Subject: NN: Books
From: John Edward Graveling (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
Has reading a book ever influenced you into going out and buying a
record/cd? Or, has reading a book changed your perception of a record,
for better or worse?
I've just finished reading Vince Bell's "One Man's Music", and if you
want to read about a human being's desire to overcome some terrible
injuries and come out the other end, then this is essential reading. It
certainly isn't pretty and the struggle he went through to come out of a
coma, rebuild both his physical, and mental self is quite inspiring. I
bought "Phoenix", his last cd, back when it was released in '94, and it's
always been a good listen, and I've raved here about his new cd, "Texas
Plates". There were songs on both I liked a lot, but didn't have a clue
what they were really about, or where they had come from. Now all is
clear, because of reading the book, it has enhanced my listening of both
cd's immeasurably.
I'm working my way through Nanci's "Other Voices" and the effect is the
same. Reading her perspective of what she recorded on both "Other Voices"
projects, and then reading the opinions of some of the other musicians
involved, sheds a different light on the music. I can still make my own
mind up, but the light that is thrown on why things turn out the way they
do is something which enhances my appreciation of the music and gives me
a greater understanding of what I am listening to.

Hi NN's,
There are at least four of those campaign buttons Robert was asking about on
eBay. From eBay's main page search for "LBJ flasher". Minimum bid is $6
and refrain from bidding against any other Nancinetters. The guy selling
them must have a large cache of these because he keeps selling them month
after month. You should be able to pick one up reasonably if your patient.

I recently bid and won on the LBJ button like Nanci's on eBay. It was
in mint condition and I've seen others offered on that site. It only
cost me 6.99 including shipping. . .

Not quite in Big Sur yet, although the buttons are already there
thanks to the US Postal Service. It will be a few weeks before I can
deliver. I have shipped about 40 cartons of books, papers, CDs
already. 30 cents a pound is quite enticing.
March 29 is the big day. Movers come first and in the afternoon Anne
and I drive down to Linden NJ and pick up a 24 foot RV. That evening
we shove off and sleep in Strousburg, PA. Six days later, weather
willing, we return the RV in Dublin and pick up car #1 (which ships on
March 19) at a friends place of business.
Bill, you can update the button FAQ information. The mail address is

P.O. Box 396
Big Sur, Ca 93920
We had to wait 18 months for the PO Box...
The email address, just opened today, is jalvo@mbay.net
MBAY means Monterey Bay, a nice local service which I prefer.

let me know. It might be lost in the move confusion.

Subject: NN: Another new album and Thanks
From: "Robert Pugsley" (RMP6@leicester.ac.uk>
Dear all,
First of all I want to publically thank well known NNer
for sending me a whole load of stuff including the live
recording he mentioned the other day of Nanci @ Cambridge
in 1985. This was the first time I saw her and the memories
just came flooding back. I can't believe it was nearly 14 years
ago. The Cambridge Folk Festival is a small-ish festival
(in comparison to Glastonbury et al) but very popular and
whenever I've been there it's had a great atmosphere. Nanci
has played a few times as has Lyle Lovett, Richard Thompson,
Kate Campbell, and just about everybody ever mentioned here.
It also serves lovely beer. Anyway the recording made me want
to go again this year...so thanks Hans...
Secondly, a new album from Beth Orton has just bee released
over here, and I think a few of you good people would enjoy it.
It's kind of folk/jazz/little bit alt.country/little bit unclassifiable.
Quite laid back, beautifully produced, great singing, it reminded
me (in 'feel' not in the way it sounds) to Last of the True Believers
and Lone Star State of Mind.
Did I mention that the Wilco album is great?
Thanks to all who gave me tips on getting an LBJ badge I'm looking
into it now.
All the best
Robert (Pugsley)

Are you sure that it is Cambridge in England? On my tape is only the
indication Cambridge 1985 but not if it is US or UK. Info is wanted for the
record.

Subject: NN: Darn my memory...
From: "Robert Pugsley" (RMP6@leicester.ac.uk>
Dear all,
Hans has pointed out to me that the CD I have been listening to
might not have been recorded at Cambridge, England, but rather
Cambridge, USA (Mass. perhaps?)...and this would probably be
right as I have now checked with my significant other and she
thinks we didn't see Nanci at Cambridge (England) until the
later part of the 80s. I don't know when Nanci first visited these
aprts but I guess 1985 might be a bit early.
This is a pity as I have particular fond memories of Nanci at
the Cambridge Folk Festival so if anyone has got a tape of that
particular gig I would love to have it...(1988 or thereabouts)

I do not want to put a damper on this but I do not think that Nanci
appeared at Cambridge in 85. AS far as I am aware her first UK
appearance was in 87 at the Peterborough Country Music Festival. I lived
ther at the time but was in Australia so missed her!.
I think she has only appeared at Cambridge twice, in 89 with James
Hooker only and with the band in 92 with the exception of Fran Breen.
Apologies if I am wrong. BTW was at both of these and 92 in particular
was absolutely brilliant!

to Jacksonville Florida.

Subject: NN: The Old Paul Masson Winery
From: Greg Johnson (gregor@computerpro.com>
Hi all!
I was at the Kenny Loggins Concert at the "Old Winery" last August and I
can tell you that it would be a perfect place to see Nanci (or anyone). We
were visiting my brother who lives south of San Jose near San Martin (where
they can have animals around the place).
So, now I have to get airline tickets to California again to see Nanci at
Villa Montalvo!! See y'all there!
