Subject: NN: Concert date; Pure Nanci content
From: Terence Capps (tedoca@erols.com>
Friends,
I have confirmed through the venue that Nanci Griffith will be appearing
with the National Symphony Orchestra (Anthony Aibel conducting) at The
Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna Va. on Wednesday June 30th, 1999 at
8:15pm. Tickets are currently available through mail-order only and
range in price from $26 for in house seats to $16 for lawn seats. Go to
http://www.wolf-trap.org to print out the mail-order form. Wolf Trap is
a beautiful outdoor pavilion nestled amongst the trees, and is (as far
as I know) the only National Park dedicated to the performing arts.
After April 14th, tickets will be available to the general public
through ProTix at 1-800-955-5566, or online at http://www.protix.com .
The Wolf Trap box office may be contacted directly by calling
703-255-1868, but again, telephone sales will not begin until April
14th.
Another option is a company called "Great Seats." Their number is
800-853-SEAT, or on the web at http://www.greatseats.com . They claim
they will have 'great seats' for this show on sale late next week or,
beginning of the week after??? (discussion to follow in a separate
email)
Anyone interested in planning a Nanci Gathering for this show? Please
contact me at tedoca@erols.com (what happened to the Nanci Concert
Planner?)

I think you should just drop this subject. Legally there is no
difference in giving away or charging for this material. If someone
thinks it is worth buying, let them. >>
The difference is that no money changed hands on the fan list. And someone on
ebay is making money off of Nanci (and the contributors to the tape). In
addition to posting messages about the seller (on the ebay comments area),
someone might also want to forward the information to Nanci's management. If
ebay ignores an individual complaint, they might take notice if they are
warned of copyright violations by the artist's management.

Thanks for the posts back on guitars. I am getting tired of my Ovation and
there seemed to be a fair amount of satisfaction with Guild (especially the
dreadnaught). Taylor didn't fare too well though. I'm going to make a
change, just have to keep on lookin'......
Anyone know of any good sites with words/chords to some of our favorites
(Shindell, Griffith,Gorka,MacLean, etc....)?
Thanks,

((I've never heard David Massengill, but his name has resided in my brain for
15 years, and I only knew one thing about him: he wrote "On the Road to
Fairfax County" which the Roches covered. >>
David Massengill has three CDs available. The first, "Coming Up For Air" is
the best and is available on Flying Fish. Not only does it include his
version of "On The Road To Fairfax County" (also covered by Joan Baez, who
lovingly said it was just like a real folk song - "it's long, and somebody
dies") but also a superb look at American race relations in "Number One In
America" and a fine story-song called "My Name Joe" that was originally
recorded for "Legacy" a compilation of then up and coming singer songwriters
released by Windham Hill (which also included John Gorka, Sara Hickman, and
Bill Morrisey - DM's version of "My Name Joe" on it featured Shawn Colvin and
was actually better than the one that ended up on "Air").
Massengill's two other cds, "The Return" and last year's "Twilight the Taj
Mahall" are both on Plump Records. Both are worthwhile, "The Return" being
the better of the two.

Subject: NN: E-bay suggestion / Free CDs claimed
From: HenryJG@aol.com
Hey, y'all. Found your e-bay posts really interesting since i'm a total e-bay
addict. How about posting 'negative feedback' to the Ebay account of the
seller who's selling the tapes? This is usually done to show that someone is
unhappy with a transaction (e.g., receiving damaged goods) but I don't see why
the feedback couldn't be that you thought that profiting from the merchandise
was unethical.
I don't think you have to actually buy something from a seller in order to do
this, but I do think you have to be a registered ebay user, which only
involves giving ebay your name and address. Just thought if the seller's
feedback rating got low enough, it might discourage such sales.
I do agree with whoever said that legally there's no difference between
copying video clips for profit and giving them away, but ethically it does
seem different to profit from it.
Finally, all the CDs (even Tony) have been claimed, so if you haven't heard
back from me yet, someone else beat you to it.
Ta,
John

Subject: NN: First Nanci Exposure
From: nmrs@freeway.net
One night I a number of years ago I was just sort of channel surfing
(major boredom as I don't watch all that much TV) and stopped when I
came to what I later found out was Austin City Limits featuring Nanci.
I became totally hooked on her music but still did not know much about
her or know anyone else who was a fan. Then OVOR came out. I will
never forget the first time I heard it - we were visiting friends and
asked if we could put it in their CD player. I am afraid I was probably
pretty rude because I could not follow their conversation due to being
completely mesmerized by the music! Fortunately they liked it, too.
Not only did this CD have Nanci at her very best, it had, among others,
Emmylou, Arlo Guthrie (we never get tired of "Tecumseh Valley"), John
Prine, janis Ian, etc. I became a belated fan of Kate Wolf and also
love Iris DeMent. So I was ready for the second OV and I personally
love it, admitedly some songs more than others, but as a child of the
60's was thrilled to hear Ian Tyson on Canadian Whiskey. I guess I
really appreciate Nanci's work on preserving music and helping us not to
forget the past. Alas, I must admit that I, like many others, prefer
Nanci with her guitar just singing from her heart rather than some of
the more produced stuff of late, although I thoroughly enjoyed Flyer,
because to me it just seems so pure. Oh, one of our all time favorite
recordings of hers is with the Chieftains "Red is the Rose" on An Irish
Evening. Now if she would just come to Michigan again...

Subject: NN: Ebay experience
From: "Todd Barrett" (astrocity@hotmail.com>
Hello all,
As far as Ebay responding to complaints that someone sent to them....I
can't really say. But I seem to have read somewhere that they have come
under fire lately for such things (copyrighted materials) and supposedly
was trying to crack down. Personally I don't see how they can (or if I
want them to) screen every item that lists for sale.
With that being said....I recently was bidding on some promotional
pictures and supposedly original pictures of my favorite defunct band,
Concrete Blonde. Anyway, the price kept getting bid up higher than I
would usually feel comfortable dealing with in an auction site.
Suddenly the item disappeared and I got an email from Ebay saying that
they had removed it for reasons they wouldn't say and that if I wanted
to go through with the transaction that it was at my own risk. I
BELIEVE that it was being artificially bid on....I don't know. So maybe
Ebay does try to keep a handle on these crazy things.
I guess I should admit to owning 3 (three) whole shares of Ebay. Maybe
I will get rich. LOL

Subject: NN: Indulged
From: John Edward Graveling (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
I am wondering if anyone out there on my two favourite lists has indulged
themselves in "Soul's Core" by Shawn Mullins. "Lullaby" has been getting
regular airplay on British radio since last October, but, it has taken
until this week for the cd to be released. I have read very little about
Shawn, and the single is one of those pieces you either love or hate. My
early impressions were highly sceptical, but it has weaved it's way into
my head to such a degree that I went into my local record store and
listened to the first ten seconds of every track to see if "Soul's Core"
was something I might enjoy listening to. The reviewers mentioning drum
loops put me off a tad. Well I forked over my hard earned cash and
brought the cd home, and after one listen I have to say it is an
extremely enjoyable song cycle of journeys through America. Stylistically
it is very varied and Shawn's, at times, partially spoken delivery, may
not be to everyones taste.
I'd be interested to hear anyone else's comments on this highly
individualistic piece of work.

Subject: NN: First Nanci Experiences
From: Tom Gill (tgill@igc.org>
Here's one that I bet is very atypical for a Nanci Griffith fan. I was
hooked on Nanci by one of her music videos.
Back when I lived in Davis, California, a lot of my buddies were
seriously into contemporary folk music; I listened to some of it but not
a lot. My friends were always telling be about this FANTASTIC
singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith, and she had gained a place on my
"I've-gotta-listen-to-her-music-someday" list. The one day when I was
visiting a friend out of town (who had cable), I was transfixed to VH-1
one afternoon when an INCREDIBLE video came on of this woman with a
distinctive voice singing "I don't want to talk about love." I was
almost jumping out of my skin, since I couldn't wait for the video to
end so I could see who it was and head straight to the music store to
buy it. Aaaaaaah! THAT's Nanci Griffith.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been a fan of hers ever since.
That, by the way, was the one and only time I've seen a traditional
("MTV-style") music video of Nanci's. Has she made others?
-Tom Gill
Lubbock, Texas
P.S. I can see why Iris deMent can be called "the female Jimmie Dale
Gilmore": both of them are known for their, er, eh, 'distinctive'
voices. While I love Jimmie Dale, as far as Iris goes, my feelings can
be summed up in someting someone wrote about her on the NanciNet about
three years ago (and I've never forgotten): "for a singer/songwriter...
she's a heck of a songwriter."

Like most movies I've seen in the past couple of years, I was more impressed
with the music than with the movie itself. Like last year's Horse Whisperer,
the story of the movie is predictable and kitschy, but the soundtrack is
superb. If you go to the movie and find yourself sliding into the aisle from
the syrupy plot, just kick back and listen to the music. Unlike the Horse
Whisperer, the music from the soundtrack is actually included in the movie.
As for the overall quality of the Message CD, I like about 2/3 of it. It's
more on the pop-folk side of my musical taste, so I don't recommend it to the
country-folk listeners on the list. Lyrically, it's all about that ever-
uplifting, common theme of unrequited love (maybe that's where my Nanci-
related content comes in).
If you're curious about it, maybe you should wait until it goes to the
discount bins somewhere.

Subject: NN: Great Seats?
From: Terence Capps (tedoca@erols.com>
Friends,
Something is troubling me and I'd like some opinions. In late summer
of '97 I found myself without tickets to an upcoming Nanci concert in my
area. It was late in the game and there were just no more tickets available.
Determined not to miss the show, I contacted a company called Great Seats.
With nothing more than a five minute phone call and a credit card I was
able to secure two front-row tickets, at a hundred bucks a pop, -- just
days before the show.
At the time I thought it was great, but then I read an article
somewhere explaining how these companies that sell premium seats actually
hurt the artists /and/ their fans. Here's how:
The artists work very hard with their management to reduce costs so
that ticket prices are reasonable for their fans. For example, they may
travel in a bus instead of a plane, stay in cheaper motels, and/or sacrifice
some other convenience they are accustomed to, in order to offer reasonably
priced tickets in hopes that we will all turn out for the show. When a
company like Great Seats comes along and snatches up all the "great seats"
only to re-sell them at a 400% markup, who is the winner? Certainly not
the artist, all that extra cash goes into the pocket of a third party.
The artist, despite all his/her efforts to keep ticket prices within reach
of their true fans, looses out.
And what about us fans? Despite all our efforts to keep tabs on our
favorite musicians, when and where they are performing etc, and to be 'first
in line' to get tickets, we may find a company like Great Seats has beat
us to the punch. Meanwhile, as the artist's begin to see more and more
of their fans willing (forced) to pay the premium prices for good seats,
they may lose their incentive to ride around in that rickety old bus next
time, deciding instead to trade it in on a first class plane ticket. This
could raise ticket prices across the board, perhaps even pricing some true
fans out of the market.
I called Great Seats and asked if what they were doing wasn't just scalping
on a huge scale. They replied that their business was legal because they
claimed, and paid taxes on, all the profits they earned. I guess that's
all it takes to legitimize scalping? I can't say that I will never buy
tickets from Great Seats again, I might. In the future however, I'll do
my absolute best to get my tickets the old fashioned way first.
Your thoughts?
Terence

Well I don't know Terence, it sounds as if you are just beginning to
think this through. With all due respect, the arists mode of
transportation has nothing to do with the scalping of tickets. The issue
is simple really. The scalpers would be out of business if no one would
buy tickets from them.
I would urge you to do what I, and I'm sure many others do; refuse, as a
matter of concience, to buy tickets from scalpers, or unethical ticket
agents.

Exactly, Dave. This is a simple matter of supply and demand. If concert-
goers refuse to play inflated prices for tickets, by definition there is no
market. Unfortunately, it seems there are always those who are willing to
shell out the big bucks to these "entrepreneurs"...

Hi Fellow NanciNet Type Persons,
I was lucky enough to land 4 great seats to the show in Austin. I did it by
being one of the first to call all reserve them. Maybe even quicker than the
scalpers. I am one who will not pay more than face value for a ticket to a
concert or show simply because I believe that it is not ethical and I loathe
people who use the system to cheat the fans and the artist. They are leaches,
parasites the lowest form of businessmen. And that is just one mans opinion
