From: prive@cdsnet.net
My Email hasn't been working for some time so I've been reading digests
until my eyes have crossed!
I was shocked to come on to a discussion about a recent review of OVII.
Reading the review and all of the comments made me get out the review
People Magazine did 8-3-98. At the time it impressed me because it was
an informed review. It was truthful, but not malicious. "Not only does
this album benefit from the sweet growl of Griffith's sensuous voice, it
also reflects her wondrous curiosity and eclectic tastes in music. This
open house attitude isn't always a blessing, of course." I think that
got the point across. (The "Bottom Line" of this review was, "Lovely,
lively mix of generations and genres.")
Thanks for the discussion on Stacey Earle. I have plans to see her Sept.
3 along with Cry, Cry, Cry opening for Greg Brown. I am definitely going
to get the CD and get familiar with her music.

"I haven't heard too much talk yet about Chris Knight. He's probably my
favorite male artist right now."
Me too Mr. K.......... He is awesome, the first time I heard the intro to
that 90 acre song I thought Mr Dylan was about to pop out from behind the
harmonica but Mr Knight appears instead. What a pleasant suprise that was.
Get it people, you will not be disappointed!!!!! Gordon
ps. Still not enjoying ovor2 too much but I am enjoying the controversy. It's
just like old times again around here. Can't wait to get my digest!!!! By
the way is anyone ready to explain the chieftains/Ashley McA**hole thing yet
or am I going to go to my grave wondering what really happened there?

Subject: NN: Another recomendation
From: Lluis Sala (diligencia@altavista.net>
Hi folks,
I've recently seen in this list two postings about Chris Knight's album
and how good it was. Indeed, it's also one of my favourite albums of
1998. So, for those that enjoy Chris Knight's and Steve Earle's kind of
music, I'd like to recommend you a german singer/songwriter called
Markus Rill. He writes all his songs (both music and lyrics - in
English) and has a real talent to tell stories. His first album is
called "Gunslinger's tales" and it's one of those unearthed gems. This
piece appeared recently in the Steve Earle mailing list:
-----------------------------
CD RECOMMENDATION
Tom Senor (senor@comp.uark.edu>
Greetings. I believe this has been mentioned on Exit 0 once before, but a
member of our list, Markus Rill, has put out a terrific CD, "Gunslinger's
Tales," that I think would be enjoyed by virtually every Steve Earle fan. The
songs are well-crafted stories, generally set in Texas or the southwestern
part of the States, which is pretty remarkable since Rill is from Germany.
The music is pure alt-country and the production crisp and lean. Hell, Rill
even has a slightly raspy and strong rock 'n' roll voice. There really isn't
anything not to like about this album. (For the record, I have no connection
to Markus; I'm just a fan.) You can have a look at his webpage (which will
tell you how to get his CD) by going to this address:
http://members.aol.com/masterlab/MarkusRill/
--------------------------------
Well, I saw Markus play live in Spain last December in an acoustic tour
and I was also really impressed. Don't forget this name!
Best regards,

I was over at Barnes & Noble this evening and came across the late
Kate Wolf's album An Evening In Austin. It is a live recording of
her November 1985 ACL show. Very pleasant essential folk.
Also, I ordered a copy of Cory Sipper's The Bedroom Tapes. It's
a newly released CD of her two earlier cassette releases. It's
called The Bedroom Tapes because that's where she made most of the
recordings. She's an excellent guitarist with a good voice and
a different slant on lyrics. All the songs were written by her
except for two. I'm not sure it could be called typical folk, But
I like it very much. Your mileage may vary.
Take care,
Ed

From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>
You know what?
She used to never do it. Then she did it once and I loved it. I guess
she kinda liked it too so she tried it a couple of more times. Now it
seems like she's doing it all the time and it's all I can do to keep up
with her! I'm speaking of course about Gillian Welch performing in
my hometown. She was just here a couple of months ago but her show with
David Rawlings tonight was sublime. I think I'm up to 12 or 13 shows
now so I won't waste your time with another concert report. Suffice it
to say that I was convinced two years ago that this is the absolute best
duo in acoustic music and nothing happened tonight to make me change my
mind. This show didn't suck!
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Subject: NN: Re: The Review...
From: Steve Makarsky (thekidd@flash.net>
I really don't want to beat a dead horse about the Review, but I felt I
needed to toss in my 2 cents worth:
I think what most people are upset about is the personal attack against
Nanci... Even if what OysterBoy writes is HIS honest opinion about the
CD and even if its true, it in no way (IMHO) authorizes him to turn it
into an attack on the artist.... Once he does that, in my view hes gone
beyond the bounds of accepted criticism...
I dont listen to Top 40 radio because I dont care for most of the
music thats played on it... That's my opinion, but it doesnt give me
the right to jump on the artists... If I dont like the music, I simply
dont listen to it...
I, for one, really like OVTOO, but that is MY opinion... Feel free to
agree or disagree with me on the basis of the music and the merits of my
opinion, but dont attack me as a person... We all have our likes and
dislikes & Im willing to bet if we ran a poll for the best Nanci song,
wed get into heated debates without any personal character
assassinations... One thing Ive always liked about NNet is the ability
to agree to disagree while still being civil... ;-)
One other point (and this is not an attack on anyone)... About the use
of aNGel... I never saw this as a sign of fanatical devotion... I always
assumed people used it as a term of endearment more than anything
else... If you want to use it, fine... If not, thats fine, too...
Steve (waiting to see Nanci in Austin...)

Just a favor to ask of you all.
I feel I'm not alone when I say this, I buy a lot of CD's based on other

Favor: Include a link to a web site that has music clips when you
recommend an artist.
Hope this helps.....JIM

Subject: NN: Req: Beth Nielsen Chapman piano book (No Nanci)
From: "Matthew Bloomfield" (mailm@tthewb.u-net.com>
Hi folks,
I am looking for the piano music to Sand and Water, not just the song,
but the whole album.
I tried ordering from a music shop, who are usually very good, and
they said they need more info.
I have searched on-line but I can only find compilation books that
have the Sand and Water song in.
Does anyone know if the book of the album is available, or if
there is a better place for BNC queries?
Any help gratefully received,
Matt

Oy! What happened to this list?! i leave for a little while and come back
to find that y'all have morphed into an "all seafood, all the time"
discussion group. Just to be on-topic, i ate a swanson fish n' chips t.v.
dinner the other day. yum, yum, good!
it's good to be back though. i've been digest-only status for a while. I
was out of town and since i've been back, i've not had the time to keep up
on the regular list.
items of business: Congrats to Joe and Kathie on their impending nuptials!
Best wishes to both of you. Also, best thoughts to Christina and her
father. Hope the healing is moving right along.
personal revelation of the week: lucy kaplansky, lynn miles, and
julia-louis dreyfuss (of seinfeld fame) are all the same person.
Nanci content from my real life: I went to Austin in late January for a
research conference, and Don Walser (of Horse Whisperer soundtrack fame)
was the entertainment at a barbeque hosted by UT-Austin. Plus, they served
Shiner Bock. What a night. Great old-time cowboy music, research
discussions, and barbeque. what else could a boy ask for?
I made a point to see the site of the old Woolworths, did the Congress
Avenue stroll, and somehow ended up an unwitting observer to a huge
anti-abortion parade that marched up Congress Ave. to the Texas Capitol
building.
Overall I found Austin to be a great city.
This whole oyster boy business is funny to me, because my girlfriend (now
live-in girlfriend!) is friends with the founder/publisher of oyster boy.
They knew each other in North Carolina in grad school and now they both
find themselves in the SF bay area. And then their lives cross via this
latest controversy on the NN.
It's a small world indeed. (just to clarify: he *isn't* the author of the
review, just the publisher of the mag)
As for the review, while i don't whole heartedly agree with the way the
reviewer stated his message, I do agree with most of the content. OVORII
was a major disappointment to me. Perhaps because of the name, it's
unavoidable (though perhaps unfair) to compare it to the sheer perfection
of OVOR. I think I would be less annoyed by II if it had been titled
something like "A motley bunch of folk singers who all happen to be buds of
Nanci Griffith sing a few songs, with special guest star Nanci Griffith".
Oh well, such is life. It's good to be back. I've been living with
Melissa for a couple months now, after having a long-distance relationship
since June '97. So for that, Nanci will always get thanks from me. Even if
she chose to inflict an OVOR III upon us! :)

Subject: NN: Austin Help
From: Poetmuse@aol.com
greetings nanci nuts-
well, I am planning this Austin thing and so far the easiest thing has been to
get the tickets to the concert- Thanks Steve!-....everything else is going
south though...
I mean... it just seems as though it will be impossible for me to get there...
the price of plane tickets is outrageous! Around 250.00 just to go from Phx.
to Austin! So then I thought... hey, what about the bus? I mean, I HATE
traveling by bus, but this beggar can't be a chooser- but you know what?
Greyhoud is charging the same as the airlines!!!! What is that all about? Life
hates me.
And I just found out I need to shell out about 300 for taxes this year...
which, I don't know where I am going to find this money...out my @#$, I guess-
but that's neither here nor there.. god, I hate being poor.
But here is the meaning behind the post (that, and I wanted to just vent to
someone- I've been shacked up on cough syrup and cough drops for two days
straight now and I think the care bears have been here...with the Teletubbies)
Anyone have any insight in getting travel breaks-??? Anyone have any good
(cheap) ideas of where to stay once I get to Austin (I am such an optimist)???

Folks,
My favorite National Enquirer cover girl Kelly Willis has just put out a
new CD. This is her first album where she has writing credit on a
substantial number of songs. She throws in a Nick Drake cover, she knows
how to get on my good side.

The duck knows of what he quacks. Man I don't now what it is but this girl
gives me, well I better not say... lets call it an alien heat. A fire in the
chest and burning ears and goosebumps up and down both arms. I can't explain
it but when she sings I'm a goner.
I just got back from a fantastic John Stewart concert (you know, the cover boy
on Little Love Afairs with the Sweet Dreams duet). But what I am really
excited about is I have in my hand a ticket I bought tonight to see Kelly
Willis at the same tiny club in ten days. Sweet Dreams will come for sure.

Subject: NN: More info on Women in Song: Best of Austin City Limits
From: Cynthia Courtney
Hi all,
Here's some more info on the PBS one-hour retrospective of Austin City
Limits, featuring women singer-songwriters, and hosted by Shawn Colvin.
Nanci will be shown singing "It's a Hard Life." Other performers
include Lucinda Williams, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Michelle
Shocked, Roseanne Cash, Kim Richey, etc.!
The show is scheduled to air March 2, 1999 at 10:00 p.m., but check your
local listings http://www.pbs.org/whatson/locallistings.html as this
may vary. In Boston, MA, for example, the local PBS station no longer
carries Austin City Limits in its regular line-up (heresy!), but is
airing the show at 5:00 AM on March 3. Guess I'll have to program the
VCR....
For more info on the show, see:

P.S. Call me perverse, but I for one have enjoyed all the banter,
opinionating, acrimony, etc. inspired (and I choose that word
deliberately) by "Oyster Boy's" review. No one can call the NanciNet
dull, and that's why I love it.

Subject: Nanci & Hootie & The Blowfish ACL taping
From: Mickie Merkens (alpharay@ibm.net>
Just finished visiting the Nanci Net site and noticed that no one has
answered Steve's question about the ACL taping:
From: Steve Makarsky (thekidd@flash.net>
>...the good folks at Gold Mountain...
>confirmed she was in Austin for the Hootie taping of a future ACL...
>Anybody see her there?
Just in case his question remains unanswered, please let everybody know:
Yes, it's true!
Nanci was the special guest at the ACL taping of Hootie & The Blowfish on
February 3rd--the final taping for this season. They put on a really
entertaining and enjoyable show! Nanci was in top form and singing so
well. You could see there's a very special relationship between Darius and
Nanci and the blend of those two voices on the songs on which she was a
guest performer was something special to hear. It was great to see Nanci
looking so well and relaxed and having such a blast--I think those boys are
a good influence on her! The Austin audience was very much surprised and
appreciative of Nanci's appearance and she received a warm welcome from the
crowd. I must add that, even though Nanci didn't sing on it and even
though it may or may not make the final airing, the band's note-for-note
rendition of "Black Magic Woman" was one of the highlights of the show and
had everyone on their feet. Stayed tuned for the airing of this show in
your own living room soon.
