Subject: NN: New rave review for Nanci
   From: James_Troiano@umit.maine.edu (James Troiano)

Hi folks: I just picked the Winter 1999 issue of SIng Out and lo and
behold another great review of OV2. It was a little late-but, better
late than never. This premiere folk magazine extolled her version of
"Who Knows Where the Time Goes," as well as "Wings of a Dove." In
addition, her versions of "I Still Miss Someone," Desperadoes Waiting
for a Train" plus several others were praised. It was a completely
favorable review and as I wrote before what really matters is what each
one of us believe. It is nice, however, having so many positive reviews
from major magazines agree with those of us who loved our hero's
latest. Sincerely, Jim Troiano.

Subject: NN: Slipping-Down Life
   From: bobmcbob@ashley.email.net

I saw "A Slipping-Down Life" last night at the
South By Southwest Film Festival here in Austin.
The film rolled and guess who started singing?
Yup. It was Nanci G. doing "Hard Times Come
Again No More."

I talked to the director Toni Kalem today and it
seems she's a major NG fan. She said the song
was a natural because it's timeless and fits well
with the theme of the film, which is an
adaptation of Anne Tyler's novel of the same
name with Lili Taylor and Guy Pearce starring.

Kalem said she and Nanci talked during Sundance
and Nanci sent Kalem her novel and some short
stories to check out. Unfortunately she said she
hasn't had time to read them yet.

I gave Kalem the Nancinet address, so perhaps
she'll add more on her own.

best--bob (who's off to see another film)

   From: PHHCIO@aol.com

My wife and a had dinner at our club this past Friday night. The
entertainment was provided by the Yale University a capella group. A great
rendition of a number of old standards. Imagine our surprise when, right in
the middle of their show, they cranked out Outbound Plane. They actually did
a pretty good job on it. After the show we talked with a number of the group
members and none actually seemed to know who Nanci is. Their loss, so I
strongly recommended they partake of some of Nanci's CD joy. My personal
favorite has always been A Faire Summers Evening.

I agree with John's assessment of Shawn Mullin's "Soul's Core". I dont
listen to popular radio so hadn't heard of him until I happened to catch
a snippet of his on one of the awards shows. His sincerity struck me.
In the current heyday of glitzy commercial acts, he seems to be the
closest thing Ive seen to "folk" in awhile.

His use of the guitar is truly captivating, and his lyrics are as well.

Subject: NN: Inflection in my Television
   From: Peter A Kaczmarczyk (pkaczmar@indiana.edu>

After reading all the talk about Poet in My Television I decided
to drag out my copy and give it a play. The timing was perfect because my
wife, who can't stand Nanci, was asleep on the couch. I figured if she
woke up screaming I'd turn it off but otherwise it was a great chance to
subconciously influence her toward liking Nanci. I hummed along alot,
whispered to her that I loved her, and generally tried to send good vibes
her way to help create a pleasant association with Nanci.
Anyway, I noticed as the tape went on that many of the infections,
tonal changes and other twists on the vocals that Nanci uses and that have
raised such controversy on recent recordings, sound very appropriate and
fitting on the live performances. My expectations are different for the
two mediums, for I am definetly one who finds some of the inflections on
OVII and Blue Roses as not the best choice of how to perform the song. The
studio version should be a template, clean and refined, from which one can
base their live performances to which they give different twists to the
sounds, vocals or music. When a song is done live I expect, almost
welcome, changes that I might not like on a studio version, but that give
the performance a uniqueness.
This is of course a matter of taste, but I was definetly struck by
how the exact same drawls and inflections that I don't like on BRFTM I
though sounded great on live versions of Trouble in the Fields and
Outbound Plane, to name a few.

Terence, thank you for posting the info on the June 30 performance at Wolf
Trap. I sent out a call a couple of weeks ago for people interested in meeting
before or after the concert. I got one response. So far, there's two of us
who plan to meet there.
I am a firm believer in the concert experience from lawn seats (Lilith Fair in
assigned seats would have been only half the fun!!) ......... perhaps some of
us who plan on getting lawn seats could sit together? As for getting tickets
through "Great Seats" - I hope I won't have to resort to using them.

   From: Amp7932@aol.com

This is my first post to the Nancinet.com after two years of lurking.

Terence who gave GREAT information about Nanci appearing at the Wolf Trap was
wonderful. Thank you. I live in Central Kentucky and I am seriously
considering making the road trip to the Wolf Trap. I have been there one
other time for a concert and it was a wonderful experience.

Because I am a neophyte to the list I would respectfully like to ask for some
information. When people write to this site and talk about upcoming concerts
seldom do they give the state where the concert is being held. I know where
Austin is but Villa Montaval??? Where?

Also, how can I get a nancinet button. Last fall I was in Cincinnati for a
Nanci concert and saw the buttons. I would love to have one.

This past Saturday I was in the supermarket wearing my denim Blue Moon
Orchestra jacket and this guy came up to me and was blown away by the jacket.
We talked briefly and he is your classic fan. Big as saucers eyes, grabbing
Nanci songs out of the air. asking me if I knew when she would be in the
Kentucky area, etc. I gave him the web site for this Nancinet site and he was
delighted. It was nice to run into a Nanci fan like that. I wear my jacket
alot.

Nanci rocks and the University of Kentucky is going to repeat and win the NCAA
tournament!!

Back to lurking!

Hello,

This is also my first post to nancinet, and I second the question
about buttons. However, since I live perhaps three miles from Villa
Montalvo, I want both to say thanks for the information about her
being there (and to add that it beats the drive that I made to
Jacksonville Oregon to see her) and to tell those with inquiring minds
that it is in Saratoga California, a suburb of San Jose, and next to
Los Gatos, which is where the Brazilian Soccer team stayed when they
won the World Cup a few years ago. A very pretty (and expensive)
community. Villa Montalvo is a fairly small venue; so I expect the
tickets will be rather expensive, though Nanci at any price, etc., etc.

Best,

Lance (saving my money for the show) Beizer

That one threw me, too, and I'm familiar with the Bay Area. Recognizing 408

What a beautiful location. Saratoga is on the back road up to Big Basin, a

Well, as a UCLA alum, I am trying to forget about the NCAA, but here's to

Hope the URL's help...

Villa Montalvo is a beautiful site indeed - It's the former home to one of
California's early governors, however, they also handle the tickets for
"The Old Paul Masson Mountain Winery" further up the hills and it's beauty
and atmosphere far overshadow the Villa grounds. From the venu you can see
the entire S.F. Bay area - the night view is awsome.

After changing possession a few times in recent years (closed escrow again
last Friday), the "Mountain Winery" has grown from a 1300 seat amphitheater
to a 1750 seat venue. The backdrop to the stage is the front of the aging
cellar. If anyone's interested in looking at it, you can see photos from
last year's Kenny Loggins' shows on my daughter's pages
(http://www.arken.net/melissa ).

Why do I mention all this?? Well, it was at this Mountain Winery where
Nanci performed at the beginning of the Flyer Tour! So, I'm betting that
this is where she'll play this year. I should find out Friday or Saturday
when the ticket catalog arrives.

Hmm... isn't there a Nancinet wedding around that time,
not too far from there? Maybe we could get Nanci to sing

we have room for an orchestra at our little church (but
the Blue Moon Orchestra would fit just fine!).

Subject: NN: music filled weekend (no real Nanci content)
   From: "Thomas, Tasha" (TThomas@vilcom.com>

Saw some great music last weekend...

Friday night it was Maura O'Connell. She was wonderful, and her a cappella
version of "The Water is Wide" alone was worth the price of admission. She
also sang Nanci's "Trouble in the Fields".

Saw Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band on Sunday. If you like bluegrass at
all, then get yourself to this concert. These guys are having serious fun,
and it's contagious! Ah, the mandolins and Steve's harmonica...really, go if
you can.

I've had a couple people email about the Lucinda concert I mentioned in my
last post. Here's what I remember:

First, Patty Griffin opened up. She did several songs, most of which were
from her new album, Flaming Red. She did a couple songs that I think were
from a previous album (Poor Man's House and one about a boy who sat in front
of her in High School who later commits suicide). I'm not that familiar with
her work so don't hold me to all that though. She ended with "Crazy" by
Willie Nelson. She said she wasn't planning to end with that, but her guitar
string broke so she was going with an old standby.

Lucinda said that she wrote "Car Wheels" from a child's perspective, but
didn't realize the song was about her as a child until her father (the poet
Miller Williams) heard it for the first time and apologized to Lucinda. :-)

She dedicated a song (2 Kool 2 be 4-gotten, I think) to Dusty Springfield
and a member of her band who'd died of lung cancer just three weeks prior.

She said "Metal Firecracker" was a metaphor for a tour bus. A road song.

She told a story about a good friend of hers (I think she called him
Blaze-I'm sure lots of you will know who I'm talking about) who was a well
known songwriter. Apparently, years ago, Blaze was shot and killed in a bar
in Texas. She said she wrote "Drunken Angel" about him, but realized after
she finished that the song could also be about Townes.

She talked about having recently performed "The Way You Move" on one of the
morning talk shows (Good Morning America, I think). They had wanted her to
change up the lyrics and not sing the part about "lying on her back and
moaning at the ceiling". She told them she'd perform the song her way or not
at all. She said they gave in and everyone survived the singing of the true
lyrics.

Most of the songs she performed were from Car Wheels, but she also did
"Sweet Old World", "Passionate Kisses" and one I had heard before but don't
remember the name of (also about suicide).

Good show.

I'll second that and offer to copy the "Poet In My Television" tape and pass

Naturally, video copies don't come out very well after the second

   From: "John Kinnamon" (jkinn@one.net>

Nanci-netters, being a little more musically adventurous than the typical
man on the street, might enjoy a new CD released in Canada by an artist
known as Oh Susanna (aka Suzie Ungerleider). The CD is called "Johnstown"
and is released on Stella Records.

Oh Susanna borrows a little of the Appalachian folk feel of a Gillian Welch,
and
a little of the twang of an Iris Dement, and some of the storytelling themes
of a Fred Eaglesmith and creates an eerie, intense, unique sound that will
captivate fans of the aforementioned artists.

These are 12 original (one cowritten) songs of the dark side of life...
murder, whiskey, and love gone wrong. A refreshing new voice
with a unique vision and the chops to go with it.

There's a sample and ordering information on her website:

You've just gotta love a guy who walks out, smiles sheepishly and says,
"I'm gonna sing (pronounced "Saaang) ya'll some songs." And with song
titles like "800 Lb Jesus", "Burn the Trailer Park Down" and "I'll Try
Viagra Before It Falls", Paul Thorn won the crowd over on Saturday night
opening for Maura O'Connell at the Great Aunt Stella Center in Charlotte,
NC.

Thorn hails from Tupelo and is the son of a Church of God minister. He
told wonderful introductory stories before each song. He has an
irreverent sense of humor and a Prinesque way with words. I've been
hearing one of his songs played on WNCW lately. Catch him if you've a

Maura was wonderful, full of energy and wit and in great voice. ENough

The LBJ badge that Nanci wears can be found quite regularly on eBay.com and
if you all don't fight over them and not bid against one another they can be
had cheaply for $5 or less when you're lucky. I bought a few several months
back and offered them to other Nancinetters. They are usually easiest to
find by just searching "LBJ" and are considered a "Flasher pin or button".
Look at the pictures on ebay because there are some variations. I have one
