Subject: NN: Guitar Players
   From: Paul Lackner (plstudio@mailbag.com>

There are truly many fine guitar players out there. Lindsay Buckingham's
"Landslide", while a very beautiful melody is quite simplistic. He is
however a brilliant guitarist.

If you like melody Laurence Juber is hard to beat
http://members.aol.com/ljnews/lj.html

Leo Kottke is of course brilliant and he covers Buckingham's "World
Turning" on his latest effort.

The late Michael Hedge's first 2 albums are acoustic classics, and his
new one will be out Tuesday.

Will Ackerman's "It takes a year" and Alex Digrassi's "Turning Turning
Back" would also be good melodic choices (most of Ackerman's other work
is pretty pedestrian).

Pierre Bensusan's "Musiques" is simply gorgeous. If you like jazz at all
try Ralph Towner's "Ana" or "Solo Concert".

Willy Porter is a brilliant guitarist but only his first CD really shows
that off http://www.willyporter.com. Live he is unbelievable.

Speaking of unbelievable and for the most part unknown is Nashville based
Michael Gulezian, his "Dare of an Angel" CD is my all-time favorite, and
if anyone out there is truly interested in magnificent solo guitar work
check out http://www.buzzworm.com/timbreline where you will find sound
clips and tour schedules.

I could go on and on, but this is at least a start.

Paul

Subject: NN: Some dates
   From: Rob Schrull (RSchrull@gbla.com>

Hi folks:

Haven't been here in a while. Greetings from Florida, where today it is a
gloriously warm and sunny day.

Just received a few dates from Gold Mountain. I'll list them below. He
also comments that during the summer, they will be trying to match Nanci up
with various symphonies and orchestras. I think I shared with you before
that when Nanci called, she said she was going over to London to record
with the London Symphony, for an album projected to be released before the
end of the year.

Well...off to the beach...here's the dates.

My love to you all....(but one*)!

Rob

May 24 Austin, TX Bass Music Hall
June 4 Houston, TX TBA
June 19 Atlanta, GA Chastain Park

* - It's an inside joke to some who asked me about this comment during my
last post, quite some time ago!

Thanks for the dates, Rob.

I saw Nanci perform 10 years ago in the same hall on the University of Texas
campus in Austin. I live in Waco, which as I remember, is about a 2-hour
drive from Austin; so I plan to try to make this concert too. (But on a
Monday?!)

If any other Nanci Net Wacoans would like to maybe plan to drive down together
or meet in Austin, please Email me privately.

Subject: NN: Lucinda and Melanie
   From: "Matthew Bloomfield" (mailm@tthewb.u-net.com>

Hi All,

Firstly a quick thanks to all those who recommended Lucinda Williams'
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I got it today and really like it.

Secondly are there any Melanie (Safka) fans out there in the madness.
I don't hear much about her but I often listen to her best of album
and think she's fantastic. How about Nanci covering Beautiful People?

Matt

Yes, a cover of Johnny Feelgood would be an urban Nanci. How about the Velvets
"All Tomorrow's Parties" or Bowie's "Life on Mars"

Subject: NN: Updates and shaky grounds
   From: Poetmuse@aol.com

Greetings all-

Just wanted to send a quick hello- I know I have sort of dropped off the face
of the earth, and I apologize (although, has anyone even noticed?)- if it's
not one thing, it's another. On top of that- I've been fighting off depression
too- so I am not good company much... what is it Nanci says in Maybe Tomorrow?
"once again, I'll be a friend worth having and just chalk this off as one of
those years..." (more like one of those lifetimes, but I digress).... It's
Feburary already and I still feel as though I am in emotional traction.

But dad is okay- well, he will be okay- he has the cast off, but is still
stuck on the couch- his ribs are better- he just can't sneeze or laugh too
hard. Every now and then he gets a sharp jab of pain but it eventually passes
as well...the scars on his foot are really something awful and I get a queasy
feeling everytime I look at them but other than that, we count our blessings.
Because of this, of course, my parents have had to file bankruptcy, the court
date has had to be pushed back because no one can find the police report (the
first cop on the scene was a rookie, and let me tell you, my father has no
lack of explosives about THAT one) and things just get rosier and better
around here. *ha*

Well, this wasn't as light hearted as I meant- so I again apologize. You know,
if I didn't know how to say I'm sorry I'd never have anything to say.
take care and warm nanci wishes to all of you.

Christina " staying inside for forever, cuz the winter's in my bones" Myers

Ps. to Mike Chesman- thank you again for introducing me to Beth Nielsen
Chapman- I've returned the gift by turning three other people on to her- music
is truly the gift that keeps on giving...

Subject: NN: Transatlantic Sssions Two (Volumes 1 and 2)
   From: Bill Lavery (bill@villagerecords.com>

A while back Mike Chesman was talking about some UK only CDs of interest
to NN. He descibed them thusly:

>There are four reasons for a Nanci collector to buy these.
>Boots of Spanish Leather featuring Nanci,
>Trouble In The Fields with Nanci backing Maura O'Connell,
>Always Will featuring Nanci and Blue Train with Nanci backing
>Maura O'Connell again. These recording are from a BBC TV series of the
>same name.

>However, beyond what I've written above, the discs are gems with much
>terrific music. Aly Bain, Jerry Douglas, Roseanne Cash, Ricky Skaggs
>and that just scratches the surface. It's a nice mixture of folk, Celtic,
>bluegrass, etc. The recording quality is absolutely superb. This cd is
>ten times better than the Cambridge Folk Fest disc that was also
>mentioned a while back. I highly recommend that you hunt for these discs.

I just got these in. We only ordered five sets and I doubt that we will
get more. Two sets are already reserved for other NanciNetters. I am
afraid that the import duty and freight came in a bit higher than we had
hoped and we are asking 54.99 for the set of two. This is actually a
bit less than our usual markup. I hope you understand. Anyway, Nanci
has a track on each of the discs and there are thirty songs between the
two full of a lot of other great artists. So, if you want them it will
come to $58.19 with the priority shipping.

Thanks

Folks,
Lucinda Williams and Mary Chapin Carpenter have been added to the lineup at
Telluride. See http://www.bluegrass.com/Pages/telluride.html

Maybe Nanci will be next?
