Dear nanci-netters

Do any of you have the James Hooker solo C.D.? If so
how is it? Is it worth having? Also, do any of you
have "Sounds of Wood and Steel" and/or "Sounds of Wood and Steel 2"?
What can you tell me about them. I know Nanci does a song on the
second one. Thanks for
your help.

Sorry, I missed this first time around. I purchased "Sea Prayers and
Whispers" over a year ago and enjoy it very much. It is not "The Amazing
Rhythm Aces", nor is it "Nanci Griffith'ish". It is very soothing,
thoughtful, at times powerful, piano symbionically linked with the sounds
of the planet. Well worth it in my humble opinion.

The CD, "Sea Prayers and Whispers," is rich and full, with more of a Windham
Hill kind of sound than a Rhythm Aces groove. If solid, absolutely beautiful
piano playing is something you treasure, this is a CD you should own. Indeed,
you may order a copy at the following URL:

I liked the album so much I bought 12 more copies and gave them away
as gifts. It's an instumental album: no singing. The compositions
are beautiful.

I just auditioned the vol 2 and have to say overall I am not impressed.
I certainly wouldn't purchase the disc for my own collection. Nanci's
song is good, as is Rodney Crowell's and I will probably play both of
those cuts on the air but will forget the others. I'm not saying it's
bad, just lackluster. That's in my own humble opinion of course.

Subject: NN: About CD's
   From: Virginia (ginrosej@bellsouth.net>

I went to Best Buy the other day to buy some new software, and of course
had to look at the CD's before leaving. There it was -- "Sounds of Wood &
Steel 2". On impulse, I put it in my basket. When I got home and checked
my sales slip, I discovered that the checker had only charged me $9.99 for
the $29.99 program, so I got the CD free. I haven't had a chance to listen
to it in it's entirety, but I like most of what I have heard. Of course
there are some songs I don't like, but it's rare to like every track on any
CD. Oh blasphemy, there are even some songs on some of Nanci's CD's that I
skip over! However, on this one, the first track, Nanci's "Year Down In New
Orleans", is flawless.

Last week I checked The NanciNet Top 10 at Sue Peete's site, and purchased
two of the three top ten I didn't already have through Sue's Amazon.com
link. It felt good to be able to get something I intended to buy anyway,
and help a great cause too. While at Sue's site, I checked out her Music By
Candlelight page, http://gate.cruzio.com/~billpeet/MusicByCandlelight/ .
Here one can purchase used (and sometimes new) CD's, and since these CD's
are donated, 100% of the cost of the CD goes to raise funds to help defray
Maggie's (Mary Margaret's) transplant-related expenses. There were TWO
brand new, never opened, James Hooker's Sea Prayers And Whispers CDs for
$7.00 each. Now there may be some out there who don't like soft, soothing,
piano music, but I'm not one. I liked this CD so much when I bought it last
year, that I bought two more to give as Christmas gifts. Also on the list
were three of Nanci's -- "Little Love Affairs", "Once In A Very Blue Moon",
and "Storms". I didn't buy these since I already had them, but I did find
Beth Neilsen Chapman's "Sand and Water", and Mary Black's "Shine". They're
gone now. I bought them. Happy CD shopping, everyone!

Hugs,
Gin

Subject: NN: Gillian and David
   From: "Charlie Macdonald" (charlie.macdonald@virgin.net>

Hi Folks,

Last night, I went to see Gillian Welch and David Rawlings perform at the
Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow - they were wonderful! I was immediately
struck by how cool Gillian was, completely in control and very relaxed. I
was also knocked out by the enthusiasm and energy of David Rawlings -
amazing to watch. If the list members on this side on the pond, who haven't
already bought tickets, get a chance to see them on their current European
tour (this was the second date), please go - spare no expense!

Gillian and David were only on stage for just over an hour as they were
sharing the bill with the Hothouse Flowers (we didn't wait for their set) -
the concert being part of Glasgow's, very loose, Celtic Connections
festival.

The set list and the between song chat, that I can remember, was as follows:

1. Tear My Stillhouse Down. David to the sound desk " I never thought I'd
ever hear myself say this, but could you inch my guitar down, just a hair".

2. Pretty Roses (?). I didn't recognise this song - may be new.

3. Rock Of Ages.

4. By The Mark. Gillian: "This was the first gospel song I ever wrote, it's
from the blood and guts variety"

5. Orphan Girl

6. My Morphine. Gillian mentioned that they were asked to play this song at
the Jimmie Rodgers tribute at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland,
Ohio. Gillian: "This song features the slowest yodel you will ever hear".
David joked: "It also explores that strange connection between yodelling and
drug addiction"

7. Annabelle. Gillian: "Faster than the last one, but much sadder" . David:
"Just the way we like them"

8. Diamond Joe(?). Another I hadn't heard, featuring David Rawlings on
vocal.

9. Miners Refrain. Gillian: " I've never been a miner, but I know how to
pick up a piece of coal and throw it in a bucket"

10. Acony Bell. An audience request.

11. Caleb Meyer. Gillian: " Glasgow, you have been such wonderful audience
that we thought we would leave you with a song about killing"

Best Wishes,

Charlie "Johnny on the spot" Macdonald

Yes, I think that's the song. Dave did it in Knoxville too.
It's been around a while, recorded by Dylan, Don Edwards...
Best version--Ramblin' Jack Elliot. Thanks for posting the
set list Charlie.

Just a quick aside to the folks in England. The Freight
Hoppers are coming your way in April.

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

   From: JhnCWard@aol.com

Rare `blue moon' coming twice in 3 months
The blue moons are coming.
The first can be seen Sunday night, the second on March 31.

Neither will be blue, of course, but when two full moons occur in one
month, the second has come to be called a blue moon.

Subject: NN: New music
   From: Bill Page (bpage@scctel.com>

Hey folks,

One of the "other" singers many of us NanciNuts enjoy is Cheryl Wheeler. Her
new CD, "Sylvia Hotel," was due to be released yesterday. If you don't get it,
you'll be sorry.

And as was mentioned earlier, an excellent way to get good music is through
the CandleList, at:
        http://www.cruzio.com/~billpeet/MusicByCandlelight

CDs and other items that can be ordered that that site have been donated
(including many donations from folks on the NN), and proceeds from the sales
go toward helping Margaret Mary Heenie (THE "Mary Margaret") offset the cost
of her recent transplant and ongoing recovery.

There is also a link to Amazon.com through the CandleList. Purchases through
that link also help Maggie's cause.

Subject: NN: Hootnannies & Glen Yarborough
   From: nmrs@freeway.net

Wow. A real trip down memory lane! When I was a junior in high school
I went to a hootenanny that featured Glen Yarborough. It took place
the day after JFK was shot and it had been hotly debated whether it
should go on or not. Now, I really liked Glen Yarborough at that time
(he'd been with the Limelighters) and was secretly glad the show went
on. This was my first experience hearing folk music live.
I really can't remember what anyone sang; I am pretty sure no one sang
Wimoweh that night, although Turn Around might have been included. I am
sorry I don't have Nanci's music memory to recall all these facts! I
guess that's why I love her book; she's done all the remembering for me!

Anne
