lurking on this list for some months, and find myself now
needing to write. i have very much enjoyed all of the comments on the list,
especially the recommendations of singers/songs from the list (except perhaps
the grateful dead's version of "i know you rider". what was that about?).
i can't afford many cds, so when i recently had the option of getting a
cd from a cd club (whiCH shall remain nameless) i fretted over the various
nanci disks and finally choose the mca years retrospective, figuring it would
be a good over-view cd.
having received the cd, i believe it was a good choice. but more
importantly, i achieved a bit of an epiphany. while listening, i came to
"love at the five and dime" which i had never heard live before. following
the wonderful intro about all the woolworth's being the same all over the
world, and listening to this simple, sweet love song, i suddenly remembered wh
y i listen to music.
this is something i think i forget sometimes in these times of throwaway
songs, which flit around your head for a short while and then disappear
forever. here was a song which meant something, which could transport, both
emotionally and mentally, to somewhere i have maybe never been. with tears
in my eyes, i learned something new and remembered something old at the same
time.
sorry this got so long, and i hope others of you also experience these
things as you hear the music which wraps your soul in its warm embrace.
thanks for listening....

Having seen a few positive comments about BNC I thought it might be
acceptable to mention this here. BNC is playing at the Celtic Connections
shindig in Glasgow on Saturday January 15th at The Fruitmarket - Albion
Street. See http://www.grch.com for details.

Not listed as yet but pretty much confirmed is Janis Ian at the same venue
the following evening.

Enjoy

If any of the list members are in the L.A. area, there is a gig you
should not miss this coming Friday, 3rd December. Get yourselves to The
Mint and marvel at the excellence of Kevin Montgomery.

But a lot of Nanci fans will miss this because the anti-landmine concert is
on the third in LA with:

El Camino College, Torrance, CA
Steve, Emmy, Terry Allen, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Guy Clark,
     Nanci Griffith

So they will have tickets for this concert.

He's not lyin' Netters. So hit the L.A. Freeway (but be careful getting off
of it) for a bit of musical carpe diem. :)

I haven't sent many messages to the Nancinet before, and living in the UK I
don't really feel that I can contribute much worthwhile. I am however really
looking forward to Nanci playing at the Royal Albert Hall next May, and I
intent
to go twice to get enough memories to last me 'til the next time she passes by
this way.

The real reason for my note is that I want to go to Nashville next year (among
other sacred sites), and as I know none of my friends would be interested I was
wondering if any other UK Nancinetters would be interested in combining forces
and making the pilgrimage together. I would probably do it on my own if I have
to, but it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. If anyone's interested could you
e-mail by privately.

Jim

I was there for the performance mentioned below (though I don't remember it
as 1987, necessarily. I thought it was later.) Nanci opened for John Prine
and it was truly a magical night, particularly that performance of "From a
Distance". The post brought back a great memory, thanks.
