Subject: James Hooker Update
   From: Marty Welch (martyw@poky.srv.net>

Hi folks,

Good news.

I'm on the digest so if you already received word today this will be a
repeat with some important new information.

James is home and doing well. All the infection, etc. from his gall bladder
has been cleared up and his liver is fine. He had the staples from the
operation removed as well.

So, he's doing well physically and spiritually but will, of course, have
some significant medical bills. What can you do to help? I'd suggest buying
a copy or two (or three, or....) of "Sea Prayers and Whispers and Whispers"
directly from James. Here's how to order:

Cashiers Check or money orders must be payable to James H. Brown Jr.
James can not accept personal checks any longer.

CD only
Domestic: $15.00 (US Cashiers check or Money Order only + $3.00 S/H)

United Kingdom: (International Money order in equivalent of $15.95 British
Pound Sterling)

Foreign: $24.95 (US drawn on US bank, includes shipping)

Mail order to:

BMOR-Blue Moon Orchestra Records
165 Patsy Drive
Florence, Alabama 35633 USA

Please note: Don't use the PO Box on James' home page. Please use the street
address above.

Thanks everyone!

Cheers,
Marty

I've meant to mention this before, but someone is selling copies of "Poet in
my Television" on ebay in multiple copies (maybe not at this very moment, but
a few times in recent weeks). I personally find this pretty reprehensible
since it was made as a freebie for folks on here. Any comments?

You better believe it. I e-mailed Ebay and told them that somebody was
trying to profit by copyrighted material in a serious way, but they have
apparently ignored my e-mail and the sales went through. I explained how
the tapes were put together and that this was the exact item that was being
sold. I was extremely concerned; it is this sort of thing that keeps those
of us who want to share taped and recorded material on a non-profit, legal,
ethical basis from getting the opportunity to do so. I do hope they are
looking into it, but I doubt it.

ARRGH! This makes me very angry, as the one who compiled and dubbed these
tapes. (this is actually john hodges, btw, despite the e-mail address).

A lot of people put a lot of work into those tapes (especially esteemed
former listdaddy Mark F., who sent an entire tape of clips). Granted, we
may have stretched copyright law in the first place by doing this
project, but no one made money off these two tapes.

Hi All,

This compilation was before my time on the Nancinet. What exactly did you
compile John? Was it a tape full of songs (which ones) and what does the
Television in the title refer to?

Tasha, feeling bad for always asking you guys to explain what I've missed,

Not to trivialize the Oiet in My TV issue, I nonetheless predict you
won't be able to give away the "Unnecessary Plastic Object II" tape
(with my performance among other netters) on Eba.

Hey, now there's an idea! If I advertise the UPO2 tapes over nBay (aka
Nancinet) without anyone having heard Reid sing... the bids could go
stratospheric and I could afford to purchase all the Nanci eBay material I
want without having to worry about being outbid. This sounds better than my
last chain letter scheme... five folks were asked to each send me one Nanci
Griffith item from their collection, then send the message to five more
Nancinetters and replace the bottom name with their own name. Within two
weeks they were promised all kinds of Nanci goodies would arrive in the
mail.... Of course with my name at the top I was assured the first and best
items. It really works! Look....
Sid (aka MisterCD) sent the cardboard mailers from the last three Nanci
orders he placed with Goldmine advertisers.
Margie (aka Soloflyer) sent the stryofoam packing beads that came with
her Nanci Griffith signature model Taylor Guitar.
Bill sent me all the spam mail that he had filtered off of Nancinet.
Gosh, I didn't know such products even existed!
Shawn sent the clogged air filter from his custom painted green and
yellow "Lawn Boy" riding mower. You know, the one that has that little
devil figure painted on the cowling with the words "Trouble In The Fields."

Hey and that's just the first week! I can't wait for next weeks items.
As you can see I'm rapidly accumulating quite a memorabilia collection...

Oh, I guess I should mention I did get one response from some guy who
critiqued and corrected my chain letter and sent it back to me. He sure
seemed an odd duck ;-)

This is a transcript of what I wrote to Ebay. They have not yet responded
to me, and I'm thinking of sending a follow-up to see if they were concerned:

I think you should just drop this subject. Legally there is no
difference in giving away or charging for this material. If someone
thinks it is worth buying, let them.

   From: "KAREN A. JONES" (kajo50@yahoo.com>

I too like the Dixie Chicks. They are going to be in concert here
soon, unfortunatly the tickets sold out before I could buy one. I find
them a departure from the current diet of Reba, Faith and Patty. Like
Nanci and another of my favorites Mary Chapin Carpenter you can just
comfortably pigeon hole them into the traditional country music slot.
They sure don't dress traditionally do they?

Have you all listen to newcomer Sarah Evans? She's a lot more country
that Nanci but I am really liking her CD. There's a lot more to it
than just "No Place That Far" which is all they can seem to play on
the radio.

My prayers and good thoughts go out to Nanci. I wish you well and
happy. I've listen to you for years and had the great pleasure of
seeing you in concert last year in Greenville, S.C.. Thank you for
that gift. I will never forget it. I look forward to seeing you again
soon.

Sincerely, Kajo

Subject: NN: More Steve Earle recommendations
   From: HHHoliday@aol.com

Hi all,
I can't imagine folks on this list *wouldn't* like at least some of Steve
Earle's records. He and Nanci have both been on my short list of folks who
make me love and keep listening to folk, country, roots, bluegrass, etc. So I
highly recommend most all his albums; the ones midcareer where he strayed into
album oriented rock (and was on heroin alot) are my least favorites, but even
there some gems do show up.

Before that is just great (Guitar Town and Exit O), and after that is probably
even better (Train a Comin', I Feel Alright, El Corazon, and new all
bluegrass-- with the Del McCroury Band-- The Mountain). He seems to be
keeping clean by being furiously productive, musically. How cool is that!

Subject: NN: Song of the Hills and Lucy Kaplansky's new one
   From: "Marsha Logsdon" (mlogsdon@sdcoe.k12.ca.us>

I'm glad Robert P. mentioned these two CDs. They have become my favorites
in the last couple of weeks, along with a solo recording by a great Irish
tenor named Tommy Fleming.

"Song of the Hills" is just a beautiful recording of classic Appalachian
favorites, played by the likes of Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Eric Weissberg,
Norman and Nancy Blake, John Sebastian, Bill Keith, Brian Keane, Lorraine
Lee, Tony Trischka, John Doan, Peter Blue, Ken Kosek, Stacy Phillips, Alan
Feldman, John Sholle, and John Whelan. These melodies are just so well
played, and I've taken it to work just to have some lovely background music
to ease the stress of my job! If you like this kind of music, this is a
must-have.

I saw a mention of the new Lucy Kaplansky on another digest, and I called to
order one right away. I haven't been disappointed, either! I have her
other two recordings, and I think I like this one even more...or maybe it's
because I can't get enough of her! "Ten Year Night" is just full of good
songs, and Lucy sounds just great!!! Go out and buy it!

The last current favorite is the one by Tommy Fleming. For the Irish music
lovers, Fleming is the male voice on the DeDannan's "Hibernian Rhapsody".
This CD was supposed to launch a tour, but he was injured in an automobile
accident in December in Ireland, so the tour has been postponed. But that
doesn't mean that you can't buy the CD and hear his beautiful voice. It's
called "Restless Spirit", and he sings traditional songs as well as
contemporary ones. This one is a treat!

I have such a wide interest in folk music that it's difficult to pin down
just what I like the most, but I'm a sucker for a good song and a great
"voice" to interpret it. I enjoy reading about what everybody else is
listening to, so thanks to everyone who has enriched my "repertoire". :)

Regards,
Marsha

Subject: NN: A couple of thoughts...
   From: Josh.Mortenson@stpaul.com

I was at Border's monolithic store on Sunday and they had a listening station
with Sandy Denny in it. So I sat there for about 1/2 an hour and listened to
her. It was wonderful. I definitely loved the original version of "who knows
where the time goes".

Also, I belong to the Indigo Girls list and someone asked what their first
song they heard by them was and there was some really good feedback. So let me
know what your first Nanci experience was. I have a friend who is a huge fan
of hers and he kept recommending her but I never bothered to go out and get it
until OVOR. I heard the Indigo Girls were singing on it and so I went out and
bought the cassette. (Little did I know how
well you can't discern their voices) Nonetheless, I popped it in my walkman
and meandered about downtown Minneapolis getting lost with Nanci on warm May
day. It was definitely memorable.

> how many of us seek out the cd's of the writers featured by some

Although there are many, I'd echo Dave Gibson in saying that the most
meaningful to me has been Kate Wolf, Kate Wolf, Kate Wolf. There are so many
times when I'm tempted to throw my hands up in despair or resignation that I
hear her beautiful voice saying, "This is a song about not losing heart..."
and then go into that gorgeous rendition of "Brother Warrior" on "Kate Wolf:
An Evening in Austin."

On a weirder note, I also enjoy Iris Dement very much and am ready for some
new Iris music. I first became acquainted with her when she was opening for
Nanci a few years ago. Procrastinating around Ebay yesterday (no, I didn't
bid on any NG items, thank yew) I noted there were a couple of Iris items on
the block. The description attached to a poster described her as the "female
counterpart to Jimmie Dale Gilmore." ???????

Now I got into Iris DeMent when I read an article by John Prine, who said
she was THE finest songwriter he'd ever come across. That was about a
year before her first cd came out. I scanned papers and magazines for
info on her, but to no avail. Then, one night on a country music
programme the dj said he had a preview of a new female singer songwriter,
and he played a song without giving out the name of the artist, I
listened spellbound, and from what John Prine had said, about her writing
and singing, a sixth sense told me this was what I had been waiting for.
Sure enough at the end the dj said it was Iris, and I've been hooked ever
since.

Subject: NN: Nanci's influence
   From: TROY ADAM ROEPKE (hhelen@sfsu.edu>

Dearest Nancinetters,

Greetings, everyone! I want to put my 2 or 3 cents worth in on the
discussion of Nanci's influence on our music tastes. Until I saw the video
on VH1 for 'It's a Hard Life..', I was an appreciator of the usual
pop/hip-hop/alternative artists (except for Jane Siberry). After hearing
that mind-expanding song, I quickly purchased whatever Nanci music I could
locate in my small NE hometown. I did not, however, become more familiar
with the singer/songwriter/folk genre until the release of OVOR. That
album introduced me to the likes of Townes van Zant, John Prine, EmmyLou,
and, especially, Kate Wolf. Kate's complete musical package - vocals,
lyrics, music, phrasing, intonation, etc - blew me away and continues to
do so today. I only have the double CD 'Gold', but listen to it often,
certainly in times of sorrow and of joy. During those times, I close my
eyes and allow her warm, gentle, true vocals envelope me in security
blanket of serenity, beauty and LIFE, and remember what this is all about
here and now. The first strains of 'I hear you've got a full-time woman,
now...' sets me off on the journey.
Furthermore, I have been listening to those two CD's (plus Flyer,
LLA and Jane Siberry's 'When I Was A Boy') a lot these past few weeks due
to the passing of my friend (and roommate) two months ago (this is the
third loved one in 6 months! Everybody else who knows me is taking out
hefty life insurance policies.) :) There is something - something that M.
Manson just doesn't have :) - about these four albums (5 CD's) that is an
affirmation of life for me as well as clearing a path through the sorrow
and confusion to joy, forgiveness and acceptance. I forget the tragic
violent ways these loved one died and can focus on what they meant to me
and the impact they had on my life - the friendship, love, the guidance,
etc.). This the power of music, of Kate, Nanci and Jane's. Whilst I am
positive that I would 'survive' these times without their comfort, the
survival would not be nearly so fulfilling and healing and melodic.
Thanks for allowing me to share what these artist do for me and my
mental health.

Have a Barbra Beautiful Day!
Troy

I've never heard David Massengill, but his name has resided in my brain for
15 years, and I only knew one thing about him: he wrote "On the Road to
Fairfax County" which the Roches covered. You can't listen to it without
crying. Of course I can hardly listen to the Roches sing anything without
crying. :-)

Speaking of crying, I just got Cry Cry Cry. What loving renditions of
exquisite songs, plus a cover of REM! I'm getting musical influences from

I'll soon be getting Lucinda and Dixie Chicks.

Richard and other NNers,

I'm assuming Richard that you like "Back On Top" Are you the one who
posted earlier that you used to be on the Van-list? I tried to e-mail you
after that but my post came back as undeliverable. I've stated on here
before that to me, Van Morrison is the greatest living singer/songwriter,
with all due respect to Nanci of course. I love her too or I wouldn't be
here. "Back On Top" is an exquisite piece of work. A stripped down band
this time around with lush strings and some great harmonica work from Van.
Richard, I think you mentioned that you left the Van-list because of
certain incendiary discussions. I haven't witnessed any of those in quite
a long time so we'd love to have you back. In fact there is now a tape
trading list fo Van fans also and they are some of the most helpful and
generous people I've ever run across as far as sharing this great music. I
think maybe the Irish connection serves as a link to Nanci-related topics.
Those of you who haven't listened to Van Morrison in awhile owe it to
yourselves to seek out this new recording. There is so much great music
out there to be had in all different genres and Van Morrison is a true
classic.
Alan
