Subject: NN: Sam Pacetti
From: Maryl Neff (maryl@songs.com>
Hello Nners,
Just skimmed the new Nnet digest and saw Bill's note about Sam Pacetti. I
saw Sam 2 years ago at Folk Alliance in Toronto as he was blowing everyone
away. He's in his 20s (25-27?). He's from St. Augustine, Fl, and studied
with guitar-great Gamble Rogers. It's reported that when Gamble died, Sam
played at the funeral because he was the only person around who COULD play
one of Gamble's songs that they (whoever "they" are) wanted to have played.
Sam was "discovered" by Andrew Calhoun at Waterbug when Andrew was judging
the South Florida Folk Festival's songwriting (new artist?) competition a
couple of years ago. He (Sam) participated in the Falcon Ridge Folk
Festival's emerging artist competition this past summer. He truly is an
AMAZING guitarist. I believe he was at Folk Alliance last year in Memphis
and likely will be in Albuquerque end of Feb. if anyone's planning to be
there.

Hi guys. I need a little advice (again). I'm very interested in purchasing
some acoustic guitar albums, and don't have a clue. Something along the
lines of the Linsey Buckingham "Landslide" solo sound. It just captivates me
(beautiful acoutic guitar music, that is) and I'd like to know where to
begin. THANKS!!!!!

Dear Lorrie and list --
For acoustic guitar music, I'd start with John Fahey, Bert Jansch, Leo Kottke
... or maybe some collections of different players on Takoma or Alligator.
Happy listening.

And don't forget Martin Simpson, especially Leaves of Life, which is all
instrumental, including some slide. For more slide, besides the inimitable
Ry Cooder, there's also David Lindley (esp. with Hani Nasar).... and one
of the record companies has put out a series of four CD's called something
like "Everybody's Crazy about Slide". Let me check.... Yeah, it's
Rykodisc. I picked up these samplers at Folk Alliance in Toronto a couple
of years ago. Other names: Sonny Landreth, Amos Garrett, Bob Brozman, Rory
Block, and there are women who sing and slide too: Bonnie Raitt, Patti
Larkin...

Lorrie and everyone -
If anyone mentions acoustic guitar music then I've just got to recommend
John Renbourn. He played with Bert Jansch and Pentangle in the 60's, and
also with various other luminaries including Stefan Grossman.
He's one of the most talented guitar players there is (ever will be), but
he's not just technically brilliant - he really gets the music across to
you. I was lucky enough to see him play to an audience of about 150 at a
local hall in Devon (UK) this weekend, and he's still on top form.
He plays a great mix of English and American folk tunes, blues, Celtic
music, lute music, gospel, you-name-it-he-has-played-it.
I REALLY recommend checking this guy out, if you like that kind of thing.
Take care,
Zac

Subject: NN: More Videos
From: "Steve Robertson" (stever@mindspring.com>
I agree with Mike that we need more of Nanci on video. There are times when
you want to listen to a CD with your eyes closed and let the music create
mental images. But I usually prefer the combination of high-quality video
with a stereo soundtrack.
The real crime is the restrictive contracts that are holding hostage a lot
of existing video material. I'm sure we would all gladly pay a high price
for DVDs containing all of Nanci's appearances on ACL- or all her music
videos (the short form ones played on CMT)-or similar collections from a
long list of other artists.

Hi everyone,
did anyone in the St Louis area note that Iris DeMent is coming to Blueberry
hill on Friday the 12th? I am going to go but since I am new in town I am
going to be there all on my lonesome so I was wondering if anyone else will be
there. I'll buy you a beer if you will let me sit at your table!!!! The show
is only 15 bucks which sounds to this previously gouged ex east coaster like
an incredible deal,
happy blue moon to all........... Gordon
ps. email me privately if you are going. I will wear a carnation in my lapel.

Subject: NN: Head's Up!
From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>
Hey Y'all,
A few years back Prince wrote a song that goes, "Tonight we're gonna
party like it's 1999," I think many of our favorite musicians were
listening! The year is here and the party is on. My first "sure to
make top-ten" album is just out on Rounder. It's called "Heart of a
Singer" and features a new trio with some familiar names, Carol
Elizabeth Jones, Hazel Dickens, and Ginny Hawker. There's an old-time,
sometimes bluegrass flavor to this collection of mostly original
acoustic masterpieces. Pete Kennedy lends his guitar talent to the album
which was recorded as a celebration of high harmony vocals. These ladies
represent three generations of Appalachian singing and songwriting.
Listening to their voices blend puts me in hillbilly heaven.
My most anticipated album this year isn't due until February 23, but has
now been released in promotional format. It's Steve Earle's "The
Mountain." I've heard six or seven cuts and I can't wait to hike the
rest of Steve's original trails though Bill Monroe's fields of
bluegrass. He is backed by Del McCoury's band, a group which recently
took nearly all the trophies at the International Bluegrass Music
Awards. Steve calls this album "high risk, low tech bluegrass - one
mike, no shit." He continues, "My primary motive in writing these songs
was... immortality. I wanted to write at least one song that would be
performed ... at every bluegrass festival in the world." The
bad-toothed murder ballad "Carrie Brown," or "Dixieland," inspired by
Michael Shaara's _The Killer Angels_, might just elevate him to that
lofty goal. Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent, and Sam Bush
lend harmony vocals along the way and the album peaks with the title
track which Steve calls "one of the best songs I've ever written." "The
Mountain" just might represent the pinnacle of Steve Earle's musical
genius.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

From: GV (gvallest@online.no>
There's a new Tom Russel CD out, 'The Man From God Knows Where'.
It is issued by the Norwegian label 'Kirkelig Kulturverksted',
and contains 25 songs plus one instrumental. Mostly songs
written and performed by himself, but also songs performed
by Iris DeMent, Dolores Keane, Dave Van Ronk and the Norwegians
Kari Bremnes and Sondre Bratland. Russel calls this a 'folk opera',
and the story about 'the american primitive man'. I have not heard
the CD (yet), I just found out about it about in the newspapers today.

Thank you, Jean-Paul. You are the first person on this list who has shared my
interest for Nanci and Liz Phair. I not sure Liz has the pipes to cover much
of Nanci's work. Maybe some stuff from Flyer like "Fragile" or "Talk to Me
While I'm Listening". I would love to hear Nanci cover some of Liz's songs.
Maybe Johnny Feelgood, Divorce Song, Jealously or Polyester Bride. Could
covers of songs such as these be expression of a dark side to Nanci we have
never seen?

Dear Gin-
Thanks for your e-mail. Lee Satterfirld is too good
not to be heard! What if everyone of the nanci-netters
flooded a couple of record companies with requests for
their funding a Lee Satterfirld CD? Two possibilities
Nanci's company Elektra at webmaster{elektra}@elekra.com or
http.//www.rounder.com/rounder/feedback.html
What do you think? Worth a try?

Subject: NN: correct e-mail addresses
From: Bob Riegner (rg48@yahoo.com>
Dear Netters
Just me again--the correct e-mail addresses for Rounder
Records and Elektra Records are:
info@rounder.com
webmaster@elektra.com
I successfully e-mailed both of the above addresses
this A.M. urging them to finance a solo CD by Lee Satterfield.
Let me tell you a little about myself:
"catman" I wish I was 'pulling your leg' about being a quadraplegic
but sadly its true. On June 3, 1997
an infection settled on my spine and abcessed requiring
an emergency operation and leaving my legs and hands
paralyzed. I've made improvement in the last year and a half. I can
walk 300 feet with the help of a 'high
walker' and leg braces. I am working part-time at my
former employer's (I work at home--my computer ties in
with the computers at work). I used to play guitar
and write songs (strictly for my own enjoyment) though
I did play in a country rock group from 1979-1982. My
biggest regret is that, of course, I can no longer play
my Martin. I know this is too long of a letter--but
I appreciate all of the Nanci-Netters.
