Subject: NN: Good things and apologies
Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 23:19:36 -0500
From: Rob Schrull (RSchrull@gbla.com>
Hi Folks.
First, my apologies for not getting back the few folks that expressed an
interest in getting together before Nanci's gig the other night in NYC.
I've been so completely engaged in working (nationwide it seems) that it
was almost not possible for me to even get there myself.
I was surprised, because I expected it to be like any other gig, but it was
indeed a true benefit concert, and while I don't know for sure, I don't
think it was anything for which you could go buy a ticket. It was at the
Whitney Museum and it was a very small croud of folks (I think perhaps
paying lots....who knows), to benefit the Museum. I think the corner in
which Nanci, James and Ron where playing was dang near as small as Anderson
Fair.
Anyway, we had a nice lunch, dinner and special time with James, and a good
time also with the rest of the gang at the venue. I really can't say it was
especially nice to visit with any of them over another, as we've missed
them all so much lately. Bruce was busy tuning guitars and being his usual
kind self. Ron and I got a lot of time to chat and share war stories.
Nanci was up..in good spirit. Kirsty and Meg especially liked her dress.
We had some nice moments to visit also. Burt Stein of Gold Mountain was
there. We don't get to see Burt often, but each time, he's been very kind
and thoughtful. Odetta was there, and she was so sweet and kind to all and
particularly to Kirsty and Meg. She's a sweetheart, who loves to give hugs
and a kiss for a hello or goodbye. Anyway, she won my heart. She told me
that there is good energy in the north, and that she'd love to come back to
Brattleboro to sing. I'll have to figure a way to make that a reality.
Frank Christian was there also, and it was nice to get to chat a bit more
then I have in the past with him. We talked about some old Nancinetters
we both in common knew whilst and for a while after he was travelling with
the gang in Great Britain. Got to meet Nanci's new Tour Manager Phil. He
could not have been more accommodating, including insisting we travel with
them to and from the gig and hotel in the van. We joked and called him
"10", being that Nanci's previous manager was "Nineyear".
Anyway, being that I had to get the girls back to Vermont and school by the
next morning, we could only stay into a few songs of the performance.
However, when the gang was on and the music was filling the air, it was
really hard for the three of us to leave. It wasn't so much that we enjoy
the music, albiet true that we do, we have heard it so many times before.
It was because it captured all three of us, perhaps each in our separate
ways, but also in some ways in common, and reminded us so much of that
wonderful year that we spent so much time with them. I don't know for
sure, but I suspect it also captured Kirsty in a special way that neither
Meg or I have experienced. Kirsty onced shared with me that she felt alive
when she performed with Nanci. She basically shared that performing was to
her a very fulfilling experience. I swear in looking at her last night as
she watched and listened, I could observe her remembering, perhaps even
feeling that feeling as she watched her friend perform.
Anyway...it was a very special time for all, with the girls snoring away in
the car up the west side highway, before we even got past the George
Washington Bridge!
Kindest regards and a great holiday season!
Rob

From: "Pollock, Stuart (S.J.)" (spolloc2@ford.com>
Hi NN'ers
Just to confirm the Ramblin' Boy by Tom Paxton thread......Was definitely
written by Tom.
A good purchase that covers most of Tom's years (and there are many of them)
would be "Live for the Record". I like this album 'cos I like it live but
there is another compilation more recently released, "I Can't Help But
Wonder Where I'm Bound" that has most of what you would want plus Forest
Lawn and Jimmy Newman, two Paxton classic's IMHO. I bought the live CD at a
recent London show but CDNow are listing it at fewer dollars than I would
pay pounds sterling, bah humbug.
Nanci content...well she is quoted (or nearly quoted in my case) as saying
"I think we are born singing Tom Paxton songs".
Have a good holiday season and for my fellow IT/MIS/Computing brethren, Keep
Your Heads Down.

As an Aussie (now living in UK), along with Nanci, the other musician I follow
is Paul Kelly. I was pleasantly surprised to see a song (Cradle of Love) of his
on Kelly Willis's album "What I Deserve". Even more pleased to see Chuck
Prophet on playing on the album (been a Green on Red fan for a long time).
I was wondering if anyone else out there is familar with Paul Kelly as I've
never heard anyone mention his, or Chuck's name on the net.

Thanks, Shawn, great description. And to that, if I may, I'd like to add:
"one who is self-indulgent and spends his/her resources (whatever those may
be) foolishly."
Which pretty much speaks to the "gambler" reference, as well.
Hope everyone had a fine weekend. I've been staring at and contemplating the
7' lopsided Blue Spruce in my living room, adorned with lights, tinsel, and
relics of my family history. It's the Leaning Tower of "Tree-sa" ~ but hey,
my daughter and I sawed it down, somehow harnessed (thank God for Bungie
cords...the next best invention since duct tape) it into the trunk of my
Camry (which will never be the same now that it has been christened with
bark, branches, and pine needles, although it will smell "winter fresh" from
here on out), hauled it into the house and set it up, and we did our best,
and so, I'm leaning toward the thought that it's the spirit that the tree
exudes, not the imperfection of its owners..., and so, with that thought,
"Happy Holidays!"
Free thoughts of gambling lead me to this...darned if those Lions didn't do
it again to themselves! Just once, I'd like to see them really win big. I
believe that they won the World Championship in 1953 and haven't come close
since. However, coming from a state that proudly houses the Pistons, the Red
Wings, the Tigers, U of M, and MSU, I suppose I should be grateful. It's
just that I enjoy football, and 46 years is a long time for a pro team to,
well, you know....
Like Tom Petty says, "Even the losers get lucky sometimes."
And, one final comment, in keeping with this holiday spirit, our State Song,
"Michigan My Michigan" is sung to the tune of "O Tannenbaum..."
I will spare you all the rest of my rambunctious mind.
Peace, as always,

In this case, all the bars and nightspots in Salt
Lake City. I've never been to SLC but I never
imnagine it as a hotbed of sin. So, is a Salt Lake
City rounder particularly depraved as he has to work
so much harder at it or only mildly depraved as it
doesn't take much there to be considered a rounder. I
mean, even I might be considered a rounderin SLC
whereas here in New Orleans everybody knows I'm as
mild as milk.

Maybe there's not so much vice, but that with the lax bigamy laws, there

Hi NanciNetters,
I was reading the SEC mailings and it brought to mind the first time or two
that I heard Ms. Campbell out in Californie. Probably the most memorable was
the very First Annual Bluegrass Festival at Scotts Valley. A benefit for Cystic
Fibrosis on the 9th of October 1988. As I remember it, It was a fine day and
the music was great though the turn out was probably not as large as the
organizers had wanted. I had heard SEC at the shows in Grass Valley and the
Strawberry Festival and loved the music. So I was somewhat familiar with her
music. At Scotts Valley I purchased a tape, "Sarah Elizabeth Campbell - LIVE"
which I was lucky enough to have the liner signed. the inscription reads "Thanx
for the support." My way of thinkin, if you get a chance to support her and her
music by seeing her live you should do yourself the favor and treat yourself to
the experience.

Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 19:35:19 EST
From: Rocalittl@aol.com
Hey Gang,
Here's my faves for 1999, in no particular order:
1. Tom Petty & Heartbreakers- Echo. One of the strongest albums of Tom's
career, with some stellar songwriting and absolutely killer playing from the
second best backing band around :)
2. Richard Thompson- Mock Tudor- another career highlight from Sir Richard.
Listen to this man's genius guitar work, combined with an uncanny ability to
turn a witty phrase. DO NOT miss a live show if he heads your way.
3. Beth Orton- Central Reservation- a gorgeous, ethereal record from a major
new talent on the scene...
4. Julie Miller- Broken Things- this one has been in heavy rotation on my
disc player since its' release. What beautiful songwriting.
5. Emmylou Harris/ Linda Ronstadt- Western Wall- do harmonies get any better
than this? These ladies picked some great songs to cover.
6. Kelly Willis- What I Deserve- finally, Kelly pulls it altogether and
simply puts out a brilliant release. Great live show too.
7. Lucy Kaplansky- 10 Year Night- such a wonderful CD from the best
songwriter in Cry Cry Cry. The title track is so strong, but the rest of the
disc really shines too.
8.Various Artists- Return Of The Grievous Angel- a loving, touching tribute
to Gram that is dominated by strong performances by all involved.
9. Kim Richey- Glimmer- a new direction for Kim that will certainly bring
many new fans to the fold who appreciate her courage to branch out
successfully.
10. Nanci Griffith- DBS- Nanci tries a new twist on old faves and throws in
some great new songs as well. Her strong, sure vocals really are a highlight.
And not to be missed...
11. Kelly Joe Phelps- Shine Eyed Mister Zen- fabulous acoustic blues paired
with strong songwriting makes for a great CD.
12. Bruce Cockburn- Breakfast In New Orleans, Dinner In Timbuktu- sweet
guitar and and vocals from a personal fave.
13.Gomez- Liquid Skin- what a tremendous sophmore release from an up and
coming band. Love the lead singer's voice.
Have a wonderful holiday season.

Hey to all the rounders, ramblers, gamblers, gazers and wailers,
All appropriate holiday greetings and wishes for whatever your hearts desire.
Since I'm so lucky as to be spending the next little bit in the vastness of
the Texas hill country, I'm going to go ahead and post this now, even though
I hope it changes somewhat after the holidays :)
Dustbowl Symphony -- Nanci
Far Cry From Dead -- Townes Van Zandt
Cold Dog Soup -- Guy Clark
Live From Texas -- Lyle Lovett (I love live and I love Lyle; Lyle could sing
the periodic table of elements and it would be fine with me)
Long Walk Back -- Junior Brown
That's it for the new ones; mostly I'm like my good Georgia Tech buddy Steve
Robertson and spend time digging through the used CD bin, so I stay behind on
new stuff...
Everyone be safe...

Looking Forward-Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young. This record has received lukewarm
reviews but it resonates strongly for me. Songs for faith and hope. In 1969
they sang we can change the world, in 1999 it's we can change our attitude
toward the world.
The Strange Remain-The Other Ones. This live 2CD is culled from performances
from their summer 98 tour. Great improvisations and inspirational playing bring
back the magic of a Grateful Dead show.
What I Deserve-Kelly Willis. I can sit and listen to this record all day and
never notice the time passing. Wonderfully produced showcasing her smokey
vocals.
Broken Things-Julie Miller- a great selection of songs from one of the premier
songwriters of the times.
Dust Bowl Symphony-Nanci Griffith-Not much to say about this-yes, we'd like new
stuff but she reinvents herself with this one taking things to another level.
Back on Top-Van Morrison-One of the great songwriters of the milennium
continues his craft with a nod towards his early mid 70's R&B but there's a bit
of all his styles here and "When the leaves come falling down" is one of his
best.
Cruel Moon-Buddy Miller. Buddy may be the best country singer out there. If
there were any justice in this world his rendition of "Love Match", and cover
of Gene Pitney's monumental "I'm gonna be strong" would be played in heavy
rotation on every country radio station out there.
Return of the Grievous Angel-Tribute to Gram Parsons-the only thing that
doesn't work is Beck and emmyLou Harris's cover of Sin City.
Western walls-The Tuscon sessions-Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt Whenever
these two get together beautiful music results.
So Many Roads-5CD Grateful Dead Boxset that'll be under the tree-haven't heard
it yet but don't have to. I guess this would qualify as a reissue but it's new
for 1999.
Best song of the year-Heartland-CSNY
Best film of the year-American Beauty

From: VickiStein@aol.com
Hi to all ~
I'm compiling my "Top Ten List," and I have a question for those who have
been around this list for a while:
I really enjoy Mozart's opera "Cosi Fan Tutte," (my pop/alternative mind
wants to say "Cosi Fan Tutti Fruitti," as written by Squeeze back 1985 or
so...BUT just as one of my silly soliquoys, not to be taken seriously), as
directed by Rene' Jacobs, released in March. My question is, since this was
composed in 1789, I wondered if it would be considered a legitimate Top Ten
selection? I am thinking probably not...but it doesn't hurt to ask. Since
I'm compiling the lists, and my list is kind of different from the rest of
yours, and since I can't "win" this contest anyway, this question is not an
issue, but I did wonder if it would be worth mentioning....
Also, for you musicians out there, and there are several on the list, I
wanted to let you know of the great folk music festivals that happen in
Michigan. There is Bliss Fest, which is wonderful, the weekend following the
Fourth of July. Bliss is located somewhere in the neighborhood of Cross
Village, which is about a half an hour from the Mackinac Bridge (yeh...WAY up
there), okay, hold up your right hand, palm toward you, and plunk your finger
at the top of your middle finger....kind of gives you an idea...). Bliss is
a fun, classy, and very organized festival. Last Summer (1999), Richie
Havens headlined in the pouring rain, and he was unbelievable. Kept me out,
drenched and glowing, until 1:00 AM. Bliss hosts a lot of folk music and a
variety of world music. Cool main stage. Camping in a field, under a
pristine northern Michigan sky. I don't know this to be so, but they may
still be taking applications for performers at Bliss 2000. If you are
interested in Bliss, contact info follows:
P.O. Box 441, Harbor Springs, MI 49740
Phone: 231.526.2815 or 231.348.2815
E-Mail: jim@blissfest.org
Web site: www.blissfest.org
Also, the weekend following is Hiawatha Music Fest, in Marquette, MI (home of
my alma mater, Northern Michigan University). Hiawatha is in the Upper
Peninsula, that other, but beautiful, part of Michigan. I'm kinda partial to
Hiawatha, for obvious reasons. It is held at Tourist Park, which is a
beautiful county park at the edge of the Dead River Basin in Marquette
County. The Hiawatha main stage is housed within many enormous evergreens
and a variety of deciduous trees. It is full-on gorgeous. The park is a
mile from Lake Superior and the renowned Presque Isle Park (you have to see
Presque Isle Park to believe it, it is so beautiful). But I digress. A
couple of years ago, I had the privilege of seeing and hearing Eileen Ivers
and Seamus Egan at Hiawatha. Imagine that fiddle playing within the ambiance
of a starlit sky, under virgin trees. It was one of the few best concerts,
if not the BEST concert, I have ever experienced. So pure. Hiawatha can be
contacted at:
Hiawatha Music Co-op, P.O. Box 414, Maquette, MI 49855. Phone: (906)
226-8575
E-mail: hiawatha@portup.com. Website: www.portup.com/~hiawatha
And of course, we also host Wheatland, located in Remus, MI. Wheatland is
the most popular folk music festival, and it is located in the mid-lower
section of the lower peninsula. North of Grand Rapids. Wheatland usually
hosts 15,000 or so people, and is quite the party. Wheatland is probably my
least favorite of the three, (forgive me, if there are Wheatland fans out
there, I just prefer the more intimate base Hiawatha and Bliss offer) but it
does host a great variety of artists and is well organized. Wheatland offers
a more adult atmosphere, Bliss and Hiawatha offer more of a family
atmosphere....depends on what you want. Wheatland is great fun, and many
great artists have played there. If you want to reach Wheatland:

PO Box 22 · Remus, MI 49340
Phone (517) 967-8879 · Fax (517) 967-8562

That's all for now, but if anyone wants to be heard in Michigan, these fests
are the places to go!
Peace,
Vicki

Oh include it, what the heck. It's supposed to be fun and it sure ain't
brain surgery so precision isn't exactly a mandate. For the record,
some of the songs on the albums on my list were written over a hundred
years ago. I noticed that with some other lists too. In fact, didn't our
Nanci include some oldies but goodies on OV2? Fresh attitudes and
innovative interpretations by new artists make those old songs sound
spanking new in 1999.
On another note, thanks very much to jessiev@azstarnet.com (sorry, I
don't know your real name) for the information about the full moon on

Incorrect. While going through some old tapes this weekend I found I still have
it, along with the recent Letterman and Leno appearances.
If somebody would like this tape to copy ( I don't have any copying
equipment myself), please E-mail me privately, not the whole list. If
there's enough interest maybe somebody could make extra copies and send
them.
Again, please reply backchannel.

Then I will share, if I may, the following.
Full Moon - Winter Solstice
Science: Astronomical Notes
This year will be the first full moon to occur on the winter solstice,
Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter. Since a full moon
on the winter solstice occured in conjunction with a lunar perigee
(point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth) The moon will
appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's
elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth) since the Earth is
also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year
than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger
making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the
Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming. If
the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is
believed that even car headlights will be superflous.
On December 21st. 1866 the Lakota Sioux took advantage of this
combination of occurances and staged a devestating retaliatory
ambush on soldiers in the Wyoming Territory.
In laymen's terms it will be a super bright full moon, much more
than the usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years!
Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendents 100 or so
years from now will see this again.
I'm excited, hope someone else might find this interesting!
Remember this will happen December 22, 1999.....
