Subject: NN: KC and that "import" album
   From: "Robert Pugsley" (RMP6@leicester.ac.uk>

Hello everyone,

Just on the digest at the mo. Work is killing me! But did notice
a couple of things, firstly I see Kate Campbell is still touring a
lot, any chance of her heading to the UK? I've missed her last
two visits...and I don't want to miss the next one.

Second, I'm confused about this Maura O'Connell album, are there
two? One with an orchestra and Nanci on backing vocals, another
on the Transatlantic Sessions (with Skaggs et al)? Hopefully
someone can straighten this out for me...I'm just not paying attention
at the moment, lot on my mind, you don't want to hear about it!

Glad to hear Christinas dad is on the mend...

Damn! After I saw this subject line, my hopes raced wildly in
anticipation of a reunion of KC and the Sunshine band. WHat a bitter
     disappointment!

Next thing you know, someone's going to burst my bubble and say the
long anticipated collaboration of the Jackson brothers (Michael and
Alan) is not going to happen.

Hi Bill!

Do you or does anyone know if this last individual, Ray Kennedy, is also the
singer/songwriter/guitarist who had a bluesy hit country single about 8 years
ago, called "What a Way to Go"? The song was both amusing and musically
thrilling.

I bought the album of the same title, and became a big fan of that Ray
Kennedy. I've always wondered what happened to him. I think he had a second
album called "Guitar Man."

Forwarding this request that came along via the Bob Dylan mailing list.
Perhaps someone could help this guy out. Send your reply to his e-mail
address, not the Highway 61 address.

>>Bobby Massey (masseyb@hotmail.com>

Pardon me if I've posted this before but one of my messages was missent
& I think I ended up posting another twice & this one not at all.

A couple of questions about "Boots" on Nanci Griffith's "Other Voices"
CD.

1. Any idea when this was recorded? I know it has to be from '92 &
Nanci appeared onstage with Bob at least a couple of times that year
(Letterman & Bobfest) so they could have had an opportunity to record
around those times.

2. Among the locales listed for recording of the CD is "Bob's Place"
(the CD's quotation marks, not mine). Is this, in fact, Bob's place?
If it is, then the song wouldn't have been recorded in conjunction with
either meeting above.

I don't believe Olaf's Chronicles mentions this recording. Any help
appreciated.

Just wanted to drop a line to mention that I am so very glad I got to meet
all you guys last night at the Buddy Mondlock/Cry3 show in Charlotte!! It
was my pleasure & my honor! The show was fantastic & if you haven't gotten
around to see them yet, I highly recommend it! I'm not real good with
words but even if I were, this one still left me speechless!
God Bless the music!!

Well, having managed to catch a few hours of "sleep" by now, I must write in
and give that a hearty second. Hearing "Northern Cross" performed live was
literally stunning. The chemistry that some of us have heard in their CD
was amplified in their performance. I must also give mention to Buddy
Mondlock, author of one c3 song "The Kid" who opened last night...an
exquisite songwriter, I think many of us would consider his CD a worthy
purchase with such songs as "The Cats in the Coliseum" and "Poetic Justice."
Check it out!

And of course, dinner with a few of the usual suspects was great! Did
anyone stop talking long enough to eat a bite of their food?

Amy's comment about "Northern Cross" prompted the following thought. I was
listening to that very song this morning on the way to work. As Dar's moving
voice and the stunning harmonies drifted into the processor in my brain, and
while the sun slowly rose over San Bruno Mtn., splashing the clouds and the
early morning sky over the S.F. Bay with inspiring shades of red, I wondered
what this song is about.

At first blush it seems like a straight up love song, talking about longing
and sweet kisses. But in my inspired morning mood I began to sense that this
song is more. In fact I think it's a quasi gospel song - in that it's about
the constant and unceasing human longing for a spiritual center. Maybe gospel
is the wrong
word in that gospel implies a Christian connotation, and the spiritual longing
can certainly take a person down other such roads. But I really do believe
this song is about that search and the longing that precipitates it.

Anybody care to comment?

Fishin,

Dan G.

Lee's cd won't be solo; her husband John will play on it as well as one
or two other musicians; I think the lineup with have Lee on acoustic
guitar, John on electric or on lead acoustic, and bass and drums. Last
I heard, Lee was uncertain whether to make a demo cd and shop it around
planning to rerecord at the label's expense or to make a finished
product. She's been working on it some in the past month, but I don't
know how close to completion she is. In April, of course, Lee will be
in London working with Nanci, the rest of the BMO, and the LSO.

Subject: NN: A Valentine for Nanci-Net
   From: Poetmuse@aol.com

"In love, there are two thing- bodies and words."- Joyce Carol Oates

Seek out love. Chase it down if you have to. Remember to wait for it. Look
under the least likely place. Let it fill you heart. Give yourself over to
love and discover how much you have to give. Let your mind go. Let your body
follow. Write. Call. Sing songs to the one you adore.
But most importantly, remember to love yourself. Without that everything
else is details. (Take it from someone who knows.....)

I am alone this Valentines Day as I have been in the past. I realized with a
start today, that I never have had one single good one. No dates, no flowers,
no holding hands. Just me, holding my own. Maybe it's better that way. Like
Nanci says, maybe the hearts not taken are truly made of gold. But to those of
you who do have it- I say, don't waste it. Kiss and make up. Do something nice
for the person in your life- you're oh so very fortunate. And I am oh so
very.. very... envious.

"If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I
can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one lonely
person, Into happiness again, I shall not live in vain...." - Emily
Dickinson

Well, I just think this valentine's day stuff is really over-rated, myself.
I've never celebrated it except for the compulsory card-swap in elementary
school. Sometimes, these years, I'll give a "valentine" (usually a
home-made card, or some kind of little gift) to a friend who is special to
me in some way. Funny though, these recipients have always been female, as
if I wanted to get away from the stereotype of lovers exchaning their
hearts on the Holiday of Love and leaving everyone else out. My husband's
birthday is today, so we always celebrate that instead...

I heard on CBC radio today who this St. Valentine guy was. Yes, he was a
real person, a cardinal or bishop (can't remember which) who lived in
Turin, Italy in the time of Claudius' rule. He advocated love and marriage,
against the wishes of Claudius who worried that married men might stay home
with their wives instead of going out to fight (for Claudius). Not a lot of
love in that ruler's heart. As a result of this basic conflict in
principles, Valentine was martyred, on February 14th, somewhere between 270
and 273 AD.

Yunno, I live my life by the many laws of love, and as far as my compass
can tell me, it's there at every moment and every turn, waiting to be
discovered. To paraphrase (and put a new spin on) John Lennon, Love could
be what happens while you're busy making plans.... :-)

all good things, to Christina and everyone...

Subject: NN: Live Cd on Ebay!!!
   From: Richard Viau (richard@prosys.ca>

As everyone probably know by now... there are some interesting auctions on
ebay... but lately there's been a live CD of the "flyer tour" available...
the bid is presently at 51.00 $!!!! I am just wondering what is going on...
anyone knows anything about this cd... is it worth fighting for????? Anyone
ever heard of it??

Last year we had the chance to buy from the digest list 2 video cassettes
and 3 audio tapes... this was not included in it... any chance this group
will ever get to listen to this live recording of Nanci.. if anyone has it
out there and does not want to make money on the back of our preferred
recording artist i think he should speak now...

I would not mind paying the "artist" to get this performance on CD i just
hate to see money go nowhere...

Just my toughts... let's see where it will go!

BTW I would like to make a recommendation if it hasn't been done already...

Susan Werner Time Betweeen Trains... she's like a mix of Nanci and Sheryl
Crow to me anyway... any comments?????

So refreshing... and a wonderful reprise of "Vincent" from Don Mclean...

It's a wonderful performance that was broadcast over British radio but at
such inflated prices it's certainly not worth fighting for... it's not as
common as looking for a Beatle boot but it's still findable. Many of you
out there already have as good versions of it taped off of your FM radios.
Trade a tape with another fan... it's more fun and doesn't cost anything.

It is a Bootleg, which some of us have bought in the past for about
$25.. They just sold one on eBay for about $250. It is a very good
disc, but I would think about it real hard before spending that much for
it.

Howdy, NNetters: Can't believe how quiet it's been out there lately...
Also can't believe no one's written about Nanci at Clear Water, IA for
the 40th Anniversary of Buddy Holly's death...

According to the good folks at Gold Mountain, she was there... They also
confirmed she was in Austin for the Hootie taping of a future ACL...
Anybody see here there?

Subject: NN: The Source -- a review
   From: "Shawn Kimbro" (skimbro@bhset.org>

- The Source - Roan Mountain Hilltoppers

>From beneath a moss covered rock on the side of Roan
Mountain, just a little to the North of the Appalachian
Trail, there flows a cold clear spring. Folks around these
parts travel for miles to quench their thirst with the
sweet, clean water. Not far away from that spring there is a
little frame house occupied by the Birchfield family. The
Birchfields have occupied this corner of the Appalachian
Mountains for several centuries. Like the water from that
cold little spring, they are a bountiful source for
delightful, original refreshment.

The Birchfield family has been making music for generations.
Fiddler Joe Birchfield learned to play from his father John
who learned from his parents. He and his brother Crede
taught songs to the Carter Family when they came tune
collecting in the 1930s. Crede played claw-hammer banjo and
in his day is said to have known more songs than any man
alive. Joe's son Bill whittles out his own fiddles and
continues the tradition with some of the finest old-time
bowing to be heard. The entire family frails, sings,
thumps, or picks. Bill remembers when all the neighbors
would come over and they'd throw back the rugs, scoot away
the furniture, and dance all night to the window rattling
sounds of fiddle and banjo. Guitars didn't come along in
this part of the mountains until about the 1920s. Since he
was left-handed and had seen others play only on instruments
strung for right-handed players, Bill developed a unique
over-hand style of playing. His wife Janice sings and plays
a gut-bucket--a bass instrument fashioned out of a
galvanized metal washtub, a string, and a hickory stick.
Janice plays it right on key with licks that would have made
Roy Huskey Jr. take notice.

The good news is that the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers continue
to be a well-spring for clear, refreshing Appalachian music.
I learned about the Birchfield family while talking to Frank
Lee of the Freight Hoppers after a recent show. I was very
excited to hear they would be appearing in town and I
enjoyed their concert as much as any I've attended. I
really feel like I've stumbled onto one of the original
sources of folk music in this country. You can read more
about Joe Birchfield on David Lynch's site:
http://www.geocities.com/~oldtimefiddler/birchfield.html

Their latest tape is available from Cloudlands Music. This
is the same label that has offered recordings by Will Keys
and Frank Proffitt. It's called "Money In Both Pockets." I
don't think you'll find it in your local record store, but
you can get one from Janice Birchfield. Write to her at
P.O. Box 198, Hampton, TN 37658. Or contact me and I'll
give you her phone number. She might even send you a mason
jar full of the coldest, clearest water on Roan Mountain.
