   From: ingaqotr@CTC.Net (Amy C. McKibbin)

Hi folks,

I'm not going to be able to make it to the Pittsburgh concert with Nanci
Griffith and Dar Williams on December 15th. I have a nice, new, shiny
fourth row ticket in circle 2 at Carnegie Hall there, which I would like to
sell to the first response I get for what I paid ($27.50) minus the cost of
priority mail shipping (so that I can get the ticket to you in time).
Please e-mail me if you are interested. Thanks!

Hi Folks ~

Now this is very interesting to me, Nanci in Sheffield...as my friend (me
travellin' companion), Bob, and I were just discussing last Friday the
possibility of booking a trip to the United Kingdom in 2000...
now, it's lookin' as if it should be in the Spring (like right around May
3rd??!!), so that we can see Nanci!

Tell me, would it be difficult for us to get tickets to such an event? Do
tickets to Nanci's overseas concerts sell out right away?

Please forgive my naivete, I have never travelled beyond the shores of North
America. In fact, a trip of this magnitude would be quite a departure for me,
as I'm partial to the mountains (love the Continental Divide!) and rivers of
the U.S.

Still, I have always, always dreamed of visiting the U.K. I am of English and
Scottish descent, and the rich history beckons me....

Well, we will see...I need to do some research on this topic (and I should
really get back to work...). However, if Nanci is performing, it'd make the
trip even more worthwhile....

Have a great one!

Dear Nanci-Nuts,

Does the line, "She had a husband on her bumper", figuratively refer to a
husband that is chasing her in another vehicle, as in tailgating? Or does it
refer to a husband stuck on the front bumper like a bug on a windshield?

Inquiring minds need to know.

Well, I giess you could read it either way. I always saw it as a rear
bumper kind of thing, kind of a double-meaning, both on her bumper, like,
following her from Salt Lake City to San Diego, trying to stop her and get
her to stay with him. Also metaphorically, on her bumper, like, never
giving her any freedom to live a life of her own when they were together,
kind of the same thing as building a golden cage around her.

Just a life-inexperienced college kid's opinion here,

Wow -- I always saw it as "on her bumper" like an animal after hunting,
driving along displaying the prize. Not that she'd literally done this, of
course, but that she had fought and won, and was driving away victoriously.

[I'm not a hunter, really. But the image works for me.]

Bill,

I assume it's figurative, but I've always pictured the husband hanging onto
the rear bumper, sometimes dragging the ground, sometimes flying behind the
van as the driver, pretending to be oblivious sings and quiets the "five
restless children."

I read "she had a husband on her bumper" figuratively, but I'm sure you could
view it literally, too. The "bumper" implies, to me, something that's behind
her but yet still attached to her, something in her past that she can't quite
shake, doesn't want to let go of...like maybe the fact that she loves her
husband in spite of his rambling, gambling, lying, and cheating...but her "salt
of the earth" common sense prompts her to go, in the best interest of her kids
and herself, and escape the "golden cage," relieving her of the Sturm und Drang
that epitomizes life with the "rounder."

And then, even at the end of the song, the line "She drives a Coupe DeVille,
but her heart still rides in that Ford Econoline," conveys to me that although
she's moved on, the attachment to the past is still strong, in spite of the
victory/freedom achieved.

And I must confess, my perception of this song reflects my own life
experiences. I loved a rounder-type once, and even though it is absolutely
over and has been for several years, I still occasionally find him attached at
the bumper when I glance in the rear view mirror. And I sigh, and just keep
moving forward, cuz I know to go back would be disastrous...

I always thought that she was tying him to the bumper with a big fat hemp
rope ( still alive and wriggling like a worm to get free) so that she could
ram the car realllly hard into the one in front and hurt him bbbbbaaaadddd.
Or she'd jsut continue to hit the san diego freeway, and because she was
doing sixty miles an hour she'd be scaring the s*** out of him, whilst
laughing insanely with her hands on the wheel and her foot on the floor. I
think i took the literal image somehow.

   From: James_Troiano@umit.maine.edu (James Troiano)

Hi folks: Her is my top almost ten for 1999:

1) Nanci Griffith: Dustbowl Symphony: the more I listen to it, the more
I love it. As always, Our hero's music far surpasses anyone else's.

2. Eliza Gilkyson: Misfits. I just got hold of this little gem and this
great singer-songwriter is little less etehreal and more hard-edge than
usual. Some marvelous songs and a great voice.

3. John Stewart and Darwin's Army. A great collection of originals and
oldies as John works with a band for the first time since the KIngston
Trio. His wife , Buffy Ford Stewart, like Nanci, is another voice of
the angels." Buffy adds a great deal the songs. She has been
gravely ill and all John Stewart fans have been pulling for her.

4 Folk Scene Collection Vol. 2. Best cuts from a LA radio show which
includes Nanci, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Eliza Gilkyson, amongst
others.

5. John Stewart: Live at McCabes: John is always great live and his
songs with the great Buffy are inspiring indeed.

6. Sounds of Wood and Steel: vol. 2 I just love hearing Nanci's "A
Year Down in New Orleans" as a vocal or instrumental.
The song actually inspired my wife and me to plan a trip to New
Orleans in the spring. Some very pleasant sounds for background music.

7. Lucy Kaplansky: Ten Year Night . Some great songwriting and vocals
by a former Nanci collaborator.

8. Melanie : Unchained Melanie. I bought this at a recent concert-am
not sure of actual release date. She has written some marvelous songs
and adds some new ones to old favorites.

While I can understand the pessimism, and though I don't normally consider
myself much of an optimist, I do think that this CAN work, if for no other
reason the vast majority of the people in Northern Ireland are sick of the
violence, death, and destruction. As much distrust as there may still be
peace, however uneasy, may be the only alternative. There will always be
problems with militants on both sides who want no compromise, but maybe, just
maybe, the majority can make this thing work.

It may be difficult to envision a fully peaceful Northern Ireland, but 15
year ago who would have thought that we'd see Nelson Mandela not only free
but President of an apartheid free South Africa, the Berlin Wall demolished,
and the Isrealis and Palestinians talking to one another? It won't be easy,
but miracles do happen.

I just saw a new book published by ACL, 2000 - "Austin City Limits, 25 Years

of all the various performers over the years, including, of course, Nanci.
Has a picture from her debut in her yellow dress and red shoes. $35 (hc) if
anyone is interested. Might make a good holiday gift for your friends and

Hello Robert,

Some said on the list about the top tens that he or she had heard from Bill
that the one that did the counting the last years had left the the list and
not seeing any messges from you I assumed that it was you. But you had
always such a nice list with rules and so on.

I checked this afternoon the site of the LSO and the RAH and couldn't find
anything about concerts.

Hey Robert--

We *are* in the process of putting together and posting top ten lists
now. The gracious Ms. Vicki Stein has agreed to tabulate the results
this year. She posted some contest information and guidelines on
December 2. Some of us have already posted lists. There's been some
recent discussion about extending the deadline a little so I think
that's why lists are slow coming in. Even though I usually wait until
closer to the end of December to post, I've found in the past 4 or 5
years of doing this that it takes me a month or more to decide if I
really like an album. Also, as someone mentioned, I like to use the
list's suggestions in my Christmas shopping. But I'm sure everyone will
be cool with whatever Vicki decides. I'm also hoping that many people
participate, and our list manager doesn't go crazy in the process!

Warm Regards,
-Shawn
